Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 208, Issue 2

2021-08-05 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I replaced my encoders in 2014 and then last Saturday I replaced the
encoders in a friend's K3 SN 2707 I think.

In 2014 I used a solder sucker to desolder.  I now have a Hakko FR-300
desoldering tool and used that last Saturday.  The five small pins are
easy.  It's the two large tabs that are a bit difficult. On the bottom
two encoders I snipped those tabs and then heated and pulled the cut off
piece.  On the upper two encoders I desoldered the small pins and then
rocked the encoder back and forth alternating heating the tabs.

As far as spacing the encoders I 3D printed some 1.4 mm thick x 8 mm OD
spacers.  That worked well.  If I did it again I'd make the spacers 9 or
10 mm OD.

In a post in May to Elecraft K3 groups.io Keith, WE6R, Elecraft K3 Tech
posted "Our part # E640018, washer spacer E700187 or E700035 to space
them above the board evenly."  I found a reference to E700035 in a
manual.  It's a #4 x 3/8" nylon washer.  I couldn't find any reference
to thickness of the washer.

I'm in the process of replacing the four encoders to the left of the main
VFO knob and wonder if anyone has any advice or pep talks to offer.

The encoders in my summer 2008 vintage K3 degraded to the point where they
often count backwards, making adjustment of CW speed or power out difficult.

I've purchased four replacements from Elecraft and have been working up my
courage and taking deep breaths. Getting to the board is a fairly
complicated first phase. I had an Elecraft document on installation of an
audio LPF on the DSP board and found it to be very useful in this process.
Of course the original assembly manual is also useful.

Now I've got the K3 apart to the point of allowing access. The upper two
encoders have terminals located beneath an LED mounting board and are
almost impossible to access from the top. I may stop after replacing the
lower two, assuming I'm successful with them.

My usual method involves solder wick plus flux. Sometimes I find ChipQuik
to be very helpful in allowing me to remove a part without getting rid of
all the solder. In this case though, using ChipQuik would require heating
seven joints simultaneously which I haven't been able to do.

There's also an issue with mounting the encoder at the correct height so
the shaft switch can be operated. So I'll try to match the height of the
new shaft end to that of the existing encoders.

I found one website which is somewhat helpful discussing this task:

https://www.n5na.net/s9y/index.php?/archives/26-Replacing-Elecraft-K3-Push-Button-Encoders.html

I'm keeping a lot of notes. Anyone planning to attempt this job is welcome
to them.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Required Update????

2019-01-05 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA

Where was the email about the important/required KPA1500 update posted?

The first I heard about it was Rich's KUDOS reflector post.  I've gone
back through my reflector digests and emails and haven't found any
announcement about the update.

BTW, I just updated to version 2 with no problems.

Well, I saw the email Thursday night about the Important firmware update for the
kpa1500 v2.0
So I applied it after updating the utility program first when I got home from
work on Friday.

Going well, till it failed and then hung.
Yes - I freaked out, I know what bad things happen when firmware updates go
bad (aka iPhone)

[Elecraft] Missing Step for K-POD Front Panel Mod

2016-07-02 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I received my K-POD this afternoon and proceeded to do the front panel
mod. The instructions say to simply remove the 3 top and 2 bottom front
panel screws and pry off the front panel. In the past I recalled
needing to remove the left side panel but couldn't really remember why.
When I was unable to pry the left side of the front panel loose I
removed the left panel and remembered why I had to do that in the past.
There is a round head screw on the bottom front 2D fastener that must be
removed for the board to slide out. After I removed that screw it was
no problem. The instructions need to include this step.

My K3 is SN 3329. Perhaps later K3s don't have that round head screw.

I found my PAE-Kx33 also put out hash I could hear when operating near

The PAE power supply works fine, but it still puts out enough hash that I
can't use my loop antenna near it. It is better than others? Probably, but
still not usable for me when near the receiving antenna.

[Elecraft] K3 - No RX/TX

2015-12-14 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I had a similar problem a month or two ago. I had upgraded my

even running mobile for several QSO parties, before I had the problem.

So, check those TMP connectors on your synthesizer board.

I was moving my hand from the keyboard to the radio and brushed my

too low to get to the band switches. I managed to scratch the U out of the

Can I expect the rest of the yellow functions to just rub off the face of

So far this is my only disappointment in an otherwise excellent radio...

possible to clean them, as they are sealed.

In contrast, the VFO A and B encoders are optical, not mechanical, and they are
specified at 10 million rotations. But the cost difference between optical and
mechanical is huge (about 40:1). The mechanical encoders are very small,
fitting in the available space, and are a pragmatic choice for the function

Hi all
Switched on my KX3 this morning, the LEDs. lit up and stayed on but nothing
else. Had to removed the batteries to clear the LEDs. Tried the external PSU
with and without the batteries installed with same result. Anyone any ideas?

[Elecraft] KX3 power on

2013-10-13 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA

Rod,

I saw your later post that you'd solved your problem. I've had a
similar problem but it's occurred when I've removed the serial cable
from the rig. Same symptoms as you report.

I've solved it by opening the KX3 and removing one battery for a few
seconds then reinstalling. After I do that my KX3 will power up normally.

Have just switched on my KX3 after non use of 1 month, will not work on
batteries as they have discharged. Also when I use external power source
(13.5Volts) the following lights flash, TX. Delta f, OFS and B. There is no
Display.

Has anyone had this problem and has a solution?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 encoder backlash?

2012-07-08 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I have SN 3329 and think I have the same thing. I'd call it more play
than backlash. I think there was a short period where Elecraft used
some different encoders than they'd been using and ours have these encoders.

I built a K3 about 5 months earlier for our club. Those encoders have
light detents with no play/backlash.

I've considered contacting Elecraft about replacing my encoders but
never have.

 I have a factory-built K3 #3215 and have always noticed a significant
amount of backlash on the four encoders located just left of the VFO A knob.
Has this been improved on newer K3's? Is there a replacement option or a
newer front panel available to improve this?
 Any info would be appreciated.
 Thanks.

My K3 is serial #5102 purchased in January 2011. My VFO B knob has just
cracked: it's spontaneously developed ugly linear fissures across the face
of the knob. The cracks begin nowhere near the screw hole. There are two
cracks. The rig has spent its life in an internal room with no UV exposure.

I emailed Elecraft and the response was perfect, as usual: a replacement
knob was in the mail less than a day after I'd made email contact with the
 parts department.

This is the first/only report of a cracked VFO knob.

Such things happen - that's the nature of matter and entropy. What's
important to me is the great response from Elecraft. That's why I buy from
 them.

 Thanks Richard Co.

Re: [Elecraft] Sudden K3 AGC pop-off after adding P3

2011-10-08 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
This is a problem not only for HRD but any software in which the AGC
status is polled continuously. I frequently use CQ/X by NO5W and had
the same problem. Chuck turned off the AGC polling in CQ/X and the
problem no longer occurs. Of course, now the AGC status can't be shown

 Dan,

This is a known issue with HRD used with the K3. It happens with me a
few times a week with my K3+P3. Reducing the polling rate of the K3 in
HRD may reduce the frequency of this issue, but it won't eliminate it.
The choice seems to be either put up it, or stop using HRD. Simon Brown
has handed over the reins of HRD development, so perhaps the new team
can devote some time to investigating and fixing this.

Re: [Elecraft] Sudden K3 AGC pop-off after adding P3

2011-10-08 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I'm not a programmer nor do I play one on TV. I'm just an observer.

Why should polling the AGC randomly turn it off on the K3? None of the
other parameters that are polled at the same frequency are adversely
affected, only the AGC.

AGC should be able to be polled without it turning off.

The real deal would be why the over-polling is necessary in the first

 configured hardware.

If it's not cheep code, then it's certainly not state of the art, nor
at all close. One always should have a constants library which
carries the array of values necessary to drive any hardware timing
 sensitive code.

Where I worked at my last TWO places of employment, going back to an
ATT school in 1976 (!), embedding target-variable constants in
program code and using code switches would get your code summarily
rejected by a reviewer or auditor, subject one to an auditor approved
redesign and recode (with prior effort flushed down the turlet), and
have an effect on one's pay grade. There was a brutal standards are
just that attitude. Putting in the table driven code costs some in
the beginning, but saves huge in maintenance, and a maze of switches
eventually means recoding in its entirety.

That's probably what we're really fighting with the HRD code.
Otherwise it's a simple table change that gets done in seconds, and
 then recompiled.

[Elecraft] K3 - KRX3 Aux Ant Indicator

2010-10-01 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I just installed my KRX3 a few days ago and am still figuring out how
it all works.

I don't understand how to see which antenna the sub receiver is using
without having to select BSET or press and hold the RX ANT to select
MAIN or AUX.

The manual says When MAIN is in effect, the 1-2 and RX icons show which
antenna the sub is sharing with the main receiver. When AUX is in
effect, these icons will all be off (if CONFIG:KRX3 is set for
ANT=BNC) However, this is only true if BSET is activated. When BSET
is not activated I don't see any indication of the sub's antenna selection.

What am I missing? Any help is appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 static electricity

2009-12-01 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I had this problem occur with my Omni VI back in the 90's. When I would
walk in the room and touch the VFO the rig would shut down. A friend
across town had the same problem with his Omni VI. It took us a while
to figure out it was static electricity.

Ten-Tec's fix was to send out a short piece of braid with a solder lug
on each end. One end went around the encoder shaft, the other end was
attached to the rig chasis. That solved the problem.

Someone said Static electricity is YOUR problem, not the K3's. I have
to disagree. The K3 shouldn't be susceptible to static electricity.

adapted to the K3 -- as long as it does not otherwise affect the spin of the
 VFO knob.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram Software

2009-08-07 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I believe it's been discontinued. I downloaded the latest version
before they closed the website. You can download it at
www.n5na.net/download/gram16_setup.exe .

Re: [Elecraft] WriteLog Cabrillo File

For FD all you need is a dupe sheet. Cabrillo is not needed.

Re: [Elecraft] 2-56 pan heads

2009-06-24 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
Ditto here. I built a K3 for my club a couple of months ago and had the
same problem. I found some screws in my can o' screws that were the
right size and used them. Then I found the screws I should have used.

Definitely needs a comment in the manual.

If I recall correctly the missing 2-56 pan head screws
(used in the front panel board assembly - pg 24) are packed
with 2-56 screws that are used for the VFO A trim panel

Unfortunately, if the user sets aside the separate envelope
with trim panel hardware until it is time to install the
trip panel (to prevent loss of the 2-56 hardware), he will
not find the missing 2-56 hardware when needed to attach
the spacers to the front panel circuit board.

I had that problem with my K3 and this is the fourth
or fifth report of the same problem here. The assembly
manual needs an explicit statement on page 24 indicating
 where to find those screws.

 Hello RC:

See the assembly manual parts list, bottom of page A-12 in Rev H:

Note: The black pan head 2-56 screws are supplied in
separate envelopes. Do not mix them up. You will be
instructed when to use each size screw in the assembly
procedure. Using the wrong screw may destroy your front panel
 circuit board.

If that envelope isn't anywhere in the kit, contact
k3supp...@elecraft.com It's very rare that parts are life out
of the kits, so look carefully.

As the manual recommends, doing the inventory will help you
recognize everything and avoid long, frustrating searches for
parts during assembly. Should something be really missing, it
gives time for Elecraft to dispatch it to you, often before
you run into a brick wall during assembly.

The washers called for there is to ensure the front panel
board is not warped when it's mounted on the sheet metal. If
you leave washers out, the center area of the board will be
pulled closer than it should be to the metal.

One place where this could cause serious trouble is if the
screws for mounting the plastic bezel over the LCD opening
reach through enough to touch the glass front on the LCD. In
early kits, several builders managed to break the glass and
destroy the LCD by accidentally installing the wrong length
screws into the bezel. Having the FB board out of position
because the washers are missing might do the same.

That's one reason why the screws are supplied in separate
envelopes with the instruction to avoid mixing them up.

During the assembly of K3 #3212 Front panel on page #29
 requires 2ea 2-56 black 1/4 6.4mm pan head screws and #2
split lock washers to mount the stand-offs under the LCD.
These screws were missing from the Hardware bag. There were
2ea 4-40 black flat head screws in the bag. I found 2ea 2-56
black pan head screws in my Junk Box, however they were
shorter than 5.6mm. In order to install the stand-offs the #2
split lock washer had to be left off. Is this action going to
cause an issue later? RC kc5wa
