Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 208, Issue 2
I replaced my encoders in 2014 and then last Saturday I replaced the encoders in a friend's K3 SN 2707 I think. In 2014 I used a solder sucker to desolder. I now have a Hakko FR-300 desoldering tool and used that last Saturday. The five small pins are easy. It's the two large tabs that are a bit difficult. On the bottom two encoders I snipped those tabs and then heated and pulled the cut off piece. On the upper two encoders I desoldered the small pins and then rocked the encoder back and forth alternating heating the tabs. As far as spacing the encoders I 3D printed some 1.4 mm thick x 8 mm OD spacers. That worked well. If I did it again I'd make the spacers 9 or 10 mm OD. In a post in May to Elecraft K3 groups.io Keith, WE6R, Elecraft K3 Tech posted "Our part # E640018, washer spacer E700187 or E700035 to space them above the board evenly." I found a reference to E700035 in a manual. It's a #4 x 3/8" nylon washer. I couldn't find any reference to thickness of the washer. 73, Alan N5NA On 2021-08-05 3:25 PM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Message: 3 Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2021 11:59:03 -0500 From: Nick Kennedy To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 small rotary encoder replacement Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" I'm in the process of replacing the four encoders to the left of the main VFO knob and wonder if anyone has any advice or pep talks to offer. The encoders in my summer 2008 vintage K3 degraded to the point where they often count backwards, making adjustment of CW speed or power out difficult. I've purchased four replacements from Elecraft and have been working up my courage and taking deep breaths. Getting to the board is a fairly complicated first phase. I had an Elecraft document on installation of an audio LPF on the DSP board and found it to be very useful in this process. Of course the original assembly manual is also useful. Now I've got the K3 apart to the point of allowing access. The upper two encoders have terminals located beneath an LED mounting board and are almost impossible to access from the top. I may stop after replacing the lower two, assuming I'm successful with them. My usual method involves solder wick plus flux. Sometimes I find ChipQuik to be very helpful in allowing me to remove a part without getting rid of all the solder. In this case though, using ChipQuik would require heating seven joints simultaneously which I haven't been able to do. There's also an issue with mounting the encoder at the correct height so the shaft switch can be operated. So I'll try to match the height of the new shaft end to that of the existing encoders. I found one website which is somewhat helpful discussing this task: https://www.n5na.net/s9y/index.php?/archives/26-Replacing-Elecraft-K3-Push-Button-Encoders.html I'm keeping a lot of notes. Anyone planning to attempt this job is welcome to them. 73 Nick, WA5BDU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Missing Step for K-POD Front Panel Mod
I received my K-POD this afternoon and proceeded to do the front panel mod. The instructions say to simply remove the 3 top and 2 bottom front panel screws and pry off the front panel. In the past I recalled needing to remove the left side panel but couldn't really remember why. When I was unable to pry the left side of the front panel loose I removed the left panel and remembered why I had to do that in the past. There is a round head screw on the bottom front 2D fastener that must be removed for the board to slide out. After I removed that screw it was no problem. The instructions need to include this step. My K3 is SN 3329. I had a similar problem a month or two ago. I had upgraded my synthesizer back in February. It turns out I had not fully seated all of the TMP connectors on the new KSYN3A. You were right Guy. My rig ran fine all day yesterday and then last night I had the same problem. Opened it up and used some needle-nose pliers on the TMP connectors to twist and push. I was able to insert a couple a little further and found one was only about half inserted. Maybe I have it this time! 73, Alan N5NA On 10/19/2015 3:05 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: The outer shell of the TMP plug can be connected without being fully inserted into the TMP connector. My VFO B knob has just cracked: it's spontaneously developed ugly linear fissures across the face of the knob. The cracks begin nowhere near the screw hole. There are two cracks. The rig has spent its life in an internal room with no UV exposure. I emailed Elecraft and the response was perfect, as usual: a replacement knob was in the mail less than a day after I'd made email contact with the parts department. This is the first/only report of a cracked VFO knob. Such things happen - that's the nature of matter and entropy. What's important to me is the great response from Elecraft. This is a problem not only for HRD but any software in which the AGC status is polled continuously. I frequently use CQ/X by NO5W and had the same problem. It happens with me a few times a week with my K3+P3. Reducing the polling rate of the K3 in HRD may reduce the frequency of this issue, but it won't eliminate it. The choice seems to be either put up it, or stop using HRD. Simon Brown has handed over the reins of HRD development, so perhaps the new team can devote some time to investigating and fixing this. vy 73 de David M0DHO -- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Sudden K3 AGC pop-off after adding P3
I'm not a programmer nor do I play one on TV. I'm just an observer. Why should polling the AGC randomly turn it off on the K3? None of the other parameters that are polled at the same frequency are adversely affected, only the AGC. AGC should be able to be polled without it turning off. Alan On 10/8/2011 12:29 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: The real deal would be why the over-polling is necessary in the first place. I'd guess it's done to service ALL the different rig types (not just Elecraft and K3) with a single strip of code, instead of pushing those constants at program startup based on the target or configured hardware. If it's not cheep code, then it's certainly not state of the art, nor at all close. One always should have a constants library which carries the array of values necessary to drive any hardware timing sensitive code. Where I worked at my last TWO places of employment, going back to an ATT school in 1976 (!), embedding target-variable constants in program code and using code switches would get your code summarily rejected by a reviewer or auditor, subject one to an auditor approved redesign and recode (with prior effort flushed down the turlet), and have an effect on one's pay grade. There was a brutal standards are just that attitude. Putting in the table driven code costs some in the beginning, but saves huge in maintenance, and a maze of switches eventually means recoding in its entirety. That's probably what we're really fighting with the HRD code. Otherwise it's a simple table change that gets done in seconds, and then recompiled. 73, Guy. When AUX is in effect, these icons will all be off (if CONFIG:KRX3 is set for ANT=BNC) However, this is only true if BSET is activated. Re: [Elecraft] K3 static electricity
I had this problem occur with my Omni VI back in the 90's. When I would walk in the room and touch the VFO the rig would shut down. A friend across town had the same problem with his Omni VI. It took us a while to figure out it was static electricity. Ten-Tec's fix was to send out a short piece of braid with a solder lug on each end. One end went around the encoder shaft, the other end was attached to the rig chasis. That solved the problem. Someone said Static electricity is YOUR problem, not the K3's. I have to disagree. The K3 shouldn't be susceptible to static electricity. 73, Alan N5NA Paul Christensen wrote: Steve, I recall a VFO static problem with one of the Ten Tec models. As the manual recommends, doing the inventory will help you recognize everything and avoid long, frustrating searches for parts during assembly. Should something be really missing, it gives time for Elecraft to dispatch it to you, often before you run into a brick wall during assembly. The washers called for there is to ensure the front panel board is not warped when it's mounted on the sheet metal. If you leave washers out, the center area of the board will be pulled closer than it should be to the metal. One place where this could cause serious trouble is if the screws for mounting the plastic bezel over the LCD opening reach through enough to touch the glass front on the LCD. In early kits, several builders managed to break the glass and destroy the LCD by accidentally installing the wrong length screws into the bezel. Having the FB board out of position because the washers are missing might do the same.
