Re: [Elecraft] Cw Skimmer

2015-10-09 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
I have FiFi SDR RX ( http://www.box73.com/product/3 ) connected to K3 IF
output with CW skimmer.
Very nice especially in pileups when trying to find where DX is listening.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 front panel encoders

2014-12-30 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
I replaced all four encoders ( with help from my friend ) couple of days ago.
It was quite a job as the whole front panel has to be taken into pieces and
DSP boards has to be taken off.
A good SMD rework station is recommended to clean through holes + experience in
rework not to damage foils in PCB. New encoders are bit thicker so height
difference has to be taken into account while assembling .

New encoders work smooth and great.

One notice, be careful when taking off the knobs as at least RIT encoder is
not having nothing else than small soft metal clips holding it together (
Encoders metal nut has been left out as there is no room or thin enough nut was
not available at the time mine was built )

[Elecraft] K3 front panel encoders

2014-11-11 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
Has anyone figured out how to clean or fix front panel encoders (SHIFT/LO ,
HI /WIDTH) ? These cheap ( ~ 0.5$ encoders ) in my K3 has always been
quite " jumpy " i.e. value jumps up and down in random steps . Also the"
feeling " is not what you would expect form rig in this price range.

Similar issue was in FT-1000MP RIT encoder in 90s . Dust got inside the
optical encoder and turning RIT knob jumped frequency steps quite randomly.

Re: [Elecraft] SDR_Sound_Cards

2012-09-13 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
I have pretty much given up my LP-PAN +CW skimmer and NAP3 ever since I
upgraded my PC OS from XP to WIN7 ( 64bit ) with AMD X4 Phenom.

Tried now two different soundcards Infrasonic Quartet ( did work OK in XP )
and now recently bought EMU 0204 and same " nightmare " continues. Have
taken memory physically out from PC and limited use of memory in down to 3G,
did run things with " admin " rights and XP SP3 compatibilty but nothing
seems to to work.

stick with XP 32bit if you want to use these.. :(

Re: [Elecraft] K-3 with High Current Problem on 20 meters

2011-06-02 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
I had the same problem on 10m.

My power supply ( 30A max ) had a voltage drop from 13.8V to 12.5V on 100W
output. I was instructed by Elecraft to " increase the power supply voltage
to 14.0 to 14.5VDC under no load, and make sure the is as direct of
connection as possible between the power supply " Then my power supply
voltage was dropping from 14.5V to 13.8V ( looking from K3 DC voltage meter
)

This cured my problem at least in home use.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 keying the KPA-500 & transverter

2011-04-11 Thread Olli
Hi Toby,

if my memory serves me right (digged into the schematics about 7-8 month' ago
when I had a problem with one of the key-out jacks) this will never work as
both
key-out pins share the same circuitry. It's just different "final" switching
transistors (and thus different loads possible) that distinguish both.

A solution around this could be the band specific PTT solution of WW2R/G4FRE
(http://g4fre.com/K3_PTT_sw.htm) or something similar. The key is to use
DIGOUT0
or DIGOUT1 to control external switching. It can be configured per band.

Re: [Elecraft] K3V - another new product speculation

2011-04-10 Thread Olli
> That is an extremely small market. There is a reason the rigs you
> mentioned are no longer around. Serious ops go the transverter route.

The problem is that there are NO good VHF/UHF radios anymore! That's why the
serious OPs MUST go the transverter route. Believe me, there's quite some
market
in Europe for really good VHF&up equipment. We have a high population density
here with lots of active stations. Especially during contests were the big guns
do > 1.000 QSOs alone on 2 m in a 24 h contest. Ever wondered why companies
like
DB6NT technologies can sell monoband 20 W transverters for 1.400 EUR? Because
there is demand for extra-ordinary performance.

To my mind a "K3V" incl. 10, 6, 2 m with 100 W, crossband capability
(satellites) and with optional internal 70 & 23 cm and 4 m modules would be a
really good seller as long as it could be produced for a price as the stock K3
+
100 W amp ranges today. But surely the market is smaller than that for a K3 as
is today. External transverters are rather a pain, again some extra boxes,
cabling needed, a.s.o., not really portable/mobile friendly. Put it all into
one
package and it will be a real plus.

Unfortunately this will never happen, I fear. :-((

[Elecraft] Voice keyer built into microphone

2011-04-10 Thread Olli
Hi guys,

I developed a voice keyer solution that might be of interest to some of you. It
is completely integrated into an MH-31 hand microphone so no additional weight
and no additional space needed. Originally thought for Yaesu transceivers, then
redesigned to fit Kenwood and Icom, too, it also works flawlessly with my
Elecraft K3. So it might be a nice solution for all who do not have the K3
internal voice keyer module but do not want to forego a CQ parrot. ;-))

Check it out at http://www.dh8bqa.de/ssp-mh31/ssp-mh31.html

A professionally produced kit is available from the German FUNKAMATEUR magazine.

I will be glad to answer questions if needed.

Only if those "any" radios provide a break in the RX path like the K3 does!
There are not many. Otherwise you'll need two bypass relays to take it out of
line when transmitting if you want to put it up front the radio's antenna input.

Re: [Elecraft] My K3 forgets where it's at on DC failure

2011-02-28 Thread Olli
C'mon guys, I cannot here that "it's like a computer" argument anymore! ALL
modern transceivers nowadays are controlled by microprocessors and ALL get it
right to be on the same QRG after a power failure ... except our beloved K3!

The last used frequency is stored into the EEPROM of the PIC (or probably
external memory, haven't checked the schematics on that) when changing bands so
why not already save it after no move of the VFO knob of say 5 seconds?

The only valid reason not to do so that I could see (it can't be programming as
the function is already there) but still struggle a bit accepting (as others do
get it right) is the "fear" of memory failures within the rig's "lifetime" as
you usually can only write into EEPROM (at least that in today's PIC
processors)
for about 1.000.000 times and that's not much depending on usuage scenarios and
storing the frequency e.g. all 5 seconds.

Is that the real reason why not implementing that easy functionality, Wayne?

I use AGC THR=8, SLP=002 + AGC DCY SOFT. This sound OK with my modest

Another issue is if you get someone loud to your zero beat ( or within your

Re: [Elecraft] OT: K440XV?

2010-11-13 Thread Olli
James,

if your only interest is 440 FM then a handheld or mobile TRX should be a much
cheaper solution. ;-))

Having fitted the K144XV in my K3 I would not see any available space anymore
to
also fit a 70 and/or 23 cm transverter inside, too. With all the options space
is getting rare inside. ;-))

And I don't think that lots of people would fit a "K440XV" instead of a K144XV
inside meaning you have 160 - 6 m coverage plus 440 in one box but skipping 144
MHz. Sure this is no good business model, at least to my mind. ;-))

But maybe you would like to use Elecraft's external transverters which
integrate
nicely, i.e. besides the external box you completely control everything from
the
K3 itself including frequency display. Can it get any better? ;-))

Aihe: [Elecraft] New K3 Beta Release: APF for CW, "Fast Monitor" & improved
TX gate for voice modes

K3 beta-test firmware revision 4.18 (with DSP rev. 2.67) is now
available. This release includes our new APF (audio peaking filter)
for CW mode, which has been helping K3 field testers work "extreme"
weak DX for the past several days.

For voice modes, there's a "Fast Monitor" option (TX voice monitor
without the processing delay). Also included is a much-improved TX
Noise Gate.

This release fixes a problem with low initial output in SSB Tx.

See detailed release notes below.

Please send any questions tok3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

   http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

Lyle
KK7P

* * *

MCU 4.18 / DSP 2.67 / FPF 1.14, 11-5-2010

NOTE: Be sure to install all firmware files for this release,
including FPF 1.14. Otherwise your menu text will be incorrect.

* APF (AUDIO PEAKING FILTER) ADDED: APF provides enhanced
copy of weak signals in CW mode, and is especially useful when
signals are at the noise level. The K3’s APF is patterned after
the most successful analog APF implementations, and is equally
effective in user tests. To use APF, make sure CONFIG:DUAL PB
is set to APF. (This is the default. “NOR” restores the original DUAL PB
function.) Then hold DUAL PB to turn APF on/off. A special DSP
graphic display is used to show that APF is in effect. At the time
APF is activated, the regular I.F. SHIFT setting, if any, is “frozen,”
and SHIFT then controls the center pitch of the APF filter in 10-Hz
steps. APF is independent for the main and sub receivers, as well
as for presets I and II. Switching between these two presets is a
convenient way of turning APF on/off quickly.

* ADDED VOICE TX “FAST MONITOR”: Normally the voice
monitor includes a ~20-ms delay, which is necessary to hear how your
on-air signal will sound (with compression, etc.). If you prefer to not
hear any delay in the voice monitor, set CONFIG:TX MON to FAST.
Note: You’ll still hear the delayed and processed monitor if you
adjust the MIC, CMP, TX EQ or TX GATE settings while transmitting.

* TX NOISE GATE IMPROVEMENT: The Noise Gate/Downward
Expander for voice modes has smoother response and much
improved performance near the threshold.

* NARROW AF FILTER IMPROVEMENT: Adjusting SHIFT when using very
narrow DSP filters no longer causes ‘pop’ artifacts.

I updated my K3 to MCU 4.17 beta last night along with DSP 2.65 and FPU
1.4(?) and now today I notice that my SSB output is down about 3 dB. I
can only coax about 50 Watts peak out of it and I've made no changes to
microphone, TX EQ, Mic Gain, Compression, or output power (set to 100 W).
CONFIG:TXG VCE is set to 1.0 dB as before.

On CW I get a full 100 Watts peak.

Anyone else seeing this?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key-out jack - configuration needed?

2010-10-10 Thread Olli
Hi James,

you don't need to connect an outside pull-up (only if you want to measure
voltages, so you are basically right as well, depending on what/how you want to
measure ;-)). The transistor is used as a simple electronic switch here thus
when getting bias on it's gate it will switch source (connected to ground)
through to the gate (also groundlevel then, that's why you can simply measure
for 0 ohm resistance between drain and chassis when keyed). If no bias then
infinite ohms at drain.

Anyway, thanks for your assistance and advices! This is what I love about
Elecraft and their email reflector. ;-))

Oliver, it is a MOSFET, IRF630 and you may be right, but I would not
expect to see any change until I provided a voltage source to the Key
Out line. So, if it was me I would do the "pull up" resistor test I
described earlier just to be on the safe side. It appears from the
schematic that it is switched by the 7R line. K3 schematics, RF Board
sheet 1 of 4. There is no drain voltage applied to the IRF630 so that
will have to be supplied externally.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key-out jack - configuration needed?

2010-10-10 Thread Olli
Hi Don,

many thanks for your advice. Just opened up the K3, located Q3 and Q5 and
measured there directly. Everything as it should be, 13 V bias to the gates
during TX, Drain switching to ground, everything as expected. Uh? Same
measurements at the RCA jack from the PCB and everything fine. Measured again
from the outside and ... everything fine?! Connecting the cable, PA is
switching. Closing the cover and putting on the screws and still everything
fine?! I have no clue why it's working perfectly now and didn't before ...
*scratching head*

Oh well, maybe my K3 simply wanted somebody to look into it's beautiful inards
again. ;-))

Andyway, thanks again for your help. Must be magic emails in this case. ;-))

[Elecraft] K3 key-out jack - configuration needed?

2010-10-10 Thread Olli
Hi guys,

preparing for the autumn contest season I thought to do some cable work today.
Made up a cable to key the amplifier and wanted to use the key-out jack
therefor
(only need to sink 13,8 V / 60 mA so should work perfectly well). But the amp
isn't keying. So I measured the RCA jack and unkeyed I can measure infinite
resistance as it should be the case but if I ptt the radio no change on the RCA
jack?! Should be around zero then so no keying there.

Checked the manual but couldn't find anything related to configuration of that
jack, seems it should be always working, right? Any ideas why it is not?

Checked the LP key-out on the ACC connector and that is working properly (but
not enough for the amp, ofcourse, only measured there for verification the
radio
is really keying out, hi).

Can anybody help?

One addition:
The s-meter also shows S5-6 level without a signal source (in all cases: no
antenna, dummyload or antenna connected), while all other bands are okay with

[Elecraft] Strange behaviour of K144XV :-((

2010-08-23 Thread Olli
Hi guys,

after getting the missing cables today (thanks Elecraft) I immediately started
installing the K144XV into my K3. Everything went together smoothly, no
problems, at least hardware-wise.

But, I have hundreds of birdies throughout the whole 2 m band. :-(( It does not
matter if antenna connected or not, or connected to a dummyload, so I suspect
these are internally and some of them are really annoying. Already checked all
the TMP cable connections, everything seems okay.

Furthermore when switching down to 28 MHz I now have strange noise when tuning
the VFO between 28.002 and 28.007 sounding like synthesizer noise which was
definitely not there before. :-((

Any ideas what the reasons are and how to solve the problem(s)?

As I do not have the KRX3 module I tried to put the 12 V wire going to the
other
side of the mainboard to power the K144XV like shown in the manual but as the
wire is so long it is laying on the mainboard. Could that be the reason, some
pickup there?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [Elecraft] Roofing filter for CW

2010-02-17 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
One thing to remeber is that if you get strong signal within your roofing
filter passband you will notice that AGC will go up to protect DSP
overloading. Then you have use for narrower roofing filters.

I have 400Hz but considering to add 200Hz after working couple of CW and
RTTY contest on 40 meters :)

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] TX CW discrepancy

2010-01-31 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
What I have noticed is that K3 internal keyer weight changes between VOX and
use of footswitch.

I tend to press footswitch time to time to prevent amplifier relay sound (
AL1200 relay is loud ) but noticed this bit annoying feature after trying K3
internal keyer instead of microkeyer.

The weight change is roughly from 1.10 to 1.20 ( from Vox to Footswitch )

Re: [Elecraft] K3: AGC Adjustment

2009-12-09 Thread Olli Tuppurainen
I have found so many different adjustment parameters for AGC in K3 that I
would apperciate " AGC settings for dummies " type of instructions. :)

I previously owned IC-756PRO3 which can be used as reference of well
functioning AGC among DSP radios. Very pleasant experience.

Re: [Elecraft] tx eq for K3

2009-01-22 Thread olli
Hi,
i discovered some days ago a significant delay in the TX SSB Monitor.
I turned all TX EQ setting to 0 and hoped the delay will be smaller,
but no effect for my ears.
I actually have no K3, but I'm thinking to get one soon. The only
point which is bothering me is the delay in the SSB TX monitor.
I'm wondering if it is possible to bypass the digital filters and
improve delay. I'm really not in the DSP Software (I guess this part
is placed in there), but maybe it is possible to use DMA transfer if
all equalizer settings are 0.

I'm going to a friend with a K3 the next weekend, maybe a
softwareupdate fixed the delay or improved a bit more in my direction.
Last time i used it was in october.
