Thanks Dave, I have the KXPD2 paddle but do not use it much as I am a straight
key guy or bug.

Thanks

Paul,

Check your KXPD3 keyer paddle. It turns out that early versions had screw
heads that were a bit too long that stuck out the back side of the paddle
housing, causing a short to the chassis, if the heads bit through the black
paint.

I have one of these, and it worked fine until the screw head on one side
managed to work itself through the paint, then suddenly I was getting ERR KEY
on power up. Elecraft service has shorter screws to fix the issue. I just put
a small patch of black tape on the bare metal chip location under the paddle
housing, and all is OK. Some day I may ask for the modified screws (or paddle,
if it has to be replaced as a unit). Fixing the chip in the black housing is
another matter entirely. Shame it happened on a practically brand new radio.

73, hope that helps,

Thanks guys for the words on my KX2. I was watching the volt meter I have on
the power supply. It dropped to 13V when I keyed the rig then shot up to 13.9
and sat rock solid. I changed power supplys and all is well now. The little
radio seems to be happy again. And Thanks Don for the advice on NOT sending the
rig in. I will check my cables as well, tnx all de N0NBD Paul Smith

[Elecraft] My KX2 may be sick

2018-09-25 Thread Paul Smith
Last night after working a couple SKCC guys on 3550 my KX2 just shut down and
said on the display err key. I could not get it to do anything so I sent the
configure file to it. It seemed to be ok but shut down again a few minutes
later. It has done the same thing twice this morning. A cheep led volt meter
reads that the power supply drops to 13.6 volts while transmitting. What the
heck do I need to look for or is my radio number 855 wanting a roadtrip to the
home factory?

Thanks in advance de Paul N0NBD

Paul, eliminate some of the variables to isolate the problem:

- Use a dummy load and step through the KX2 bands to be sure it can transmit
directly into it. Use the TUNE button to get that done. Make sure the
internal antenna tuner is set to BYP mode.

- Then, add in the transmission line with the dummy load terminating it.
Remove the hand-built balun to do this so you're testing the line only.

- Then, add in the balun and retest on all bands but connect it directly to
the KX2 and terminate the other end with a dummy load. This allows you to
test it by itself. It better read 1:9 or 9:1 depending on how it is
connected.

- Lastly, add the transmission line and the balun together and then connect
the dummy load to the output of it. Be sure you're stepping through all the
bands when you do this, too.

As you can see, isolating the items will help you determine where, if any,
there's a problem. It isn't appropriate to jump to conclusion - yet -
there's a problem with the KX2. Eliminate all that is known to work
properly and you'll have your answer.

Cheers,

David

[Elecraft] Question about my KX2

2017-08-15 Thread Paul Smith
I have and love my KX2 serial number 855. Lately the ATU seems to be "turning
loose of the setting" I usually can hit the tune button again and get it to
tune. I use a doublet at 50 ft fed with 450 ohm line and a home brew balun/
Unun. I question the balun as when I ordered, the wrong cores came and I wound
the balun which was supposed to be a 9:1.

This may not be enough information but the manual has not offered me much as I
have done some reading.

Any thoughts out there? Does it need to go to California to be looked into?
This is my first ATU.

Thanks in advance de Paul Smith N0NBD

[Elecraft] More KX2 recieve questions

2017-01-18 Thread Paul Smith
I called the 4SQRP net tonight on 3564. I had my KX2 for a transmitter and my
old tribander for receive. Here is what things are set at.

As I was instructed earlier the pre amp was on although the word pre on the
screen went off 4 times during the net and the button took a couple taps to get
the pre back on the screen. Is this normal?

The BW is at 2.80

RF gain is 0

NR is off

the APF is off when the button is held a narrow filter kicks in.

I am ocnfused what to do and or to look for. I could hear checkins on my
Tribander and not a peep heard on the KX2

The antennas as before were 102 ft doublet and a zepp

Any ideas what to check next?

Thanks

[Elecraft] KX2 Receive problem!?

2017-01-18 Thread Paul Smith
I have a KX2 nr 855 I bought in August.This is my first venture in in a
sophisticated radio. I have been operating kit built rigs for years. My KX2 has
the latest firmware MCU revision 02.69.

The receive seems to be down quite a bit. My antennas are a 102 ft doublet at
50 ft and a Zepp at 50 feet. Each fed with 450 ladder line. On the 4SQRP nets I
have been frequently been told they can hear me and I hear NO ONE.

The question is could someone share the setup information with me for filters
and such. My ears do not require much filtering as my old ELMER used to YELL at
me use the filter between ur ears. I have made some contacts but I would like
to hear more.

Thanking in advance de Paul N0NBD

[Elecraft] Weird startup

2016-11-29 Thread Paul Smith
I am not sure what my KX2 has been doing but it seemed "deaf at times" I have
operated nothing but the simplest kit built rigs for 15 years so the KX2 has a
bunch of stuff Im not sure of yet.

I just this morning upgraded the software to the latest version. It seems to
hear really well I worked a guy in TX and he was gangbusters at 5 watts. Thanks
Wayne and Eric for a great radio and easy fixes.

[Elecraft] Toroid winding

2004-07-10 Thread Paul Smith
Hi all

A question regarding the winding of a broadband transformer for a QRP tuner for
my K1:
Does it matter where a primary winding is located along the circumference of
the secondary ? Will it make any difference if the primary is closer to one
terminal of the secondary or not ? I have a 47T secondary which occupies about
220 degrees of the core and the primary is just 4T in total.
Many thanks,
Paul
