Re: [Elecraft] Speakers - Optimal Frequency Range?
I have spent may years in “hi end” audio… some building some selling some just fooling around. Does wire matter? is there a difference between tubes and soild state? Can I hear 20K? does it matter if I can’t hear 20K? Why build a wide band amp if you can hear it? All these questions really don't matter one bit. The ONLY question the listener need ask… Do I LIKE how it sounds? That's it folks, no more no less. Simplistic… yep sure is. A few years back I was attending an audio show in Denver with a few “audio” friends. We would typically visit different rooms together and give a listen to the various systems in each room. To my surprise, we all had different ideas about what system sounded good. I like room 990 but Glen said it sucked. He liked the system in 512 but to me it nearly drove me to drinking. Chris loved 234 but the rest of us were sure he was ready for the funny farm. We all “hear” differently… I love how my K3 sounds with high end speakers left and right side... and a fine digital amp that drives the speakers. I eq the crap out of the K3 after 8K and set the tone of my CW note to 440… Near a natural “C”. to me that sounds easy and warm. But to my old ears the best tone in the world was and is a fine old Drake or a Collins pure analog signal run thru a nice 8" alnico speaker in an open baffle. That, to me, is simply the best. [Elecraft] Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA Penlight Cells 9x
News from Corry at The Energizer Tech dept. He said it is VERY rare to find a discharged battery. He said he has heard of 2 since the were introduced. He also said that the average voltage should be around 1.6 volts no load. The voltage of 1.39 was very rare indeed. He further stated that all batteries are tested before that are packaged. He further asked me if I would ship him the bad cell… I will do. Seems like the non-rechargables are a lousy deal… 15 bucks or so for 8 cells. The best part about these cells is the very long storage and they will believer current at a very wide range of temps. If ...I buy them again I will certainly test each cell before installing them. Lesson learned. [Elecraft] K3 Low Power Amp problems… Fixed by me and David!
I was trying to do a 5 watt cal but only got 3.5 watts and got an error code... It was working but now no go. I called Elecraft and talked to David. After some easy on phone tests... He said to re bias the the driver(Q2) for and the two output devises (Q4 and Q5). I did that with the help of a simple procedure Dave sent me... And what do you know... Q4 would not bias. The pot related to Q4 had zero effect. I called David and he said he suspected a bad output transistor. Today the 3 transistors in question arrived in the mail. So using my brand new Hako Solder sucker Model# 808, removed all of the solder around the pins of Q2, Q4 and Q5. With the solder removed the parts fell out onto the bench! No desolder ribbon, no prying, no pulling, no cutting...just heat the pin/pad, pull the trigger the pump sucks it dry! And I do mean DRY. I checked the 3 transistors with the handy dandy M3 transistor checker... Q4 was a dead short David of Elecraft... THANK YOU... P.S. Currently I use a program called Crossover to run windows apps. The point of Crossover is that you do not need any Microsoft software running in the background. [Elecraft] KX1 Displayed voltage question
I have applied 13.66 volts from my HP lab power supply... also I measured it with the Fluke 179 and a Fluke 2840. Both Flukes are more or less in agreement. The KX1 battery display says it is 13.3vdc when it is powered up. A... is there a way to adjust the display voltage on the KX1 so that it more closely matches the Flukes etc? OR B...is the .3 vdc difference about the correct voltage drop for the KX1 and then the KX1 is more or less correct and no adjustment not needed? Re: [Elecraft] Looking for KX3 external speaker suggestions
I use this with my K3... It is the best portable solution out there... Plus you can use it with blue tooth from any blue tooth source. ipod ipad laptop etc etc... K3 with a blue tooth mod... no wires or you can wire it. Plus it has a mike built in. Lion battery 12 hours plus or minus. But the best part is that it sounds really really good. Goes loud if need be. Built in 2 channel amp. Built in Battery. Headphone jack and USB port. Not plastic... well built. Well thought out. Kinda heavy... surprising the first time you pick it up. Check this out... read the reviews... I bought mine at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest this year. I use it almost every day... no problems... It was made for portable traveling audio nuts... [Elecraft] Grounds... I know, I know... its a Dead issue BUT... (no Pun)
I really hate to bring it up again... But hear me out: My A/C service entrance does not have a ground rod. My house was built about 25 years ago.' I pulled the service front panel and found the following: All the grounds and neutrals are bonded to the metal chassis as they are supposed to be. But there is no wire for a connection to a ground ROD! It looks like they used a solid metal pipe that houses the big A/C wire inside of this pipe. This pipe IS connected to the service entrance by some metal gland nuts. The 2 1/2" pipe goes outside of the house and is buried underground. It goes off to a transformer that is about 100 yards away. So my question: IS this pipe MY Ground rod? [Elecraft] Lightning in New Mexico
The ground rod (#1) I placed just outside my shack/ house is about 16 or 17 feet from the meter/ ground rod that connects to the AC mains. So if I run a bunch of fat parallel wires that are bonded to BOTH ground rods that will be a good thing to do. (and required...by law)(knock on the the door ITS the ground police) As a matter of fact during the lightning season I disconnect the antennas from my gear when it looks like the Wx is gonna go south. (South,??? why not North???) Antennas consist of a 20 meter Gap vertical and nested marconi for 40m and 80m at 24 feet... Kinda like a dipole. These antennas run to an outside remote coax switch. I have beat into the dirt another 8' foot ground rod(G.R. #2) next to the outside coax switch and have installed a Poly Phasor on the output coax that goes into the shack and poly phasors on each of the coax cables from the antennas. All the poly phasor's ground lugs are connected to ground rod #2. (Each Poly phasor has its own wire going to ground rod #2) This remote coax switch and ground rod #2 are about 12 feet from the AC mains. If I understand correctly, I should also bond this ground rod #2 to the the AC mains ground rod as well But if I do that then those antennas will be connected to the grounds in the house via the AC mains ground rod? This seems counterintuitive? I mean... now there will be the very real possibility of lightning in the house wiring??? Again Thank you for your help!!! Phil Santa Fe P.S... We get lightning almost as bad as Florida. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Lightning season is on the way in New Mexico.
Lightning question: I have driven an 8 foot copper clad rod just out side my operating station. Its about 6 feet from the rod to my desk. I have attached a solid copper wire (1/4" thick) to the ground post (with a ground rod clamp) The wire goes thru the wall and is bonded to a copper pipe that is 1-1/8" wide that is just under the desk. So on to my question: What is the BEST way to connect my equipment (k3, SB-200 and a remote coax switch) to the copper pipe? Coax braid from RG8 or solid copper wire? and why Thank You guys... Circa 1956 had set up in his shack a super cooled 2 meter antenna As the temp dropped he could shorten the elements and shill have the same swr's, watts out. [Elecraft] That Little battery in the K2 # 01264
I just got my K2 back from Don and Allen... Thank you...Both. But I might have a problem. When I hooked up the rig and listened to 40m and 20m both on SSB the sound coming from the speaker was raspy and distorted. Also it sounded very thin. So I plugged in my AKG 701 headphones...Yes, that was better. But I of course wanted to get to the bottom of the problem...so I unscrewed the left side next to the speaker. Aha! that little flat battery had slipped out of it's holder and was resting on the speaker magnet shield. (No doubt it popped loose in shipping) So my question...What does that battery do? Would it have anything to do with the raspy audio? Can I just put it back in and be good to go? Or am I simply screwed. K2# 01264 Now upgraded with 100 watt amp etc etc. Thank You all for help. Re: [Elecraft] Soldering Naked - Toxic Effects
I started slinging solder when I was about ten or so... Thats 66-10 Uh 56 years. Knight kits... ( were they mean to built at night? )(I built them at night) i really thought there were made to be built at night... knight Kits... Solder smells very different than it in the 50's it's more nasty now. The sweet smell of burning rosin never bothered me. I liked it! We all knew it had lead and it was a bad idea to eat it. No one said the fumes were bad for you. (although I am sure those nasty solder makers, those evil corporation chiefs...they knew! They have always known)(just like the tobacco boys.)( Nd of course the GMO gene guys) But like cigarettes, rosin is very addictive. One sniff and your done. Why else would you spend a lifetime breathing it in? Do they talk about it... No, that's how they "hook" us E.E,s It happened to me. Now we have safety features like exhaust fans, lead free solder...SMT and wave soldering. Kids today can't get hooked on rosin. But they sure have plenty of other mind bending Substances to fool with. So do a kid a favor... get him hooked. I am the pusher man. And yeah...lead is toxic... But what the hell most things are. Re: [Elecraft] Use of external speakers/amp
Ah yes the endless quest for great "tone". Yesterday there was a YL in the Calif QSO party. She was W6RER In Butt county. Her voice was clean very clear but what got me was the quality and tone of her voice. It was very easy to listen to. Good tone. Warm sounding with out being mushy. But as I said, clear but not edgy at all. It seemed she had the perfect mike / eq / radio combo. Wonder what she was using? I have my K3 and K2 outputs driving a pair of Fostex alnico full range speakers. The cabs are of a modest size but built with 3/4" plywood. It is my belief that the alnico magnet is one of the reasons the "tone" in my system is as good as it is. Today it is fairly rare to find alnico in speakers. (expensive) it also helps to have speakers that are fairly efficient... Over 90db per watt. With 96 db or better being a good target. The more efficient the speaker the less work the amp has to do and therefore lower distortion. I use simple pencil tube stereo homebuilt amp to drive the Fostex speakers or headphones. Headphone are the AKG 701. Sometimes the ssb transmissions sound like good or even great AM broadcast. Good tone for me is what it's all about. Phil Santa Fe, NM Build your own gear... Re: [Elecraft] KPA500
So I got me a ten watt k3... I like it... It is very good. It works. And I'm thinking of a KPA500. But to run the KPA500 I gotta get the 100 watt add-on first. Hu Is that a deal breaker? Might be. If I don't get the hundred water then I can't get fully output.!.?&-¥xxx So the true cost of the kPA500 is way more... For me with just ten watts. I really only want ten watts. But when I feel the need, the need for speed (yeah I had to say it) I would like to hit the big lever marked kill and blast them out of their socks. "Can't hear me OM?? He switches the amp to kill How's ur copy now om? The screenplay is in my head... Among other things. I would like to be able to upgrade with out the interim 100 watter. Yeah, I know, i won't work but I can ask those guys who sweat solder and cash flow and you never know they just might be able to do it. To me the K2 was a total mind melt...and the K3 is beyond my wildest dreams. Quite an upgrade from the old Heathkits I used to build...
