[Elecraft] KPA1500 fan noise concern
I'm on the list for a '1500, expected sometime in August (maybe). However, I'm getting concerned about the reported high fan noise level. I currently have a '500, and following a suggestion a year or two ago, I've turned the fans around 'backwards' and they seem to be quieter in this configuration. I would give the '500 a "quiet" in the noise department. Temperature does not seem to be an issue. In addition, I have an Acom 1000, which is also a quiet amp - fan as well as relays. Hard to hear it in operation (but the 3 minute warmup usually seems like three hours. :-) I ordered the '1500 In the quest to be a couple of instant db louder, but if I don't hear some resolution of the noise 'problem', I'm going to put the order on hold until it is solved. I do have many headsets which I usually wear, including the Bose QC15 noise cancelling model, but I'd hate to be FORCED into using them. A concerned citizen. I would appreciate it if the transceiver had bolted connections or at least double up the power poles What I have done in the past, (with cheaper radios) is to bypass the power connector, and solder heavy wires directly to the DC input pads inside the radio. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR 12V
I had this problem with #1823 just after I returned from an expedition in 2010. (lucky, eh?) It is indeed a result of the steel pins carrying the 12v to the PA becoming tarnished. Not trusting myself to replace the pins, I opted for the "bypass operation" - wire jumpers around the pins (Elecraft can send you picturs and instructions). Piece of cake, and works FB. I better post this before I'm too late. I'd like: All the features of my KPA500, plus 1500w output, 160 - 6m. 2 inputs. 2 outputs (or more. Manual switching is OK). Built-in antenna tuner (good for 3:1 SWR). Reasonably quiet fans. Separate p/s, or remote control head (space considerations). (I understand the difficulty of getting high power from the p/s to the PA.) I don't expect to carry it around, so weight is not a problem for me. After 50+ years of building radios, I built my K3 very carefully. However, on completion, the output was very intermittent. Tapping on the cabinet would trigger the problem. I tried everything, including on line and on-the-phone discussions with the Elcraft service dept. Finally, I boxed it up and sent it to the doctor. They diagnosed the problem right out of the box, with no tools. I had placed two lockwashers on the wrong end of the screws holding the driver transistors to the bottom of the case, so they made only intermittent contact. Bingo! Was my face red! With all due respect to Tom (he's been on the air two years longer than I :-) that's exactly my point - 'weight' and 'ratio' are two different things!!! My weight is set to 52%, my ratio is set to 3:1. >Then if someone ask you to change your weight to the 'heavy side', >you could then comply with that persons wishes? I'm going to start using "QCW?" at the beginning of my QSOs - "How would you like me to set my keyer?" >...anything other than the standard 3/1 and you were sending at over 50 wpm, >not too many folks could copy you... That's probably true, but my ratio IS 3:1. I agree that too heavy a weight would be hard to copy at that speed. [Elecraft] Keyer weighting (was 'Elecraft keyer chip replacement')
Many people confuse "ratio" with "weight". 'Weight' makes both the dots and dashes longer (or shorter), but preserves the 3:1 ratio between the two. I've used some radios with internal keyers that have adjustable "weight" (wrongly named) that only makes the dots longer. Sounds terrible, IMHO. I prefer my weight slightly on the 'heavy' side (52% on my Super CMOS III). 'Choppy' sounding CW usually means that the weighting is too light. I always use an external keyer that does exactly what I want, except in a contest, where my microHam keyer (via N1MM) has provisions for correctly changing weight. Sounds good either way. My internal keyers are for emergency use only. [Elecraft] K3: Zipper
The dreaded K3 'zipper while tuning' appeared suddenly yesterday in the middle of the CQ VHF contest. I've had #1823 since 2008, and never had (heard?) it before, so I didn't pay attention to the comments and 'cures' for it. Silly me. Can someone pse point me in the direction of a fix? >...I found the K3 was sadly lacking in good receive audio. Too much hiss and >too tinny sounding... "tiring" to listen to for long periods of time. My sediments exactly, when I first got my K3 (#1823). I'm an ex-audio pro too. However, after the audio board upgrade, and the 'newer' software (4.51?), I'm happy with the audio quality. Definitely a worthwhile mod. Only one thing left to do to make me ecstatic - separate audio gain menu settings for headset and speakers. "Lo" gain setting is best for my headset, but nowhere near loud enough for a speaker (I've tried many external speakers). "High" gain setting hurts my ears inside my headset, but has good level for speaker monitoring while I'm in the shack. You could consider this a "feature request". [Elecraft] K3: 4.51 vs WPX CW
Setting up the K3's new 4.51 AGC, I took an average of the THR and SLP settings some of the guys were using. I had to do a few minor adjustments to prevent the strong signals from hurting my ears. By Saturday night, I realized that I never had a 'click' problem from anyone! Non solam sed etiam (gotta find some use for my high-school Latin), I noticed that I had been operating with the NB on most of the afternoon, in spite of which all sigs sounded good (certainly lot like 'before', when the clix drove me crazy, and the NB chopped the signals up). I turned off the NB, and discovered that it had been eliminating some hash from the neighbours! Holy mackinaw - it works! So: what a tremendous difference! This is the K3 I expected when I bought it! Tnx to the Elecraft crew for their efforts!! Anybody who hasn't tried it yet is in for a pleasant surprise. I'm doing SO-15m, so I have the night off. CU all in the pileups tomorrow. [Elecraft] P3 cursors
I'm still getting used to my new P3. The original P3 firmware had the baud rate bug, and when I changed to 01.16, all was well (K3 f/w 4.50). I then loaded K3 f/w 4.51 for better AGC - and here's the confusion: Under 4.50, I coulda' sworned that the P3 cursor for VFO B (violet) was only displayed when the SUB rcvr was on (good, avoids clutter), but now (4.51) it is displayed continuously. Am I mistaken? Have I pushed some hidden button?(it's possible) I do find it distracting. Incidentally, it seems that I prefer to leave the P3 in "fixed-tune" mode. In "tracking" mode, the VFO B cursor chases itself up and down the band. Unfortunately, I've given my borrowed KE7X book back to its rightful owner, so I have to ask you guys. (OK, OK, I'll get my own copy!) One other thing - what do you guys do with MKRA and MKRB? I can't seem to find a practical use for that feature. Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX delay choices
I don't use QSK - I don't like the noise between characters. In casual DXing, I (almost) always use a footswitch to ensure the amp has settled before any RF hits it. I always use an external keyer. While contesting, I use N1MM to microHAM (Winkey) to K3. I'm never sure whether to use the TX Delay available in the microHAM software or in the K3 (or both). (Any hints, Joe?) Years ago, using QSK with a 1kmp (adjustable TX delay) with an Ameritron AL1200 (not a QSK amp), in a contest I would often get "UE7XF?". Using 'break-in' + 'VOX' would get "VE7XF". When I switched to a true QSK amp (Acom 1000), lead element elimination in QSK was no longer a problem. I still didn't use it because of the noise, but I was confident that the amp was happy. Now, I mostly use the K3, and I have a choice of 3 amps (the above plus KPA500), so solving the 'Where do I put the TX Delay' question would be a help to put my mind at ease. Re: [Elecraft] another contesting how-to question
Back in my NA days (under DOS), I used the serial and then the printer port to key the radio via a simple transistor interface. When I switched to N1MM (under XP), I used a microHAM interface to avoid the stuttering, and to exchange info (frequency, etc.) with the radio, as well as send perfect CW via the built-in Winkey interface. I understand that N1MM can key the radio directly, but can it exchange info with the radio via the RS-232 port? I've never tried it. Re: [Elecraft] Older K3/100s and the "ERR12V" problem
I had this problem after #1823 came back from PJ6A. Luckily, it didn't happen while we were there, although another K3 did show this error. Tnx goodness we had a spare (mine). I bought a set of gold pins (they were not offered for free), but elected to use the 'bypass surgery' method, suggested as an alternative, as I was afraid of damaging the PC boards during the removal/replacement of the pins. The bypass was easy to do, and I have not had the 'problem' since. A few of my K3 friends have had the problem too, and I have, since my episode, recommended the bypass solution. Cheap, easy, works. [Elecraft] Screwdrivers
>...I seldom take a short-cut and use a driver that doesn't fit solidly. Amen to that, Ron - the right tool for the job! I don't know if you poor disadvantaged 'mericans have access to these, but my far-and-away favourite for Elecraft assembly is a Picquic multibit screwdriver, made in Canada (we don't make much these days either). It's made in various models, each with a couple of different sizes of straight, Philips, and Robertson (square). ('straight' screws/bolts are impossible to find in hardware stores these days - Robertson is the Canadian standard, with Philips in second place.) Just a little screwdriver history for you :-) The Philips #1 fits the Elecraft screws perfectly, and the bit, held in place by magnetic force, is easily removed for fast twiddling by hand. They are available in colours, too - my big manly ones are black or orange, and I even have a girly pink one for those teeny-weeny screws. Pick a bright coloured one, more easily found in the dim light under the workbench, or in the weeds under the beam. To my surprise and confusion, the K3 appeared to be drawing 2.7A with the power switch OFF!!! Various opinions expressed by this list notwithstanding, it took me a few days to realize what was happening - The digital meter, a Watt's Up, was being influenced by the HV radiation from the display on the 756 ProIII, sitting directly above the K3. I turned off the ProIII, and all returned to the expected 'normal'. Just another of life's little mysteries. [Elecraft] Clicks and the 10m contest
When I could, I paid more attention to the click problem during this contest (after the CQ WW CW experience). Many times, some guy/guyette would snuggle up to me and start CQing, often .500 khz away, sometimes .400 and even .300 (measured). Obviously, my transmissions weren't interfering with them. Meanwhile, although their S-9 signals were outside my passband (usually I use between .400 and .250 hz), their clicks were S-6 to S-7, a major problem when I was called by weaker signals. I tried PREAMP on/off and AGC fast/slow/off, without noticing much difference. I am unable to determine if the problem is with my receiver or the other transmitters. To try to lessen the problem, I now see the solution as this: I need to dirty-up my signal, to keep them farther away from me. Why should they not suffer, as I am suffering? As far as the so-called 'mush' is concerned, I don't think it is a problem in my case. Yes, the great unwashed all wind up on the same frequency after clicking on their bandmaps, but I can usually outsmart them one way or another. I think it's time for a Q signal to tell them that they are interfering with one another, and need to spread out a bit. How about QSO (spread out)? Hmmm... that one's already in use. OK, how about QRM ("you are being interfered with")? I use that one, but to minimum avail. I'm open to good suggestions. We can send the best choice to N0AX to put in his Contest Update column, and maybe publicize it a bit. I use another radio for the RAC 'test, to see if it fares any better. In between contests, I'm on 10m AM with my Ranger and R-390A. No clicks there! Re: [Elecraft] K3 12v ERR
>...the power was lower than usual and there was a 12 ERR message on screen... >I turned it off and on again... >the ERR message came up again and 8 watts indicated. Power amp fried? Nope - you just have an early K3 with steel pins between the motherboard and the PA. They have become tarnished with heat, and won't pass the current. All early K3s can expect to have this problem sooner or later, IMHO. That was a big 'oops' - newer K3s have gold pins. K3 Support can send you pictures of a 'bypass surgery' mod that will be a good workaround. I did it, and have had no further problems. [Elecraft] Contests and the K3
First of all, let's rename this thread. I hate it when the subject line has nothing to do with the contents. This has nothing to do with scores. OK, kiddies, pull a chair up to the fire and let Uncle Ralphie tell you about his experiences on the bands. >...Once again this year the K3s AGC failed to perform adequately for us... Good ol' Fred hits the nail on the head again. I've been meaning to report my observations during the SS CW and WW CW. The AGC is my least favourite part of the K3. I've tried everyone's suggestions as to settings, and it sort of works, but I'm not satisfied. I compare it to my most recent 'analog' radio, the 1000mp, full of Inrads. During both the SS and WW, I was plagued with clicks from stations just outside my passband. I don't hear the signals, just the clicks. An S9+20 signal that I can't hear produces S9 clicks that cover up weaker signals. I usually thought they come from an un-modified 1000mp (bad reputation for clicks), and during the SS suspected that it might be done deliberatly to give the runners a nice clear frequency. H Maybe should de-modify my 'mp and give them a dose of their own medicine. While running JAs in the WW, I had a station set up shop less than .4 khz away and give me headaches with his clicks (I'm using a .250 filter and couldn't hear his signal). I even moved to his freq and said "bad clicks" (it was a JA). In desparation, I tried turning off the AGC, and whaddaya know - the clix almost disappeared! That was fine until I was called by a LOUD signal - ouch! AGC back on, and I had to find another frequency. I'll have to do more research to see if this happens with every signal, or just those with a tendency to click. Maybe in the 10m contest. Somebody's gotta come up with better settings (or better software) for the AGC. And I don't wanna hear from those who say "It's a very flexible system - just tweak all the settings until you find the one you like". That tells me nothing. And I know enough not to run with the NB on. Speaking of which, I'm having trouble with the NB, too. If I adjust it to help with the power line noise, it shortens the characters too much - sounds like everyone has their keyer weight turned way down. (I thought that was the case, too, until I turned the NB off.) There have been cases on 160 where turning the NB on increases the 'mush' and makes signals less readable. As far as audio harshness goes, putting the DSP upgrade into #1823 smoothed out the audio considerably - almost as good as the 'mp. I do not rail against Elecraft the company, whom I respect. (Although I think the comment on them not being contesters has some merit.) I just do not understand parts of the K3. Respectfully submitted, Ralph, VE7XF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

>I just do a quick A>B to store the DX frequency in VFO B and >continue tuning the band. That's all well and good, but it doesn't address the problem. [Elecraft] K3 DVK vs N1MM difficulties
Hi Gang: In the recent CQ WW SSB, I used N1MM 11.10.3 to key the KDVR3 via a microHAM CW Keyer, using the N1MM macros provided by N6ML. It worked, but with every second CQ (press of , or via ESM), N1MM popped up a window complaining about a missing .WAV file, which had to be closed before any further action was possible. The workaround was to close the window and keep going - a royal PITA. I have done this before, with a previous version of N1MM, and I don't remember this problem. Perhaps I should ask for help on the N1MM reflector, but I'm not a member (yet). Any help/hints/suggestions greatfully received.
