I'll third the Siglent SDS 1202X-E. It also replaced my Tek 465. Plenty of
scope for my needs. Works well when working on a K2.

I second the Siglent SDS 1202X-E. I bought one last year to service the
Elecraft rigs that come through and it is more scope than I need but has
some really nice features. A lot of scope for the money. Much smaller on my
bench than my old analog Tek 465.

Re: [Elecraft] Rhombic antenna "gain"

2019-09-13 Thread Richard S. Leary
Also had an array of rhombics at Bingen, plenty of SP-600's. Used primarily for
reception. Our GRC-26 used a dipole for xmt/rcv DF work. That was 55 to 58. I'd
have loved to have my K3 and 3 el steppIR back then. They didn't get the FLR-9
at Chicksands until after I left in Jun 62. Got my ham license in Nov 61 while
in G land but didn't operate until I got back stateside. Yeah, good ole days.

Re: [Elecraft] O.T. Morse is not dead, at least in the U.S. Navy

2017-11-20 Thread Richard S. Leary
Kevin,
My two cents worth. I was a USAF Morse Intercept Operator for almost 8
years. Started in Mar 1955. School was 7 months. Of that, CW training was 3+
hours a day, 5 days a week, for 7 months. Graduating speed requirement was
20 wpm. I started knowing zilch, ended up school at 23 wpm. Characters
taught then were A thru Z, 1 thru 0, plus "special characters". Total
character count was in excess of 45 characters. Some special characters were
colon (:), semi-colon (;), ampersand (&), dollar ($), exclamation point (!),
quotes ("), plus other normal punctuation marks. I worked as a MIO for 6 1/2
years in Europe. Germany, Turkey, and England. Consecutive tours. We copied
CW as it was sent. If it ended up looking like Greek, or any other language,
it was still CW, but transcribed onto paper, as whatever was sent. No
computers back then, just a pair of Hammerlund SP-600's, R-390's or 51J's,
and a Royal or Remington manual mil spec typewriter, and lots of 6 ply, fan
fold paper with carbons. In Turkey, the building next to our ops area was
Navy ops. Their CT's were reknown for being pretty excellent operators. Glad
to see the Navy MIO's back. Just my $0.02 worth.

The article indicated that they are only learning morse for a standard latin
(ie. English) alphabet. A number of years ago I visited the radio room while
on a boat cruise in the Caribbean. The radio operator was copying down morse
coming in over the radio. I tried to see what I could copy in my head but I
couldn't make sense of it. When I looked at what the radio operator was
writing down it was Greek. I don't mean as in "it was Greek to me" but that
it was actually in the Greek language. The US Navy morse interceptors will
need to be able to copy morse in multiple languages to be truly effective.

Re: [Elecraft] Upgrading K3 --- order of installation

2016-07-14 Thread Richard S. Leary
Brian,
I just added the KIO3B, KXV3B, and KBPF3A mods. As per W3FPR, Don's advise,
I did the KXV3B first, then the KIO3B, then the KBPF3A. I don't have the
KAT3A, but I do have a K3/100, with ATU, internal 2 mtr xvtr, and the 2nd
receiver.
Had to take off top cover, remove 2 mtr xvtr, 2nd rcvr, then the left side
panel (makes getting to the KXV3B install a lot easier), and then one
section of the bottom cover. None of any of the procedures are any trouble.
Just be careful doing the KBPF3A stuff. I had a couple of SMT's go flying,
but actually got them back. Pretty straight forward. Just be careful, and
read the instructions two steps ahead. Everything worked just fine when it
got put back together. I'm 80, left handed, have bilateral tremors, and
still it's a breeze. Enjoy.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Decoding high speed CW

2016-03-28 Thread Richard S. Leary
Jim, Paul
Paul, Jim is correct. Practice, practice, practice, then sooner than not you
will be copying in your head.
Jim's ASA training and experience works for him. For me it was USAF CW
Intercept and over 7 years experience. I don't use skimmers or cw decoders.
My K3 has one, and to be honest, I use it very infrequently, mostly to check
on the other guys/gals speed when it gets up there. I may have to hear a
call more than once, at 35 or higher, but not often. It's usually the
QRM/QRN that gets you. Then there's the QSB. Ever copy "weak" sigs Jim?
Do your practicing "On the Air", not by machine, if you can. W1AW code
practice is good, and there are others out there I believe as well. Start at
a speed you can copy fairly well, then work up from there. I wish you well,
and welcome to the world of CW.
Jim and I might even have to chat off list. Have to figure he was in Germany
also.
Take care and have fun.

Peter,
None of the decoders out there, including the better ones (internal to the
K3/K3S and the KX3) decode CW even close to accurately unless the conditions
are ideal and the sending operator is close to perfect in his/her sending so
the ultimate answer is "suck it up" and learn to decode it in your head.

If you rely on the decoders, you will have difficulty in actually learning
to copy in your head and you will get enough call signs wrong in your
contest logs that they could even be rejected due to too many "busted"
calls.

That being said, as for the decoders, I was a Morse Intercept Operator
during the first 6 years of my 20 year Army Security Agency career. I had
the copying of Morse code drummed into my head 8 hours a day, but that was
copying mostly 5 letter or number coded groups on a typewriter.
It took a large amount of money to train us electronic spies, and the NSA
decided to design a decoder to replace us, figuring that a computer could do
a better job. They spent several millions of dollars on this electronic
black box (back in the 60's) and discovered that the human brain was a much
better decoder than a machine could ever be. Every little static burst
would disrupt the decoding and it would take a few characters to catch back
up. Also, if the code wasn't being sent by automatic means (in those days
that was a punched paper tape) and the receiving conditions weren't very
close to perfect (almost never happens these days and even worse back then)
the decoder output gibberish.
After a couple years of mostly abject failures and after spending millions
of dollars, they abandoned the project.

Wayne and others have done a marvelous job of computer coding, allowing the
firmware in Elecraft's radios (and other stand-alone devices) to decode CW,
but the above conditions apply to them as well as to NSA and NSA spent a
heck of a lot more money trying to achieve perfect copy than Elecraft had in
their coffers. Bottom line, use it for occasional help, but work at
learning to read it in your head yourself. It isn't as hard as most people
make it out to be and all it takes is practice. That's the absolute bottom
line, it takes practice. If you are willing to go the extra mile and put in
that practice, the rewards will outweigh the initial frustrations.

73 and good luck,
Jim Sheldon - W0EB

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Website

2015-12-31 Thread Richard S. Leary
Bob,
Elecraft site comes up fine here, south of Tacoma, WA. Using Comcast cable.
URL I use is http://www.elecraft.com/, then just work through the site. When
I have a connection problem, I usually just unplug the power to both my
router and modem. Let them sit about a minute or so, then power them back
on. I do the router first, let it stabilize, then the modem. Don't ask, it
just works. Good luck, have fun, and HNY to all.

What an EXTRAORDINARILY BAD policy by Elecraft to withdraw the manual for
the KFL1-4 from download simply because it is no longer sold! It appears
that Elecraft considers that the installed customer base vanishes when
Elecraft decides to drop a product.

It is very disappointing to learn of this gross failure of customer support.

This yields a resistance of 95mOhms which I consider ok.

Re: [Elecraft] [K1] Error27 - Alignment and Test Part 1

2014-12-23 Thread Richard S. Leary
Benny,
I just finished my basic K1, Serial Nr 3342, with the first filter board
(20m/15m). I'm amazed at how well it went. No missing parts. Every jack &
plug fits with laser precision. All resistance & voltage measurements fell
right on, or midrange between the manuals listed parameters. I'd go back and
recheck everything. Also make sure the small mini switch (oper/cal) on the
bottom of the RF board is in the "OPER" position. It makes a difference when
checking the U8 pin 1 and pin 8 voltages. All alignment procedures went as
stated in the manual. My VFO range is 80Khz and I ended up taking ONE turn
off of coil L1 to get it down to 3.095Khz. Actual range is 84Khz. Using my
SteppIR DB-18 ant my first contact was with a station in Spokane, WA on
20mtrs. Later my 2nd contact was with a station in New London, CT. An actual
QSO with names, rigs, etc. Lasted 17 minutes. Power = 3W. Now to start the
2nd filter board (17/30 meters).
Thank you Elecraft and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All.

Subject: [Elecraft] [K1] Error27 - Alignment and Test Part 1

Hi everybody,

I'm currently in the middle of building my K1 #3343.
Right until now everything went just fine and it's been fun to build.

I'm at the point of the first power up and wanted to test the ATTN relay.

The LED comes on but there ist no relay clicking.
When hitting BAND I realized that band change wasn't possible and the TRX
shows E27.

The filter board is completely plugged in and seated correctly.
Off to the manual then. Have you tried turning it off an on again: yes.
No relay clicking on power up. Until then i thought that was normal.

I checked the orientation of Fil-U1. Its positioned correct and completely
in the socket, no bent pins etc..
I checked the voltages of Fil-U1 everything within the specified range.
I checked some voltages at the MCU, not all yet, all within range or as
specified in the manual.

I read some older posts abt similar problems. I checked Fil-R1. It's the
correct value and the solder joint seems good.
I followed the hole path of the aux bus signal from Fil-U1 Pin13 up to the
MCU. Resistance is just the 100ohm of Fil-R1.
I redid some solder connections on the way even though they looked good, as
well as all solders on all multi pin connectors.
On the FP-Board FP-RFC1 is the correct value, solder joints looks ok. (It's
not a resistor)

Kept reading some older posts and checked the coil resistance of all relays,
all about the same resistance (not sure about the actual value right now) ,
soldering and position of all relays ok.

Right now i redid some voltage measurements.
I found out that the voltage at FIL-U1-16 is somewhat unstable. The first
time i measured it was well below 0.3V.
This time it was around 0.6 Volts, a couple seconds later around 1.3 V while
Pin 15 is at flat 0.0V as it was before.

Not sure what's that supposed to tell me. Did I fry Z1 while soldering? Or
is it U1 itself causing the trouble?

Any ideas are much appreciated!
Thanks in advance and happy holidays.

73 de DG5WJ - Benny

P.S. I sent the same message twice already but somehow they showed up in the
liste without any content.
So I switched Mail adresses. Sorry for the spam!

[Elecraft] Outstanding Service

2014-12-14 Thread Richard S. Leary
To Everyone at Elecraft,

First, Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year.

Elecraft, by far, has to have the greatest customer service anywhere.

Put in my order for a K1, 2 band kit, plus a 2nd 2 band board, and all the
extra sub-assemblies. Did that last Friday 12/12/14 morning at 0800 PDT.
With USPS priority mail, the box was on my doorstep this morning, Sunday
12/14/14. Is that fast enough, or what.

Getting ready for QRP. Already have the K3, P3, and KPA500. This weekend I
trained for QRP. Turned off the KPA500, took the K3 down to 5W, and have
made 150 contacts (S&P) so far. South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand,
to mention a few on 5W. Not too bad. But then the 5W is being fed to a
SteppIR DB-18, which helps.

Have to start working QRP I guess. At 78+ I just had a new aortic valve put
in, and am a candidate for an implanted Cardio defibulator. From what I have
seen, those units don't like a lot of high power RF around, and my rig is
only an arms length away. Anyone have any experience with Cardio stuff and
RF. Reply off reflector if you would please. I don't want to start another
chain reaction.

Now I have a decision to make. Do I go back to the 10 meter contest, or open
the Elecraft box. At 150 Q's, I'm thinking the box. Parts sorting is, to me
anyway, one of the fun things to building kits.

Thanks again Elecraft, New life and new radio. Can't get much better.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year again to All.

73,

Rick, W7LKG

Since Jan 2014, I've left my K3 and P3 on 24/7. The KPA500 I sometimes turn

I leave alone, so it's always on, except for total power outages. No

Re: [Elecraft] Computers in the Stone Age

2014-05-28 Thread Richard S. Leary
Gary,
How did you have 2 AN/FST-2's. Two actual separate machines, or one machine
with A & B channels, with the common power supply racks? Where was that
radar site? I had AN/FST-2B, S/N 0001, at 648th Radar Sq, Benton AFS, PA,
and I started working on it Apr 63. No test points, and plenty of "lights
out" cold tube filament checks.

I know this thread is going to get tossed soon, but I'll throw this one in,
possibly under the wire. In 1965, we had two AN/FST-2 computers at our

Re: [Elecraft] 756ProIII vs K3

2014-04-16 Thread Richard S. Leary
Right on Doug. I love my K-Line. Best rig I've ever had, and like you, until
the K4, I won't have another. Unless I add a KX3, or K1. Nothing like having
a rig you can tailor to your personal operating preferences. Thank you
Elecraft!! Now, I, for sure, would buy that new K3 transmit signal monitor
that would fit in my P3. Hint, Wayne...

In 1964 I had the same setup: HQ-170A, Eico 720 and a VFO. In those days,
the HQ-170 was like science fiction come true for me. It was wonderful
stuff. But, one day, I visited another ham who had just gotten a Drake 'B'
line. Don't remember what year it was. But I was very impressed. I think,
even today, the 'B' line would be a very usable pair of rigs. Because of
them, I owned a 'C' line for many years with every modification I could find
for them. Eventually, someone offered me a price that made me gasp. I
turned that money into a 756-Pro.

I too tend to "rent" rigs. I have a closet full right now. I doubt any of
them will see anymore desk time. I've proven to myself over and over that
the K3 is the real keeper. Until there's a K4, I doubt anything else will
ever be front and center on my desk.

Nostalgia trip. Built my Eico 720 in 62, but splurged with an HQ-170A rcvr.
After spending around 5 hours a day (average) for 6 1/2 years doing CW
intercept, spinning the knobs on an SP-600, Hammarlund seemed a good way to
go.
Still have a couple of 40 mtr xtals for the 720. The big jump was the VFO
for the 720. Went from the 720 to Heathkit SB-300/400, to Collins 75s3/32s3,
to Kenwood TS870S, then to presently the K3/100, KPA500, and P3 (all kits,
and no hardware/software failures, except those of the operator induced
kind.). I would have loved a K3 during my intercept days. Ever try changing
bands from 10m to say 40m or 80m on an R-390. Not my idea of "fun". Sounds

Actually, I am in the slow process of rebuilding an Eico 720 right now. I
am doing from scratch with all new parts except for the transformers,
switches and inductors. I am even putting new tube sockets in the chassis
and also new terminal strips. I am still in the process of collecting
everything before I start. I have two Eico 720s from which I am starting.
I think one of them was a factory built unit because a number of parts like
tube sockets and the modulator socket on the rear as well as the VFO switch
on the back were mounted with rivets rather than pan head screws and nuts.

It is a slow background project though. But, I do have some 40-meter
crystals all ready for when it is finished.

Shouldn't be a problem for you. I used to run phone patches from there back

where they will be on freq. From CA, not a problem. Check out

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 serial cable

2013-05-29 Thread Richard S. Leary
Howard,
Look on page 30 of your owners manual. The schematic for the cable is there.
My ops manual is Rev D.
I guess you could get a replacement from Elecraft. There is more cable
connector (power) info on Page 7 of the manual.

Funny you should post that request. I just finished doing a K3 calibrate
with the XG3, but I did find the DB9 to XG3 cable. My power cable is also
used for my MFJ-259B.

The serial cable that is shipped with the XG3 has managed to hide itself in
my cable jungle. It is clearly not the garden variety serial cable. Can
anyone describe it, diagram it or just tell me where I can replace it. I

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] KPA500 Stby flaw in V 1.23?

2013-01-31 Thread Richard S. Leary
Rick,

I am running KPA500, F/W Ver 1.23. Oper/Stby is working fine here. Have you
checked if KPA500 Menu item "Band Chg" is set to "STBY"?

In STBY either band changes on the K3 or KPA500 work fine, putting the 500
from OPER to STBY. If Band Chg is set to "NOR", the 500 stays in OPER with
either K3 or 500 band changes.

Good Luck

Hello all,

Today I upgraded the KPA500 from V 1.18 to V 1.23. I now note the following
problem: The amp does not go to standby on any band change. I went back to
1.18 to test this (it worked as described) and back to 1.23 (won't drop to
standby).

So I am currently on 1.18 again. Is anyone else seeing this problem?

Re: [Elecraft] With all the problems...

2012-11-14 Thread Richard S. Leary
Thom,
I've got K3/100 kit #4497, P3 kit #344, KPA500 kit #930. The K3 has been on
the air for over 2 years. I have not had a failure with any of the items.
Compared to other rigs I've used, I'll take the K3 over any of them, and
I've worked the lot, Icom, Kenwood, Heath, Yaesu, and Collins. I do mostly
CW, but RTTY is really fun with the K3. Just keep the firmware updated, and
have a blast. If you read the manuals, and watch the reflector you can't go
wrong. Putting the kits together are rather easy. And you cannot, repeat,
cannot, beat the Elecraft Support you can and will get if you need it. If
you could find someone with a K3, maybe they could let you "check it out".
I'm sure you will be impressed. I used my first one during Field day three
years ago and then just wanted one. Just an FYI from someone who's been
working CW for almost 60 years, and been a ham for 51 of those.

Rick, W7LKG

Got mine in June of this year (kit - 10W version). It went together as
smooth as butter and has been a blast to use.

So glad I took the plunge!

[Elecraft] [KPA500] OT

2012-07-05 Thread Richard S. Leary
To The Elecraft Team et al,

This is the time to order your KPA500. I did an on-line order late Sunday
evening, 24 June. It arrived 62 1/2 hours later, Wed, June 27.

The kit inventory was done (no missing parts), manuals read and understood.
The build went without any problems whatsoever and included

experience, carefullness, patience, and a lot of second time RTFM. It was
really a fun project.

It performs as expected. Absolutely NO anomalies.

My thanks to Elecraft, and I mention Wayne, Eric, and the parts packers
Edgar, Felicita, Fidel, and Stephanie. You folks do an excellent job. Again,
my thanks to the entire Elecraft team.

The KPA500 #930 now joins K3 #4497, and P3 #433, along with a SteppIR DB-18
antenna @ 50'. Never had an "S" line, but I do now have a "K-Line".

Oh yes, The KPA500's first two contacts were 1A0C on 20m CW & SSB.

Again, many thanks es 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Slow Speed CW With My K3

2012-05-16 Thread Richard S. Leary
Joel;
As Carey stated, NAQCC, and W1AW are good places to check out. Then listen to
the "rhythm". I believe thats very important. As taught to me back in the 50's
at USAF radio school, "F" is di di dah dit or "Get a haircut", "J" was "the
damnd ol jay" di dah dah dah, and "Q" was "pay day today". Just sound it out
with rhythm and it sorta works. Been doing CW for over 57 years, and I guess
I've heard it all, good, bad, and otherwise, though my sending could use some
improvement.
I wish you all the best in your endeavours. You won't regret it one bit. There
are folks out there that will not mind at all to slow down to your speed. Our
basic "orders" (USAF) and rule of thumb was to "Always send at the speed of the
slowest operator on the net. Just plain courtesy.

Take care and see you on the air one of these days.

Rick, W7LKG

Hi Joel:

The NAQCC (North American QRP CW Club) runs a bunch of QRS nets. Here is a
link to their website and schedules for these nets.
http://naqcc.info/cw_nets.html

I had problems with 'L' and 'F' too. I just remembered the sound.
di-di-dah-dit, F. Went over it a bazillion times in my head, over and over
again. It finally stuck.

Good luck with the code. It is great.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kenwood's new rig?

2012-05-09 Thread Richard S. Leary
Fred,
After looking at the back cover of QST, I don't see many, if any buttons or
controls, that are not already included on the K3 either as physical front
panel controls, or menu selections. Other than the 200W output, I'll just
keep my K3, and add the KPA500. Way too many buttons on the TS-990S. And I
did replace my TS-870 with the K3(K)/100 just over 18 months ago.
I chuckled on the INT QKK. Here it's INT QKK = 46, QKK = 46. (K3K/100,
P3K(minus the VGA board). I really do RTFM!
I also sense, with you using the "INT", that you may have once been a radio
op, say 293x1 or 292x1, USAFSS or AACS.
Just made me curious.
In 67/68 we used to make our PX HiFi runs to the Naval Comm Stn PX on Guam,
or Yokota AB, from Wake Island. (Ex KW6GB).

Have fun and maybe see you in the CAQSOP, or CW Sweepstakes. Have not worked
you since CWSS 2005.

In the late 60's, the Exchange at Clark AB in the Philippines carried quite
a bit of Japanese stereo gear. We called it "Tokyo By Night,"
because the front panels resembled the Ginza. That sort of faded.
Possibly it's being reincarnated in ham gear.

INT QKK: "How many knobs[or controls] does your radio have?"
QKK 50: "My radio has 50 knobs [or controls]."

INT QKU: "How many of those do you know how to use?"
QKU 4: "I know how to use 4 of them."

[Elecraft] P3 F/W 1.11 Ref Lvl Issue

2012-03-15 Thread Richard S. Leary
FYI;

Downloaded new F/W 1.12 for the P3. Set the Ref Lvl on three bands. All
remained as set with subsequent band changes. Works good.

Where else but Elecraft would you have a "minor" glitch fixed in say less
than 2 days. Pretty outstanding I'd say. Just keep up the great work. Which
is pretty amazing considering the fact that Elecraft people who do this are
spread out across the country, and overseas, if you include the "testers".
Impressive.

Got to "touch" a KX3 at the Mike and Key Hamfair at Puyallup, WA last
Saturday. Dick, AC7MA had it on display. A lot of good stuff in a small
package. Two problems; keyer was for right handers, and it was a bit smudged
all over (due to the many many fingerprints all over it from folks who were
inconsiderate enough not to wash their hands before touching it. Shame.). I
need a KPA500 first.

OK, I know, enough. I'm back to bed.

Thanks Again for the Excellent service,

[Elecraft] FW: P3 Windows Utility Program 1.12.3.11

2012-03-12 Thread Richard S. Leary
Works fine here also. Loaded K3 F/W Beta 4.48, then P3 Utility 1.12.3.11,
then used it to upgrade P3 F/W to Ver 1.11. Did screen capture, OK. But I
still do not have a P3SVGA on order yet. No problems with downloads, but I
make sure to run a serial cable directly from the PC to the K3, download
F/W, then switch the cable from the K3 to the P3 and download F/W again.
Nothing in between the equipment and the PC. Do not put a microKEYER in
between, it doesn't work. Been there, done that. Just ask Joe. Oh yes,
running Win 7/64bit.

Thanks Elecraft for a K3/100K and P3 that have NEVER failed in almost 2
years. Good "ears", good power, good knobs. I love 'em.

This past weekend I loaded the 1.11 firmware onto my P3
and today I installed the 1.12.3.11 utility program on
my Windows XP SP3 machine.

When capturing an image, the File->Save As only
stays highlighted for a brief time and using it
looks like it should be saving a file when clicking
OK to the file window that pops-up with the File->Save As,
but no file is saved.

This worked correctly with the previous version of this utility.

Is anyone else having this problem??

Re: [Elecraft] The Old RST

2012-02-20 Thread Richard S. Leary
To Me the use of QSA(1-5) was for signal strength only. If the other
operator had a bad fist then we used QRK(1-5). QRK was his "readability".
Then we also used INT QSA and INT QRK instead of QSA IMI(?) or QRK IMI
(ditty-dum dum-ditty, as we used to say). You could tell the good guys from
the other guys, as we used INT vs IMI.
And for transmitter sounds, we also used to identify many other "targets"
just by how the xmitters sounded and how they operated. Some were very
distinctive. This is from the late 50's, early 60's. How many ex-CW morse
intercept operators out there? Hi There.
As for RST reports. In contesting I'll probably go with the 599. But if you
get me in a casual QSO I'll give you an "honest" report for sure, wether it
makes you feel bad or not. I know I've gotten a lot of other than 599
reports and then consider why I got it, either "me bad", propagation,
equipment, power, or whatever. Closest real RST reports I've had lately were
during the monthly NAQCC sprints. Lots of 559 @ 5W.

Just my FWIW...K3/100K #4497, P3 #344, KPA500 (#??? soon)

I have recently heard some T7 or T8 signals on the air as well as a 579C.
Yes, it's rare, thankfully, but no reason to give up the ability to report.
