Hello all, I wish to thank the few ops who responded to my initial request for help in getting my K3S to key. Unfortunately, I still have had no luck in curing my problem. Since I can’t seem to get any locals in nj to help, I am hoping someone out there who has a program like Team Viewer would be willing to invest a small amount of time in helping me get squared away. Re: [Elecraft] Gurus
Anyone condemning other hams for using "dirty transmitters" is simply out of line. The ordinary ham is NOT an Electrical Engineer and he buys his rig in good faith, believing it passed FCC and other engineering standards. He uses it in good faith, assuming it is OK and not causing problems. But then, a few self-appointed Frequency Cops condemn the poor operator as a bad citizen for using a "dirty transmitter" as if the operator is somehow to blame. I have worked a lot of contests with crowded conditions in a large metropolitan area, and nobody has ever whined about any of this, notwithstanding a couple of self-appointed experts living in the mountains of CA and CO claim it is a horrible epidemic. Besides, if this was such big problem why is it such a new, current topic? Supposedly, all those old rigs have been noisy all the time. I suspect it is topical only because they have nothing else to talk about. Well, even if it is a problem, there is no place for this sort of personal attack in ham radio, AND IT IS SIMPLY WRONG TO BLAME THE OPERATOR for how his rig works. For most ops, ham radio is just a hobby and they are entitled to expect their radios will work right. Blaming the operator is simply out of line. Re: [Elecraft] Giving Up
Mr. Brown and a few others repeatedly claim Yaesu rigs cause all sorts of noise, yet fail to substantiate or provide serious proof beyond quoting Rob Sherwood NC0B who,. purportedly, has a neighbor with a noisy FT3000, and mentioning early FT1000s which Yaesu eventually fixed along the way. Mr. Brown accumulated graphs published by the ARRL Lab, which are interesting, yet fail to prove the point - mostly, I am told, because the problem involves a DIFFERENT TYPE of noise, which ARRL Lab Chief Allison told me was not being measured, although it had plans to do so in the future. Thus, these claims are essentially anecdotal hearsay with several ops merely repeating what others have said. Without serious technical substantiation, these claims are somewhat reckless with undue chilling effect on owning and using Yaesu and other brand radios, as if Elecraft is all good and without fault. I was truly impressed and caught off guard when Mr. Wayne at Elecraft admitted its transmitters are using old-school technology and could stand much improvement, along with the rest of the crowd - a frankly humble and forthright statement which earned my respect. I live in a fairly large metropolitan area with a lot of other hams, and no one is complaining about noisy transmitters from any brand. This seems to be an obsession of a very few hams who enjoy mounting the soap box. I wish everyone would be as careful and as measured expressing their take. as Mr. Wayne. [Elecraft] K3 on motorboat
As with most everything on a boat, antenna and counterpoise systems are a compromise. You have to work with what you have. I agree that an elevated feedpoint is not the best, but on a fishing trawler support rigging for the outriggers moves up and down. With the antenna mounted on the mast it is out of harm's way( except for lighting ). There are all kinds of scenarios on work boats that have to be taken into account when installing a system and there will be compromises. Commercial and most other users don't have the luxury as, Hams do, to experiment and tweak systems. They just want the system to work. There are accepted practices that are proven to work well and if followed they will perform. I think that if you visit a yacht basin or commercial boat dock that you will see that the vertical is the antenna of choice unless the craft is large enough to support a longwire but will probably also have a vertical. Vertical antennas built for marine use,if properly installed on a yacht will look just fine and be no more distracting than radar, nav system, TV or Sat phone antennas. It's been a pleasure conversing with everyone, but I have to bow out. I have to travel and won't have internet for a while so I will say 73's to all. Please stay safe and be not afraid. [Elecraft] K3 0n motorboat
I used the wrong terminology when I was speaking about antenna system grounding on a boat. What I actually meant was a counterpoise system. I agree that a vertical dipole works well but would be difficult to install permanently on a small boat. A vertical is most often used with a tuner. There are standard mounts and they are pretty easy to install and are sturdy and well suited for marine use. I also agree that all structures should be bonded to the counterpoise system. Some of the boat builders(Hatteras ,Bertram .etc) would put copper screen into the fiberglass layups of the flying bridge decks and roofs with a stud connected to it so that it could be tied into the system. On commercial trawlers the antenna would be mounted on the mast about 30 or 35 ft above the water. It was fed with a wire about 25 or 30 ft long so it was actually a 55 or 60 ft end-fed. With the outriggers lowered and acting as radials, the trawl doors and cables in the water and everything else bonded together, it is a pretty good counterpoise system. 73, Frank KB4VU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 on motorboat.
Having been in the marine electronics business I was able to successfully install many HF radios on boats from large steel commercial fishing boats to a small 28 ft fiberglass fishing boat and sailboats. Anything metal , engine, fuel tanks, rudder posts, thru hulls, morse control cables, intercoolers outside of the hull, rub rail sections jumpered together to form one continuous loop. Dynaplates help but will not work well as the only source of ground. I once saw a carbon brush riding thru spring tension on a prop shaft, tying the prop to ground. It can be tricky as sometimes you get ground loops and you must be aware of currents that can cause electrolysis. For the antenna we primarily used a 23 ft whip, sometimes on large vessels a longwire. This was before synthesized radios and autouners. My favorite radio was the Drake TRM which had a built in manual tuner and a 50 ohm output if you wanted to use a trapped vertical. On commercial fishing boats you had to leave the dock so that the outriggers could be lowered and trawl doors put in the water as this changed the tuning quite a bit from being at the dock. Interestingly enough I think the toughest time I had tuning was on an 85 ft steel shrimp boat even with all that metal. . __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Someone said: "Now, i am flummoxed with a burning fascination as to how i can obtain one ofthese K4 Dream Machines." Um...ahem ...why not...um... get an EASY, part time job and...er...earn extra money for a new rig, fresh coax cable, and a few more bucks to buy better bourbon to sip while relaxing after that next big contest? I know a guy who worked at a big box store to pay for health insurance and other goodies, and really respect him for it. I occasionally assume an odd professional assignment to finance new gear. You might also sell stuff you do not really need around the house, instead of leaving it to your heirs to sort out after you are reassigned to a station in the clouds? You would be surprised how much green you can recover. I sold enough junk last year to finance a new guitar. My wife fully supports any purchase I make with new money outside the investment pool. A new transceiver may be within reach after all - plus you will have that heady sense of self satisfaction the comes from a job well done without dipping into your financial reserves. Work only as much as necessary - I am certainly NOT advocating against retirement! Besides, you may enjoy getting out of the house and mixing with people, and the extra cash should be fun to spend. Besides, why do you think the K3S will lose ANY value with the introduction of a K4 model? The introduction of a new model does nothing to diminish the performance or value of an existing model, so the K3S should retain its current value after the introduction of a future K4 - it will do what it does for the price regardless of what new rig comes out. Re: [Elecraft] Of words and such
It appears some members would excuse an obvious mistake, because they concur with what they believe is intended to be a compliment. But how do we know for sure what the writer intended to convey? After all, his words are, in fact, a slur. Words, in general, often often have very specific meanings, as do many technical words in engineering and scientific prose. For some professions, e.g., novelists, lawyers, and advocates of all stripes, words are the very tools of the trade. On this reflector, members frequently criticize others for misusing technical words when speaking about radios, yet they would excuse a serious error in other contexts, because they agree with the presumed sentiment. Kudos to the critic who gently, and politely asked whether the writer truly intended the opposite of what he likely intended to say. Shame on those who would misuse some words, while admonishing the misuse of technical words. You can rationalize as you like - fact is, the original post is a slur, and we should not criticize the critic - who is, in fact, correct ! Just MY take. [Elecraft] Elecraft's philosophy of community input on, product design
Yes, you HAVE succeeded using a difficult and unique business model that accommodates and fulfills the experimental and developmental aspects of ham radio. Think about it ... to buy an Elecraft radio, especially in the very early days, is to buy an essentially unfinished work-in-progress undergoing constant development, against the promise that bugs, foibles and peccadilloes will be cured with future firmware, and occasionally hardware, updates. This realizes a major legal purpose of ham radio: the advancement of radio science. Elecraft owners are more than mere consumers; they are an integral part of the process. While this is not my style, it appeals to a large number of operators willing to experiment and participate in product development, serving as so many ersatz field test sites. Had performance lagged, or had Elecraft failed to deliver promised features and improved performance, the company would have been relegated to ham radio history long ago. Personal accountability and accessibility while looking the customer directly in the eye is a significant factor in its success. Selling both a process and a product is a bold, risky course. Fortunately, Elecraft has delivered the goods well enough, and often enough, to earn its place in the race. That is just MY take, of course ... your mileage may vary. Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4?
Mr. Eric, perhaps you are fishing in the wrong pond ... To coin a phrase: Ask not why some hams buy your radios - ask why all the others do not. Asking members of this group who are pleased with your products is misplaced. Instead, you should poll those who recently purchased, or who contemplate purchasing, competing products. More hams purchase competing products than buy Elecraft gear, so you should ask THEM why. Disregard sycophantic owners who claim you make the only rig worth owning (even if that is true!) Disregard those who claim other manufacturers have lost touch with their customers, because that is simply not true. Many well informed, qualified hams buy other brands for good reasons. In any case, you should determine what induced them to eschew your products for theirs. Contrary to popular belief, owning Brand X is not a sign of insanity! Contest guru K3LR has brand X radios in his big contest shack. World famous Rob Sherwood NC0B has four of the latest Brand X radios and the latest Brand Y radio on his desk. And they are pretty smart guys. To increase market share, you must produce products that appeal to more buyers with money to spend. (I learned this is Business 101.) ;-) That is just MY take ... you make the call. Re: [Elecraft] Sorta OT - assistive technology assistance
THANK YOU for the several replies to my mixer circuit question - both on and off the list. Unfortunately, few actually answered the original question, most often advising me to abandon the project or mix on a computer sound card. First - Thanks, Steve, for your input based on personal experience. While I am familiar with your mixer, Tom prefers a device with stereo channels and outputs for both headphones and powered speakers. The model under consideration has only two control pots, making it easier to manage. Tom truly appreciates your personal input and direct correspondence off list. He puts a lot of stock in your take. Second - Tom prefers a simple hardware solution. Locating a manual control next to the rig is much easier (for him) to manage, than mixing with a computer sound card. Navigating multiple operating system windows is a serious challenge because he cannot see the monitor or use a mouse. This is not the preferred method for a contest or snagging rare DX before a pileup ensues. Mixing on a computer would be very inconvenient; close your eyes and try it some day! It's easy for you to say ... but, not so easy for my friend to do. Third - We can simply purchase a commercial product (I recommend the Rolls MINImix MS22s stereo mixer, with just two pots, and outputs for both headphones and speakers) UNFORTUNATELY, THAT DEFEATS THE WHOLE POINT BEHIND MY QUESTION. While I do NOT wish to look a gift horse in the chops, or appear ungrateful for the advice received so far; money is not the object as I want to LEARN how this type of circuit works, and do a favor for a friend, in one stroke. Advising me to save money and just buy a turn-key, off-the-shelf solution hardly fits the HAM RADIO TRADITION of experimentation and self-determination, and teaches me nothing about circuit design. I was hoping to build something MYSELF- earning that heady sense of self-satisfaction that accompanies the completion of a successful home brew project. Considering all the experts on this list, including world class board certified AES audio man Jim Brown, I figured a simple summing circuit would be a snap. I close this thread with a big THANK YOU on behalf of my ... um ... "client," whilst I repair to the proverbial drawing board to renew my search for a simple summing circuit. Happy trails to all. [Elecraft] Sorta OT - assistive technology assistance needed
Good Day. Background: I am assisting a blind ham who also suffers some hearing loss. I suggested using headphones to attenuate ambient environmental noise as he operates. The rub is, he needs to hear both his receiver AND his computer (which provides audible feedback when logging contacts and performing other duties.) Question: Can anyone suggest a simple passive (or active) mixer circuit schema I can build for him to safely mix audio signals from his transceiver headphone jack with audio signals from his computer sound card headphone jack? Discussion: While there are multiple commercially produced simple and complex mixing products in the marketplace, I would prefer to build an inexpensive, small footprint solution we can easily incorporate in his station to minimize clutter and the number of cables, jacks, and controls -- he contends with plenty of that already. I suppose one solution might be a simple Y-adapter cable, but that seems too easy and I wonder whether we should isolate the signals and/or grounds in some way? (e.g., I do not wish to cause any "Pin-1" grounding issues, and etc.) Any traction? Can anyone point me to an appropriate circuit schematic or other resource? I don 't mind doing homework, and while I enjoy building stuff and I am familiar with the basic concepts involved, I could use a leg up on this project, especially to keep it simple and easy to build and implement. Please reply off list if this question is too far off topic, although I suspect there are many hams who might be interested in the result, besides similarly situated disabled operators. I happen to KNOW how NF8J does it. As suggested by another member, here is the recipe 1) a pound of good equipment; 2) a dash of cunning; 3) a large dose of patience; 4) substantial experience and knowledge how it it all works; and 5) THE ABILITY TO LISTEN - probably the most important ingredient. Paul has taught me a few things about operating, including the importance of LISTENING and CATCHING ON to the rhythm and flow, and knowing when and how to react - that includes how and when to pound the key or press the button and speak. Looking for Don's answers in this list is, to me, the equivalent of looking something up in a reference book. Don is such a great asset to us all. By the way Philip, I have heard of people using RE20's with their rigs, but have never come across anyone who uses an RE27 with theirs which I assume would be easier, due to the higher output of the RE27. I connected mine directly to my K2 and it sounds fine. Predictably, it has a bit more at the bottom end than the electret mic in the Heil Traveler headset I was using. I don't think I would have purchased an RE27 specifically for ham use, but as I already had it here, it seemed a shame not to press it into service. So finally, I know another ham who uses an RE27 N/D! Dave AA7EE >Every day I see Don helping other Elecraft hams. Don set about constructing a small case with a 6 >FT cord that goes to the KX3 and on the other side is a male mike connector >for the desk mike. It's beautiful and solved my need. Charged me a very >reasonable amount and I paid with a big smile. [Elecraft] Metal Film Resistors In K2?
I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger on a K2 and I have a question that I hope Wayne or Eric will give their thoughts on. I know that the K2 is known for it's low-noise receiver but I'm wondering whether substituting metal film resistors for the carbon film ones that come with the kit would reduce the noise even more? I'm thinking that it certaily can't hurt - that there could only be an upside. I did perform a search before asking this question to see whether anyone else has asked, but didn't find anything. [Elecraft] Kt-2 kit wanted
I am considering putting a K2 kit together. Perhaps there is someone who, after opening the box and looking at the manual and parts, decided NOT to take on the "challenge". For those who remember the old Heathkit name, I assembled a number of their kits in the past so the K2 seems a good way to keep this "retiree" busy. I do NOT want to take on a "partially" assembled K2; if your kit is basically an "unopened" package of current vintage I would appreciate knowing the serial number, what "options" are included, and your "price".
