Mine is well within the 1/2 watt at 5 watts as stated in the specifications.

Measuring RF power at QRP levels is really not difficult. A low
forward-voltage drop diode from the 'hot' side of the RF line to a capacitor
that goes to ground will give you an accurate peak RF voltage across the
cap. Measure that with a high-impedance meter like most DMMs today. RMS
value is .707 times that reading. To get the power, multiply the RMS voltage
times itself (square it) and divide the result by the resistance: 50 ohms.

 my $.02
Now! Someone pointed out to me several weeks ago that using the
Elecraft DL1 (dummy load)
with a DDM and a calculator ( the formula on the assembly sheet) works
very well and is accurate.

[Elecraft] intimidated

2005-03-24 Thread Robert Conley
Several times over the last couple of months during the building of
first my K1 (#1949) and then my KX1 ( #1056). I was intimidated by the
instructions in the manuals. First with the K1 and KAT1 that I finally
got the nerve to finish and install it today. The KX1 did a number on
me too when I read the manuals from a PDF down load before ordering. I
finally took the plunge and ordered it, built it in less than twenty
hours, then ordered the 30m mod. built and installed it earlier this
week before I tackled installing the KAT1 today. The manuals for both
radios are so beautifully written that construction of the K1 KX1 is
extremely easy. Wayne and Eric along with everyone at Elecraft are to
be commended on a job very well done. I look forward to building a K2

What a gas.Now while I had the case open I compressed the coils of L2
as recommended other Elecrafters I again used my Elecraft XG1 for final
receiver tweaking and the Elecraft DL1 and DMM to measure the out put
power. 20m checked in this time with 7.02 vrms (2.08 watts)and 30m with
8.91 vrms (3.25 watts) and 40m with 8.75 vrms (3.14 watts). Good enough.

[Elecraft] a K2 thought?

2005-03-21 Thread Robert Conley
In reviewing the K2 manual prior to ordering/building I have noticed
that there are several
instructions to install a 'GROUP' of components then solder and trim the
leads. Wouldn't
this lead to missed solder connections or cause a less than perfect
soldered joint. I should
think like 'THE TURTLE ' in that slow and steady (one at a time) will
get you there with a lot less chance of an error in assembly.

[Elecraft] re: cw

2005-03-08 Thread Robert Conley
I am some what embarrassed to say this but the fastest CW speed I ever
attained was 13wpm in 1980 when I passed my General exams. I worked
three years to obtain this speed. I passed my Advanced exam later that
year. My abilities suffered from lack of use because of pressing family
matters in the 80's. The love of CW was still there and that MUSIC was
always heard in my shack. Two strokes in the early 90's pretty much
destroyed my ability to copy all but the SLOWEST fists (I wish and
dream for 30wpm ability )along with hand copying. With the aid of
hemostats and locking tweezers I build my rigs slowly. A K1 and a
Multipig+ among them and soon a KX1 as it is on the way now. The CW
music is still heard in my shack. Some times when I get the NERVE UP I
send a CQ even at my slow speed and my old J-44 key as I enjoy the
MUSIC of CW. After all I AM A HAM. FWIW I no longer own
commercially built equipment. I've built it all my self from kits or
UGLY construction. Building while CW MUSIC emits from a rig I built
is the penultimate pleasure. MY $0.02 worth.

[Elecraft] kx1 antennas

2005-03-05 Thread Robert Conley
Thinking begets trouble. While reading the KXAT1 manual. Pages 9 10
show a random length wire antenna system using a POMONA 1296 BNC to
Dual Binding post adapter (mouser #565-1296 $11.83 or jameco #99354
$5.29). To my way of thinking ( here comes the trouble) 3 resonate wires
mated on 3 banana plugs will eliminate the need for the KXAT1. Wire #1
33' 1/4 wave resonate on 40m used as vertical. Wire #2 1/8 wave of 16.5'
used radial for 40m or vertical
element for 20m. Wire #3 a 1/8 wave length 8.5' radial for 20m. If you
also have 30m you would need a forth wire of 23' 1/4 wave section used
as a vertical element and a fifth wire of 11.5' used as an 1/8 wave
length radial. These will all fit in a sandwich bag. You would now have
a complete resonate antenna system for the KX1 See now I'm in trouble
again for thinking [g].

RC,

That would be great if you could get it to work - but it won't (at least not

something to work against to complete the antenna system, and RF being the
'funny' thing that it is will always find a path, but that may be a very
high loss path unless one takes precautions to make it otherwise.

You may be able to get it a little cheaper at Mouser but I ordered
mine at the same time I ordered my Hakko 936.

K2/100 with all the goodies arrives Wednesday.

Good Luck.

Mouser sells the BK 2707A for $89. Why not the BK 2704B for $59 if
you need a DMM

GE Mychael,
I just wanted to say thanks for the excellent job that you did on my
toroids. It probably cut my built time by at least 40%. I have some
residual stroke damage ( fine motor control ) in my left hand and
winding toroids is a challenge to say the least, but I do so enjoy
building my own. K1 #1949 is finished but now I need to find the
problem of No Power Out I built an RF probe inside an in-line fuse
holder and I have an O'scope so the difficulty will be discovered and
corrected with help from others on the reflector. Thanks again!

2004-12-16 Thread Robert Conley
What a super little receiver. I ordered one when I saw the reference on
the list 4-5 days ago. Its already here and what a great little General
coverage radio it is. Very glad I saw it come across

[Elecraft] toroids-kt5x

2004-12-04 Thread Robert Conley

Thanks Fred for this is a marvelous idea on toroid winding. It will also be of
great assistance to someone like myself with limited dexterity in my left hand
as it sounds like this method will work quite nicely. This will be filed away
for future reference. Thanks.

---

Toroid winding. VERY easy. I took a small wooden dowel and sharpened it, not
all the way, with a pencil sharpener making it into a cone but no sharp point.
You could use a pencil and not sharpen it to a point. I cut a small groove the
length of it. This I support vertically in a vise clamped to my desk.

The toroid goes over the dowel. The wire is threaded down the groove. The
dowel holds the toroid, allows one to easily pull the windings tight, in fact
you can pull it too tight (too tight is when you break the toroid), pressing
the toroid down on the dowel squeezes the windings tight against the toroid on
the inside, too. Between putting on a winding, it is hands free, the dowel
holds the toroid, wires tight, everything. It is very easy to manipulate the
windings to make them machine-like evenly distributed around the core when the
core is over the dowel.

[Elecraft] monday

2004-12-03 Thread Robert Conley
I can hardly wait. My K1-2 (80/40) will be here Monday. I've built
several smaller kits like the Rock mite etc. Nothing of this magnatude
though. I ordered it Friday after Thanksgiving and it seems like I.ve
been waiting forever for it to arrive. Meanwhile hoping to pick up
building hints I've monitored this reflector. I've never used the side
of a cardboard box but instead a 12 x 12 sheet of styrofoam from the
craft store to hold the parts and DVM to check EVERY resistor and
VARIABLE TONE TESTER to check capacitors before mounting them on the
pcb. This looks like the place to be should I have QUESTIONS or need a
good sharp kick in the motivator [g]. 72/71 de RC kc5wa

[Elecraft] THANKS

2004-12-03 Thread Robert Conley

Thanks to everyone. Don (KD5NDB), Don (W3FPR) Bob (W7AVK),  Mark (AD5SS);
The styrofoam has been put in the trash (not recycle ) bin. I lot of
good ideas have come my way this morning and I appreciate them all. When
building an SW+30 SW+40 I learned about marking the schematic and or the
parts placement diagram with color markers. This from Dave Benson
K1SWL I must go slow as I do not have full use of my left hand from
residual stroke damage. I do enjoy building and try to learn from every
project I tackle. If you wish to look at my web page it is at
http://www.kc5wa-rc.com. again thanks to all. rc kc5wa
