Hi
I agree that those devices were good. I have an emu 0404. They will indeed
continue to use the old beta driver.

Subject: [Elecraft] Creative Lab EMU-0202

I just re-installed my EMU-0202 sound card. I wanted to see if I could
make it play with Windows 10 and everything else I have running, Win4K3,
CW Skimmer, and HRD. I've always liked the fact that there was less
"garbage" being displayed on the spectrum display. What I found it that
Windows 10 picked it right up and it seems to be playing nicely. It's
not clear what driver I'm using as I put a beta Windows 7 driver in when
this machine had Windows 7. If the Windows 10 install kept my beta
driver than I suspect it is that one that is being used. In any case, my
old card works which means a $70 card will work vice a $140 card. And
since my EMU-0202 is not in current production, a card may be had at
even a lessor price than $70.

[Elecraft] KXPD3 long screw...

2016-05-20 Thread Tom Crayner
I found a good pair of side-cutters with a quick filing and I can't tell
the difference between the two screws under a magnifying glass, just stay
clear of the threads so you don't damage them. (wear your safety glasses
 :-) )

I took the screw out of the keyer to avoid damaging it while performing
this alteration.

YMMV, but you can always order the screw if you have an epic fail.

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite now offers full integration of the KX3 with the KAT500 and KPA500

2016-04-29 Thread Tom
Hello,
The latest release of Win4K3Suite now provides full integration of the KAT500
and / or the KPA500 with the Elecraft KX3 / KXPA100.
The integration passes band and frequency information from the KX3 to the
KAT500 and KPA500 allowing seamless recalls of previous tuning parameters. You
can toggle the display of the KXPA100 with the KPA500 as needed. In addition,
there is now a visible indication of faults in the KAT500 and KPA500 allowing
you to reset them remotely if you wish. You will effectively be able to use
the combination as if you had the full K-Line. This feature will require the
latest beta KAT500 release (1.75 or later).
Win4K3Suite is a comprehensive control package for the Elecraft product line
supporting all options including the P3 / SVGA as well as LPPAN. It integrates
with all third party products including HRD LogBook and DXCommander.
You can see it in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htVlc9x0IoU

Ditto we still don't use them.
Our users have a choice of laptop or iPad/Surface other than a desktop thin
client on our VM Ware network.
90% choose the Win7 laptop. They're more expensive, slower, and break more
often than the thin client but not as often as the iPads. The Surface's are new
so no experience base with them yet. Our hardware group absolutely hate touch
screens. I'm a Network Engineer...I have no use for them either.

My brother does IT for a school district that equipped all of their middle
school kids with cutting edge iPads. 700 of them. My brother had to get good at
replacing the very expensive coated touch screens that the evil empire said
mere mortals couldn't replace. He got no help from Apple other than expensive
parts. That experiment lasted three years and they switched to Chrome books.

I guarantee as sure as I'm sitting here *that touch screen will fail within a
year...if not sooner*, and you've got no chance to fix it yourself. I can order
parts from Elecraft for all my rigs and fix them.
No sweat.

I'm curious why is direct sampling SDR's like the 7300 are supposed to be the second
coming why Icom stuck with the traditional superhet architecture on it's
"flagship" 7851? Maybe they realize the technology is at least 5 years away
from being competitive. Everybody is ignoring W4TV's 800lb Gorilla, ADC overload.

[Elecraft] KX3 / KXPA per band power?

2016-04-25 Thread Tom
Hi,
Is there an option somewhere to enable the KX3 to have different power levels
per band? This would be very useful if you are driving a big amp via the
KXPA100.
Is this planned for a future firmware update?
Thanks, Tom

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA Power Output

2016-04-16 Thread Tom Field
Thanks for the replies.
I have gone through the procedure again.
I used the calibration procedure outlined on the Elecraft Website.

Some observations. With no load I have 14.63 volts coming into the KXPA
100.
With the radio and amplifier on and resting, the current is approx 0.3 Amps

Steps
Set the radio in the 160 meter band
Set P Cal
Closed the menu
Set Pwr to CAL 75
Confirmed the KXPA 100 Is in bypass
Pressed Tune( I assume this is the button that says transmit)
Current rose to .9 Amps
If I took the pressure off the button, the current stayed up until I
pressed it again
The display showed 2 numbers On top 1.1 Below 5.0
Pressed the button again
Normal Display returned
Moved on to 80 meter band
Same behaviour and findings
Moved to 60 meter band
Same
40 meters, 30 meters, 20 meters same with approximately same current
17 meters, Current went up to 1.21 Amps
15 meters 1.24 Amps
12 meters 1.45 Amps
10 meters 1.45 Amps
6 meters
Display showed 3 instead of 5 and 1.68 amps

Opened the menue and turned the PA to on

Set the PA back to auto

set power at 75 Watts
Using the KXPA Utility
Input Power Forward Power
160 m 0.848
80 m 1.050
60 m 1.252
40 m 1.251.4
30 m 1.156.8
20 m 1.659.2
17 m 1.682
15 m 1.251
12 m 1.049.5
10 m 1.250.3
6 m 2.060.6

The only band that came close was 17 meters. I wonder if there is something
about the calibration process. Accd to the notes from the Elecraft website
"Press TUNE. The KX3 will transmit for a short while then stop. During this
transmission, the KX3 and KXPA100 will determine what drive level is needed
to get to 75 watts"

I found if I pushed and held TUNE, it started transmitting and did not stop
transmitting until I let off and pushed it again.

Advice, suggestions welcome.

[Elecraft] KXPA Power Output

2016-04-16 Thread Tom Field
I'm having difficulty getting more than about 70 to 80 watts out of the
KXPA 100. I have it connected to a KX3 with the Elecraft cable and have
gone through the calibration procedure as outlined in the owners manual and
in Fred Cady's excellent book.

For Example if I go through the calibration procedure on 40 meters,
It appears to show a drive level of 5 watts to achieve 75 watt output.
If I transmit into a dummy load, with the power setting at 100 watts,
I have a drive power of about 2.6 watts and an output power of about 70
watts as shown in the KXPA Utility.

Am I missing something?

[Elecraft] Strange K3's issues

2016-04-10 Thread Tom SQ5CSF
Hello everybody,
I have a strange issues in my K3. Maybe someone has had similar symptoms and
may help me...

chronology of my actions with K3

- from the begining K3 was never opened, worked fine.
- 2015-06 - KXV3 installation
- 144 QSO made in this period time - no issues.
- 2015-12-31 Last firmware upgrade (5.38/1.25/2.86)
- 26 QSO made in this period time - in January - no issues
- SPDX contest (2016-04-02)- in my contest location - first operational
problems.
During the contest I have made about 40 qso.
Many radio restart have been made to be able to work at all...
symptoms: when I have pressed mic's PTT, TX led switch ON but there were no
power output.
The same situation was when I have used footswitch or playback message option.
After few pressing of the PTT output power appeared.

Next point was the AUT - time of the tuning was tottaly differen between next
tunes.
Next point - AF gain controls for main receiver.
Radio was not reading the knob position to change the volume.
Band change removed this issue for some time.

- Home station - 2016-04-10
Previous problems disappear, now i have a problem with the K3 power off.
It's look like not complete internal procedure.
whole firmwares were reloaded - issues still exist.
configuration was restored from 2015-08 - issues still exist.
Older firmwares were downloaded - issues still exist.
Actual firmwares were downloaded with last saved configuration - issues still
exist.
- next point - when I switch on my Diamond power supply - K3 power on
automatically.

Some shots made by mobile You can have a look on vimeo:

I will be grateful for any comments / tips

I had read a while back that it was around ~2.1A at 10W. Looking at tiny

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Re: Strong recommendation: MFJ 18xx-series single-band whips for KX3, etc.

2016-03-24 Thread Tom Crayner
John,

Just like Bruce said regarding the 1899...

I started at one tap position for 20M and then changed the coil tap to
another for 40M. When I wrote my original note that was my 40M testing... I
failed to mention in my earlier email. In this case the whip length itself
isn't adjusted, just the tap, and I guess to be optimal the length of
counterpoise should be as well, but I cut corners and didn't do that.

I got lazy and after getting it close enough I switched on the ATU of the
KX3 and it tuned to 1.2:1. That ATU is a great feature for use with
antennas such as these where bandwidth is going to be narrow and tuning can
be a pain without a good ATU. Cannot imagine life without one when doing
portable stuff with compromised antennas... I'd spend all day tuning up...

Re: [Elecraft] Strong recommendation: MFJ 18xx-series single-band whips for KX3, etc.

2016-03-23 Thread Tom Crayner
Wayne,

Funny you should bring this up, I just received an MFJ-1899T today. Slapped
a counterpoise on it and at 6 watts running JT9 (in New Jersey) was able to
be heard (watching PSK Reporter) all the way in CA and Alberta. Just
worked a station in MN.

I'm not even giving the whip a fair chance... I'm sitting in a basement
with it cranked up to the floor joist over my head, nestled between 4 foot
fluorescent tubes and metal duct work. It tuned 1.2:1... counterpoise is
connected to ground thumb screw next to antenna jack.

I did groove a small piece of 2x4 for the right angle BNC connector to be
cradled on so all that weight of the telescopic whip doesn't damage the
jack...

Can't wait to take this down to the shore in a few weeks and see what it
can really do without all the disadvantages I've placed on it tonight
:-)

I usually set the THR on CW decode to about 3 for reliable copy. I would
like

to create macros to change it to 3 and 4 and also auto.

Can some one help me figure these out?

Oh and by the way the new P3 beta is awesome. Thanks

I use the decode as a backup to myself I guess I have not learned to have
confidence in my decode. Plus during dx or contest people fly with code, so
I need help there.

Thanks again.

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite: The ultimate control for your K3, K3S and KX3

2016-03-11 Thread Tom
Hello,
The latest release of Win4K3Suite is now available. In this release are new
graphical S-Meters for the K3, K3S and KX3. In addition, this release now
offers cross hairs for the spectrum scope.
Win4K3Suite is a comprehensive control program for the Elecraft 3 series
products and supports all equipment such as the KPA500, KAT500, P3, and
KXPA100 as well as LPPAN.
Win4K3Suite has a built in serial port router that works with ALL third party
products both software and hardware. As long as they work with the Elecraft
radios, they will work with Win4K3Suite. There is no need for LPBridge. This
solution is 100% stable and robust and can handle any contest you through at it.
Win4K3Suite also works with RemoteRig and allows streaming of LPPAN video from
the remote site: (Please see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8—Vk2WWLok
courtesy of Mats SM0FPR)

Read the latest reviews
here:http://www.amateurradio.com/win4k3suite-added-to-shack/

You can see some videos of Win4K3Suite in action here:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Win4K3Suite

There is a 30 day trial available at va2fsq.com

Re: [Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite...set your clocks!;

2016-02-14 Thread Tom

Hi
There were a couple of people that pointed out that for the elecraft
terminal window, it would be more appropriate to have the function keys F1
to F12 correspond to the messages 1 to 10 instead of macros.

So, I uploaded a new version 1.792

What we now have, is when you are in the terminal (it has focus) F1 to F10
correspond to the messages you define in the terminal. (Message 1-10).
In all other windows the F1 to F10 keys will send a macro as defined in the
Tools Settings.

Also, I have added the ability to quickly edit a message. Now when you
right click a message button and select edit, a small window will show up
with only that message. You can change it quickly at this point. Much
faster.

Thanks for all your support.

Many of the same colorful characters on 75m make regular appearances on 40m &

lost all interest in the hobby. View it on my QRZ'd page & email me if

[Elecraft] K3s pre-purchase question

2016-02-13 Thread Tom Brohl
Hello Elecraft subscribers,

I've been a ham for quite some time as a Technician class using
2-meter. I'm retired now with more time for my hobbies.

I'll be taking my General class exam soon and moving on to HF.

I've built many Heath kits in the day, so the Elecraft kits are striking my
interest.

I'm trying to configure a K3s kit and would sure like some help from you
experienced hams.

The up-front price is a lot for me so I'm trying to understand the
necessities? With an upgrade path every 6 months or so.

First, would I be disappointed with starting out with the 10-watt version? I
imagine I'll be doing more listening in the beginning. But if 100-watts is
important up front I'll get it.

How about filter options? I'm guessing the standard filter will be ok to
start out with?

I may add the 2-meter option since my current radio needs replacing. If I do
is the K144XV Reference Lock Board necessary for 2-meter operation?

How about the KBPF3A General Coverage Receiver Filter?

My antenna is a Cobra UltraLite Junior: 80-10 Meters 73 feet, installed in
my attic. I also have an Astron VS35m Power Supply, Heil PR-781 mic,
MFJ-993B Auto Tuner.

Please recommend what options I should get with the K3s kit.

Thanks for your help!

-Tom

Thank you everyone!!

I received many replies on what to purchase, what options, used, new, etc..

I have a lot to go through now, I'm very glad you all took the time to give

Don,

Wasn't the KIO3B code added at firmware level 5.x?

If so, not sure the K3 knows anything about the USB setting unless it is
polling those settings directly from the board itself.

The method of measuring is in section 4. They are looking for a limit of

In the case of RG400 with .195 inch OD, that would be 2/1000 of an inch
(yes, that's three zeros, two one thousandths of an inch) bending deformity
at the surface of the teflon jacket, or half the thickness of an average

Re: [Elecraft] Faint clicking sound in headphones

2016-01-25 Thread Tom

Hi Mike,
I know that the same thing can happen on older KX3's when they are connected
to a serial port running rig control softwarte. On the KX3, Elecraft can
supply a small bypass cap to rectify the problem. I'm, not sure if that's
the issue here but try the same and make sure the serial port cable is not
connected to the K3.

If it is the issue, call up Elecraft. They will probably suggest the same
thing as on the KX3.

Just today I notice a faint clicking noise when using my headphones and
only when the AF is turned up not when all the way down, here is my
setup.Elecraft k3, Begali key into a Winkeyer USB and the menu key
weight setting in the K3 is 1.10

Here is what I have tried to fix the issue with no success:
1. Tried different headphones.
2. Snap on chokes on headphone cord.
3. Removed Winkeyer and plugged key into rear of K3.
4. Tried a different key plugged it into Winkeyer and just to rear of K3.
5. Tried on Dummy load and clicking is gone.
6. Check all connections to make sure they are tight.
7. Tried my KX3 using same key and antenna and no clicks.
8. The clicking is happening on all bands.
I believe that is all I tried and I am at a loss as to what it could be, I'm
hopping it's something simple that I have overlooked.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S and WSJT-X

2016-01-25 Thread Tom Crayner
Ian,

Which rev level of WSJT-X are you trying to use?

I seem to recall 1.5.x had some issues with Hamlib and as a result some of
the PTT code was broke.

If you are running 1.6.0 I think the Hamlib stuff is fixed and you can use
K3/KX3 as a rig and then set PTT to CAT.

If you plan on running DX Commander at some point you can install it,
configure it to mange the radio under the config->port options of DX
Commander and then point WSJT-X to it by selecting DX Commander as the
"rig" in Settings->Radio. Then DX COmmander does the heavy lifting and
avoids the broken Hamlib piece. This should work in 1.5.x and 1.6.

[Elecraft] Win 4K3Suite now supports K1EL's WinKey for latency free CW

2016-01-08 Thread Tom
Hello,
The latest release of Win4K3Suite version 1.782 now supports K1EL’s WinKey
hardware and can be used in the Win4K3Suite’s terminal mode.
The terminal mode in Win4K3 supports the built in decoding of CW, FSK-D and
PSK-D of the K3, K3S and KX3. It also provides software based text to digital
and cw transmission. To do so, comport activity is shared between radio
control and the terminal functions. In some cases there can be latency
perceived by some people under contest conditions. WinKey offers a hardware
solution that uses a second serial port and thus eliminates any latency for a
smooth high performance solution.
Win4K3 interfaces with just about any 3rd party hardware and software with
built in serial port routing to the radio. It provides a high performance
solution that is extremely stable and contest worthy. All your logging and
digital mode programs can still be used with seamless integration. In
addition, Win4K3 has now been tested with HamPod for those with accessibility
problems.
You can see it in action here:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=win4k3suite

There is a full featured 30 day trial as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and K3 Untility software - Terminal

2016-01-08 Thread Tom

Hi Gerald,
Be sure that you have ONE program decoding the text. For example, if you
use the Elecraft Utility and you have a P3 with the SVGA attached or
software like Win4K3Suite and more than one of them are trying to display
the decoded text it will not work.
So if you use the utility, make sure the SVGA display for decoding is off or
Win4K3's terminal is closed.

That should take care of it.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and K3 Untility software - Terminal

Hello all
I was curious I was listening to a cw conversation tonight and it was flying
by. The operators were sending at 28 to 32 words a minute. Very hard for a
new CW op to copy, but my K3 screen was decoding like a champ. For kicks I
started the K3 utility software and went to the terminal screen. I set it to
CW and to my surprise it was not decoding. The K3 was still decoding fine.
Only every once in a while the software was showing a character such as the
number in the call sign.
Does anyone know why the K3 would decode and the software would not?
Thanks
Gerald - KC6CNN

Ah Amsterdam...been there on three occasions spending at least 10 days each
trip...hm...attending a conference there wasn't on our agenda though. Beautiful
city (the old part of the city) & a wonderful playground for adults :),
wonderful museums and oh those delicious coffee shops. The Dutch are the
tallest Caucasians I've ever seen in my life! Now we just go to Colorado for
that coffee shop experience.

[Elecraft] Rick & antennas...

2015-12-09 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
"The Buckmaster never wins compared to inverted vees though, but it DOES tune
up on multiple bands. It and the Elecraft tuner get along fine, so it serves
its purpose (which is NOT high performance)."

Whaaa? The Buckmaster is recommended to be installed as an
inverted V. That's sweet that the E Tuner gets along with it but I have the
3,000w version and run full legal limit on all bands (where allowed) that it
operates on without the need to use my tuner. Not high performance eh? Funny
stuff. I suggest anyone considering this fine antenna consult the eHam reviews
of it by people who actually own the antenna & have experience with it.
Comparing a beam antenna to a wire is sort of ridiculous IMO for what should be
more than obvious reasons. Lotsa haters out there as usual.

7-band, no tuner required, Buckmaster OCF dipole...except no substitutes. Built
like a tank's tank. Mine has been up for years thru high winds (100mph+), ice
storms as well as asteroid & comet impacts. Very low to flat SWR on all bands
that it's designed to operate on. Great signal reports worldwide. Mine is
installed as an inverted V. Get one. Thank me later. You're welcome in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 question - few signals show on the waterfall

2015-12-04 Thread Tom

Hi,
That's very typical. The P3 or LPPAN for that matter will not always show
real weak signals. The waterfall as opposed to the spectrum can be more
useful here. Also, averaging, set high will help dig out the signals.

I have a new P3 here connected to a K3. I can hear signals that do not
show at all on the waterfall, and barely on the upper part of the
screen. And signals that show on the P3 display do not show on the
attached VGA display.

I've gone over the Elecraft documentation and Fred Cady's booklet on the
P3 and I do not see any sensitivity adjustment for the display. There
is the level calibrate but if I move that to extremes, it throws off the
K3 and P3 showing the same signal strength. I don't think that is the
right adjustment for what I want.

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite

2015-12-04 Thread Tom
Hello,
Just a note that there is a new release of Win4K3Suite out there. Release
1.778 has a couple of bug fixes where some text colors were not correct in the
Frequency Memory display for a small subset of users. This has been fixed and
while I was at it, Scanning as supported by the K3, K3S and KX3 added. This
release also supports the old pre-XP Windows Classic theme since there seem to
be many people still using it.
In addition, this release now has preliminary support for 4K monitors with the
Panadapter. This allows up to 3840 x 2180 resolution for the panadapter. This
works quite well, but the downsampling has not yet been optimized. The next
release will offer this. It is quite a sight to see a 4K panadapter spanning
192 kHz on a 40 inch 4K display!
Just a note about support of third party products: Win4K3Suite has a built in
router allowing third party products to connect to the radio simultaneously
with the radio control capabilities. HRD, DXLabs, Logger32, WriteLog, N1MM+,
FLDIGI, and any other package out there is supported seamlessly.
You can download a fully functional 30 day demo at va2fsq.com

interface with Writelog and Wintest, the two programs we use.

The other question is that we have 6 K3’s on 3 different computers. How does
that work? Not sure adding more software is the answer.

[Elecraft] K3's for Sale

2015-11-08 Thread tom
The Comstock Memorial Station is contemplating replacing four of our six
K3's with K3S'. It is time for new radios with the upgraded synthesizer and
USB connections.

They are all K3-100's equipped with:
KRX3F Subreceiver
KVX3A RX Antenna Module
KFLA 500 in both receivers
KFL3A 1.8K in the main receiver
Serial Numbers are 3463, 3464, 4391, 4498. All have systematically been back
to Elecraft and have the important upgrades installed.

They are all in excellent working order with just a few cosmetic issues.
They are offered at $2,900 each with the original boxes, including FedEx
Home Delivery. A similarly equipped K3S is $4,150.

This would be a time-phased sale. Obviously, we will have to sell three K3's
to buy two K3S. Elecraft is quoting 3-5 day delivery for the K3S and we
would have to schedule the change outs around major contests.

S/N 3464 is in the box, just having been repaired at Elecraft. It is
immediately available. No trades. No haggling. W7RN is a not for profit
foundation subject to a chain of approvals.

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite

2015-11-07 Thread Tom
Hello,
The latest release of Win4K3Suite, version 1.774 contains performance
optimizations for QSY’s originating in third party software such as HRDLogbook,
N1MM+, DXLabs etc.
Win4K3Suite is a comprehensive Windows based control program for the Elecraft
K-Line and the KX3, supporting all hardware options available. It is possible
to control almost every control available including menu items and tech mode
menu items. In addition, Win4K3Suite supports export and import of settings
and operating parameters of the radios.
The software includes support for the P3 and SVGA adapters with the use of a
video capture board, as well as the IQ out from the KX3 and LPPAN with an easy
to use built in panadapter application.
Win4K3Suite integrates with almost any third party application such as HRD
Logbook and DM780, DXLabs, LOG4OM, N1MM, CWSkimmer etc. The integration allows
you to use all of the features of your favorite software with an enhanced

Re: [Elecraft] Help with a K3 Macro

2015-11-07 Thread Tom
Hi
Once you see the THR screen, issuing an UP or DN or UPB on DNB should do the
trick except that it wasn't in the firmware the last I checked. However Wayne
did add some firmware commands recently. I'm not sure if these were added. They
were to my knowledge, 4 out of 5 missing commands in the whole k3 command set.

[Elecraft] USB for K2

2015-11-05 Thread Tom McCulloch

Hi gang,

I think this may have been previously covered, so I apologize if I'm
redundant.

I know the cable from the K2 to the nine pin plug is not wired in a
"standard" way, but how do I go about interfacing my K2 to the USB port
on my computer?

I see this on Amazon, but I'm hesitant to try it:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00425S1H8/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8=2BU7MNUYG3YU2=I1591SJBBKODFX

[Elecraft] Beware...

2015-10-19 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
Some of you may belong to several groups that correspond to the different
radios you may own, I do. I own an Icom 756 Pro 3 and belong to that group as
well. Recently I've noticed an individual posting a 7800 for sale on both the E
Reflector as well as this group's site. What I find interesting is that he's
also posting it on the Yahoo 756 Pro 3 group's site as well only with a
completely different reason for selling it.

"Reason for selling? I upgraded to an IC-7850."

Hm His reason for selling given to this group & the Yahoo group was because
he "upgraded" to the K3 & now owns the entire K line. Smell fishy??? Does to
me.

Buyer beware, "A fool and his money are soon parted."...great advice given to
me as a teen from my best friends dad.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] KX3 - easiest way to panadapt?

2015-10-17 Thread Tom
Hi Ed,
Com0com provides a virtual comport pair that acts like a null modem cable. It
can be used to connect two software packages together as long as one has the
necessary logic such as Win4k3Suite.
Win4k3 has a built in router that listens on special ports for commands from
other software and then sends them to the radio or returns data. It connect to
the other software through com0com. It effectively provides lpbridge
functionality.  Thus in Win4k3, you can hook up nap3 to work through win4k3 and
it thinks its connected to a k3.
Hope this explains it. You can find a full explanation in the win4k3 manual.

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite

2015-10-16 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new release of Win4K3Suite, version 1.770. This release provides the
ability to assign labels to the radio equalizer buttons as well as several
internal optimizations.
For those of you who are currently using other radio control software such as
HRD or DXLabs, Win4K3 interfaces to the logbooks and digital mode software of
these third party packages using a built in CAT router. It allows you to
continue to use logging, spotting, digital modes with your favorite software
while providing vastly improved radio control.
The radio control features of Win4K3 are comprehensive, right down to changing
Tech Mode menu items. It is also possible to export the radio settings to an
XML file which can be loaded into Microsoft Excel.
The feature list is far to large to list here, but Win4K3Suite allows control
of the P3 with SVGA (and a hardware video capture board), LPPAN, the KPA500,
KAT500 and numberous third party hardware and software packages such as HRD,
DXLabs, N1MM, CWSkimmer (with VFOA to VFOB mapping).

Win4K3Suite is also now confirmed to operate with RemoteRig. In addition, the
Epiphan USB VGA capture board has been confirmed to work with the P3 – SVGA on
a MacBook running VMWare.

You can see the software in operation here
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Win4K3Suite although this is an
older version of the software (new video in progress).
You can also download a free 30 day trial at VA2FSQ.COM. If you have already
tried this in the past and would like an additional trial please contact me off
list.

[Elecraft] K3 for sale

2015-10-16 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
Elecraft K3/100 factory assembled transceiver for sale. This radio is serial
number 3494 and is in absolutely flawless condition, not even the slightest
blemish and it comes from a smoke free, pet free, kid free & climate controlled
environment. It's been kept under a dust cover from day one as has all of my
equipment. This radio has maybe 10 hours of use max on it. It is offered with
the following options for $2,300 plus freight:

K3/100-F
2.8kHz, 8-pole filter
2.1kHz, 8-pole filter
1.8kHz, 8-pole filter
400Hz, 8-pole filter
6kHz, 8-pole filter
K3 TCXO
KXV3, Transverter Interface
MH2, Hand mike (never used)

Fred Cady 298 page manual 2nd edition.

This radio ships in the original factory box with all the original paperwork
including the manual provided by Elecraft. Reason for sale...lack of interest
in the hobby these days. I'm good via PayPal & will provide any additional info
or high resolution pics if needed. The radio can be seen on my QRZ'd page as
well. If interested, contact me at:

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - Method to print K3/K3S configuration files from K3 Utility

2015-10-14 Thread Tom
For those of you using Win4k3Suite, you can export most menu and tech mode
settings as well as operating parameters to a file. This file is an XML file,
and can be opened in notepad and printed.
Not the most fancy presentation but it does provide a hard copy.

Re: [Elecraft] Windows 10 and LP-Bridge

2015-10-13 Thread Tom
Hi Barry,
No, com0com is a software null modem cable used to connect two pieces of
software via a virtual port pair. It has no logic for operating a k3. The
reason it works for you is that you are using Win4k3Suite, which has a built in
router that performs k3 command routing. win4k3 has functionality that replaces
lpbridge, and it uses com0com only as a connector.

Re: [Elecraft] Windows 10 and LP-Bridge

2015-10-12 Thread Tom
Hi
I think a more accurate description of what is missing in lpbridge is the
inability to use the DS and IC commands on the k3,kx3 and k3s.
These commands require an 8 bit character set, hence Unicode.
The lack of support for the ic and ds commands prevents decoding of k3 status
for many functions. In addition, almost all menu items can't be decoded.

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2015-10-06 Thread Tom Fitzgerald
Fascinating what kind of off topic crap is tolerated on this reflector while
other posts are simply censored & censored as in never posted. It reminds me a
bit of when one of the right wing whack-a-doodle AM talk hosts mistakenly
allows a listener with a brain through the screen and puts them on the
air...he/she/it will quickly begin talking over the caller and eventually hang
up on them so as to not risk some sanity getting onto the airwaves that makes
the host look as stupid as they always sound and frequently look. Interesting.

[Elecraft] Another Elecraft price increase...

2015-09-24 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
"We have hit the point where we will be increasing prices slightly on a number
of our products by about the middle of October."

Hm...again eh? Seems like everything is going up except wages for the American
worker. Seems they stopped going up about inauguration 1980 & that gap just
started getting bigger & bigger. I hope I live long enough to see Americans
"just say no" about this absurd situation. I guess I haven't got there yet
since we just bought a new 2016 Honda for the wife a few weeks ago but I'm
getting there. I think I got there with ham radio awhile ago. Someone remarked
about college tuition, new cars & the grocery store and instructed us to quit
whining. Hilarious advice really. Yes America, just take it and keep on taking
it. We plan to make more cuts & lower your wages even more, certainly not raise
them and the CEO's...They only make 300 times or more what the worker bee
does...they need a raise and a tax cut! So buck up! Quit whining! Buy it or
don't! We don't care!

I say don't.

[Elecraft] Warm greetings extended overseas through Elecraft mailing list

2015-09-16 Thread Tom Morehouse

Just wanted to pass a note that I returned, with my KX3 intact, from a
wonderful trip to Italy for two weeks thanks to advise and counsel through this
list serve.  Operating from a hillside villa overlooking the town of Todi was
quite an experience.

More remarkable, I received an invitation from Franco, I1FQH, to visit him
while we were in Piemonte (as a result of the communications on this site).
Franco was more than gracious and allowed me to operate from his gorgeous
hillside station with a wonderful vineyard, orchards, an amazing cat and a
superb antenna farm.  Then we had a delightful lunch with excellent food --
another real treat.  What a delightful experience and wonderful host -- both my
wife and I had an experience that we'll long remember.  Mille Grazie, Franco.

Thanks to all

[Elecraft] K3 vs K3s..."to be or not to be an "s"

2015-09-11 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
N1LQ-Dave...this is starting to remind me of the Apple iPhone drama...about
every 6 months a new iPhone comes out that's "better" than the previous one.
Sorta makes you wonder why they just didn't make the damn thing that way in the
first place, I think we all know why. I've owned all the iPhones from the very
first one up to the recently new 6 Plus w/128gig hard drive & now the 6s Plus
is out! Honestly!!!??? I've had gripes about all of them, use to be size (to
small), then camera resolution, then software bugs & the OS, etcetera etcetera
etcetera. Getting off topic...back to the radio...I have 3 radios inline
including a mid serial number 3,000 something K3. I paid tooo damn much for
all of them and am quite sure I can survive without the latest & greatest
version of the K3...the "s" line...ya just know that some day real soon there
will be the next latest & greatest K4 or some nonsense out making the new K3s
old news. I can think of about a hundred other things I'd rather do with the
than burn it on another ham radio but then again, ham radio isn't my life
or my passion, it's just a hobby. In the end it's a personal decision you have
to make based on many factors. Do you really need this new version or just want
it? It sounds like you have a great radio now...take a trip to the South
Pacific with the wife instead is my advice (at least one of you could go for
the same money maybe :), avoid getting that feeling of wondering why you blew
perfectly good money on something you really didn't need in the first place. I
find that it's the "wanting" that's the real drug, after you get the new
"thing", it's newness wears off pretty quick & then it's just the same old same
old again. Skip this version and wait for the next one is probably good advice
too, maybe the best advice, you know that it's already being thought about & it
is after all...inevitable. I'm staying pat until many of the physical features
of the radio are addressed...& they will be...eventually, the performance
upgrades will be in that future radio too. Don't get on the merry-go-round as I
did with all the different models of the iPhone, it's simply a waste of
perfectly good money better spent elsewhere or even invested and or saved. Just
my two cents!

[Elecraft] K3 to Pro III, my thoughts to Jeff, wb0m

2015-09-11 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft

I have both radios..bought both new...I'd advise you to keep your Pro III & add
a K3 or K3s but if that's not an option then I would say keep your Pro III &
wait a bit longer for the inevitable "next incarnation" of the K3...possibly a
K4. I think you will find that you will miss your Pro III greatly if you let it
go and you might not be convinced that you made a good decision after you get
your new K3 in your hands. When/if you do get it in your hands, your first
thought will be why is this K3 so much lighter than my Pro III???Yeah, it's a
bit smaller (mine sets on top of my Pro III) but your Icom weighs in at over 20
pounds and your K3 might only weigh 7 or 8 pounds...both use an external PS so
that's not the reason??? To many peeps that's awesome while to others it
suggests something (or a lot) might be missing. I'll tell you right now that
the Pro III is FAR easier to use than the K3 and you will need to purchase Fred
Cady's (KE7X) manual to really learn the K3...IMO. You will also likely sense a
certain "cheapness" to the K3 as compared to your old Icom. Depending on what
you do with your radio, you may not notice any performance advantage at
all...again...depends on what you do with it. I like both radios & don't want
to start an argument about this radio vs that radio yet again...there have been
zillions of such debates already, you can spend hours reading them online. If
your Pro III is as flawless as mine (& one of the last ones produced) and not
used that often (I have 3 radios which reduces wear & tear on any single
radio), I would think very long & hard before parting with it. Hopefully you've
sat down in front of a K3 and operated it so that your not surprised when you
open the box, if you haven't done that...you need to do so. I know some that
bought the radio and sold it soon after buying it because it wasn't what they
expected. For those that tell you that "you won't regret it", maybe they really
do regret parting with their Pro III but just want some company in the dunces
corner! I say that you may very definitely regret it! Mine is staying right
where it is.

Hi
I believe that Elecraft has provided that for a "future" feature that can
give the actual XY data appearing on the scope in ASCII.
This could be useful for remote panadapters. The feature is not yet in the

the very kind invite and look forward to seeing you Thursday.

2015-08-20 Thread Tom

Hi,
I'm happy to report that all functions seem to be good on the SVGA.
Averaging now works correctly, noise blanker as well, and the Y axis now
rounds out at 10 dBm instead of 9.

All functions appear to work from the API as well.

Thanks, Paul.

I just loaded the new beta to my P3 (no SVGA) and it all seems to be
working well with K3 s/n 4668 with latest firmware. I don't have any
way to check the new transmit monitor trigger level because the K3 is my
sole HF rig.

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite

2015-08-14 Thread Tom
Hi everyone,
The latest release of Win4K3Suite is now available. There are a few
enhancements and changes in this release such as :
- Support for the K3S preamp and attenuator. For this functionality, you will
need to use the latest beta firmware for the K3X available at Elecraft.com.
- Support for the latest beta P3 firmware, providing noise blanker support
(when available).
- Support for the latest k3 frequency memory editor.

Win4K3Suite is the most comprehensive K3 / K3S / KX3 comtrol and integration
platform available. It controls pretty well 100% of all functionality of the
radio and provides access and import / export of menu items including tech
mode. It supports the P3, KPA500, KAT500 and LPPAN. The software panadapter
provides accurate QSY in all modes and is simpler to use than other panadapters.

Win4K3Suite also has a built in software serial port router that allows
integration of third party hardware and software such as N1MM+, FLDIGI, MMTTY,
DXLabs, RemoteRig, and HRD Logbook and DM780. There are no known packages that

Re: [Elecraft] I wonder how many folks have had buyers remorse on a K3/K3S purchase?

2015-08-04 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Hi Jer,

Zero remorse during the couple months it took to have them shipped. Zero
remorse in the years since then. And I have added a P3, KPA500 and
KAT500. In process of adding upgrade parts that are included in the K3S.

Yes, I bought two. One fully loaded and the other minimally loaded. Zero
flashy and outstanding performance. Great when the flashy high end
radios cost much more and had much poorer performance. Since then have
picked up a KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 with tuner.

[Elecraft] K2 Sidetone gone

2015-08-04 Thread Tom Field
My K2, recently aligned and tuned up with the help of Don Wilhelm, lost the CW
side tone. It clicks when you close the key, and there is no SPOT tone or if
you try to change the tone volume in the menu there is no sound.
As a guess, I may have had a short in the key plug, where to start looking? I
couldn’t see the audio oscillator in the schematic.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - still in trouble with new firmware

Hi,
Funny thing, the SVGA noise blanker and a number of other items were added in a
January release of the beta software. I recall it was working, but there has
been no production release since then except for this new beta version.
I hope that with the new K3S there is a little more commitment to the P3.

Will add my name to list about no NB on SVGA. I didn't know that was supposed
to be working. Additionally bringing up the NB Level menu entry blue screens
the SVGA display and shows Tx/Rx Data Font: 0 in the upper left hand corner.

My ancient data processing bug instincts scream mismatched data position
definitions, but that that's just from an old systems design crank :)

Did the firmware files get back leveled or something? This really looks like
something that would have been fixed in house before public release.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: 630m amplifiers

2015-07-27 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Interesting discussion, but I'm now confused.

In all the old handbooks the discussion of amplifier design says ( page
76, 1941) In amateur transmitters, and r.f. amplifier is invariably
operated Class C ( see Chaptr 3). I though the final tuned circuit was
simply pulsed at the RF freq and then the output filtering knocked off
harmonics leaving a clean CW note. And in the article on construction of
a 100-175 watt CW transmitter ( page 155-157) the 6L6 crystal oscillator
was cathode keyed with a bit of RC shaping. Rest of stages powered up
when in transmit.

And I thought these days some AM broadcast transmitters operated Class
E. Clearly not linear.

No, CW requires a linear amplifier. CW is not constant-amplitude - the
amplitude changes every time you open or close the key. A class-C
amplifier would mess up the key shaping, causing key clicks.

Any true FSK or MSK signal should not be bothered by a non-linear
amplifier. The only caveat I can think of is that the amplitude of an
AFSK signal may have some ripple on it to the extent that the passband
of the transmit crystal filter is not flat. But I doubt that's a
significant issue.

Yes and no. Yes, the tank of a class C amp is pulsed and the output
network kills the harmonics. But it does NOT kill the intermodulation
distortion that is produced by the non-linearity, and that intermod is
heard as clicks.

BTW -- you need a MUCH newer Handbook. :)

impart some bandwidth. Its not likely that wide-band digital modes will
be approved in a band that is only 7-KHz wide so probably those approved
would work with a class-C amp. I think its just simpler to provide
class-AB then its a non-issue.

Re: 15-dB HF linear amp gain limit. If that is applied to 630m amps
then either I sell a kit or partial kit.
1mw in to 1w out is 30-dB and 100w out is 50-dB. I would have to
research the regs to see if the limit is for a certain level of input
(like 5w). Also the regs allow hams to sell amps to other hams without
this restriction (but at what quantity per year?).

First off I am not proposing to go into competition with MFJ. This is
just a home business building one at a time. If the FCC is going to
make this a small (tiny) business killer than its just not worth the
bother. If I say more than this it will get political and that is OT.

Is there interest in a linear amplifier taking 1mw drive to produce
either 25w or 100w?

I pick those two power outputs because with typically inefficient
antennas on 630m 25w = 1w ERP and 100w = 5w ERP (approx). These two
ERP are mentioned in the WARC-12 band approval and FCC as possible max
allowed power levels. Currently the ARRL Experimental Group is approved
at 20w ERP but there are not many stations running that in the group. I
run 100w with 0.1mw drive from my K3 for approx 3w ERP. 1mw is typical
output for mixers so the amp would be usable by low-power transverters,
as well.

I am wondering what kind of interest there would be for a linear amp
that could be driven by the K3s/K3? I would probably have an optional
Rx preamp in such a package. No idea of cost at this juncture as its
just in maybe status. Wayne has stated to me that Elecraft is not
intending to build such due to the limited market.

[Elecraft] [Elecraft K3]New release of Win4K3Suite - v 1.762

2015-07-17 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new release of Win4K3Suite version 1.762. In this release, band
mapping has been added to the ClubLog spotting utility allowing user
customizable mode switches when clicking on a spot. In addition another new
feature is the [LOGIT] directive that can be used in the K3 / KX3 / K3S
terminal mode which allows direct automatic logging to HRD, DXKeeper or ADIF
files.
This new release also has a few bug fixes related to the frequency memories.
Win4K3Suite is a comprehensive control application for the Elecraft K3 / KX3
and K3S radios. It supports all of the options as well as the KXPA100, KAT500,
KPA500 and with the use of a video capture board, the P3 as well. In addition,
the software comes with full support for LPPAN. Win4K3Suite has a unique
internal router as well which provides connectivity to almost every 3rd party
software in existence. This includes HRD, DXLabs, N1MM +, Log4OM as well as
various hardware devices such as serial controlled antenna tuners and devices
such as the STEPIR. It is also possible to use computers such as the Arduino
interfaced to various hardware and then connected directly to Win4K3 via a
serial connection.
You can see some of the capabilities of the software at
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Win4K3
and the software can be downloaded at va2fsq.com. There is a free full
functioning 30 day trial to download. If you tried this in the past and wish
to try again please contact me off list for a trial extention.

Re: [Elecraft] Proposed On-topic indication.

2015-07-16 Thread Tom Schaefer
I agree but it actually does seem too much to ask from the evidence. Maybe
folks don't know that you should always add OT to the subject line of an
off-topic post. Then after you write it, hit DELETE as its off-topic and has no
business on the reflector.

If folks have to share that latest nugget, go to QRZ or eHam or any other place
folks throw every passing though out for comment.

I will go back to my hole now and get my delete key ready :)

The only viable solution for this is to make this a moderated list.

That means that someone (probably Eric) would read and review every single
post before it goes out to the rest of us.

We don't want that, do we?

It's far easier if everyone just follow the rules in the list charter.
Doesn't seem like too much to ask.

In light of the flagrant inclusion of off-topic material on this list

It's as if guys know someone will have to read what they share and never ask
themselves if it's germane to the list. Germane in this case is ABOUT ELECRAFT
and not just of general interest to hams.

This is Internet 101 stuff.
