[Elecraft] K3 & RIGblaster pro setup

2009-03-09 Thread Tony McClenny
If anyone is using this combination of hardware, please advise the interface
cable connections you are using. Thanks. I have been using the RIGblaster
pro with my Kenwood TS-570D (has worked very well) and now need to construct
a new interface cable for the RIGblaster pro to K3.

[Elecraft] RTTY Power Level

2009-12-06 Thread Tony McClenny
Hi,

I need assistance please. My K3 is showing what appears to be a 5 watt RF
output on DATA A only. It allows me to increase power up to 110 watts, if
using CW or SSB.

I assume I have set something to limit the RF when using TX DATA.

Ideas? I would like to return the rig to adjustable output when using all
modes.

Read the manual? I have searched through it for the past couple of hours
and am not finding what I think I am searching for. Thank you in advance if
you can steer me to the solution.

[Elecraft] K3 Error Message

2009-12-22 Thread Tony McClenny
After months of working flawlessly, my K3 displays the "ERR KEY" message.

If I turn the K3 off, remove the stereo cable that connects the K3 "Line
Out" port to the computer "Line In" port, and restart the K3, the problem
does not recur.

I swapped out/in a different sound card and the problem continues. Would
there be a menu setting I may have inadvertently changed? I believe my
sound card settings remain the same as prior to having this problem.

Suggestions please!

[Elecraft] K3 and N1MM setup problem (Operator Error I suspect)

2010-02-03 Thread Tony McClenny
Please help me if you have time.

I have a K3 with the digital voice recorder (DVR) and wish to use voice
files from N1MM this weekend in the Delaware QSO Party. I would prefer to
use N1MM for the voice files and not the K3 DVR. The voice files were
previously used with my Kenwood TS-570D and a RigBlaster Pro interface.

I have the K3 connected to my computer via RS-232 cable for rig control
(works fine DX4Win logging and N1MM). I have two audio cables from the K3
to the computer sound card, which work fine for rtty, PSK, etc. K3 PTT-KEY
is set to rts-dtr.

When I click on the N1MM function key to transmit a voice file, the rig goes
into transmit mode BUT the voice file is not transmitted or if it is, I
cannot hear it in my headphones or via K3 speaker. The RF meter on the K3
does not indicate any outgoing power.

Can you determine from this information what I am missing? Thank you for
your consideration.

I'd be interested in hearing some comments from folks who have tried both.
How do they compare? I don't think this is a question of which one is
"better" as "better" is going to be defined by your operating style and

[Elecraft] N1MM Setup

2012-10-31 Thread Tony McClenny
Although I have used it before, cannot seem to setup my K3 with N1MM so that
it keys the rig - annoying - help would be appreciated. Thank you in

The program indicates "No CW port is setup in config".

Configurer shows port 8 with checkmark in CW box - perhaps my settings in
the COM8 box are wrong?

Using RS-232 cable from computer with virtual software on port 8 - other
programs work on this port.

Sound cables from computer to radio work for all modes using other software.

OE for certain.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Com Port Question

Bill,

You may wish to visit my website and check the "How To" section as I have
documented how I use my K3 and five different software programs all at the
same time with a single serial or USB port - the necessary software is
LP_Bridge, which is free - based on its value, I suggest once you get it
working that you send the author a "donation". Hope this will assist you in

I need some tutelage on Com Ports. The K3 and P3 both use Com Port 6 for
access to the computer. Com Port 6 is also used but the HRD/DM780/USB
Navigator and MMTTY. This is not a real problem as I do not use all these
"programs" at the same time. However, it would be nice to be able to access
the K3 Utility w/o having to shut down other programs. Being really
unfamiliar with Com Port stuff, how does one change com ports for various
drivers/programs?

I did try to change the com port by just selecting a new, unused, one for
the list in the  K3 Utility but nothing happened.

Thanks in advance for the tutelage.

[Elecraft] Dumb Question

All,

I apologize for asking this but simply cannot find it in the manual or

How does one transfer sound from VFO A in left ear and VFO B in right ear to

I enjoy using one ear on each when using two VFO's, but would like to hear
same in both ears when using one (A) VFO and cannot reverse what I created.

MMTTY, N1MM and other programs all work for me using one hardware serial
port and/or usb to serial as does DX4Win my logging program - by that I mean
all work at the same time on the single hardware port using LP_Bridge as the
virtual ports - works great!!! Try it and I believe you will like it.

Adrian,

As alternatives to a terminal only K3 Utility I know Fldigi works through
LP-Bridge (but that uses soundcard DATA A mode or AFSK A mode) because I
have used it along with NaP3.

I understand the deficiency - K3 Utility does it with no soundcard.
MMTTY may also work through LP-Bridge, it is worth a try.

[Elecraft] Echo when transmitting

2013-03-16 Thread Tony McClenny
Ideas to correct the following would be appreciated - thank you in advance.
This is something new and I am perplexed.

I am using a Heil Pro-Set Plus microphone/headphones (with elements HC4 &
HC5). The microphone line is connected to rear of K3 in the "Mono" jack.
The Heil headphone 1/8" stereo plug is connected on rear of K3 to "Phones"
jack. The footswitch is connected to rear of K3 "PTT In".

When in VOX the K3 stays in transmit and sounds like echo of shots (my
imaginary sound) - when in PTT (preferred mode), as soon as I press the
footswitch to transmit, K3 TX light turns red, headphones outputs a series
of sound of echoes even before I say anything and if I speak my voice
echoes...

Mic SelectFP.L with Bias set to Off

Mic + Lin On

Mic Gain 20

Comp 12

VOX Gain 050

VOX Delay 0.50

AF Gain High

SPKRS 2

SPKR+PHYes

Re: [Elecraft] Echo when transmitting

2013-03-16 Thread Tony McClenny
Thanks to everyone, who offered a suggestion. David's thought appears to be
the issue.

It seems you have pointed me in the correct direction - thank you.
Disconnected K3 input to computer soundcard and the SSB noise / echo
disappeared - now to fine tune. Thank you.

I had a similar problem some time ago.had me baffled for a while

If your computer is connected to line in and out try disconnecting
them. If the problem disappears then check that the sound card used
for the K3 audio by opening recording devices, then select the device
you are using for the K3 and click properties. Under the Listen tab be
sure that the box for "listen to this device" is not selected.

If it is it can create feed back that has some delays from both the K3
(if monitor Normal) and latency withing the sound card itself to create
this kind of echo. drove me nuts trying to figure it out.

also I find I need to keep the monitor level down when using the
headset, Yamaha CM500 here, otherwise there is some audio feedback

[Elecraft] Heil Kenwood / Elecraft AD-1-KM Modular Connector

2013-04-03 Thread Tony McClenny
If anyone needs this Headphone to Rig adaptor cable, I have one in original
package (never opened), which I would like to send to a good home. Price is
only $15 plus actual shipping cost.

If there is a huge demand (grin), I have another not in the original package
- same price...

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 presentation for a club?

2013-04-05 Thread Tony McClenny
If Elecraft or expert user(s) could arrange to teach a class on how to use
the K3, here is one individual, who would be so pleased to attend. I have
had the rig for several years, read the manual more than once, followed the
e-mail reflector diligently, experimented and learned to use multiple
functions with a computer (psk & rtty for example) but realize there is so
much more it can do than yours truly understands...

Although I would not want to travel to CA for the lesson(s), I would go as
far as Dayton or somewhere on the east coast. I love my K3 and have taken
it many times to various locations in the Caribbean while on vacation. I am
smart enough to realize that it is smarter than I - help in a tutored class
activity to learn more about "How to" would be appreciated.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 presentation for a club?

BESIDES THE ONE LISTED on the Elecraft site does any one have a Power Point
presentation they have put together on "How to Operate a K3"?

I have been asked to put together a presentation (pre Field Day) on general
and BASIC operation of the K3 for my club. For the past several years, I
have brought my K3 and more recently P3 to FD. My club members are mostly
contesters and DXers intimately familiar with their KenYaeCom rigs but for
some reason have a mental block when it comes to the K3. While I realize,
once you have the K3 tweaked the way you want it, you really don't have to
touch a thing, but these guys love to play with buttons. If anyone has put
together any kind of presentation helping explain the K3's operation please
forward it to me directly. I will be happy to consolidate any information
and make it available to anyone else who finds themselves in the same
position.

Please reply directly to: k2qy (at) arrl (dot) net

That was an excellent suggestion Don! I just implemented it here
under Windows Live Mail.

For some reason, this reflector has an inordinate number of
off-topic posts. I guess the moderators (Elecraft crew) don't
want to alienate their customers by clamping down too quickly on
the OT posters, so people get carried away. Here are some OT
threads, just from just the last two weeks:

Learning Morse Code - 24 emails
Computers in the Stone Age - 40 emails
64 vs. 32 Bit Linux Utilities - 20 emails
CW in 15 Meter Novice Band - 14 emails
Antenna Choices - 16 emails
4 Meter Band - started ok, but then went way off - 22 emails
E-Mail Spam Increase - 8 emails
PS2 is Dead - 12 emails
U.S Signal Corps Rhombic Book - 5 emails

That's over 160 off-topic emails in a two week period.

We should all be more disciplined in posting things here, or
maybe the Elecraft guys can appoint an independent moderator.
When the reflector gets flooded with off-topic posts, the
signal-to-noise ratio gets so degraded that it becomes easy to
miss a good on-topic post.
