Or you need a wireless extender with ethernet port(s). I am using EAX80 from
Netgear but there are cheaper alternatives

It's very worthwhile to use shielded cat5e/cat6 cabling and grounding all

increase in intensity, and then dwarfs any of the signals on the band.  This
spike tracks across as I tune; it is there whether or not the antenna is
connected.  I can tune to stations and hear them fine, but the display is
barely usable because of this very tall spike that won't go away.  I reseated
my cables connecting the PX3 to KX3, with no change in behavior.  I have no
other cables here to swap them out, and am kind of stuck

I have updated b both KX3 and PX3 to latest firmware, with no change in
behavior.

Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

Subject: [Elecraft] Upgraded K3 synthesizer module now available: The KSYN3A

The KSYN3A synthesizer module for the K3 is a completely new design that
improves on the original KSYN3 in several ways. All K3s shipped on or after
January 23, 2015 already include the new synthesizer (serial number 8801 and
later).

See feature list below. Ordering and installation instructions can be found
here:

    http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K3%20Parts

* * *

NOTE:  If you wish to upgrade a K3 that includes the sub receiver (KRX3),
you'll need two (2) KSYN3A modules, since the synthesizers for both receivers
must be of the same type.

* * *

KSYN3A FEATURES:

* FASTER CW BREAK-IN AND MORE ACCURATE CW TIMING

A dedicated coprocessor on the module permits faster transmit/receive
switching, improving CW timing accuracy with both internal and external keying.
This also speeds up receive recovery between elements.

* ULTRA-LOW PHASE NOISE

The KSYN3A significantly improves the K3's already excellent receive and
transmit phase noise characteristics at close carrier spacings. This, in turn,
improves its close-spaced receive dynamic range, yielding even better weak
signal detection in the presence of strong signals. In transmit mode, the
KSYN3A keeps the signal exceptionally clean, further enhancing K3 performance
at multi-transmitter stations, Field Day and DXpeditions.

* 600-METER COVERAGE

The new synthesizer provides complete coverage of 600 meters -- and below. VFO
tuning extends down to 100 kHz, with sensitivity gradually falling off below
450 kHz. Receive sensitivity (MDS) at 475 kHz is typically -120 dBm at the RX
ANT IN jack. Transmit output of about 1.0 mW is available for use with a
suitable external amplifier. (Note: 600-m allocations vary by country.
Operation on this band requires the KBPF3 and KXV3 options. For receive-only
use, an antenna can be connected to the RX ANT IN jack on the KXV3 module. For
transceive operation with an external amplifier, use the XVTR IN and XVTR OUT
jacks, and set CONFIG:KXV3 to TEST.)

* EXCELLENT MECHANICAL STABILITY

The KSYN3A is virtually immune to both physical vibration and magnetic
coupling, and operates over a very wide temperature range with no change in
performance. K3 kit construction is simplified, as the KSYN3A requires no
alignment of any kind.

Hello Wayne,
It is good to see improvement in RX phase noise which will affect the
reciprocal noise mixing.
Could you put the improvement in layman terms?  For example, in the original
KSYN3, a weak CW signal could be heard 10Khz away from a S9+60db signal, under
the new KSYN3A, what improvement can I expect?  Will it be now heard 1Khz away
from the S9+60db signal?
It would be better for you to give examples in this way so that for a non-radio
profession like me, can understand the improvements.

Daniel,

I am not going to answer your question because I have no answers about
macros.
However, I can offer you an alternative that I find useful.
First, I have programmed the first 10 K3 memory locations with Quick
Memories, so I do not have to use the band up/down buttons - just tap
MV and then one of the number buttons to switch to the last used
frequency on a band.

Then I have programmed memories for the M1-M3 buttons on each band. M1
takes me to the center of my operating range for CW, M2 for DATA modes,
and M3 for SSB.
I reserve M4 for saving any frequency/mode of interest on that band - a
double tap of the VM button followed by a tap of the M4 button will
save any frequency/mode of interest so I can return to it with a tap of
the MV button followed by a tap of the M4 button.

I know that is not exactly what you asked, but it works for the way I
operate.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] CES2014 micro power supply

2014-01-08 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi All

Just seen a smart idea at CES 2014, a micro power supply 65W wall plug style
and dream one day to see a 12v/20A (240+W or so) wallplug switching PS
eventually build-in my K3. Yeah I know filtering and harmonics could be an
issue (there are good solutions this days) but when you have to travel a
vacation style micro PS could save big $$ on flight. Still at home my 1st
choice is a linear big and heavy PS to stay on the safe side.

Re: [Elecraft] RS-232 over WiFi

2013-06-25 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
well, this is a good question, if you are planning to use a pair of this
devices one as master and one as a slave with some external omni atennas that
you might get maybe 80m or so but only in LINE OF SHIGHT!!!, in normal shack
conditions with wires and shields I would say maybe 10m or so. Also important
the level of interference in ISM band, the modulation for BT devices is GFSK,
DQPSK and DPSK, the good part is the BT protocol is designed to avoid 802.11
b/g/n/ac and can go up to 2485Mhz and at least for NA the upper freq is ch 11-
2462  as central freq so at 30dBc you'll get 2473, so there is some free
sectrum room to avoid house interference from wifi equipement (in EU I think
can go up to ch 14). The BT  BW is 3Mhz as far as I remember plus the protocol
is close to FHSS one. However the biggest BT killer are the 2.4Ghz wireless
phones, try to avoid this at home (I witched with DECT ones). Having a free of
interference spectrum will
extend the coverage coz the RSSI on wifi devices is not an absolute value
(is a long story with wifi/BT rx calibration) and is enterily based on SNR, if
there is an interference the BT device will report a lower RSSI and will
decrease the modulation scheme. In my HF shack I had no problems with HF
interference (no wonder the spectrum is faar away) consider mounting this
gizmos with external antenna in a pair config and do not relay on internal
computer BT cardmy two cents

Re: [Elecraft] RS-232 over WiFi

2013-06-25 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Appologize for SNR with this side wireless protocols, very much away from our
primary subject, the problems withn BT devices and IPhones is quite well known
and is not caused by interference but by bugs in protocol implementation on
both ends, (IPh and 2014 Jeep BT device). If you'll sniff the air with a BT
sniffer you can easy see what is the rootcause. Speaking abt Apple and wifi/bt
bugs, in the last 2-3 years a huge number of cross-compatibility problems
occured in the market, some fixed some never addressed, the latest one (few
days ago) is with wifi on new macbook air, try to keep updated both devices
with latest fw or use another handset (I assume you'll not willing to change
your car, is cheaper to change the handset loool). This is consumer market, is
waay different as business model than Elecraft business model, in a year or so
any consumer device will be obsolate anyway so nobody cares too much abt
bugfixing.

I am concerned about the reliability of BT for RS-232.  My new 2014 Jeep has BT
in the entertainment center and it drops data during songs from my iPhone and
Pandora apps with the iPhone about 2 feet from the entertainment console.  I'm
thinking that these holes in the music audio may be due to a faulty BT module
in the Jeep's audio system.

I've never really used BT before now.  Do most of you find the BT connection
reliable enough (sans obvious interference) to pass RS-232 accurately from my

Re: [Elecraft] TS-590S Audio/Rob Sherwood

2013-06-07 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Wayne, team

I am pretty sure at a certain point the K3 will go out of production due
component EOL (and I am sure elecraft already have a strategy, and this is
normal).
Now maybe is waaay to early to speak abt k3 discontinued but for a future
developement if will be possible, design K4 in such a way to keep some of our
old k3 optionals. Aparently seems is not a good marketing strategy but is not
(ham comunity is somehow different than classical consumer market, a product
lifetime is not 12 or 18months,  is 5 years or longer) and along with many new
fresh users, the old k3 owners could migrate smoothly into next one and
decision factor is going to be faster bringing on a short time more revenue to
sustain the production. Migration from K3 to K4 is not the same like from K2 to
K3, market is different, users are different..another class...On the other hand
Elecraft could reuse some of the old stock components/boards/test
manufacturing...etcmy two cents.

And one more hint...don't go over the OLED multi-touch screen technology for
further developements, is a waste of time, resources and ultimately is a waste
of money. I am scared abt MTBF of consumer displays, working somehow around
this field, the mtbf of consumer touchscreen displays is horrible, no wonder as
long as lifetime of smartphones is under 18 months on avg use, who cares abt
lifetime, mtbf, needs to be cheap...Wonder some other vendors how will face
repair ...loool

The new HRD could be very interesting for K3 use - the older versions lack many

Looking to hear good news.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Filter suggestions for new builder

2012-09-25 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi Stan
Mine is with FM/2.7k/2.1k/400/250 on both RX's. If you have on both RX same
filters the diversity RD is a dream, otherwise if you are not planning to go
for diversity you can mix any filter selection.
My two cents

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - Filter suggestions for new builder

I'm asking for a little help with filter choices.  I've read all I can on the
subject
and have come up with what I think is a good choice for me.
I'm going to be getting the sub-receiver so I'm going to be getting 2 of
each filter.
At almost $300 a filter set I would hate to make a choice that I later have
to replace.

I'm new to CW and spend about an hour a night working CW on 80/40/30/20.
I like to chase DX both CW and SSB.
I do some contesting but I usually only have an hour or two in each contest
to operate.
I'm just too busy with family and work to put more into it.  I would like to
do more.
I've never worked FM or AM/ESSB because I've never had the capability.
I'm coming from an Orion II and really liked the diversity reception and
want that back.

I'm pretty sure about getting the:
2.8 Khz, 8 pole
1.8 Khz, 8 pole
400 Hz, 8 pole

Wondering if I should put in the:
1.0 Khz, 8 pole
13 Khz FM

Thanks for any thoughts on the choices.

Re: [Elecraft] New beta K3 firmware!

2012-09-21 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi All,

I dream one day to see Elecraft building some kind of expansion slot to
accomodate more filters. Now all my slots are filled, 200/400/2.1k/2.8k/FM x2
for both RXs so no more free slots for AM or any other filter. I don't care too
much abt AM filter but I would like to squeeze two more filters, maybe
a 800 and 1.5k filter. Wayne, do you see technical possible to accomodate some
sort of optional expansion filter slot? I am sure many of us will welcome such
feature. If will ever be such an option but me on alpha/beta testing on top of
your list.

Using the FM filter does no widen ESSB or AM ... the bandwidth of
those modes is determined by the DSP modulator.  The only thing
the 8.215 MHz crystal filter does is to provide some additional
protection against transmitting the 8.245 MHz image (and according
to Wayne, provide some additional rejection of very low level
DSP/mixer noise).  In any case, the 13 KHz filter is *still* tight
enough to eliminate the image - else it could not be used on FM
 either.

In my case, the K3's main RX is full of filters - 13 KHz, 2.8,
1.8, 400 and 200.  I can not use AM or ESSB (if I wanted to) without
telling the K3 that the 13 KHz filter is really 6 KHz wide.  That
seems to be a significant headache and makes either FM or AM/ESSB
unusable for those who, like me, have a full K3.

change above 10M though depending on your license class. What this means

you can actually, legally run 6Khz wide AM on HF.

I'm looking at the Amateur LCD right now. It's a common misconception
 that

Re: [Elecraft] Ground Rods

2012-09-10 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi Gary,

Interesting discussion. Depends on what type of
soil, but as a general rule for lightning is much better with multiple rods
deep into dirt (9ft +) with spacing distance between rods equal or bigger than
the rod length. I've seen grounding installed close around a concrete structure
cracking
the concrete base on a direct hit. Many hams are literally pushing a 3ft rod
into dirt, inefficient, my opinion is to prepare the grounding before and salt
it periodically. Here is a good document, is a must to be read for the ones
with lightning activity.

Is there any advantage in having the Copper ground rod surrounded by

Hope this doesn't get too far off topic or develop into a prolonged

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DNR

2012-09-03 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi Fred,

I have a similar set-up with yours, on one side K3+P3 and other side
FT5K+SM5K+LPpan both connected to Quadra amp. My primary choise for low bands
is K3 due excellent flexibility of AGC and static noise exclusion from AGC
loop. My FT5K is batch March 2010 and K3 is Dec 2011 with 2.7/2.1/400/250 roofs
with dual RX. Side by side in low bands (40 and lower) the K3 performs far
better than FT5K mainly due AGC/NR setting combination, on higher bands mostly
in SSB my choise is FT5K due excellent DNR algorithms. Now there is no perfect
radio in the world, in my humble oppinion the combination K3+FT5K is the
killing one. BTW, I feed both audio outputs in SM5K speakers via a Behringer
HA4700 (feeding also two headphones and one computer sound card) so I spent
many hours A/B analysis.
Another remark, the learning curve of K3 was few times longer than FT5K, I
still play around with different DSP/AGC/NB combinations  in different band
conditions, I have abt 4-5 standard setting combinations for CW/SSB/digitals,
antenna type, prop cond type.

Being rather new to Elecraft I have only had my K3's for about a month I'm

Hi Fred
Wellcome to my world, in the last 9 months that I owned the K3 I still discover
new things, the ALC/NB/NR combination is a never ending story. Once I got
familiar with setting I start playing with feature interaction, depeding band
conditions I found more efficient one set of setting or other. In lower bands
noise is our biggest enemy and there is a very thin line between results but
that thin like make the difference between copy or no copy sometimes.
Speaking abt fiability the K3 is far better than FT5K. With my Yaesu in last 2
years I had to change one OLED, one encoder, meter instrument. With K3 only
concentric buttons :-))

ship product do a follow-up with them. As far as I undarstand Elecraft is not
a 10.000 employee company, I am not sure how many employee are working in
Shipping Dpt but considering the volume of sales I bet this support department
is understaffed and overloaded. I am looking only on SN only K3...in range of
7K so I bet at least 20 orders/day in different forms and quantities (my
guestimate) and in some ocations like new line e.g kx3 launch can go
over 50. And is well known office overloading is working resonable for peek
times but not on regular basic...my two cents

Hi
I tried to use serial port isolator with 5 wires to get better lightning
protection. I have 5 of these
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/RS-232-serial-port-photoelectric-isolator-/140677527776?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item20c108b8e0
with 5 wires dc separation. With my FT5K worked fine but for some reason with
K3 is not working. I should investigate closer the root cause, maybe levels or
maybe something else, that sounds like a plan for the next electrostatic
season. THe idea to get separation on serial port makes me feel safer when
comes to lightning.

Re: [Elecraft] Improved KIO3A Immunity to EMP

2012-05-24 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi Pete,

Look for serial port isolators that are not only on signal wires but also
isolating grounds, optically. Tripplite are jokes when comes to real
protection, just some MOV's and that's all . I've seen few years ago a
switching power supply blowing up the serial port because of bad decoupling
inside of it, so I learned my lesson to always spend more on computer PS to
avoid expensive damage on my shack caused by crappy design. Is well known the
comp PS, laptops or desktops are very very cheap, design is minimal and noise
is maximal :-)). Sometimes I wonder how they passed UL on the other
hand surprisingly the older PS's are more robust and better engineered. If you
look on price/watt no wonder are so crappy, my biggest concern is not the
lighning but the computer connection to radios, look how much costs price/watt
from Astron and how much is a regular 650W or more PS and you'll see the
difference in quality. On my computer now I've placed all kind
of snappon ferrites inside of computer, AC filters and replaced marginal
electrolitics caps and MOV's with better ones and the RF noise is waaay down
now.

I was using a serial port protector made by Tripp-lite when I lost my
second KIO3A, but the wire connecting my computer to a single-point
ground had come adrift, and several people commented that this probably
caused the failure.  On the other hand, I have been using serial-port
controlled radios for 15 years at this QTH, and never had sucha  failure
- perhaps the transceiver chips in those radios are just made tougher.

It would be hard to beat a K9YC serial cable -- CAT5 cable, with one
pair per circuit, the return of each pair bonded to the DB9 shell at
each end -- AND every chassis bonded together with short, fat copper.

see http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf for details

I was in several conversations on this topic at Dayton discussing how often
owners found the P3 helpful vs the KRX3 second receiver option. It ended up
being some of each. Contesters tended to find more frequent use for the P3,
some DXers, having used a 2nd receiver, never want to be without it again.

total of 89. If you include the scope and speakers there are adjustments for
both with them add 5 more. For the life of me I can't think of a need for
any more buttons than what are on this radio. Once the radio has been setup
the first time and the EQ setup for your voice and perimeters set I think I
have been into the menus maybe 2 dozen times in 2 years.

One bad thing about the Kenwood is the buttons are very small on the Yaesu
much larger I have big fingers it would be a problem for me. But to stick
another 50 buttons on the front of my radio I would have never bought it.

Re: [Elecraft] Fw: OT: Kenwood's new rig?

2012-05-09 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Guys,

I want to ring the bell to ham comunity abt new fancy radios with LED/OLED
displays. In the last half year or so I've seen on FT5K forum lots of people
complaining abt OLED display failure and I owne one...that scare me a lot.
Being involved in RD for over 20 years mostly in enterprise telecom I've
notticed in the last year a massive invation of consumer grade  components into
the enterprise/professional grade equipement. Starting with near suicide
initiative BYOD (bring your own crappy device at work) an going forward with
cost reduction lifecycle- a mandatory step in any lifecycle product, the MTBF
of most critical components, like displays, encoders, mechanical components,
start falling down dramatically. When you spend  few hundred bucks for a
smartphone that anyway sooner or later in max 2 years you'll change it is not
so severe but when you spend 5K+++ for a radio and after 2 years your displays
are going down and guess what? that display
is already obsolate part that scares me a lot. I am so happy the K3 does NOT
have any tft/lcd/led display build in and I hope the next K line generation
will avoid this big mistake of embedding displays in the radio and will stay
like this. Just my 2 cents regarding new fancy color tv transceiver from
kenwood. I have a strange feeling that we won't see aging this new transceivers
generation on our desk and will become a consumer product like a coffee maker
or toasterso sad

Your correct to this point it's still vapor ware no published findings or
even FCC approval yet. I also think that QST and Sherwood's reports will
make or break this radio as they have with all other high end radios. The
first reports will be published in Japan well ahead of here like the Yaesu
one's did with the 5000 4 mo before here. I will be compared to the FT-5000,
K3, and Flex 5000 pretty much in that order in rankings as they are
published and see where it falls.

As we all know it has a tough row to hoe with that lineup and those who do
purchase we will see if they sell them as quickly as they have the TS-590s
which I have seen even cheaper than a used TS-2000. Numbers change almost
daily in the radio market what was on top one day could fall the next just
one of those facts will look forward to see the numbers on the 990.

I beg to differ.  I have seen plenty of postings that indicate a fair number

It's almost comical reading the various forums where there seems to be a

will sell plenty '990s just as they have '590s.

Not to be snide, but the picture made me think I was looking at an Icom!

So far nobody knows what is ethernet port is doing...web server?

Apparently there won't be a real box to play with.  From what I've read the

Well, I got the VGA to S-Video converter today from Amazon and hooked
everything up.  It does a decent job converting 1280x1024 RGB video to
composite and S-Video.  A cable from its RCA output direct to a TV looks
pretty good.

Once I introduce the Slingbox, it all falls apart.  One problem is that my
slingbox classic set for my maximum upload speed of 768 kilobits/sec really
degrades the video just as Daniel predicted it would.  It is still usable
but hard to look at.  The main difficulty is that the Slingbox introduces a
six-second buffer delay.  This just doesn't work for tuning a radio and
watching the results.

Back to the drawing board.  I see that Grandstream makes a fairly
inexpensive ($120) video server (GXV3501) aimed at the security market.  Has
anyone used one of these who can give input on the buffer delay before I
waste the bucks?  One suggestion has been the Axis servers but they are half
a kilobuck.  A bit rich for this.

I may bring my K3 P3 here and continue using the TS-480 for remote.  I
really miss the P3.

Thanks,

Bob, W7KWS

Re: [Elecraft] Fw: P3, Remote Viewing via the Internet

2012-04-19 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Hi Bob,

With only 768 kbps you might have a problem. The sling codecs are not very
bandwidth optimized like flash let's say or others, on the other hand Sling
have a very bad habit to eat the entire bandwidth. 768kbps is a marginal speed
for sling, the image will be OK but you won't see details. On the other hand
based on my experience bandwidth fluctuates (kind of  networking QSB :-)) and
sling is adjusting codecs accordingly, is very tolerand in bandwidth variations
(you start getting an image from 3-400Kbps but low rez) of course the immage
quality is adjusted accordingly. Maybe your providers from Hawaii to State of
WA are more consistent but in my case the bandwidth from Europe to Canada is
constantly qsb-ing from 1000 to 1500kbps. Now to see P3 details over sling you
need at least 1Mbps, at 768Kbps the resolution will be marginal, and this is
best case scenario. The old Windows XP Sling Players had the possibility to set
the resolution manualy so let's
say you want always low res you could set-up and the eaten bandwidth never
crossed but with new player that feature is not anymore available.Other remark
the audio channel even if you don;t have any sourse plugged in mono set-up will
eat aprox 30-40Kbps (set-up as mono audio source, if is stereo you waste
90Kbps) and audio side cannot be disabled.
I am thinking for myself to use a kind of flash server instead of sling that
can be optimzed for low bandwidth, even a webcam will eat less than sling. QoS
will not help you, is just a way to prioritize the packets and eventually to do
limit the bandwidth but the router must mark the packets comming from a
specific application or device. to do QoS If you have only one device like
sling is easy to mark all packets based on IP or MAC, but in case of remoterig
there are different services comming from that device so needs to be prioritize
base on ports or on application level. Remoterig for the moment does not know
qos so all must be done in the router, I have no clue abt Peplink but with
SPA3102 is a problem, the only packets marked as Voice with highest priority
are the one comming from internal sip client (used by voip ports), maybe I am
wrong but this is what I remember.
I am also looking for a decent blackbox solution, once I'll got something I'll
post here resultslet's see. Any suggestions from forum users are welcome.

Thanks for the tips.  I have RemoteRigs between my two locations which will
be converted from my TS-480 to the K3/0 and K3 combination.  My router is a
Dual WAN Peplink Balance 20 since I have both DSL and cable here.  Both ISPs
have troubles from time to time and the router tests each circuit every five
seconds for Internet and fails over to the alternate ISP if necessary.  The
real bottleneck will be at the other end where the P3 will have to work
through a 768 kilobit/sec. upload limit.

The router on that end is a Cisco SPA-3102 VOIP router and I'm not likely
going to change that or I'll not have off-premise-extension telephone
between the two locations.  Since it tags its own voice packets for QOS
maybe it can be configured to do the same for other protocols.  I'll check
into it.  Maybe the RemoteRig has that capability.  I'll check that as well.

My round trip ping time between the two locations is usually around 110
msec. which has not been a problem to date.  My worry on latency is that I
don't currently know what the Slingbox will add to that with its video
buffer.  I know it will be some but I really am not sure how to measure that
from one end without a real time reference as to when the video was sent.  I
guess I'll just have to try it.

Good ideas Daniel.  Thanks!

[Elecraft] Fw: P3, Remote Viewing via the Internet

2012-04-18 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Bob,

I am using also Sling from time to time for my parents when they are visiting
me in Canada from YO land to watch local programs in Romanian and on my end I
am using a Slingcatcher (RX-er), the stream from Europe to here (on Rogers
Network) is abt 1.5Mbps, not too bad but delay is around 160msec.
A good idea is to think  to set-up QoS on your routes on both end (I hope the
providers infrastructure are forwarding qos tags also otherwise is a waste of
time) to eliminate the possibility of adding additional delay in your remoterig
(SIP) voice packets. Now I am experimenting different mikrotik (router)
configuration setup adio sip server with highest priority- Voice (same with CW
key packets) and rig control as Video priority (one step lower) . Sling is
eating lots of bandwidth so gotta be configured with best effort (lowest
priority) otherwise lots of additional delay will be added to existing one.
I am planning to try a remoterig from my overseas shack here in Canada with the
beautiful K3/0 solution, but still in experimental phase with routers
configuration, mikrotik routers are linux based, very complex and requires deep
networking knowledge. There is a long discussion how to configure the beasts,
UDP packets, size of the packet, rate control so and so...not an easy task.
Would be nice in the future Elecraft to take one step forward and to integrate
remoterig into K3/0 eventually to sell a compete solution including routers
already preconfigured for best performance, I  know this will be faar away from
their main core business but I see IP integration into hamradio world moving
forward faster than we think. On youtube there is a clip with a remoterig over
3G network from mobile, so in the near future this kind of integration won't
be considered so exotic.

Subject: [Elecraft] P3, Remote Viewing via the Internet

I've been interested in remote control of my station for about ten years now
and have experimented with just about every method there is between Seattle
Hawaii.  Now that remote controlling the K3 is easy with the RemoteRig
device and the new Elecraft firmware, I’m headed down that path.  However,
the current state of most devices makes remote viewing of my P3 pan adapter
a challenge and Elecraft has not addressed this as yet.  After experiencing
the value of a P3 for the last year I miss it terribly when I’m at my remote
location.

To date it has been difficult for me to view most waterfall displays
remotely due to the high bandwidth requirements of the ever changing
picture.  I’ve tried remote viewing of many PSK-31 displays with poor
results.  The bottleneck is usually the low upload speed of my consumer
Internet circuits which are cable at one end and DSL at the other.  Their
upload speeds are 1-megabit or less and remote control programs such as
Microsoft's Remote Desktop, PC-Anywhere and VNC just don't compress the
video enough for a satisfying result and it locks things up waiting for each
new frame of video.  However, MPEG4 does a nice job of transmitting my local
news in standard definition NTSC at about 500 kilobits/sec.  So, I’m going
to try that method for my P3.

I haven't tried this yet but I'm gathering the parts for the experiment and
I should know more after I visit my P3 at the remote location and wire
things up.  Unfortunately that won’t be for over a month and this is not of
interest to my adult children who are there to kick most other things when
needed.  If anyone else wants to try this before I do, I’d be very
interested in your results.

I have an old Slingbox Classic that I use to send local, over-the-air
television to Hawaii so that I can watch the local Seattle news from here.
This unit accepts video via an RCA or S-Video connection as well as having
an NTSC tuner.  They don’t offer this older unit any longer but their  newer
offerings include the PRO PRO-HD models which have either no tuner or, in
the HD version, an NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner.  SlingMedia.com claims a 400%
improvement in video for these newer offerings over what my classic
produces.

I’ve found an $18 device at Amazon.com (Kanaan PC VGA to TV Composite Video
RGB Converter) which claims that it will convert RGB video to S-Video.
There are other converters listed so be careful that you get one that will
accept video in a resolution that the P3s SVGA card will produce.  I’ve
chosen 1280 x 1024.

This unit should accept the output of the P3’s SVGA card and convert it to
S-Video ready for the Slingbox.  The SlingBox should then send it over the
Internet to my remote location using MPEG4 compression and be ready for
viewing on my PC using the SlingBox player that came with my classic unit.
The main unknown right now is the latency of the video buffer and how that
might impact operating.

This arrangement will not allow

No Wayne,

You are not biased at all. Numbers are numbers above a certain trashold is hard
to feel the difference in real traffic, you won't feel 1 or 2 dB difference in
DR but you'll feel a lot in AGC response...a lot. The strenght of K3 is the
huge flexibility in AGC settings plus the unique static noise tolerance in AGC
loop feature. Regardless the 2KHz DR the contest conditions are far more
complex than two carriers testing and is very hard to draw a conclusion after
one day or one month of  operating. So far today I use my K3 90% of time in CW
and 40-50% in SSB/digital and just maybe less than 10% in CW with FT5K and
little bit over 50% in SSB/Digital. I am trying to monitor my operating
behaviour in time and to draw a kind of dynamic graph of usage. Is
interesting first few weeks the proportion was oposite. K3 maybe less than
10%...why? due lack of knowledge. This is why I said is hard to love the K3 in
the first day of use, learning curve is waaay
longer, requires extensive reading. ON4UN low band DX and KE7X  are my
bibles.and still discover thing. Is fascinating. I would recomand everyone
to read this books before order K3, you'll save some time.

I can't speak for the test conditions used here, but for an
independent comparison of most ham transceivers, see:

http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

Sherwood sorts his table by 2-kHz (close-spaced) dynamic range. The K3
and FT5000 have the top spots. I'm still not entirely sure why Rob put
the FT-5000 above the K3, given that they tied on narrow-banded IMDDR3

But then, as anyone on the list will tell you, I'm hopelessly biased.

Not at this time. Possibly in the future, but just the front panel and
case can be reused.

I am finally getting this up on the web order form later today. (It took
more time than expected to recover from the two ham shows back to back
over the past two weeks.)

The K3/0 is $695.95
The Remoterig 1258MKII set is 499.95

We'll also have our cable sets up there for the various configurations.

Re: [Elecraft] No Response From Elecraft

2012-02-07 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Wayne,

In over 22 years in telecom RD business over 3 continents (working for
ATTWireless, IBM, Cisco, Siemens and many other big players) I've never had
the chance to see such a geat customer like Elecraft. If someone knows a better
company pls let me know coz I don't :-))
I was amazed to see the number of employee are under 50! wowor so and
product quality and reponse time looks like is over 1000 employee :-) Actually
this was one of the reasons to go for K3 and I can say after 2 months  spent
with the small giant I am impressed, overall K3 side by side with my FT5K
functionwise is at least one step over.
Tnx guys

Interesting, but certainly not my experience with Elecraft.

It's unusual for it to take more than half a day for us to get back to
a customer on a service issue. But it can happen sometimes if we're
short-handed or have a higher work load. Today most of the technical/
support staff is at a long lunch meeting, but I've already contacted
them by cell phone, and this customer's issues will be dealt with when
they return.

I can understand how he feels. I've had my share of things go wrong
with new products, and it's no fun being on either side of the
equation. Fortunately it's rare in our case.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Hum on transmit

2012-01-23 Thread VE3GNO Daniel
Try to use a car battery and check if the humm is still there, if yes than most
likely is something inside the K3, if not than concentrate on PS. I've put on
mine some big chocke on K3 DC input and I'm using SEC1223 with no hum problems

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Hum on transmit

K3 Experts:  My K3-100 has been flawless in its performance until yesterday.  I
had a schedule with W5ZNN who told me I had a hum on my signal; I put my
headphones on and sure enough there it was on transmit.  I tried plugging the
Astron 35M directly into the AC outlet instead of the outlet strip - no luck,
hum was still there.  I connected the K3 to my SEC 1223 switching power supply
and, you guessed it, the hum is still there.  I hate to think there's something
amiss with the K3 but it looks that way.  Any ideas?
