Re: [Elecraft] Li-ion batteries for KX1 ??
Hi, Phil, I remember posting this information some time back but can't find it. So here is a summary: I found the best solution to portable operation with the KX-1 is to use rechargeable 3.7 VDC Li Ion AA cells. You have to rewire the battery holders so that they are in parallel rather than in series. That gives you three cells in each holder at about 11.1 VDC. The power output when operating portable then approaches the same levels as when operating from a power supply. One source of the cells is at http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1336 . There are many other places to get them as well. You also need a charger that will accommodate the Li Ion. I did find that these cells are minutely smaller than standard AA cells. You can get them to fit snugly into the holder by putting a small blob of solder on the contacts in the battery holders (not on the batteries!). Some KX-1 users have built charging circuitry into the KX-1, but I elected not to do so as it really complicates things. So the batteries have to be removed from the rig for recharging. But there is information on incorporating a built-in charger on the web. Let me know if you have any questions . . . 73, John, WA6L -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Li-ion-batteries-for-KX1-tp6295637p6303347.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] k3: K144XV and odd repeater offsets
Our club's repeater has an odd offset. TX is 146.475 and receive is 147.420 (- 0.945). Getting this programmed with the K144XV has proven to be a problem. * The menu option for repater offset does not allow a 5 KHz change. I can pick only .940 or .950 * I can program the K144XV for split operation, with the TX frequency in VFO B. That works fine, but . . . * When I save this combination into memory, it does not retain the split. When I recall the frequency from memory, I have to manually enable split again. This is not a huge deal, but it seems to me it should save the split. Any ideas of a way to work around this problem? Re: [Elecraft] K3 repair
I sent my K3 in about 2 months ago for some mods and updates. I was originally told it would be a 2-3 week turn around. After 3 weeks I contacted them and was told it would be 5 weeks. After 5 weeks, I contacted them again and was told that it would go on the bench the following week. It did go on the bench the following week and was returned quickly after that. All told I was without my K3 for 7 weeks. The only real complaint I had with the entire process is that there was no proactive communication. I had to inquire each time a deadline passed in order to get an update. 73, John, WA6L -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-repair-tp5243177p5245069.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Ten-Tec new QRP rig (from China..)
This is a rebranded HB-1A, made in China and previously marketed only on the Internet. I purchased one on ebay about a year ago and wrote a review for QRP Quarterly. To summarize, the designers of the HB-1A made some design choices that differentiate it from the KX-1. For example, the battery compartment holds 8 cells, which means that both the operating voltage and the power out are higher (typically 5w). On the other hand, there is no room for a tuner, and you have to use an external tuner or a tuned antenna. On the plus side, the HB-1A has a somewhat better display (more digits), and a goodly number of frequency memories. On the negative side, the internal keyer is very limited, and there are no provisions for a built-in paddle. So while it will remain an individual choice, I found that the KX-1 was an overall better TFR rig than the HB-1A. My HB-1A went back out to ebay, where it sold immediately. The KX-1 is still here and still in regular use. 73, John, WA6L -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Ten-Tec-new-QRP-rig-from-China-tp5128656p5131485.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Using /QRP in CW contests
Very well put! Thank you for posting this. The majority of my operation in contests and otherwise is as a QRP station. I have never seen any reason to add the /QRP suffix to my call. It does not help either station and as you state so well, it can actually hurt. When contesting as a QRP station you quickly get a feel for which stations are going to be able to hear you and which ones won't. For those who won't hear you, due to either poor conditions or because of a pileup, you mark their location on the band and try again later. For those who will be able to hear you, they don't need to know (and don't care) that you are QRP. 73, John, WA6L -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Using-QRP-in-CW-contests-tp5046634p5047033.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Though I am not sure it will solve your problem, you may want to try Cocoamodem software. I cannot get enough level out of the "stereo out" on the K3 to get a good decode, even though I adjust in software on the K3. What am I doing wrong? Re: [Elecraft] Dilemma: K1 or KX1 - I can't decide
Hi, Doug, That is a tough one. You might want to start (if you haven't already) with the KX-1 FAQ at http://www.elecraft.com/KX1/kx1faq.htm This also has a section on KX-1 and K1 comparison. I built a K1 and ended up selling it after getting my KX-1. I do have to say that I miss the K1, but for me the KX-1 was a better fit. As others have said, you need to determine what you are going to do with the radio and go from there. The big advantage to the KX-1 is its portability. I have mine in a small case with ear buds, two small spools of wire (my antenna) and the BNC to binding post adapter. I can throw this into any suitcase or backpack and have a radio with me wherever I go. Once you get where you are going, you an be up and running in minutes. The built-in paddles mean that all you need is a place to sit. No table required. I have modified the battery setup on my KX-1 to get 12VDC and 3.5 watts, so the difference in power between it and K1 is negligible. What do I miss on the K1? The primary thing is 15 meters. I wish I could get that on the KX-1, but I think I will build a MFJ Cub to cover that band. At any rate, you will have fun building and operating the rig no matter which way you go. Good luck and enjoy your recovery! 73, John, WA6L Doug Person wrote: > > While I hang around the recovering from my back surgery and a nasty case > of pneumonia, I've run out of projects that require melting solder. > This of course means its time to order another kit. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 high power
Hi, Ed, I don’t know if I have any helpful input, but I have some input nonetheless. First of all, what type of batteries are you using? Have you measured the voltage of your battery pack under load? That would be my first troubleshooting step. Secondly, I have noticed on my KX1 that 20M always has lower power output than the other bands. With 4W measured on 40M, I get 2.9W on 20M into a good match. As an aside, I found the best solution to portable operation with the KX-1 is to use rechargeable 3.7 VDC Li Ion AA cells. You can get them to fit into the holder by putting a small blob of solder on the contacts in the battery holders (not on the batteries!). Some KX-1 users have built charging circuitry into the KX-1, but I elected not to do so as it really complicates things. But there is information on doing this on the web. At any rate, please share with the group what you find out about your problem. Good luck and 73. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction
Hi, Roy, As I approach a year's ownership of the K3, I have to say that there are very few times that I find the NR capability to be useful. On a very noisy band and with reasonably wide bandwidths (> 800 Hz) the NR can work well, but never without pressing the Level button and optimizing the setting each time. When I compare the K3's NR with my K2's, the K2 seems far superior to me. It may be because the K2 does its DSP at the audio instead of the IF, or it may be that the K2 implements longer FIR filters. Whatever the reason, the K2's noise reduction works much better and in my shack is left on almost all the time. Both the K3 manual and the Wikipedia explanation of the K3 noise reduction recommend using NR only with a wide bandwidth, and imply that it is not as effective on SSB as it is on CW. I concur with these recommendations, but I have to say that I agree with you. The NR implementation could have been done much better. 73, John Roy Morris-6 wrote: > > When I turn on NR the audio noise level goes down. When a SSB signal is > received the audio peaks. Re: [Elecraft] Your Opinion: The realities of QRP vs. QRO
I really, really tried not to respond to this thread. It was definitely a troll, but after reading through these messages the hook finally set. I just don't understand the need within the Ham community to create these arbitrary bifurcations. Why QRP vs. QRO? Why SSB vs CW, or straight key vs. paddle vs. keyboard? Why contesters vs. rag chewers? Our hobby is so broad that there is room for all of these differnt viewpoints and different operating styles. Further, there is no regulation, no law, no tradition that states you have to participate in any of these activities. If something "disgusts" you (a genuine grumpy old man remark), then just avoid it. There is plenty of bandwith out there -- just spin the dial. Re: [Elecraft] K1 ANTENNA
I have several antennas that I have tried with my KX-1. If you have the space to get it into the air, you can't beat the Par End Fed 1/2-wave dipole. It is easy to tune and gets surprising results. You do have to get one end into the air. A tree or light-pole works fine. On one occasion I had it feeding out my hotel room window. Re: [Elecraft] K3 + Microkeyer II - RF into paddle input
Terry, I don't know if this is the same problem, but there is a well-documented issue with MicroKeyers (actually with the Winkey chip). It has to do with the properties of certain metallic compounds used in the contacts on the keys. The Begali keys are the ones most apt to have the problem, but there could be others. You end up with extra 'dits' and occasionally other anomalies. The fix is somewhere on the microHam USA web site -- they sell an interface that goes between the key and the MicroKeyer and fixes the issue, Good luck and 73, John, WA6L g4amt wrote: > > Has anyone had a problem with RF getting into the paddle input of the MKII > ? > Problem is reduced somewhat by careful adjustment of the router `Winkey` > page, but essentially series of Ds likey to turn into Ms and Gs (!); fine > with K3 on test so has to be RF based. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Lost in Sub-RX Operation
I found the problem. After taking the cover off of the KRX3, I discovered that J92 was broken. There was no contact and of course no AUX signal. It appears that there was too much pressure between the KIO3 board and the cable attached to J92. I have contacted Elecraft support for next steps. [Elecraft] K3: Lost in Sub-RX Operation
I've had the KRX3 installed for weeks, and it seemed to be working fine. However, during the ARRL 10M contest, I decided to try diversity reception. I have two antennas attaced to the ATU Ant1 and Ant2 ports. The KRX3 is set for ATU. When the SUB is on, and linked, the sub-receiver works fine when switched to MAIN. I hear a signal in both ears. When switched to AUX, the sub-receiver is totally deaf -- nothing -- no signal whatsoever. BSET shows that the sub-receiver is using the other antenna (Ant1 or Ant2, depending on what the main receiver is using), but no signal. So, I am lost. Either I have something set wrong, or there is a problem with the KRX3. I would appreciate any help or suggestions before I go the service route. Re: [Elecraft] Musings on Noise Reduction
You may be on to something there, Lee. I didn't even try SSB after making those adjustments. Still and all, there is work to be done on the K3 NR system, or perhaps it is the AGC algorithms. I still find the K2 noise reduction much more effective and certainly easier to use than the K3's. Thanks and 73, John, WA6L Lee Trout wrote: > > John: Thanks for the suggestions. Re: [Elecraft] Musings on Noise Reduction
I started this thread and I have been watching the replies with interest. Dick's question about AGC settings piqued my interest and I did some additional research. First, Lyle Johnson's message here: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-AGC-Settings-Tutorial-td681120.html#a681120 does much to explain the AGC settings. Then, Fred KT5X's message here: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-AGC-settings-td395668.html#a395668 provided the inspiration to put the AGC configuration settings on the PF1 and PF2 buttons. Armed with this information, I spent an hour or so experimenting with AGC and Noise Reduction. I am pleased to say that I found a combination that has vastly improved my NR experience. The noise reduction is now working pretty darn well with a setting of F3-2. I won't go as far as to say its as good as the K2's (yet) but it's getting there. I urge you to do your own experimentation, but here are the settings I landed on: AGC THR = 7 AGC SLP = 12 AGC F = 100 Thanks, good luck, and please let me know if you come up with settings that work for you. 73, John, WA6L Richard S. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Vivat Rex
I often hear that old saw when people discuss QRP. However, I am not sure it is true or particularly meaningful. He gave me a 559 report before he knew I was a QRP station. If you do the math, you will realize that if I was a 5 on his S-meter, 100 watts would give him a 7 on his S-meter. It is hardly a lot of work to hear a signal that is 2 S-units down. QRP on CW is not much of a handicap, and it usually does not take any extraordinary skill to copy it. Additionally, I have had many, many contacts with other QRP stations. This has been in contests sponsored by the NAQCC, ARCI, and other QRP organizations. Who is "doing all the work" when two QRP stations contact each other over a long distance? I have had some QRP contacts where the other station has shown incredible patience and skill in pulling my signal out of the mud, and I am very grateful for those excellent operators. However, that is not the norm. 73, John, WA6L On Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 3:03 PM, Stewart GM4AFF (via Nabble) < [EMAIL PROTECTED]<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > wrote: > I hope the ON at the other end was using an Elecraft radio too - he was > the > one doing the work! > 73 > GM4AFF > > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL > PROTECTED]<http://n2.nabble.com/user/SendEmail.jtp?type=node&node=1590811&i=0> > [mailto:[EMAIL > PROTECTED]<http://n2.nabble.com/user/SendEmail.jtp?type=node&node=1590811&i=1>]On > Behalf Of WA6L > Sent: 27 November 2008 16:00 > To: [EMAIL > PROTECTED]<http://n2.nabble.com/user/SendEmail.jtp?type=node&node=1590811&i=2> > Subject: [Elecraft] K2: Vivat Rex > > > > > After months of using my K3, I am spending time again with my K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Transverter Question
Hi, Don, I did double-check and the RANT is off. What you say about the RF setting is interesting. I am confused about what that setting is supposed to be. If I set RF=36 (the IF of the Transverter) then the display comes up as 50XXX.XX. If I set the RF=50, the display comes up as 64XXX.XX. However, you could be right. Perhaps I am supposed to set the RF=50, then use direct frequency entry to get the display back to the 50 MHz band. There was some mention of that in the manual, but I didn't really understand it at the time. I will give that a shot when I get home this afternoon. Thanks for the reply and for (hopefully) pointing me in the right direction. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again and 73, John, WA6L John, Is there a possibility you have RANT turned on for the TRN1 band? Check in the menu. If you still can't hear on the 6 meter band, switch to the TRN1 band and attach an antenna direct to the K2 antenna jack. Can you hear the 14 MHz signals? If so, the K2 is doing its job and you should look to the transverter for further problem solving. It will make no difference in reception, but I do find it strange that you have set the TRN1 RF at 36 - it would normally be set to the frequency of the transverter output (50). You may have to do a direct frequency entry to jump-start the display at the proper frequency. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K2-Transverter-Question-tp1402996p1403259.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 Transverter Question
Hi, Folks, I have a K2, serial 4004 with 203d & 1.07 firmware. I am trying to interface it with a Ten-Tec 1208 6m transverter. The transverter has a 36 MHz IF and it works fine. When connected to ANT2, I can tune to the 14 MHz band on the K2 and send/receive 6m signals with no problem The problem occurs when I try to set up the TRN1 setting on the K2 menu. I use RF=36, IF=14, Offset=0 and Out=5w. The display indicates 50XXX.XX, but I don't receive any signals. It is as if there is no connection to the antenna. Even when sending a signal from another 6m rig in the same room, there is no reception on the K2. I can switch back down to 20m and once again everything works from the transverter. I have read the application notes on the Elecraft web site and gone through the manual carefully. But either there is something wrong or I am missing some important detail. Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3
Hi, Dave, Wow -- I know exactly what you are talking about! I received my KRX3 and there it sat in a box for two weeks. I was more than a little scared to install it after reading about some of the horror stories on the reflector. Two weekends ago I took the plunge. I set aside an entire Sunday, cleared the work bench, and dived it. I have to say, quite honestly, that it was much, much easier than I could have imagined. I think being a little scared might have helped, as I was VERY careful and took my time. However, it all went together ridiculously easy and I had no problems whatsoever. The front panel was much easier to get off and reinstall than it was the first time I put the K3 together. In the entire process, the only problem I had was a bent screw. The decision is yours, but I wouldn't hesitate to do the install again. Good luck and 73 . . . [Elecraft] K3: KRX3 and VFOB
I received my KRX3 and installed it with no problems. All is working as it should, except . . . There is a strange behavior that may be by design, but which is a bit inconvenient. It involves the KRX3 settings and how they are applied to VFOB. Here is an example. I have the main receiver on 80m CW. With the sub-recevier on, I press BSET and make sure that it is also set to 80m CW and that I am sharing the same antenna as the main recever. Now, I turn the sub-receiver off. I change the main receiver to 80m LSB and go to split operation (as I did to try and work VK9DWX). However, when transmitting on the VFOB frequency, nothing happens as VFOB is transmitting CW. The only way around this is to turn the sub-receiver back on, push BSET, change to LSB, then turn the sub-receiver off. Now VFOB transmits on LSB. So, with the sub-receiver turned off, VFOB does not track modes with VFOA as it did before the KRX3 installation. Can this be right? It seems like it should track along with VFOA as it did before. I am running the latest 2.46 beta firmware. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
The problem has been consistent across many configuration changes. TUN PWR is set at 100, though I tried it at several settings. Power-per-band is not active. To test, I use the built-in 2-tone generator that you can enable in the configuration menu. That is very handy for testing audio modes. CW provides full and measured power across all bands. On 6m through 20 meters there is full and measured power on voice and data modes. On 30m - 160m there is approximately 50 watts on voice and data modes. Measuring PEP with a scope at the input to the roofing filters with the 2-tone generator and TUNE selected shows approximatey 4V peak on the higher bands and approximately 2.25V peak on the low bands. I would be interested to know the details of other similar problems. Like I said, at this point I am awaiting and RSA for return to the main office for troubleshooting and repair. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
I have been having a similar problem on 30m through 160m. Output is fine on CW on all bands. On SSB, I am gettting only about 50 watts on those low bands. It appears to be hardware related, at least in my case. I have been doing a lot of remote troubleshooting with Gary Surrency, and at this point and awaiting my RSA for repair service. 73, John, WA6L williamsonr wrote: > > If this has previously been discussed - please forgive me. > This weekend ten meters was "open" (as much as it could be at the bottom > of a cycle) and the 10-10 contest gave me a great opportunity to try out > the 10 meter band on my recently completed K3 #1318(latest firmware). Re: [Elecraft] K3: new demo video with LP-PAN panadapter and powerSDR
The LP-Bridge software is now available, and that provides an extremely powerful environment for the K3 and the panadapter. For example, you can now run CW Skimmer and Writelog at the same time and have them share access to the K3. Another example is to use your logging program (I use DXLab) together with PowerSDR and your K3. The LP-Bridge software allows you to share the serial port and work seamlessly: Click on a signal in PowerSDR and it changes the frequency on both the K3 and the logging software. It's a new world out there! Re: [Elecraft] K3: Low power in RTTY
Thank you all for the suggestions. I still have the problem, but I have eliminated many of the variables. I tested by transmitting to a dummy load. I am measuring full power out on 20 meters and above, but only about 20 watts out (18 as measured on my wattmeter) on 30 meters and below. There is more to this than just RTTY. I get similar results on AM and SSB, once again transmitting into a dummy load. Only CW remains unaffected by the problem. I also installed the latest firmware (2.16) but that had no effect on the problem. It is beginning to sound to me like a maintenance/warranty issue and I will contact Elecraft directly. [Elecraft] K3: Low power in RTTY
I worked for a few hours during the NAQP RTTY contest this weekend and ran into a strange issue. On 15 and 20 I get full power out while running RTTY on the K3. On 40 and 80 I am limited to about 20 watts. I am running versions 2.02/1.77 of the firmware. I normally run in 'Data A' mode but tried 'AFSK A' as well. SWR was similar for all bands as was the software (Writelog & MMTTY). I looked at every control and configuration that I could think of that might be different betwen the bands but couldn't find anything. It may well be that I have a setting wrong but I cannot find it. To try and isolate the issue I left everything the same except the band button, and still ran into the problem. On CW, the power out is consistent between all bands. Any help would be appreciated. If this is a known firmware issue let me know and I will load one of the betas. Re: [Elecraft] K3 #1037 in IARU contest
Hi, Ed, Thanks for taking the time to write all this down. It is some great information. I can vouch for the fact that W0SD was all over the bands. We had you in the log several times. 73, John, WA6L (contest call was W6B) The IARU contest was the first chance to try SN#1037 out in more crowed band conditions. We were multi-op single transmitter so three persons used the radio and we were both CW and SSB. It was a serious effort with 1967 contacts in the 24 hours and over 1,000,000 points. All the operators did not have any trouble adapting to the radio having never used a K3 before. What a joy to have a radio that gets around a multitude of problems most radios have such as the FT-1000D 1000MP, TX-950SDX, Mark V, etc. in setting up for a contest. [Elecraft] K3: Noise Reduction (NR) in FM Mode
Yesterday I discovered by accident (or stupidity) that if you have Noise Reduction engaged and you go to FM mode, you do not receive any intelligible signals. You can tell that there is a signal, but you cannot make it out. I realize that there is no earthy reason to use NR in FM. But, if you have NR engaged on another mode and go to FM, you will be sorry. So, perhaps on the "we will get to it someday list" there could be a firmware change to disallow noise reduction in the FM mode? It wouldn't hurt . . . 73, John, WA6L -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3%3A--Noise-Reduction-%28NR%29-in-FM-Mode-tp17671258p17671258.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3: Sudden problem on 160M
I have had K3 S/N 611 on the air for over a month with no issues and a ton of fun. However, this week I have run into a strange problem, On the 160M band with CW selected, there are a number of "chunks" of the band that I can't transmit on. I can transmit on 1808 for example, but when I go to 1810 I get the "END" message when I try to transmit. Then, 1812 works FB. This goes up the band with perhaps a dozen small segments where I cannot transmit. It appears to be some sort of firmware issue, though I can't be 100% sure. So I guess my first question is whether this warrants a reset or a relaod of the firmware? Anyone run into this before? I think the biggest mistake is to worry about making mistakes. Just get out there and do it! Get on between 14.050 and 14.058 (or 7.050 - 7.058) and call CQ or answer a call. There are many slow-speed ops out there who are happy to talk to you and who will probably be making some mistakes themselves. Welcome, Ken! I wish I could tell you how long you will have to wait for your K3. The good news is that the lead time is steadily decreasing. What was once 9 months is rapidly approaching 4 months. Some day it will be a week! You are in an enviable position to be able to compare the K3 with the Orion II. That seems to be the one comparison that interests people most. Re: [Elecraft] K1 comments?
Hi, Bud, The K1 was my first Elecraft kit as well. In fact, it was the first kit I had built in over 20 years. The step-by-step instructions are simple, elegant, and effective. I did not have a single problem putting the kit together and had fun doing it. Tuning and adjustment were a breeze. The total construction time for me was about 30 hours. I owned the K1 for about a year and it got a lot of use. It was my radio during the Spartan Sprint contests and the ARCI homebrew contests. During Field Day 2007, I ran a solar/battery operation using the K1 and an inverted V from the local college track. It did extremely well and I had a blast. Eventually, I found that I was using the K1 more outside than in. So in the end I sold it and went with the KX1. I also had a K2 and now own the K3. The K1 is an excellent compromise between the performance of the K2 and the portability of the KX1. You can use it in place of either rig and do fine. I am sure you will have fun building and operating the K1. I know I did! 73, John, WA6L bud73 wrote: > > I recently received my first Elecraft kit a K1. > I don't see any postings relating to this rig. > Every posting seems to be about the new K3 and sometimes the K2. > Someone must be still interested in the K1 out there. > Are there any comments on this radio . for instance; how was it to > build, > is it fun to use, does it have a decent receiver, etc, etc. > Please tell me something about your experience with your K1. > > Thanks ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Configurations and Explanations
I can vouch that there is no reason to order both the 400 and 250 filters. When I first ordered my K3 on the phone, whomever I spoke with (and I can't remember) convinced me that these two would be the best combination for CW operation. In reality, there is very little difference between the two filters and in actual operation I don't see the need for the 250. A better combination would be the 1000 and 400. When calling CQ, I like to keep the BW set to around 800 to capture those signals that are not zero-beat. Once in a QSO or contest exchange, I can crank the BW down below 400 if needed. At least with the way I operate, the 1000/400 combo makes more sense. So, I plan to order the 1000 filter. Anyone want a 250 filter at a good discount? Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Omni VII.
Hi, Dave, I have owned several Ten-Tec rigs in the past and loved them all. I still have an Argonaut V that I use for QRP. I, like you, agonized over the K3 vs. Omni VII issue. I, like you, had ordered a K3 and came close to cancelling the order a dozen times. One day it was the K3, the next the Omni VII. I was having a heck of a time waiting for my delivery date. Well, with the K3 finally here, I can say that I am so, so glad that I waited. The K3 is the finest rig I have ever owned. Yes, I could be saying the same thing about my Omni VII if I had gone that route. But one thing that bothered me about the Omni is that you were limited on your options. Two filters and the ATU -- those are your options. The K3 can be customized to meet your needs, and can be changed fairly easily and cheaply. The ATU can be added any time. It is the same with the filters and the general coverage receiive. And when the KRX3 comes out, you have a second receiver that not only beats the pants off the Omni VII, but the Orion itself. The receiver on the K3 is incredibly quiet. Thise specs that you read about are actually noticeable when you are operating the rig. The QSK is the best I have heard -- if not better than Ten-Tec then certainly every bit as good. I have not done a feature-per-feature comparison between the two rigs, but I can't imagine a single feature that is lacking on the K3. So, my advice is to be patient a bit longer and go for the K3. I really don't think you will be disappointed. 73, John, WA6L Dave Agsten wrote: > > Let me start off by stating that I'm not looking for a > spec by spec comparison of these two radios. RE: [Elecraft] Straight Keys, Paddles and Bugs
How true that is. After years and years of using a paddle, I am learning to use a Bug. It is quite a challenge. But as you say, it puts the fun and the individuality back into CW. I think if I ever ran out of new things to learn, I would give up Ham Radio. But luckily there is no danger of that. Hope your new K3 arrives soon! Re: [Elecraft] Auto ATU for K3 + Amplifier
I use the LDG AT-1000pro with my K2 and Tokyo Hy-Power amp and it works out for me very well. You can check out the specs on their web site. It will handle up to 1 KW. 73, John, WA6L AD6XY - Mike wrote: > > Any advice on which automatic ATU would match well to a K3 with an > amplifier (solid state) to around the 500W level? > -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Auto-ATU-for-K3-%2B-Amplifier-tp16048136p16048617.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] VP6DX on 160 Elecraft Mojo
Congratulations, Julius! That pretty much parallels my own experience. I got them on 160M CW with my K2/100 into a top-loaded sloper. When they came back to me, I was not 100% sure whether they sent "CFM" or "QRM." Fortunately, it was the former, and I showed up in their online log. :-) 73, John, WA6L n2wn wrote: > > Worked VP6DX this morning on 160... > > I was running my K2/100 (about 90 watts to the tuner > due to some foldback issues) thru the KAT100 into a > 55' piece o' wire with a few radials, none any longer > than 40'. Re: [Elecraft] K1 power output question
I will echo what was already mentioned. Your measurements are about the same as what I get on my K1. 15 meters has always been a bit lower than the other bands. One other thing I have noticed is that the power readout on the K1 is not linear across the bands. I checked mine with a fairly accurate QRP wattmeter. If you align the power meter on the K1 so that it accurately measures 5 watts on 40 meters, it will read a little high on 15 meters and visa-versa. I set mine to be spot-on at 20 meters and it is close enough now on all the bands. Have fun!
