[Elecraft] K3- Diversity mode cw filter BW ??

2012-08-02 Thread callen1155

Hello folks.

I'm planning on ordering the second receiver for my K3 soon and have a
question.

When using the second receiver in 'diversity mode' and trying to dig out a
weak and fading cw signal, what
roofing filter do you find most effective?

I'm assuming in those conditions the narrower the better. I currently have a
400 Hz in my main receiver
and would prefer to just match it with a second 400 Hz for the sub RX.
Also, the 400 seems fine as far as crowded band conditions.

I understand some question this but based on my experience, my ears get a
boost of improved (SNR) noise
reduction when the 400 Hz kicks in (as compared to when i only had the 2.7
kHz and narrowed to 400 with
only the DSP). I can't help but wonder if having matching 200 Hz filters
would improve copy-ability in diversity mode over the 400 Hz ones?

So when using diversity mode for that weak cw signal, has anyone with both
the 200 Hz and 400 Hz filters
noticed any meaningful difference between the two?

thanks for any advice.

[Elecraft] P3 Noise Blanking feature ??

2012-07-09 Thread callen1155
Hello folks.

Does anyone know if Elecraft is planning on adding a 'Noise Blanking'
feature to the P3 (independent of the K3's existing NB) ?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - 6 meter beacon clicks followup ????

2012-06-11 Thread callen1155

Thanks Chris,

Great info.

FWIW, I just received an email from another elecraft reflector reader who
lives over nine miles away from my QTH. When he points his beam toward my
direction he hears the clicks (he does not hear them on the sides and back
of beam).

[Elecraft] OT - 6 meter beacon clicks followup ????

2012-06-11 Thread callen1155

Hello,

A while back I asked a question about receiving key clicks on 6 meters due
to a ham's beacon a mile away. Here's the link:
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/cw-clicking-td5011614.html

Honestly, those annoying, LOUD clicks make 6 meter operating impossible at
times (can't copy weak signals). Last night I was so fed up I just shut off
the radio and sent elecraft a message to cancel my 6 meter PR-6 pre-amp
order which was on back order.

So yesterday I wrote the owner of the beacon a very polite email and
explained how severe the problem was. Here is some of what I said:

"The reason I'm writing has to do with your beacon. Basically I can't get
away from it. I have key clicks in my receiver all the way from 50.000 cw up
past 50.170 SSB. I hear them regardless of the frequency I'm on. And I mean
loud annoying key clicks. I can literally copy your beacon's cw message when
I'm up in the SSB portion of the band. I receive the beacon at S9 +25 dB on
50.060 but my poor S meter never gets a rest from the beacon. My S meter
constantly jumps from S3 to S5 when the beacon transmits, even when I'm up
on the SSB frequencies. I can't even get an S meter reading on a weak signal
station due to your beacon acting on the S meter. As you could imagine, this
makes operating very difficult, very annoying, and for a truly weak signal
I'm trying to pull out of the noise floor, it makes it impossible. I have to
try and 'deafen' my K3 with excessive Noise Blanking and DSP settings etc to
the point where I can't hear the 'weak signals'. Both antennas experience
the same affect."

Before I post his entire response below my question is do I have a valid
complaint to take to the FCC or am I just wasting my time and need to learn
to be content :

His response:
"Hi Chuck AF4XK,
I am sorry that you are experiencing problems on your receive. I have
had the beacon on 6 meters in operation since 1992 and it is within
the 3 khz. band plan for beacons. I have had it checked on a
$25,000.00 spectrum analyzer to make sure it was where it needed to
be. All beacons have to be checked every year to check for
performance. This 6m beacon is centered on 50.060 with a constant null
on either end. Being a member of the Intercontinental Beacon
Commision, I have to make sure it is within specs to keep it up for
propagation. I have it send in 1 watt, 10 watts, and 45 watts for the
purpose of overseas propagation. Since all beacons are turned off
during ARRL contests. I usually turn this off according to the rules
of each contest, and it resumes operation after the contest is
complete.
I also enjoy the voice SSB portion of six, and PSK31 but since the
beacon is located at this location, I am receiving the same clicking
and annoying spread that you are getting and more. So when contests
are going on, I jump on six for the short time I can use it also. I
have tried to find a site to move it so it won't interfere with the
hams in this area. But I haven't found one as of yet. Still looking
though. Don ( N8DDK ) and Jack ( N6UYB ) down the street less than 1/4
mile, are both having the same problem you are having with the band
wipe out. And both are glad when it is turned off during contests. I
wish that there is something I could do to prevent this, but you are
not alone. Being it runs 24/7 for the watchers of propagation for
hams, and is totally funded by me for this purpose, this is my
donation to the ham community. If you know of a location that I could
move it to and not interfere with any other hams that wants to operate
on six meter, let me know. I would be glad to move it.
Richard --- KD4NMI/B"

Is this in the spirit of amateur radio??

One thing further, I just purchased a IC-910H for satellite operation (sorry
elecraft, i wanted to give you the business but ...) and now I'm VERY
CONCERNED about his 2 meter beacon on 144.300

Thanks for any further advice.

[Elecraft] K3 and satellites

2012-05-31 Thread callen1155

Hello folks,

I've been googling (and checking the elecraft reflector) the K3's satellite
capabilities (with transverters).

>From what i've been able to determine it WONT work so due to it's inability
to provided cross-band full duplex. (i.e. xtmit on 2 meters and hear myself
on 440 or similiar).

But I've also read where it was' possible' or in the design works or ?

So, could someone please update me as to whether the K3 is satellite capable
(is anyone here using it) and can provide full duplex operation? (Or if mods
are available to do so?)

thanks for any info.

Re: [Elecraft] need some roofing filter advice?

2011-07-15 Thread callen1155

Thanks for all the comments gentlemen.

Regarding the RX antenna, I've been reading lots lately on the subject
trying to figure what will work given my pathetic QTH space limitions and
HOA restrictions.
Quite a challenge indeed. In fact, more of a challenge than I'd like. I may
have to be content with WAS on 80m rather than true dx'ing on 160. Time will
tell.

Regarding contesting, as I reflect on my antenna situation I may have to
take contesting more seriously and participate just to get some decent
contacts and increase the qso count on 80/160. Odds are probably greater
that I'll snag some real dx during those events. Living rear Raleigh, I'd
be surprised if some big signal guys aren't near me that are contesters. So
maybe a narrower filter is the way to go?

And as far as roofing filters, it would be nice if there was a questionairre
with 50 questions that would just spit out the recommended configuration
based on the answers. But that's dreaming. I might just have to flip a
three sided coin.

But I do appreciate all the feedback.

[Elecraft] need some roofing filter advice?

2011-07-13 Thread callen1155

Sorry to do this to you guys but .

I need some roofing filter advice:)

Currently I only have the stock 2.7K filter and it has worked fine for
casual rag chewing and some dx'ing.
I've been operating my K3 for over a year and it seems I don't have any
strong signals near me creating problems.

Over time my interests have changed and now I'm pursuing primarily cw dx'ing
on 160 and 80 (lots of weak signals).

I'm attempting to fill out my 'elecraft cart' to purchase the second
receiver and am stuck on the filter choices.

I can't afford lots of roofing filters so I'm thinking of going with one cw
filter on both main and sub (for diversity receive capability).

It seems the 250 or 200 may be too limited in application so given the above
would you suggest the 400 Hz 8 pole or the matching 500 Hz 5 pole filters?

thanks for any advice.

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 vs APF on weak signals ??

2011-07-12 Thread callen1155
Thanks for the responses but I'm at a loss as to why the question is
confusing. I'm trying to determine the most efficient method to hear
weak/fading cw signals.

I have read on here many times where folks brag on the 2nd receivers'
ability to overcome fading band conditions via diversity receive using
complementing antennas. I have read and experienced the benefit of APF under
those same band conditions as well.

I understand diversity receive and APF go about it two totally different
ways but the end result is an improved ability to hear weak/fading signals.

My question is simply, under weak/fading band conditions when you're
straining to copy the cw sig (assuming you have both APF and diversity
receive to choose from), which would you choose to improve your copy and
make the contact?

thanks again.

[Elecraft] KRX3 vs APF on weak signals ??

2011-07-12 Thread callen1155
Hello folks.

I operate cw 98% of the time.
After 'rag chewing' for several years I'm becoming more interested in
DX'ing. Also I'm eager to try my luck on 160 meters despite my QTH and
antenna restrictions.

I've been considering purchasing the KRX3 (second receiver) for a year or
more.

However with the recent firmware upgrades and now the APF (audio peaking
filter) feature on the standard K3 I'm wondering if the second receivers
'diversity receive' capability would be that much superior to the APF for
weak/fading signals?

(My results vary using the APF; abort 1/3 of the time it helps, 1/3 of the
time I get 'clearer' copy with very narrow DSP bandwidth and no APF... the
final 1/3 is a no copy either way.)

If the APF approaches the effectiveness of the KRX3 on weak/fading sigs I
may just go for a P3 instead.

Thanks for any advice.

[Elecraft] K3 with Samlex PS ??

2010-10-15 Thread callen1155

Hello guys.

After using a battery for 9 months with my K3/100 I need to spend some money
and get a power supply. I've decided on the Samlex 1235 which seems to get
good reviews. The question I'd like to ask has to do with whether you'd
recommend the 'Metered' version or not (has both V and I analog meters)?
I've read in a few places where (on some units) the meter's may cause some
addition RFI. Not a lot of difference in price so that's not an issue. Any
Samlex owners care to comment?

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: [Elecraft] K3- cw- pc program problems??

2010-06-15 Thread callen1155

Thanks for the comments guys. I had a chance to play with this a bit more
and am now able to both xmit and receive cw using both Fldigi and HRD5.0.

Problem was I had the K3 set for AFSK rather than DATA A. Changing to DATA A
allowed me to transmit via the PC sound card and VOX.

Interesting observation was as I tried the various data modes for the best
sounding received cw signal (comparable to actual cw mode) I thought PSK D
was stronger and more defined to listen to.
Listening to cw via DATA A was weaker and less defined but still seemed to
provide decent decode by the software.

Thanks again.

[Elecraft] K3- cw- pc program problems??

the line-in/line-out jacks on the K3 for the audio and the fldigi program on

The decode works decent when the k3 mode is set as CW but I can't transmit
on that mode. But when I change the K3 mode to DATA, I can transmit fine but
the receive/decode is garbage.

Anyone have the above working?. what PC program works?. K3 in CW or
DATA? Any other advice??

[Elecraft] cw 'clicking' ??

2010-05-02 Thread callen1155

Interesting post Bill, and thanks for the url.

I also enjoy listening to SWBC. I don't have the K3 general coverage module
nor the 6k filter. I listen to SWBC with my Radio Shack DX-394 receiver.
I've thought about using the K3 for SWLing. I wonder how the K3 would
perform compared to the DX-394?

Also, I'm currently using a non-resonant dipole of about 200 ft in length.
I switch this back and forth between the K3 (with internal ATU) and the
DX-394 (kind of a pain).
How does your dedicated SWL antenna differ?

And lastly, do you use an antenna tuner with you K3 SWBC listening?

Thanks and hope you don't mind the questions.

[Elecraft] Second receiver options ??

2010-04-08 Thread callen1155

Hello guys.

I've been using my K3 about a month now and really enjoying it. Since I have
a keen interest in DXing and pulling out weak signals (DXing cw & ragchewing
cw) I'm starting to think about adding the KRX3 second receiver although I
understand that LP-PAN also provides second receiver capability.

I also understand that true K3 'diversity reception' greatly aids weak sig
copy and would only be available with the KRX3 receiver but not with LP-PAN.

Additionally, I use an older, slower desktop for playing radio and would
probably need to a better pc if i go the LP-PAN route, plus the soundcard,
and then the unit itself.

So if you had enough funds for either the KRX3 second receiver or the LPAN
which would you choose. I'm leaning toward the KRX3 but wanted to get the
experts' take on this as well.

Seems that the visual aspect of LP-PAN, while appealing, would be less
beneficial basd on my operating than the diversity reception.

Is that making sense?

thanks and 73.

Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on internal vs external ATU for K3

2010-02-24 Thread callen1155

Thanks guys for all the info.

I have one other question about the ATU use with two antennas.

Say I have two antennas connected to the ATU , one is a dipole (non
resonant- need the ATU to 'match') and the other antenna is a Hustler BTV6
(which i've just purchase having never used a vertical) which is supposedly
resonant across all it's operating bands. So, i assume I don't really need
to use the ATU 'tune/match' functionality for the Hustler (it's just
providing the connector).

So can i have the ATU 'activated' for the dipole antenna (antenna A) but
non-activated for the hustler (ant B)? Question would apply to both the K3
and K2 ATU's.

Thanks so much for all the help.

[Elecraft] Determining best roofing filter with DSP??

2010-02-24 Thread callen1155

Hello guys.

Sorry about all the questions but I think this is the last one before I
press the "buy" button for a K3.

Once again a question about cw roofing filters.

I am initially ordering the K3 without the 2nd receiver but do plan on
getting one within a year.

That said, and knowing it's best to have 'matching roofing filters' for both
receivers, even after all the reading I still have no idea what would be the
best roofing filter to get. It seems to be such an individual choice.
Ideally, I'd prefer to purchase only one filter (or one for each receiver)
and want to make the best filter choice for my operating.

So if I order the K3 with no roofing filters, can I determine from operating
with just the DSP which cw roofing filter would be the optimal one for me.

Or is the above an exercise in futility and I just need to order say a 400
and see how that does before I'll know?
But then again I guess it wouldn't be 'matched'' when I get one for the
second receiver.

Too many decisions!

thanks again.

[Elecraft] K3/100 -Second floor- no RF ground ??

2010-02-24 Thread callen1155

Hello guys,

I'm planning on purchasing a K3/100 but am concerned about my second floor
shack and RF problems.

First of all:
1) I don't have an RF ground (don't really want to drill thru the house and
siding for the ground strap) and

2) my antenna is a semi-indoor/attic dipole (HOA).
I'm running a coax from the second floor radio to the attic where i attach
to a dipole (no balun) and the dipole runs the length of the house each way
and out the eaves where both wires run out about 35 yards to the trees.

I'm using my K2/15 and don't have problems but previously with my old Knwd
TS 830 at about 100 watts the vibroplex bug would 'bite' me. I'd also get
some RFI on the TV (didn't try any filters to prevent it).

I know both of the above arrangements are potential sources for RF problems.
What I don't know is whether RF problems (both the 'burn' and RFI) are radio
related; i.e. are some radios more prone cause issues and how is the K3/100
in this regard as compared to the TS 830? (this may be a non-question-- i
just don't have enough experience with different radios to know).

So I'm wonder if any of you operate a K3/100 from a second floor shack, with
no RF ground, (guess it's too much to ask about a semi-indoor antenna) and
if you're experiencing RF problems?

Also, if I experience RF problems with the K3 do any you have any experience
with an "Artificial RF Ground" such as the MFJ-931?

Sorry about being long winded.

Hope I'm not 'destined' to order a K3/10 instead.

thanks again.

Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on internal vs external ATU for K3

Still confused guys on the Re-Tune issue. So on my coax fed dipole, if I
press ATU TUNE at 7.030, wouldn't that be enough to tune the 7.000 thru
7.060 freq range without retuning whenever I 'band switch' back to 40 meters
and operate in the above cw range?

Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on internal vs external ATU for K3

2010-02-24 Thread callen1155

Steve,

You stated " Every time you change bands, you must push the ATU Tune
button."

If that's true then I have been operating my K2 ATU incorrectly but it seems
to work fine the way I've been doing it. Initially, or after any change, I
run thru the bands tuned to the cw portion and hit the ATU Tune button to
obtain close to a 1 to 1 swr. Once that's done I was under the impression
that the internal memory kept that setting stored and I didn't need to
re-tune (i.e. repress the ATU Tune button) until a change was made to the
system. I may go for several weeks without any changes.

So do you really need to re-tune EVERYTIME you change bands?

thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on internal vs external ATU for K3

2010-02-24 Thread callen1155

Thanks guys. You do make a strong case for the internal unit. My internal
unit on my K2 (15 watts) works great.

My dipole is coax fed - U shaped, no balun, running thru attic and out eaves
to back of yard. My shack is on the 2nd floor (no RF ground)

I've never used an external ATU and was thinking it would automatically pick
up on a band change and adjust. However, it sounds like that's incorrect and
the band change would have to be entered in both the radio and the tuner. I
just started using Ham Radio Deluxe and that 'one click' band change is
nice.

But one of the reasons I was considering the external unit was they provide
a nice visual display of both the SWR and the output power level. So with
the internal ATU do you guys use a separate SWR/Power meter (and I guess a
dummy load would generally be included)?

thanks.

[Elecraft] Thoughts on internal vs external ATU for K3

2010-02-24 Thread callen1155

Hello guys.

Narrowing down the options I 'need' in a K3.

Regarding an internal vs external ATU:

If you were going to operate your K3 at 100 watts (no plans for an
amplifier), radio to be used only at home (no portable operating), and one
of your antennas was a dipole that can be tuned over all bands with an ATU,
would you opt for the K3 internal ATU or purchase an external one?

I see advantages both ways and am curious how most of you would decide on
this.

Thanks for any advice.

understand what the KTCX03 is for.

This radio will be on my desk at home and used generally an hour a day
during the week and possibly several hours a day on weekends. I primarily
operate cw.

How desirable/necessary is this option in my environment and what is the
purpose of the KTCX03?

[Elecraft] K3, headphones, and audio limiting??

2010-02-22 Thread callen1155

Hello folks.

I was operating yesterday with my K2 using headphones. I really prefer
headphones for weak sigs and operating in general but on two occasions
yesterday my ears were blasted due to a strong nearby signal. I finally
resorted to an external speaker even though can't hear with that nearly as
well (I already have greatly impaired hearing).

So two questions:

1. Does the K3 have an 'audio limiter' that would prevent the above
situation and does it work well?

2. This weekend was really my first contest so how does one approach such an
event if you operate a rig (such as a K2) where in a flash the volume levels
can vary greatly? Do you take the chance and use the headphones? Frankly,
I'm very hesitant now to use the headphone with the K2 at any time.

thanks.

You could if you take care not to dumpt RF into the K2. You cannot do
diversity receive however since both receivers must be phase-locked to the same
frequency.
