[Elecraft] KXPA100: Manual antenna switching and output power limit questions

2013-06-20 Thread edevelope...@yahoo.com
Hi All,

I searched Nabble and did not find these questions about the KXPA100 answered,
so apologies in advance if they have been asked/answered previously.

1. If one has the KXAT100 ATU option installed, and is using the KXPA100 with
an exciter other than the KX3 gasp, is manual antenna switching accomplished
with a long press of the ATU TUNE button, as appears to be so from the legend
on the control panel, or some other way?

(Full disclosure: I have an IC-703+ with the W4RT dual Collins filter kit
installed that unfortunately I get to use seldom enough that I can't justify
replacing with a KX3 at this time.)

2. Does the KXPA100 have any limitation on recommended power output when using
high duty cycle digital modes such as RTTY, JT65, PSK?

Thanks in advance and 73 de Tyler, KC2LST

Re: [Elecraft] [k3] Wayne/Lyle is it possible? S meter (Mike Rodgers)

2012-08-30 Thread edevelope...@yahoo.com
Hi Mike,

Yes - it is possible to do as you suggest - use the absolute S-Meter mode. For
a long time I resisted switching to absolute mode for no good reason other than
not wanting to deviate from a default setting.

Because I usually keep RF gain at about the 1 o'clock position, for a long time
I dithered along with S-Meter readings that were uncorrected for RF gain
setting.

A month or two ago I switched to absolute mode and have never looked back.
Recommended. Someone recently suggested the absolute mode be made the default
and I agree.

This is done via the CONFIG: SMTR MD setting and is further described on page
51 of the current K3 Owner's Manual.

Is it possible to make the s meter unaffected by rf gain. I suppose it's not.

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset

2012-02-17 Thread edevelope...@yahoo.com
For those outside the U.S who would like to purchase a Yamaha CM500 headset,
BH does ship internationally with a few exceptions. See their “Destinations”
page here for particulars:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/HelpCenter/Shipping.jsp#shippingDest

I purchased a CM500 from them several months ago. Since I’m only 30 miles away
from them it got here in a flash. On past purchases from them of other small
items I have been satisfied as well. On the CM500, theirs was the best price I
could find.

I’m definitely not a headset guy – I much prefer the open-air speaker
environment when possible. Nevertheless, I like this headset overall. It is
very comfortable to wear for an extended period of time, even for those with
above-average hat sizes. I have used it a couple of times in phone contests.

I tried, but didn’t at all care for VOX operation. I find that there is little
acoustic isolation between the microphone stalk and the ear cup to which it is
attached, so when you move around, the noises that the headset itself creates
trigger the VOX. So I now use a footswitch and that works beautifully. No
unwanted noise triggering and no having the VOX drop during a breath from a
long contest exchange. With the footswitch, VOX also does not get triggered
when the XYL remarks “ANOTHER rare DX station that you must work right now?!”
The sound quality of the speakers in the set is just fine and the mic is hot,
so no worries about inadequacy in producing appropriate voice level to the K3.

The usual disclaimers apply – I have nothing to do with BH other than being a
satisfied customer.

[Elecraft] Rusting Screws

2011-12-09 Thread edevelope...@yahoo.com
Phil, a big thanks to you for this information!

I do have stainless screws in my K3, but the black coating on several of them
wasn't good from the beginning, and now 18 months later they have a
pure-stainless appearance, though the rig has never left my NJ QTH. It was
mildly bothersome as a purely cosmetic issue, but not worth pestering Elecraft
about, given their incomparable service to me on other items.

So I can now get 100 at a reasonable cost and replace those few and also
stainless-ize my P3.

I also discovered a number of other hard-to-find items at McMaster-Carr, too.
My 1965-vintage home has some zinc/steel bridle rings on the siding that now
route CATV coax, and I looked everywhere for these as I wanted more of them.
These have a wood-screw end and a split ring that makes it easy to put coax
into and take the coax out of them.

Lo and behold, 1-inch bridle rings at McMaster-Carr, 3/16 X 1 Length Wood
Screw Thread, 1 Ring ID, packs of 10, $4.68/pack, part number 1706T31. They
have larger sizes too and are available with or without plastic inserts.

I also found a constant-tension t-bolt hose clamp for my weedeater there, but
that's another story.

Add me to the list of those who agree that stainless hardware should become
standard issue as is befitting of all of the fine Elecraft gear.

FWIW - I bought #4x1/4 SS black-oxide covered screws from McMaster Carr.
Price is $3.91/100. Part number 96640A054. I use them on my K3 and KPA500.
