Re: [Elecraft] K3 Assembly
Ken, you will need to procure your anti-static mat and wrist strap from a separate source. 73 Ed, N0EHQ Is the kit sent with an antistatic mat and ground wrist band, or should the buyer purchase these items elsewhere? [Elecraft] List Membership Second Time Around
Hello everyone. Sorry to take up bandwidth but maybe someone can help my mentally limited brain understand the excessive bounce notices and what they imply. A few months back I kept getting excessive bounce notices and had to keep re-enabling my membership. Eventually the membership was cancelled. So when I see these notices what should I be doing or not doing. I sent an e-mail to Elecraft a few months back but didn't get a response as everyone there is pretty darn busy. Thanks in advance. 73 de Ed N0EHQ; patiently waiting for my K3. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K2 #4595 - Almost Dead
I forgot to power down my K2 last night before I went to bed. Well this morning I noticed the display was blank and no audio was coming from the speakers. The only sign of life is a slight pop from the speaker when powering the K2 back to ON with either the external supply or the internal battery. I haven't started trouble shooting yet but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this condition. My K2 is a 10 watt version with everything but the noise blanker installed and powered by 14.2 volts as has been suggested to keep the internal battery charged. The rig has worked flawlessly aver the past 2 1/2 years. I guess in the short term I'll have to use my Argo V until my K3 arrives hopefully early August. 73 de Ed N0EHQ, K2 #4595 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K2 #4595 - (was Almost Dead) Head Hanging in Shame
Well Bill, remember that word ASSUME? If you ASSUME you make an ASS out of U and ME? After Don's reply I checked thebattery switch and then started doing voltage checks and couldn't get voltage anywhere. I put the top back on and again and hit the power switch and I could get a slight pop sound from the speaker. Then I looked up and my eyes fell upon the fuse holder. It couldn't be I thought. Checked the 5 amp fuse and it was blown. Replaced the fuse and all is well. 73 de Ed N0EHQ Don't forget to shut off the back panel switch like I didn't. Sounds like the battery didn't get power from the outboard supply to recharge it. Been there done that. Re: [Elecraft] K2 qso's with a IC-703Plus?
Fred, check out the IC703 Yahoo group. There is lots of discussion regarding SSB and CW operation there. I own both the K2 and the 703 and like both of them as both fit different needs for me. 73 de Ed N0EHQ This retiree, while he awaits some future K3 kit - picked up a used IC-703Plus QRP rig. Has any K2 qrp'ers - worked hams with IC-703's. Do they perform OK, and did they seem reliable for CW or and SSB? Sorry for the bandwidth - but when K3 hits the counter, I'll be in line. Re: [Elecraft] Desoldering tool?
It's the Solder Popper model 12-2157 from GC Tools. It runs in the $36.00 range depending upon retailer. I've used it on my K2 kit and found by wetting the tip with solder for good heat transfer the unit seems to work well enough. It maybe doesn't work quite as well as the Hakko 808 but for the casual builder it should be sufficient. I was even able to tin toroid leads with it with a little practice. The unit comes apart easily for cleaning and/or maintenance. Re: [Elecraft] USB to Serial Stick
Roy FYI, I use a Keyspan serial to USB adapter and have had good luck with it. I had previously bought a Dynex adapter from Best Buy that worked with most everthing other than Ham Hadio Deluxe. HRD works the comm port pretty hard and the Dynex adapter apparently couldn't keep up. West Mountain Radio promotes the Iogear adapter for their Rigblaster interfaces. I have seen the Iogear adapters at Walmart for less than $30.00. 73 de Ed N0EHQ Can someone tell me where I can get one of these USB to serial sticks that has been mentioned on this reflector? I have had a really bad experience with a serial adapter cable. It seems to depend on which brand of serial adapter cable you use as to whether it will work or not. Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] High Altitude Solder
When using high altitude solder it is critical to use a left handed soldering station otherwise the overall transceiver efficency is severely degraded. Happy building. 73 de N0EHQ I plan to do a lot of mountaintopping in the next few years and will be assembling a K1 for this specific use. I need to locate a good source for MILSPEC high altitude solder that meets Elecraft's specifications and will not void the warranty. The reported 22% increase in equipment efficiency will make the extra expense worthwhile. Does anybody know of a vendor that still sells it? Are there any special precautions or procedures for using this solder? Lynn N7CFO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Computer control issues - unreliable firmware?
I had the same issue with HRD and it was the USB serial adapter. The one I was using had a transfer speed of 115 mbps which apparently wasn't sufficient. Bought a Keyspan adapter with a transfer rate of 220 mbps and all works well. I did have to go into the device manager and make a few changes to the port settings for the Keyspan. Saw an Iogear adapter at WalMart for I think it was $29.00 that had a transfer rate of 200 mbps and appear to work well from accounts I've read. 73, Ed N0EHQ I recently completed my K2. I assume that it has the very latest firmware. Although it works fine with k2Remote, it doesn't work reliably with any third-party software that I've tried. I've tried the latest version of dxLab commander, HamRadioDelux, and even purchased HamStationExtreme. Comander won't even connect with the K2. HRD keeps stalling when updating the frequency display. The current release of HSE doesn't appear to work. I'm waiting for an update. As far as I can tell from research I've been able to do, there are firmware problems in the K2 that make the interface unreliable. Elecraft says they don't have any room in their program space to add any flow control. Does anyone have any information about this problem or comments about other control software? [Elecraft] CSI88 Desoldering Tool
Has anyone had experience with the CSI88 desoldering tool from Circuit Specialists Inc.? It appears similar but not necessarily comparable in concept to the Hakko 808.
