Re: [Elecraft] CK722 transistor
I bought my first, 3 of them from Allied Radio in the late '50s. I made a three stage IF strip amplifier with them. As I remember, they were packaged in thin plastic tubes with a plastic cork, skinny, taller than they were wide and with long leads...maybe an inch long. They were a buck each. Memories. The IF amp worked...pretty well... - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/CK722-transistor-tp6408893p6764632.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] CK722 transistor
My first power transistor was a 2N35. We had to check them out from the EE storeroom for the lab of an EE course at the U of Illinois, Urbana. I forget what the exercise was about, it went well, but I mostly remember the plastic box the transistor came in and the sheet I had to sign for it. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/CK722-transistor-tp6408893p6764658.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500 operating current values...
Just checking... I get about 7.6 A at about 62 volts when on 75M putting out about 350 watts. I get about 0.4 A keyed with no rf input. Is that about right? Just wondering if these are normal values. A friend on 75M says he can detect something...on my voice sometimes...when doing about 350 watts with 15 watts input. He cannot hear any issues barefoot. No one else in the QSO can hear anything but clean signal. I thought maybe just a tiny bit of rf in the audio...or morning voice. But the amp works flawlessly. About 25 watts takes it to 500 watts output, etc. I am at the high tap for high line voltage. Set to 120 vac...and at 500 watts output it shows right about 60 supply volts. Just wondering if maybe he has 4-1000 prejudice against solid state linears...:) - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-operating-current-values-tp6751150p6751150.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Turning ON KPA500 with K3?
There is a line from the aux cable that will switch on and switch off...with a pulse low. But how to make the K3 send the pulse? Pin #8...but it, on the K3 aux connector is used to turn on the K3 with a pulse low. I think it, on the K3, comes from an output/input line from an open drain fet driven by a clock/calendar chip...so...and also I guess somehow from the POWER button on the K3 front panel to the MCU. AND...I guess if pin #8 were not cut off on the aux 25pin cable Elecraft sent, then turning on the K3 would turn on the KPA500...what if they got out of sync?...then turning on the K3 would turn off the KPA500...and turning off the K3 would turn on the KPA500...hmmm...or is that not a problem? - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Turning-ON-KPA500-with-K3-tp6734902p6735630.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Turning ON KPA500 with K3?
Yes that makes sense. The pin #8 is power on for the K3, but power off on the K3 does not send a pulse to the pin now that I understand more about it. Incidentally, to remotely turn off the K3, you have to send a PS0 to the RS232 port. Maybe that's why they cut the pin off...since the function wouldn't be that useful and couldn't be disabled with CONFIG (I guess). But I think I would like the option...an inline switch on my part would suffice for disabling the feature. Something to think about. Thanks for the info. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Turning-ON-KPA500-with-K3-tp6734902p6736203.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Turning ON KPA500 with K3?
Probably a simple circuit using the 12 volts on output would be the best approach to provide a neg pulse to the pin #8 to the KPA500 for both power on and power off. Also the pin #7 outputs a logic 5 volts when the K3 is turned on...another possibility. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Turning-ON-KPA500-with-K3-tp6734902p6736226.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Turning ON KPA500 with K3?
Ha. Ok on that...I wouldn't think of complaining about something like that. I guess you don't have to elaborate, but you have peaked my interest. Chuck, There was a good engineering reason for cutting pin #8 in the cable between the K3 and the KPA500. Use that connection at your own peril. You may report strange happenings, but please do not complain about them. 73, Don W3FPR - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Turning-ON-KPA500-with-K3-tp6734902p6736241.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500 Hum PC Speakers.
The hum is due to magnetic field in close proximity of the speaker...usually. Sometimes RF gets into them usually on the power cord. Ferrite fixes this, moving the speakers fixes the former. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Serial Port Connections on KPA500
So...in a nutshell...the PC serial port is connected to the P3 which is connected to the K3. This allows both to be updated from the PC utility programs, remote, etc. The KPA500 PC DB9 is connected to another different PC serial port for PC updating, remote, etc. The KPA500 XCVR DB9 can be connected to a transceiver (like a Kenwood with serial band data) for band data, etc. The KPA500 AUX (VGA type 15 pin connector) can be connected to the K3 for band data, etc. Thanks. [Elecraft] KPA500 on 240 VAC in the USA?
Anybody using 240 VAC in the US? So it uses the same connector on the amp, but you have to fit a different plug to mate with your 240VAC/20A wall socket? Looks like this -! ...only without the dot.
