[Elecraft] K4 RX dynamic range

2019-06-04 Thread mark roz via Elecraft
Before putting my money up front for the first run of K4D I need to know what
is the dynamic range
of the K4D RX at 2kHz spacing. K3 is 105 dB and K4D? If it is 20dB lower than
K3 than it would be 85dB-correct?

[Elecraft] KAT500 and K3 Powering sequence

2013-03-06 Thread mark roz
On Monday I have contacted support at Elecraft but no answer.
So, does anybody know if KAT500 MUST be turned ON FIRST and than K3 - otherwise
K3 will not initialize correctly
(with DB15 cable connected as it should). Is this still the case? I don’t like
it as I have other antennas that will not be
connected to KTA500. I will not always need KTA500 to be on line. This just
doesn’t make sense.
KAT500 will be connected to pos. 1 of the antenna switch.
Could  firmware be changed in order to correct that?
Thanks, Mark

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 and K3 Powering sequence

2013-03-06 Thread mark roz
George,
Thanks for your suggestion. That will work. For some reason I was under
impression
that I would have to TURN ON the KAT500 first. My KAT500 will be also connected
to 12V buss.
My interpretation of applying power was wrong. I  just received  my KAT500
KIT.
Thanks again :)
Mark WQ7X

Mark,
My understanding from the manual is that the KAT500 must be on when the K3
is turned on for the Aux connection to work properly.
In my shack this is accomplished by connecting the KAT500 directly to the 12
volt buss; that way it is already on when I turn the K3 on. This works well
for me.
Probable doesn't matters if you elect to not use the Aux cable connection.

[Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?

2012-03-16 Thread mark roz
Interesting. I have build 600W amp with four Motorola MRF150 transistors and I
can easily
get 600W output with 7W input. This was tested with input attenuator removed.
Are those Mosfets in KPA500 that much different?
I also would like to purchase the KPA500 but only if I could get 15 dB gain.
It would be great to drive KPA500 with KX3 10W and get around 300W output power.
I’m pretty sure that KPA500 has some form of attenuator at the input.
Mark WQ7X

But I would buy a second KPA500 in a heartbeat if I knew I could modify it for
10 watts drive for full output! I think you're being optimistic about full
output with 10W drive.

The VRF-2933 is rated for 23 dB gain (typical). With perhaps 1 dB loss
in the low pass filter, a dB or so in the output transformer, roughly 3
dB in feedback to improve linearity one dB in the input transformer,
bias decoupling, gate balancing, and two dB in the input matching comes
very close to the roughly 15 dB gain limit in the US regulations.

Some of those values are based on application notes from Motorola,
MicroSemi and APT for similar MOSFET designs while some values are
from Elecraft designers. In any case, the inescapable conclusion is
that there is no magic modification to get the additional 2 - 3 dB
of gain necessary to get 600W with 10W of driver from the KPA-500.

[Elecraft] Fw: KPA-500 high gain modification?

2012-03-16 Thread mark roz
Geoff,
You would need more like 35W amp.
Mark WQ7X

Olli,

Would adding a low gain broadband linear amplifier between the KPA500's
input and the 10 watt driver be a useful alternative to modifying the
KPA500?

I assume that during receive this amplifier would have to be bypassed.

[Elecraft] New 3.41 IMPROVED RX LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE in AM/SSB/CW MODES

2009-10-07 Thread mark roz
To me there is no difference between 3.30 and 3.41. Same low freq. response.
However, for my needs it is OK. Yes, I'm adjusting shift and width.

There is one problem with the new 3.41- the DSP high pitch noise level is
higher (3dB or so) than with 3.30.
Condition: RF gain at 12 o'clock    AF set for normal listening level with good
headphones.
Antenna switch is being used to ground the antenna. Listen  to the band noise
on 20 or 17m and ground the antenna. Now compare internal DSP noise to band
noise by using antenna switch
Do the above with 3.30 and than 3.41. My K3  SN is above 3000.
I like 3.30  and I'm hoping that DSP gain distribution/noise level in future
firmware will be the same as in 3.30.
There is also difference in DSP gain between 3.30 and 3.41.

[Elecraft] K3 huge noise

2009-08-30 Thread mark roz
Almost lost my hearing.
Loaded 3.27A. NR engaged. F1-1. VFO A CW on 40m. VFO B SSB 40m. AGC ON. Width
250Hz cw. 2.7 ssb.
Now switched from CW to SSB portion of 40m by pushing A/B - horrible noise of
very high
amplitude  on speaker or headphones. Turned down the volume to min. and in
few few seconds
it stopped. Than again the same thing happened 70% of the time.
This only happens if NR is engaged on A and B VFO and while switching from A to
B.
Just did it again-now on the internal speaker. Wow!! it is loud. Will not use
NR for now.
Anybody else can duplicate this??

Beside that I like my new K3 a lot. This is my second K3.

We've just completed the most extensive K3 firmware
 update ever. The
full list of changes is provided below.

*** NOTE *** You must use the latest version of our
 firmware loader
(K3 Utility rev 1.1.4.1) or else you won't be able to
 load all
components of the upgrade. It's available on our K3
 software page,
 along with release notes:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

As usual, if you have any difficulty with the firmware
 upgrade, send
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both Lyle, KK7P (DSP
 firmware) and
myself (MCU firmware) will be closely monitoring your
 results in case
 further tweaking is required.

I'd also like to thank all of our K3 customers for
 their patience. This
firmware release was delayed several times due to testing,
 engineering
staff vacations, etc. Our field testers have been pounding
 on interim
releases for weeks (thanks, guys). I hope you'll find
 it worth the
 wait!

 73,
 Wayne, N6KR

 * * *

 MCU 1.87 / DSP 1.69, 5-3-08

This release includes improvements in all areas. Changes
 are
 categorized below.

NEW FEATURES:

* CW KEYING IN SSB MODES: While in SSB modes, you can
 now send CW
 without
changing modes or using an offset. The other station
 will hear the
 signal at your CW pitch.
This is especially useful on VHF bands when SSB
 signals can’t be
 copied.
To enable this feature, go into CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap
 ‘1’ until
 you see SSB +CW.

* FM MODE ADDED: Requires FM filter installed in slot
 FL1. Those not
 needing
FM mode can set CONFIG:FM MODE to OFF. To set up a
 repeater offset:
 Use the
CONFIG:RPT OFS menu entry, then hold ALT to select
 -/+/simplex (-/+
 appear under
the FM mode icon). To set up tone encode: hold PITCH,
 then rotate
 VFO B to select
PL TONE or PL OFF, and rotate VFO A to select the
 desired CTCSS
 tone. (When
PL TONE is on, a letter ‘T’ will appear near the
 FM mode icon.)
 Repeater offsets and
  PL tones are stored per-band/per-memory.

* VARIABLE AMP KEYING DELAY: Added CONFIG:TX DLY menu
 entry, which
sets the time from KEY OUT jack (active low) to first
 RF in 1-ms
steps, from 8 to 20 ms.
To minimize loss of QSK speed, use the shortest delay
 that works
 with your amp.
Most will work with the default (minimum) setting of 8
 ms.

* LINE OUT ALLOWS RX/TX AUDIO RECORDING: Normally,
 CONFIG:LIN OUT
 sets a
  fixed-level, receive-only output for main/sub (L/R),
 compatible
 with digital modes. Tapping
'1' switches LIN OUT to =PHONES, where the
 line outputs match
 headphone audio,
audio level controlled by AF/SUB gain controls, and
 both RX and TX
 audio available.

* SIMULTANEOUS USE OF MIC AND LINE IN: If the
 MAIN:MIC+LIN menu
 entry is set to
ON, and MIC SEL = FP or RP, the present mic OR line in
 can be used
 for transmit audio.
NOTE: Setting MIC SEL to LINE overrides the MIC+LIN
 menu entry (its
 parameter
becomes N-A). When MIC+LIN is in effect,
 rotating the MIC
 control shows MIC GAIN.
The op has to set MIC SEL to LINE temporarily to set
 LINE IN gain.

* S-METER ABSOLUTE MODE: Use the CONFIG:SMTR MD menu
 entry. Set to ABS
(absolute) to have S-meter stay constant with
 preamp/atten
 settings. Default is NOR (where
PRE/ATTN affect the S-meter). ABS mode requires
 recalibration (SMTR
 OF SMTR SC).

RECEIVE:

* SSB RECEIVE PASSBAND EXTENDED AT LOW END (now 100 Hz;
 was 200 Hz).

* AM RECEIVE WIDTH RANGE INCREASED: The WIDTH control
 in AM mode now
 has
a range of 2.8 to 10.0 kHz. Wider settings provide
 outstanding
 fidelity for hi-fi speech
and other wide-band signals. This is the *IF* filter
 bandwidth --
 the traditional way to show
bandwidth for AM, because the required IF bandwidth is

It would be nice to be able to use CW paddle plugged into paddle jack.
Just like in K2.

Plug your key into the KEY jack, next to the

If not please put it on the wishlist.

Wayne,

I'm also very interested if the issue listed below is fixed.
In the last contest PEP power output in SSB mode was up and down 25%
on my Alpha 87A and the other amp.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3: preview of coming attractions

  Hi all,

  I'm leaving Saturday for a long-planned 10-day
 vacation. I thought we'd be
doing another firmware update before I left. Instead,
 we'll give our
intrepid field testers more time with this new code,
 then release it when
  I get back.

Here's a sneak preview. All of these features have
 been fully implemented:

   - transmit RF delay for slow amplifier relays
   - FM mode, complete with per-band/per-memory PL tones
 and repeater splits
   - wider-bandwidth AM and SSB receive
   - further improvements to SSB transmit, including a
 boost in
  low-frequency response
   - absolute S-meter alternative (reading
 stays the same with preamp/attn
  changes)
   - a variation on LIN OUT that allows recording of
 both RX and TX audio
   - MIC+LINE IN operation for SSB contesters
   - reflected-power-based KPA3 amplifier protection

Many of these have been on the short list for a long
 time, so we're
anxious to get this major release into your hands.
 Full details will be
  provided in the release notes.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB - WPX - Filters - Controls

2008-03-31 Thread mark roz
I have made 700 QSO's in WPX SSB contest(part time). I have also tried
different adjustment on the K3 including RX EQ.

I have to say the same thing It seemed I was always fighting some sort of side
band splatter or stations close in on the frequency.

Splatter is always in the contest but not as pronounced as with K3.
I don't know if it is the freq. response or something else with DSP.
I was so tired after few hundred QSO's. I have switched to TS930S.
With TS930s it was much better. Signals were much cleaner more dynamic
and the splatter not as offending as with K3.
I have 2.7kHz filter in my K3.

I like K3 very much in CW CONTEST but don't like in SSB contest at all.

Also, for some reason the output power from the K3 was fluctuating in time.
I had to keep adjusting PWR. My alpha 87A was showing 1500W PEP and than about
900W and so on. Than after 10 second or so again 1500W.
Looked to me like ALC action in the K3 was not always the same. I don't connect
ALC to the amp. Same thing when I switched to IC-4KL amp.

I would like to make a few comments and ask some questions.
This is by no means a put-down of the the K3, because I am
not sure I am operating the rig correctly. After all it is
a SDR and it is new.

During my first foray into SSB Contesting with the K3
during WPX, I found that I need either:

 1. Understand more about the DSP and the controls for BW,
 Hcut and Lcut

 2. Obtain a narrower roofing filter for SSB - like a 1.8
 Khz filter

 3. Or both.

I spent some time trying to find the sweet spot in the
radio for SSB using the 2.8 Khz filter. I don't think
I found it. At least, I am not satisfied.

I tried narrowing up the filter bandwidth to 2.4 or
 2.2some times 1.8.
I tried shifting it up and down the bandpass.
I tried to use High Cut and Low Cut depending on where the
 offending signal was coming from.
AGC was on Slow with the standard settings.
 Used the RIT a lot

It seemed I was always fighting some sort of side band
splatter or stations close in on the frequency. Maybe it
was just a crowded 20 meter band, but the same things
 happened on 40 meters.

Do I need to go to a 1.8 Khz filter to give the DSP a
 break?
Do I need to understand and play with the RX more to make
sure I am doing it right.

I would like to some feedback and comments on how other
people set up their K3s for SSB contesting.

I want to learn more about this radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Noise Reduction

2008-03-21 Thread mark roz
Lyle,

So, with SSB signal S9 and noise S2 with NR= F1-1 signal shouldn't drop to
much??

SSB signals always drop about 3dB. Even signals SSB with good S/N.

I understand all what you are saying but how hard it would be to increase AF
gain when NR is engaged?

Thanks,

OK, I accept what you are all saying about the gain, I
 was just
  postulating :)
I agree it does drop off, but I didn't think that
 much.
Anyone tried it with CONFIG:AF GAIN set LO? I
 haven't, just wondered.
If there was a config control for an offset, it would
 need to be based
on the 4 'strenghts' I think, not on the Fx
 number, but the digit after
  the -

The first value you see -- the Fx -- has to do with the
 aggressiveness
of the filter. The second value you see specifies the
 blend of
 processed and unprocessed audio.

Keep in mind always that the denoiser is not a denoiser; it
 is a signal
enhancer. It will act to suppress *everything* until it
 decides there
is some sort of signal present, then act to pass that
 signal. The more
the signal appears to be a pure tone (like CW) the faster
 and more
decisively the algorithm acts. The less it looks like a
 signal (noisy
SSB comes to mind) the slower and less decisively the
 algorithm acts.
This is why the audio level is low to begin with.

For CW with reasonable S/N, it usually quickly builds up to
 the same
overall amplitude as without the NR.

For SSB with poor S/N, it builds up slowly and to a lesser
 overall
 amplitude.

Thus, observations that the signal amplitude sometimes or
 often appears
reduced are correct. The disagreements about how much it
 is reduced are
 also correct.

It depends on the NR settings, the S/N of the signal you
 are listening
to at the moment, the type of signal, the IF and AF
 bandwidth...

FWIW, I usually have mine set to F1-1 or F1-2 for SSB
 operation. YMMV.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Noise Reduction

2008-03-20 Thread mark roz
David,

There is nothing to think about.
There is for sure significant reduction of volume.

Just listen to the station on 20m (low noise) using speaker 4 feet away. Adjust
the volume (to low level) to the point that you could still understand what the
person is saying. Than push NR. I bet that volume will drop to the point that
you will not copy the station.

Certainly, not compensating for AF gain loss when NR is engaged makes
noise reduction function work much better
NR in CW works fb. Little AF gain Loss.

Is it really a reduction in volume, or is it that with the
 noise gone,
 it sounds quieter?
I've noticed the 'apparent' reduction in
 volume, but I actually think
its that the NR has removed all the spurious noise and the
 result is a
cleaner audio that somehow sounds lower volume.

[Elecraft] K3 TX SSB audio changing freq. response

2008-03-19 Thread mark roz
Anybody noticed the TX SSB audio losing high freq.
This happens occasionally when K3 power is turned ON. Than I switch K3 power
OFF and than ON again and audio is fine.

At that point I have to readjust MIC gain UP or DOWN.In my case from
8 to 9 and back to 8. This will reset MIC amplification to normal.
If this is not done than MIC amplification is much lower and is not driving VOX
properly.

Anybody noticed that??

Tx SSB.This is normal. SSB tx signal from K3 is good

I have adjusted compresion to 25 and than MIC

That way I can get more dynamic signal (good average

[Elecraft] VP6DX and K3

2008-02-22 Thread mark roz
With my K3 I have worked VP6DX on all HF bands 160m to
10m SSB and CW. RTTY on 30m and 17m without computer.
Total 20 QSO's. FB expedition and outstanding K3.
I'm sure that there are more operators with K3 that
did the same thing.

Fwd: [Elecraft] K3 Equalization Memories - Missing?

2008-02-18 Thread mark roz
I was hoping that Equalization Memories will be
available in the future.
I'm using headset connected to the front of the radio
and studio MIC on the back.

With my set up it is not practical to use K3 EQ.

I'm a new K3 owner and enjoying the unit for all the
 reasons already stated
 by others.

But unless I've missed something, there are no
memories for the K3 TX and RX
 Equalization settings. Is that correct?

It would be extremely helplful to have such
 memories.

 For example:

I would like one Rcv Eq setting for weak CW signals,
where I kick up 400 hz
+10 db or so and drop the other eq bands. This
would help me pull the weak
CW sigs out of the noise better. Obviously this
 setting would not be used
for SSB or strong CW sigs, where I'd want a flatter
 eq curve.

I'd like one Tx Eq setting for local ragchew work,
 maximizing bandwidth and
freq response for best audio quality. Obviously,
 this setting would not be
good for DX. For DX, I'd want more punch where the
 midrange is kicked up
and the freq extremes are diminished.

Having several eq memories would allow this
flexibility. As it is, each set
of eq curves for different purposes must be manually
 entered. That's
 awkward and time consuming.

If I've missed something and this feature already
 exists - great. If it
doesn't, it would be nice to have it.

Argh! I agree with the others that multiple TX EQ
 settings are
a must. Even with the Mark V, I've discovered
 that it's often
very worthwhile to change transmit bandwidth, turn
 off/on the
EDSP modulation and select from among the built in
 EDSP EQ
based on conditions or operating style. A single
 setting - even
one setting for the front panel input and one for
 the back panel
 input - don't do the K3 justice.

It's on the list for one set of TX EQ settings

Fwd: [Elecraft] [K3] CQ WW WPX RTTY - a mini summary

2008-02-10 Thread mark roz
Toby,

I was operating RTTY AFSK mode. Driving K3 from my
computer sound card. I was using VOX or PTT.
At the start of transmission the output power of the
K3
would jump to 50W. However the power of K3 was
adjusted to 25W level. So, K3 would put out 50W at
first and than quickly go back to proper level of 25W.

This would put my AMP in to fault every time.
Does anybody know what am I doing wrong?

Just got home from our local club station.

For my first ever shortwave RTTY and my VHF RTTY
 experience is a couple
decades old, i.e. before packet radio, I must say I
 am very happy how
easy the K3 could be set up and how well it worked.
 Especially as an
almost absolute beginner in this mode, there were no
 serious hick ups,
not one. Mni thx to Ben, DL6RAI, who helped set up
 the laptop software.

I did notice one strange thing, and am wondering if
 anyone else saw
this. I used FSK and not AFSK, and when the FSK line
 is toggled, the
power output goes up and down. The power meters in
 the K3, the PA, the
matchbox and the SWR meter were a tad nervous while
 transmitting. As
long as the K3 transmits an unmodulated signal the
 power level is stable.

At any rate, after 930 QSOs and with a claimed score
 of just under 1.5
million, I can say I am one happy ham.

Fwd: [Elecraft] K3: Interim Build Report

2008-02-09 Thread mark roz
Dave,

My K3 arrived with all the parts.

SSB:

There were many postings about SSB mode (including
mine).
Some how, there was no response from Elecraft about
this.
I have many friends in EU who are waiting for that
DX/Contest audio from K3 before they decide to order
one.
I don't understand why Elecraft is not responding to
this issue. I just would like to know that Elecraft
has intention to improve SSB mode.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3: Interim Build Report

 Hi Everyone,

As I posted here at mid week, K3 #371 arrived from
 Aptos in fine shape.
I have begun the build and thought I would share
 some comments both
positive and negative with all. You opinions of
 course will most likely
be different but here are mine so far:

 Positive:
The kit was packaged magnificently. The care in
 packaging is first rate.
The manual is by far one of the most comprehensive I
 have seen in
building many kits over the years. Clear, concise
 and detailed but very
logical and easy to follow. Build quality of the
 boards is indeed
elegant. Fit and finish is simply excellent.
 Tolerances are amazing.
It is a work of engineering art. Congrats to Eric
 and Wayne of all of
this. They should be proud of their baby.

 Negative:
Yup I have a negative. Of all of the kits I have
 built over the years,
many of them fairly complex, from Heath, LDG, W9GR
 and many others, this
is the first to arrive short parts/hardware. And
 while the shortage is
minor, it is specialized and significant enough to
 stop me cold in the
build process and add yet another week to the final
 K3 experience.
Simply put, it has been deflating. Yet more delay.
 While Elecraft was
attentive to this matter over the phone and in a
 response from
K3Support, I am still not sure if the parts are
 headed this way as no
confirmation has been positively received. This will
 be my last kit
experience. I should have bought it factory
 assembled as I planned
originally. But I bought into the kit mystique.
 Never again.

 Concerns:
I am both a CW and SSB operator as non-contesting
 DX'er. SSB TX issues
are important to me. Several reports are surfacing
 here and elsewhere
from very reputable sources about the current lack
 of SSB bandwidth and
the lack of more powerful modulation. I urge
 Elecraft to address these
issues ASAP (now perhaps with more priority than the
 second receiver.)
This will be a deal breaker for me if not rectified.
 IMO it should have
been correct out of the box. This K3 will be
 evaluated against my highly
modified Ten Tec Omni V.9 which has for my operating
 requirements beat
out every transceiver on both CW and SSB since its
 arrival here at this
QTH, bar none, including my Pro III which for all
its true Rx warts is a
pretty darn good value for the $$.

I paid my $$ and took my chances and hope that this
 will all get
rectified in the end. And for those of you who may
 think that I should
not air complaints in public, I ask, did yours
 arrive complete?

 My $.02

I'm seeing K3 Width control behavior that's a bit of
 a head scratcher.

I've got the 2.8Khz filter, and the filter settings
 in config menu are all
normal. When I'm in USB or LSB with the passband
 centered and I rotate the
width control, my width options now are 2.3/2.5/2.7
 (2.9 will switch over to
the 6.0Khz filter as expected). When I normalize,
 it is giving me 2.7Khz.
I really want to set it to 2.8Khz now and I can't
 figure out how. I
definitely know that I've previously seen
 2.4/2.6/2.8 as the width options
and 2.8Khz for normalization but I can't seem to get
 there from here.

Are other folks seeing this? Am I missing something
 - why is the K3
flipping back and forth between these width options?

Maybe this whole thing could be solved with 100hz or
 50hz granularity of the
 width control in ssb.

 Thanks/73,
 Barry N1EU

[Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread mark roz
With SSB mic level adjusted to the max level (ALC to
the max)the average power measured on external meter
is only 4 Watts with distorted audio (power output set
at 110W). If I use external compressor the average
power is still only 4 Watts. This is done with CMP
gain at zero. This is not normal. Contest or ESSB guys
will not like that.
With K3 compression to the max average power is about
8 Watts.

K3 is a great radio but not in the transmit SSB mode.
If Mic gain is adjusted properly so there is no
distortion than the average power is even lower.

I'm sure that this could be improved in firmware.
If not than K3 would not be that good in the contest
and Dx -ing on SSB
Anybody has the same experience?
I remember that Toby from Bavarian DX Club and some
other guy was talking about SSB audio.

I'm not complaining but I would like to have SSB
signal comparable to radios like TS850, Ft1000D and so
on.
I hope that Elecraft will put this on their agenda.

Beside that, K3 is superb TRX-the best.

My mistake. Sorry. I should be more precise.

I should point out that I was comparing to FT1000D.
Never mind that my meter is showing 4W. Every meter
will show different average output power.
And yes I have two peak power meters.
Am I correct if i say that peak power meter will show
let say 100W with 3dB and 20db compression.
That tells me nothing about average power and I'm very
interested in average power in SSB.
That is what makes signal stronger at the receiving
side.
If we are interested in just peak power than why
bother with speech processors.

Anyway here is the comparison:
FT1000D 7W CMP off 30W CMP ON
K3 4W CMP off 20W CMP ON

MIC: HC5 and Goldline PRO
And yes both TRX peak power was set at 90W.
K3 peak power on 20m 90W with TXGN at 3dB. On CW 120W.
All what I'm trying to say is that perhaps K3 SSB
signal could be made more dynamic.

Oh, but this IS normal. You need a peak reading
 wattmeter. If anyone
ever uses an average reading power meter to try to
 figure out the talk
power of a radio, I guarantee you that they are
 putting out crude. Even
with the K3 compressor set up more than it should,
 your peak to average
ratio is very high. I have the Autek (sp?) peak
 reading meter in line,
and it shows exactly what is going on. On SSB, I get
 100 + watts, as I
talk. On CW, I get what I dialed into the K3, and on
 PSK, I get around
10, based upon the audio gain settings.

PLEASE! Never ever use an average reading
 wattmeter for anything
other than key down observations. Invest in a peak
 reading meter. I like
the Autek because it has two meters, peak reading
 forward power, and
peak reading, auto adjusted SWR reading. One has to
 do nothing but look
at this meter to tell what is going on.

With SSB mic level adjusted to the max level (ALC
 to
the max)the average power measured on external
 meter
is only 4 Watts with distorted audio (power output
 set
at 110W). If I use external compressor the average
power is still only 4 Watts. This is done with CMP
gain at zero. This is not normal.

I just finished over an hour ragchew session with
 some locals on 10 meter
SSB using VOX. I have never operated a rig with a
 VOX that works as smooth
and slick as the one that exists on my K3.

[Elecraft] K3 #296

2008-02-01 Thread mark roz
I like my K3.RX is so quiet. Very crisp CW tone and
super clear SSB reception.

However I have some small problem's :

1. On SSB with headphones plugged in and noise
reduction engaged, during transmission the audio
comes from the internal speaker in the form of short
bursts. It is impossible to transmit with NR in ON
position. In the menu, speaker is on 1.
This will happen more often if RF gain is decreased
and when shift is being adjusted. VOX is ON.

2. On SSB only. When NR is engaged noise drops but
also the level of the main SSB signal will drop
significantly. On CW is perfect.
I'm sure that this could be corrected in software.

The one thing I don't like about VOX is the fact that
its sensitivity is NOT independent of MIC gain like in
FT1000D. This probably cant be changed in software.

For those who didn't try very good quality MIC on SSB
I strongly suggest to do that. The transmit audio is
superb. HC5 is good but doesn't even compare to
Goldline Pro or condenser MIC.

Question: Do I need 6kHz filter in order to try ESSB.
Can't find it in the menu.
