Re: [Elecraft] Walwart power?

2008-12-23 Thread n0tk
Burke
A better choice would be a power supply for a laptop computer. These are
regulated units and will treat your KX1 more kindly than a wallwart. The
wallwarts are generally unregulated so their voltage  will be higher at light
loads than what you see printed on their case.

Hope to work you Kx1 to KX1 sometime.

Could I use a 12V 500ma to power my KX1 when at home?

Re: [Elecraft] External keyers with K3 - recommended?

2009-03-03 Thread n0tk
I always used the internal keyer in my Elecraft rigs. I recently built the
Winkey USB keyer from K1EL and use it with n1mm logger for contest operations.
It's a pretty good standalone keyer as well. Since the K3 has provisions for
both a paddle and straight key I use a Bencher paddle to the K3 and a Begali
paddle to the Winkeyer which plugs into the straight key jack on the K3.

Subject: [Elecraft] External keyers with K3 - recommended?

I have never in my 34 years as a ham used an external keyer and always used
either hand pump (old days) or built in keyer in my radios. But I keep
hearing folks using external keyers despite built in capabilities.

I am a CW enthusiast and over 95% of my Q's are CW. I do like using memories
but find the 4 quick memos in the K3 to be sufficient. I'm not interested in
using a keyboard nor display to watch the text.

Does anyone recommend an external keyer even with the K3?? I would rather
not hook on external boxes unless it will give me something extra.

If I do, I understand that Logikey and Microkeyer are great products.

Re: [Elecraft] Your Opinion: The realities of QRP vs. QRO

2009-03-05 Thread n0tk
Since everyone has an opinion here's mine. I believe that QRP and QRO both have
a place in ham radio. I really enjoy QRP operation because it brings back the
thrill of every contact that I had when I started in ham radio. When conditions
are marginal the extra power of QRO (100w in my case) can often make the
difference between no QSO and a completed one, most notably on 6m and 160m. I
do not take the opinion that running the legal limit means that one does not
enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Look at the big contest stations around the world
and often they are the only ones workable when conditions are marginal. Working
QRP stations can often increase the thrill of the station on the other end.

Subject: [Elecraft] Your Opinion: The realities of QRP vs. QRO

A few years back in our little farming community, there was a fellow
whose name was Francis.
Francis was an avid hunter.
At this time, the rumor went around the community that
Francis had been fined for deer jacking.
Out of his truck one night, with a spot light, he took a shot at a
plastic deer planted by game wardens.
Soon it became a joke…….Sir Francis the deer slayer.

Something within me seemed to understand Francis’ point of view.
He was a pragmatist….. He had little interest in the thrill of the hunt.
He was focu
sed on the efficiency of the catch.

Although QRO is far from illegal, it does seem to be somewhat more
focused on the efficiency of the catch than the thrill of the hunt.
So there is a certain un-romantic reality to QRO vs. QRP.

I'm wondering, what percentage of contacts you've made QRO, that you
would estimate as not attainable QRP.

I hope I didn't break the list rules getting off-topic with the story

[Elecraft] K3 and N1MM Logger Configuration Rosetta Stone

2009-03-16 Thread n0tk
I need some help from anyone who has successfully used their K3 and N1mm Logger
connected through the computer serial Com1 port. With the K3 off and connection
from the K3 RS232 connector to the computer Com1 port I select Config Ports and
have the settings under the Hardware Tab as Always CW and Don't Change Radio
Mode. Under the Hardware Tab I select K3 for Com1 with DTR(Pin4) and RTS(Pin7)
both set to Always On as suggested by the N1MM information displayed. With the
K3 mode set to CW and the K3 Config for RS232 is set to the default for the K3
I power on the K3 and I click OK for the N1MM Config window. The VFO A window
bandmap shows the correct frequency displayed by the K3. Then I get a series of
error messages that say Get Entry Window(RadioInterface_Interpret
Response)-9-Subscript... which locks up the N1MM program.
Seems like a configuration problem but may also be a problem with the K3 RS232
port.

Any constructive suggestions will be appreciated.

When I was in Baltimore for a biz trip, I met LL K3ESE for dinner. He asked
if I wanted to try using the Begali paddles and offered to send me a Begali
simplex dual lever paddle for a trial run. I used the paddles and decided to
purchase the Begali. One of the best HR purchases I have made. The quality,
look, feel, and keying performance is the best I have experienced. If you can
make a trial run on these keys, take the opprtunity to do so.

[Elecraft] K1 trip to Ireland

2005-08-10 Thread N0tk
Just returned from an 11 day trip in Ireland. Took the K1 along in my
carry-on luggage with no issues at any of the airports used. Hotel
accommodations
were not the best for antenna effectiveness and tour activities prevented
operation when 20m propogation was best. Worked some EU stations from my
second
story hotel room in Kinsale using a 25 foot end fed wire and the ATU in the
K1. Power source was a battery pack made up of 8 series AA cells. Power output
was set at 4w. The rig performed flawlessly and has now logged contacts in
KH6, G, and EI.

Re: [Elecraft] Dropping the Code Test

2005-09-03 Thread N0tk
When I took the Extra exam in 1968, it was several years after taking the
General exam and there was no Advanced class. I had to study for it quite a
lot.
Those who got their Extra license earlier would tell me that the exam was
much easier when I took it than when they did as they needed to draw
schematics
of circuitry to pass and I didn't. That did not take the edge off my feeling
of accomplishment. I assume that the more recent Extra class hams share in
that feeling of accomplishment.

[Elecraft] KXPD1

2005-09-09 Thread N0tk
Great order support from Elecraft. A local ham (WI6T) let me use his KXPD1
on Sunday, and I placed an order for mine on Sunday night. Got an email on
Tuesday that said it was shipped. Arrived in the mailbox on Thursday. Got it
built Thursday night and it works well (took a test run at 20 wpm, 25 wpm,30
wpm
and 35 wpm with no sending errors and the paddle has a great feel). A very
nice addition to the KX1.
Moral of the story. The Elecraft products sell themselves OR Elecraft has
built a reputation for exceptional design and service.

Re: [Elecraft] 160 m contest

2005-01-30 Thread N0tk
Dave
Worked 31 stations in 15 states and VE5 with my FT-817 and "special" 160m
antenna. I feed the center conductor of my coax feedline from basement to attic

tuned with my ATU. Guess I need to install the 160m option in my K2. I did
notice that the FT-817 roofing filter will not eliminate intermods from my
local 160m neighbors. The K2 should do much better. I also got 5NNs on all
contacts but I bet I was 219 on most of them.

Re: [Elecraft] 160 on the K2

2005-06-10 Thread N0tk
I have not put the 160m module in my K2 but I do have some experience in
operating QRP on 160m from my antenna restricted QTH. I found that the feedline

run I placed in my house from basement to attic (when the house was being
framed) will tune up with my external Z11 ATU on 160m and I run my FT-817 at 5w

on that band. I only can make contacts during the contests and the majority of
those are with stations with very large antennas. Still, a lot of fun doing
more with less.

I too like my K1 a lot. My K2 is the main station rig and the K1 travels
with me. I have used it operating portable in Maui and in London and it packs
very well. Installed the KAT1 before the London trip and worked Europeans on
20m
with a wire tossed out the hotel window. Ran at both DX locations off of 8
AA cells. While the K2 and KX1 seem to be more popular, I consider the K1 to
be a best buy from Elecraft.
