[Elecraft] K4 Questions

2019-06-06 Thread n4cc

I have a couple questions regarding the K4 and K4HD - perhaps for
Wayne/Eric.

1. I understand that the K4HD will have a selectable feature that would
allow it to use either the direct sampling or the superhet front end. If I
had a K4HD, why would I ever want to switch from the better superhet front
end to SDR - assuming I already own all the filters?
2. Will there be a "K4 mini"? I know I could operate remotely from a
PC, etc. but would prefer the "real radio" feel with knobs, a plug in
paddle, etc. and having the panadapter screen in the mini would be a plus?
I use a K3 mini now but not with a P3.
3. My primary station is built as a remote station in FL in partnership
with Paul-W9AC. We use Verizon 4G LTE for internet and are limited to 30 GB
of data per month (without upcharge). How data intensive is the K4 with the
panadapter in remote operation versus the K3S -- assuming it would be
controlled with a K4 mini or another K4 to get the panadapter feature??
(Forgive me if I'm not asking the question correctly, but I think you'll
understand my intent.)

Thanks. 73, Greg-N4CC

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Power Output Variation

2019-08-24 Thread n4cc
Why worry about it? No one on the other end would be able to tell one bit
of difference. I see power drop -- maybe 5 - 10 percent -- as the KPA1500
heats up...likely normal. The small bit of reflected power may also have
some minor effect on the wattmeter readings you see as well. 73, Greg-N4CC

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 207, Issue 16

2021-07-17 Thread n4cc
This list is for 160 meter issues --not for chemistry. There was only one
response that was accurate -- from Dr. Schmidt. Brian started the
discussion talking about isopropyl alcohol -- not ethyl alcohol and it turns
out many don't recognize the difference. Hope you don't drink 99%
IPAbut it would "clean up" this list if you did. 73, Greg-N4CC

Hopefully this is obvious, but make sure you are using the 90-91% isopropyl
alcohol, and not the 70% variety. It can still be hard to get the 90%
variety these days.

Yup, it's the 90% stuff. It was impossible to get a year ago, but not too
bad now. Still, I had to wait a month or so when I ordered it from Amazon.

this the short and long halves of the antenna be the cause?

Well, yes, here's why! You'll find that if you switch to "ALT" in SSB the
Windom performance matches that on CW. Likewise, if you switch to "CW REV"
mode, the Windowm performance is down. This is of course, determined by the
polarity of your Windom feedline (whether the coax center or shield is
hooked to the longer side of the Windom). This effect can be equalized
slightly by using balanced feeders.

Elecraft moniker and my call letters. I chose black with gold
embroidery and it really looks great! The service was swift, too. I
was shocked at how fast it arrived and it was easy to pay with Paypal
as well. Protect that new K3 with one of Rose's covers...write her

Re: FW: [Elecraft] K3 and StepIR/Icom PW-1

2008-09-07 Thread Greg - N4CC
I'm using the K3 with a PW-1 and the beauty of it is you don't need
the ALC if you use the K3's capacity to store the power level (drive
level) for each band. Obviously if you use the K3 barefoot at 100
watts you would have to be careful to turn it back down with the amp
but I just leave it at the saved settings that I have established for
output for each band. The proper drive level does vary somewhat by
band. You are right about the ALC ..the K3 ALC is not compatible
with the PW-1 and you should not connect the ALC line between the
two. 73 de Greg

Re: FW: [Elecraft] K3 and StepIR/Icom PW-1

2008-09-07 Thread Greg - N4CC
Adam -- I guess it depends on the user. Certainly having the ALC
connected (if it were compatible) would be preferred...but my point
is that saying " the K3 should not be used as an exciter for the
PW-1" [without ALC] is not entirely accurate. it is possible to use
the PW-1 without ALC. It can be done and done quite safely. Granted
you lose a measure of protection but if you use the K3 as I do --
where it recalls the drive setting by band, a unique feature of the
K3 -- it is less likely that not having the ALC connected will ever
be an issue. If you change the power settings frequently and are
not careful to return them to the desired drive level when operating
the amplifier then your chance of damaging the amp increases without
the ALC. Cheers. 73 de Greg

At 10:53 PM 9/7/2008, you wrote:

Hi Greg,

The PW1 uses the ALC loop as an essential part of its protective subsystem,
as described in the service manual excerpt which I sent you. Any one of
several anomalous operating conditions (including over-drive and load
mismatch) will pull down the ALC line to reduce the drive. This is the
amplifier's first line of defence.

I would never put an expensive piece of equipment such as the PW1 at risk by
connecting it to an exciter without a fully-functional ALC loop.

[Elecraft] Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 vs FT1000D

2008-09-10 Thread Greg - N4CC
I've had a FT-1000D since the early 90's...the
only change I've made is I got rid of an older
one and got a newer one that was cosmetically
prettier. It is still on the desk. I intend to
keep both radios...so I'm not prejudiced for one
radio versus the other because of the one I have sitting on the desk.

I have done A/B tests with both radios...and I
can honestly tell you that I have worked two very
weak stations on the K3 that I could not work on
the 1000D because I could copy them on the K3 and
not the 1000D. I could tell the signal was there
but it was not intelligible -- one on 20 meters
and one on 40 meters...switching the same
antennas back and forth between the two
radios. Pluses for the 1000D -- Yes, the feel of
the knob is nicer. I like the APF for cw work on
the 1000D. The sound of the radio in the speaker
is fuller than the K3 with the RX equalizer set
"flat" on the K3. I can make them sound almost
identical by adjusting the RX equalizer on the
K3. The 1000D is 200 watts. The 1000D has "band
buttons". The 1000D has a real analog meter...I
happen to prefer that. Pluses for the K3 -- It
is easier to move around on the desk and get
plugs in and out of the back; The selectivity /
DSP in the K3 is a WOW! compared to the
shift/width control on the 1000D; the tx test
mode on the K3 is handy for adjusting things
without actually transmitting a signal; the cwt
and auto spot feature is pretty slick; it will be
nice when they have the DVR available; I like the
way the RIT and XIT CLR button works. You get
new features every time Elecraft responds to a
new "wish list" item; the ability to remember
power levels by band is unique and I find it very
useful. I think I get less blocking with the K3
from loud local than I do on the 1000D -- that's
perception, not measurement. The K3 has 6 meters
on it. The K3 can be adjusted to low power
levels much more accurately and lower than the
1000D. If I were going to keep one and get rid
of the other, my vote would be to keep the
K3...but both radios are very nice. YMMV.

As far as I'm concerned there is one more factor
that is overwhelmingly in favor of
Elecraftthe customer servicenot to
mention that if I have to send a radio in for
service the 1000D weighs in right at 70 lbs while
the K3 would be 10 or less with all the
packing...The chance of UPS crunching your 1000D
is far greater than crunching the K3 if F=MA is
still true...:-) (OK all you physicists can tell
me why that is incorrect...I'm too old and too
crotchety to care any more.) 73 de Greg-N4CC

Ok then, the VFO knob on the K3 is crap compared to the 2000.

After switching on the K3 for the first time,
the next time I switched on the 2000 was to
demonstrate it to the buyer when I sold it.

Re: [Elecraft] 'Q' signal trivia

2011-07-18 Thread Greg - N4CC

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this...

73 means "best regards" and is sufficient without an "s".

If you say "73s", it is like saying, "best regards's".

However, I admit that it has become rather common practice in recent times.

[Elecraft] ESD recommendation

2007-11-23 Thread Greg - N4CC
Hello all -- Like everyone else I'm looking forward to a K3 showing
up sometime before I become a SK...hi hi...(third production
run...ugh)...but I'm trying to get prepared so everything will be
ready to go when the kit gets here. I don't have any special "ESD"
protection and was wondering what others have done to comply with
appropriate ESD protectionand where you have obtained wrist
straps, ESD mats, etc. I live in FL and normally static is not a
particular problem...(lightning -- yeslow humidity and static --
no) It's not like a northern dry winter where you can walk across
the carpet and draw a spark from a door knob...so I'm wondering if I
even have to go to the effort...Interested in your thoughts...73 de Greg-N4CC

Re: [Elecraft] Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 Shipping Status Update 11/26/07

2007-11-27 Thread Greg - N4CC
Oh come on now, David...there is no "fiasco". The folks at Aptos are
doing a marvelous job. They've had to deal with things that just
"happen" when you have a complex production operation and are relying
on subs for contract parts/boards.

So the first K3's didn't come out on the original schedule...they
have communicated why that is true and are providing weekly updates
of revised schedules. The anxiety that is being created is caused
more by people on this reflector who are SPECULATING on what is
happening and whining about it. If you read updates you would know
that if you ordered in early May then your radio is likely to ship in
the next couple weeks...and if that changes, you will know
why...Here's what was said...

Shipping weeks of Nov 26-30 and Dec 3-7
(Orders with deposits):
We will be shipping the remaining 5/1 orders and many of the 5/2
orders during this period. (We still have at least a week to go on
5/1 orders due to the very short holiday week last week.)

We have been running a little slow on assembled K3s and are still
working on shipping a small number of these from 4/27-30 this week.
The shipping rate on these will pick up this week (week of 11/26) and next.

The initial rush of orders was greatest 4/27-5/3, and also on 5/7.
After that group is shipped our movement through the backlog calendar
will pick up considerably. We're also adding staff (and overtime) in
production and test and hope to beat the above plan. We'll update it
here early each week.

How can you ask for more than that? If you have a specific question
regarding your order, ask them...don't talk about tarnished
reputation on a reflector.

I sent a note to Lisa yesterday evening asking if she expected
shipment of my radio before Christmas. Mine was ordered on July
6. AT 8:02 PM Pacific time she replied...and said that if things go
as planned it should be shipped before the end of the year... Try
sending a note to one of the other manufacturers and see if you get a
reply from them at 8 p.m. Ha!

I also had not put down a deposit and told her that I would be happy
to do that if priority was being given to those who did provide the
deposit. She said a deposit would not change my place in line. I'm
absolutely delighted and astounded by the prompt response from some
obviously dedicated people. I've never owned an Elecraft radio
before but if it works as well as the customer service, I know I will
be happy. Patience, lad...if you didn't have the anticipation, you
wouldn't appreciate it as much when you do get it. 73 de Greg-N4CC

Sadly, Julian, Elecraft's previous good name is being tarnished by

For several months, non-Elecraft users have been asking me about my

when I get it. Unfortunately, with them it has now become somewhat of a joke.

Like you, I ordered mine with a deposit early May, prompted by the
attraction of one of the first 200. Will it ever happen?

The option to pay a 50% deposit is still on the Elecraft order page.
Doubtless the offer to get one of the first 200 is now withdrawn, but
one wonders what the benefit of paying the deposit is, in that case.
