[Elecraft] K2 and KAP100 / KAT100 - SOLD
The K2 and EC2 amp/tuner described below in an earlier email has been sold. Thank you for your inquiries. Hmmnext step in radio landponder...ponder.. 73/Tim NZ7C This is, I think, my 4th K2, it has been checked out by Gary Surrency (which I always do as a final step). The K2 has every possible option including battery and auto-tuner, except the audio filter (since it has the dsp installed). The 100w amp and auto-tuner are in a separate enclosure. They both perform flawlessly and were built last Spring. I will only sell as a set. Price is $1900 plus a little for shipping Conus. [Elecraft] Battery question
Hello - I finished a K2 last Spring. Shortly therafter the shack came down while I did a massive home remodel. About two months into the remodel it occurred to me that I did not have the K2 plugged and thus the onboard battery was not being charged. I turned on the K2 without external power and I believe the display said around 10 volts before it died. The battery had no juice. I've plugged in the power supply and have started recharging the battery. The radio will stay on now with battery only, but I cannot get the battery voltage to go much over 11 volts. Yes I am a technical dunce, chuckle - and now that the chuckle is overwith: How can I determine if the battery is permanently damaged? Also, how long would it normally take a K2 battery to discharge when not in use and, conversely, how long should it take to charge back to full capacity? Thank you in advance. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: Re: [Elecraft] DSP NR on SSB
Dave - I recently installed the DSP and do not find that it sounds as if it is through a pillow. This particular K2 has the best amplification and audio of the 3 I have had - by FAR due to I believe some really judicious adjusting of the AGC etc per all the discussions on the archive. I wonder if double checking to make sure all audio potential etc etc is totally tweaked BEFORE installing the DSP will improve the muffled effect you are getting. I find the least degradation of the sound I've heard based on in shack comps with 7565ProII DSP and SCG's DSP and consequently very usable. Just my thoughts... 73/Tim NZ7C From: "David M. [Elecraft] AGC setting - reality check please
Hi folks - After reviewing the reflector archives regarding AGC setting and volume I decided to set my AGC in the manner Don Wilhelm describes. I took a quiet band and adjusted R1 just down to the point where I hear no difference in the band when I turn the AGC off and on. I made sure that I went no further then I had to and checked all bands. AFTER that I looked at the voltage measured on U2 pin 5 because I did not want the suggested 3.8v to cause me not to believe my ears - so to speak. The AGC is now set perfectly per Don's instructions and the voltage reading is 3.3v. Reality check - that's a fair bit awy from 3.8 - is that acceptable or does it suggest something is wrong? Re: RE: [Elecraft] K2 12 volt power jack for amplified speaker?
Don - I probably did not make myself clear. I would only operate this speaker in my shack when the K2 was running off a power supply - I just like to avoid having another set of power cords going the the PS. Regarding the battery I want to search the archives to see how I can run the K2 off an external battery when the internal battery poops out in the field (ie without popping the top and changing batteries. I need to set it up so that the external battery is not attempting to charge the internal battery. Thanks Don! 73/Tim From: "W3FPR - Don Wilhelm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: 2005/01/31 Mon PM 04:38:29 EST To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 12 volt power jack for amplified speaker? Tim, Operating an external amplified speaker from the K2 internal battery will work, but the amplifier will likely draw as much current as the K2 receiver, significantly shortening the time you can operate on the internal battery. If you really want to install an accessory jack, I would suggest using one of the transverter holes in the top cover for the jack. A suitable take off point could be at the cathode of D12. There certainly are others, but that one would be easy to implement, and should cause no harm other than the extra current drawn from the battery. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Hi folks - > I have a Motorola amplified speaker that I am about to wire up. > While the K2 is in my shack I would like to have the speaker's > voltage supply come from the K2 - ie make an accessory jack. > > Assuming the K2 has the on board battery installed, where would > be the ideal place to tap off the voltage and would it create any > problem for the K2? > > That's correct I am not a techy or even a sub-sub-techy :-) > Thanks for the help in advance! > 73/Tim NZ7C > > ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Q7 base resistance test - low reading
Hi folks - I just completed the RF board and am doing the resistance checks on page 71. For Q7 base it requires 2.5 - 3.0 k. My DVM onky meausres .4 ohms - no where near 2300 - 3000 ohms. I assume this means I have a short. There is no short between the soldered pads on Q7 and I rechecked the mounting screw hardware to make sure each part was correctly in place. All other measurements for the RF board are OK. Not being anything but a paint-by-number solderer, am I reading the table correctly? That does mean 2500 - 3000 ohms write? They use 3 digits - 2 significant digits followed by a multiplier. The multiplier tells us how many zeros to add - so 470 would be a 47 pf capacitor, 471 is 470 pf, 472 is 4700 pf, etc. The exception is that values in the range 0 to 9.9 pf are usually marked with their actual value (and usually followed by a letter) - and values from 10 pf to 99 pf can be marked with just their value (but it will have only 2 digits, not 3). If the marking contains only one or two numbers, that number is the capacitor value, and if it contains a decimal point, that marking is most certainly the value. Yes, there are several ways that capacitors can be marked, just look at the component data section of an ARRL handbook to become familiar with the variety, but for the most current production capacitors, the marking rules indicated above will hold true. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - From: "John R. Hi folks - In starting a new K2 project, I will be approaching it somewhat differently than my prior K2s. My 1st component, arriving soon, will be the basic K2. I then plan to build the amp and external tuner in the separate EC2 enclosure. I will be leaving SSB, computer interface, DSP, and the internal tuner & battery until last. In short I want to get to full power cw capability first. My question is this: with this order of building will I be creating a situation where I have to "redo" or "change" a component - ie creating extra work for myself? Thanks folks. Re: [Elecraft] Ready to buy K2/100 - question on CW qsk
Rich - QSK just as good or better than Ten Tec. K2 is a cw ops dream. 73/Tim NZ7C From: "Richard Merhar" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: 2004/12/29 Wed PM 02:52:45 EST To: Subject: [Elecraft] Ready to buy K2/100 - question on CW qsk Hello all- I think the K2 looks like great rig. But, how quick is QSK? Can you hear the receiver between dits on the cw transmit when using QSK? I like the fast response of my TS-850 and would hope the K2 would be able to perform at least as well as the TS-850 (now sold as seed money for the K2) Your opinions are appreciated. [Elecraft] Build 100W amp & tuner 1st - issues?
OK - I got it (from about half a dozen very nice folks!). Been awhile and I forgot completely that you cannot even buy the amp buy itself unless you have a K2 already - plus it does require interactive testing. Thanks everyone. 73/Tim NZ7C ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Build 100W amp & tuner 1st - issues?
Thinking of building 100W amp with tuner box before I start on a K2 - only because I have not built that particular box before and it would be the most interesting part of the project. If I do that, will not having a K2 in hand cause me a problem during the build - i.e. is there any part of the build that requires a K2 to be present for testing etc? Thanks in advance. [Elecraft] 3rd K2 and BPL
Hello folks - Well, it's been a long while since I've been on this reflector but I am getting the fever to build again (this would be my 3rd K2). However, I find lately I am more reticent to spend money on equipment because of the eventual "BPL threat effect". So I am curious to hear from any on the reflector who are truly well-versed in this field : 1 - Many say that regardless of the FCC, BPL is not a threat because it is not economically feasible - witness attempts in Europe which were abandoned because of economic infeasibility. 2 - Others eschew the "it's all over for the ham bands" view. Is there anyone close to the BPL world that has some good solid input / conjecture (vs uninformed gripes :-) on this before I invest in another K2 project? Thanks in advance and I hope this topic is OK with Wayne and Eric. 73/Tim NZ7C ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
