[Elecraft] K3 minor parts
Hi Folks HNY from ZL, Just a quick post about small minor parts for my K3. Now nearly 10 years old and has broken audio/rf knobs. No big deal been like this for a while. Checked today to replacewith shipping to ZL it's a lost cause. Guess this relates to inventory and stock control. Plan B is look for a near enough replacement. Be interested what others have managed to source. Re: [Elecraft] KX-3 4092 - broken probably bin 13 material
Hi folks A follow up KX-3 4092. Thankyou to the off-list emails and advice. It's not looking flash. Suspect the fault is a low level issue on the early 12volt lines or one of the dc-dc converters. This sounds familiar A while ago updated a k3 using my laptop and usb to serial. The RS232 won't fit properly to the K3 so used a linking CAT-5E cable a couple of meters long. Re: [Elecraft] Slighty off topic - 80 meter second harmnic how to stop
Hello again folks Thanks to all for the suggestions and hints to what this problem could be. Tests have been done at 2 locations; my own home station and here at another property ( work in progress as we politely say..) about 125km south of Auckland. The same second harmonic garbage is heard at both places. Over the last day I have completely swapped out all the 80m and 40m antenna and feeder components here in the provinces. No change. What I now strongly suspect is the only common point at both locales; both properties have burglar alarms installed. Both are almost identical well known European name brand units. There is no detectable RF radiation from the processors or wiring. The clincher now that I think about the last time we ran 2 stations here without any drama was before the alarm was commissioned here. I have dropped the supply and backup DC to the alarm here without any change, Likely 3.5 meg RF is simply hammering the PIR's, cable runs are in the roof cavity. Can't %100 prove this without fairly major re-wiring, will leave it as is for the meantime, thanks again guys cheers from ZL Paul zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Slighty-off-topic-80-meter-second-harmnic-how-to-stop-tp7614506p7614534.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Slighty off topic - 80 meter second harmnic how to stop
Hi folks slightly off topic running 2 x K3 80 and 40 meter cw. Separate antenna about 50 meters apart. 100 watts. Power supply 14 volt dc via batterys + dc charge. The 80 meter second harmonic is very strong. No surprise so have done the usual 80 meter band pass filter and quarter wave stub For what ever reason the harmonic is still very present..darn.. oddly has a rasping note not pure carrier. A close ham about 400 meters away can also hear the 2nd hamonnic, band pass in or out makes little change. Possible is related to coax feedlines running close for some distance ? Both are very well choked at feeder and TX Happy to respond off topic cheers from ZL Paul zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Slighty-off-topic-80-meter-second-harmnic-how-to-stop-tp7614506.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KX-3 Transmit Audio - Echo on TX SSB - interesting find
Hi Folks I have owned a KX-3 for a couple of years, have fitted the filter board and auto-tuner and a set of internal batteries and charger. Certainly a tidy package. Something I like using is a small light headset aka cheap and cheerful pc gaming type hardware. i use these on my K2 and K3 with great results. The heavy bass needs taming down, simple RC filter does the trick. >From day one the KX-3 seemed very bass heavy. Something didn't sound quite right, an odd echo on SSB with higher mic gain settings. Bias for the Mic was enabled to power the insert. Setting for TX EQ -16 for 100 200 400 hz. I added a 0.047uF cap into the mic line to roll the low end audio. This prevents the mic power from working, so figured the unused mic up/down line could be used. It is about 2.5volts in series with 5.6k. So we now have a working mic, with minor internal changes at the mic socket. But the echo seemed if anything worse at higher mic gain. Now as a long shot terminated the mic up/down line with about 10uF electro. This would ensure the bias supply is clean. Echo is now gone. Totally. I suspect what is happening is headset plugs are sitting accross the up/down line, some audio is ending up where is should not be. I am well pleased. The 3 components ( 0.047uF 5.6k 10uF ) can be mounted directly on the KX-3 mic socket. It's a squeeze but works well cheers from ZL Paul zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX-3-Transmit-Audio-Echo-on-TX-SSB-interesting-find-tp7609274.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Anyone else try JG1XLZ's KSB2 Mod?
K2 here was built several years ago and later added the external 100w pa and tuner. For quite a while got reports of slightly ragged sideband but certainly not a show stopper. A few weeks ago finally took a look and found the bias on the K2 finals just slightly on the low side; according to the manual it was well within spec. Increased about % 10 tidied up ok. Part II was the mod you mention. this has also been done, can honestly say the K2 SSB is right on the money. I previously sent a note to the K2 forum, incorrectly typed the final bias about 100mA to high. Re: [Elecraft] K2 audio images strong signals 40 meters
Hi again folks Update on K2 40 meter audio images around 7175; Serial number of build is 6534 with most options installed. Dummy load on Antenna RX 40 meters. Test signals received on 7170 approx 50uVolt, S9 on the K2. Tune to approx 7175 an image is heard. It is not inverted or reversed tune. Leave the K2 on 7170 and tune the test signal to 7184. It can be heard on 7170. Best approx guess is 5 s-points down so probably not a big deal except when the band is quiet and strong signals are nearby. The calibration cable has been removed, Filter setting and mode have no effect. On CW the image signal tunes exactly the same, again about 5 s-points down. Noticed this oddity a while ago when listening to a couple of strong SSB stations during daylight hours at another QTH with low rf background noise. Suspect this has been the same since build several years ago, won't be loosing any sleep over it, more curious if it is something related to vco mixing products somewhere? I have noted the mods on earlier K2 builds, could well be in the same field. thanks for the replies cheers Paul b zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-audio-images-strong-signals-40-meters-tp7591965p7591984.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KX-3 4092
Hi Folks Owned a KX3 for a while but never used portable until recently. Antenna is a 40m dipole, coax fed. Nothing exotic. For some reason the KX3 tuner has a problem getting a good match. It settles on something like 1.8/1 which is not big deal except other transcievers show near perfect match around 7.1megs. Latest firmware ver loaded. Now here is the odd part; above 7260 fast perfect match. Move down 1khz to 7259 and the tuner won't match correctly. On a 50 ohm dummy load tuner is faultless. Some thing I noted is the VSWR reading on the KX3 seems out of line with other equipment. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 headset recommendation
Interesting to see this thread.. the K2 and K3 owned here have bags of audio transmit gain. This allows the heavy bass vowel sounds to be rolled off below about 300 hz. The KX3 seems to be slightly lacking in TX audio; the not-so-great fix here has been to construct a very small outboard single transistor mic amp. It is powered from a small 9 volt battery. For my own use the mic insert had a tad to much bass, it has been slightly modded here to suit. regards Paul zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/MH2-Microphone-Issue-tp5106621p5107093.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Good morning folks Noticed the odd pitch change a while ago, it is on strong sigs over s9. It is heard on some signals more than others. Re: [Elecraft] K2 external auto tuner and 100 watt amp
Hi Jim Thanks for the info :-) Excellent, that is exactly what I want to put together. for the record, some background to this project... a few weekends ago was the ZL National Field Day which I havn't done anything remotely serious for over 20 years ! A small team was put together, and I took along my K3 and the K2 as a backup receiver. Long story short, the K2 was put into service when it was quickly apparent the other-brand transceivers had front end and/or mixer overload. ( eg in kiwi speak - completely hammered ) K3 ran perfectly, no question. The K2 performed beyond the call of duty, so figure add the amp and tuner for casual contest and home station work. [Elecraft] K2 external auto tuner and 100 watt amp
Hello folks Need a bit of input hereI have a K2 with auto tuner fitted. I would like to add the 100watt amp and external tuner. Can these be put together in one single unit, using an Elecraft box ? [Elecraft] re-visit Subtle Change in CW monitor tone
Hi folks This was a thread a week or two back. Very slight kinda' pitch change when listening to strong CW sigs. I posted a while ago relating this to the hardware AGC action, seems to occur when sigs over about 70 uV Had another listen this evening; think it occurs when the CW siganls have quite a bit of key click. Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC and Apparent Noise and Signal Distortion
Hello folks Just to follow up on this thread...listening to quite strong CW sigs with Slow AGC setting is not too flash. I would guess sigs over 75 uV or so which is well into the 9+ region. It is hard to exactly describe but sounds like the Hardware AGC loop is pumping. It is fine on SSB or weak CW. Re: [Elecraft] Jurrasic Radio vs. K3
good morning folks great thread ! similar story here, young teenage years using a Heathkit HR-10 reciever, and DX-40U both purchased second hand. The HR-10 was less than stellar for sideband, it had more drift than a Japanese fishing fleet ! Very early on I was given a battery tube AM / CW transciever, which was used on the South Pole expedition in 1957 (?) with Sir Edmund Hillary. It had huge coloured knobs for use with gloved hands, and a complete set of 1.5volt batt valve spares in the cover. Re: [Elecraft] [K1] internal battery - charging
Hi Mike The K1 cover is the original supplied with the kit. Smaller speaker volume is quite a bit lower, but I use a headset so it's not a big issue for my style of use. The bracket which the batts/speaker sit in can be slightly modified to sit lower in the chassis, this allows the kit cover to sit flat. Looks stock except the front speaker screw holes are visible. I have put a dyno label accross them with my callsign and rig serial number...looks ok. AA batts are sealed but leaks will occur no doubt. [Elecraft] [K1] internal battery - charging
Hello folks Recently completed a K1, all works well. A mod here which I know is nqr ( not quite right ) is fitting a simple internal charger circuit so the batt pack can be left in situ. The original cover is also used, with the smaller speaker. Fit is what could be politely called snug When external 13.5 volts is used, the batts get a very small charge, about 15 ma. Now here is the tricky bit..when the K1 is off, but the external supply left plugged in, the charge rate is approx 200ma. Yep I know it's not really correct, but sure beats taking the top off to replace cells. cheers Paul zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/internal-battery-charging-tp3677955p3677955.html Sent from the [K1] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KNB2 vs. electric fence.
Hi folks Interested to read the thead on electric fences. They are very common here around New Zealand, even in semi rural areas. The trick apparently is not the actual voltage which hurts, it's a gradual rise time which causes muscle contraction. I suspect this is why some fences are hard to knock out with the noise blanker. Certainly the high end devices in use down-under really pack a punch, and can supply energy to miles and miles of 5 wire fences. They are designed to simply burn off any grass or weeds which grow around the wires. My K2 works more or less on local fences, using low threshold. Sometimes it has very little effect. This could be related to pulse shape and width. Interestingly the K3 also is not so flash, the old Kenwood TS520S was a trooper in this dept. cheers paul b I've recently started picking up relatively strong pulses at 1 second intervals on my K2. I suspect they're coming from a new electric fence somewhere in the neighborhood. But where they're coming from is immaterial to my question. Should the KNB2 noise blanker be effective against this type of noise? I've always thought that such impulse type noise was exactly what noise blankers were supposed to work best on, but I hear no difference in the pulses whether the NB is on or off, nor at high or low threshold settings. This is making me question whether the NB is working at all. Any thoughts? 73 -- Joe KB8AP ___ Elecra -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KNB2-vs.-electric-fence.-tp667424p3224062.html Sent from the [K2] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi again folks Follow up from original post; I have run K3 on a dummy load on the bench. Removed top cover, and transmit 100W SSB from the audio digi-memory M1. The voice buzz is from the PA module, which I suppose is no big deal. Removed the PA and checked all screws were tight, and put back into service. No change to the audio buzz, it is my guess the PA final ferrite transformer magnetic field is pretty strong, vibrating the core. Interested to hear any follow up. thanks cheers from down under Paul b zl1ajy I have the same buzz, and no question it is not the case. I find it particularly irritating when I have the built in voice keyer running and am in a quiet shack.
