[Elecraft] k2 progress!
okay, i have not been working very diligently on my k2.. i have had tons to do at work, and any time i have been in my workshop, i have been playing with the k1.. but i have just made some headway.. i have been using the no rework kit (which i TOTALLY suggest to anyone building a k2..) so i took some extra time getting the manual all set up... i have finished the controller board, and the front panel, and got it all mounted and ready to rock... all resistance checks passed with flying colors.. my comments so far on the building: when i first thought about building a k2, i thought that i would be shipped a bag of millions of toroids and 200 different types of wire to wind a bunch of exotic eyeball busters.. not the case.. without counting.. it looks like cake.. since i built the k1 first, i kinda learned the 'elecraft way' on that one first.. and made a few mistakes by not following the 'elecraft way..' when it came to building the k2, i just relaxed, and used the force, and there were no problems.. let me explain briefly what i mean by 'the elecraft way'.. the manuals are so easy to follow, and so complete, that you are always tempted to second guess them (mostly if you have built other electronics kits in the past). to think ahead of the manual, and goof something up.. to worry about weird part numbers, and not relax.. once you realize that a complete parts inventory (with pictures and alternate part numbers!), a complete schematic, building photos, and TONS of other goodies are in the manual, you should have no problems.. all that being said.. the k2 is fun to build so far.. and a breeze... i am hoping to get to the next testing phase after i go to the movies tonight.. elecraft should make hifi gear, too.. that would rock.. anyway.. 72 de kb8qpt.. -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] control boards - wire jumpers R18 and R19
Those are just jumper wires in the audio path (see the schematic), so there is nothing special about them other than that they need to exist. If you plan to install either the KAF2 or the KDSP2, intall the jumpers so that you can easily remove them. In fact, if you have the KAF2 or KDSP2 kit in hand, you may want to consider installing the headers and then put in temporary jumpers. one thing that makes this really easy is the rework free kit that allows you to build your k2 ready to accept all the options as you are ready to install them without doing rework on your boards.. you can see more info here... http://www.unpcbs.com/ -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] spectrogram for mac or linux?
i STILL haven't started the build on my k2 yet, as i have been too busy playing with my k1.. anyway.. when it comes time to align the filters, i don't have a windows machine anywhere.. is there a suitable program for mac or linux? thanks! -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] N-GEN, DL1
complete at least three working rigs before I attempt to build the K1. Any suggestions for beginner kits as a prelude to building the K1 would be welcome. my biggest advice would be... take you time.. don't try to second guess the manual.. read the section you are building first.. all the way through.. then start building.. and relax... these kits rock.. 72 de kb8qpt -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] k1 is FIXED.. and running again..
thanks so much to n0ss.. his website and his patience.. i got my K1 fixed, and running like a champ! i tried to get on the bands, but 40 seemed REALLY crowded.. and no one was calling cq.. and i think i may have accidentally stepped on someone.. but i heard signals like MAD! now.. to crack open that box and start building the K2!!! see you on the air.. 72 de kb8qpt -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] k1 - no signals - made progress - need help..
thanks no N0SS, i have finally narrowed down where my problems on my k1 are.. in signal tracing, i actually heard TONS of signals through my radio.. i have a feeling that it has been broken since day 1... i can't WAIT to get this fixed and on the air.. i have never heard so many signals on my radio.. WOW! anyway.. here's where i am now.. test point 1 - T1.. CHECK! test point 2 - D5... CHECK! test point 3 - J2-1 ... P2-1 BAD BAD BAD!! okay... so i found that on the front side of D5, i got a signal.. on the back site.. B!!! no signal.. the first thing i did was replace D5 and D14.. of course, i should have read N0SS's full document first.. but .. well, you know.. so i replaced the diodes, and got the same results.. so then, i checked to see if there was 6V on the anode of D5.. NO DEAL.. out of curiosity, i checked D14, too.. and there was nowhere near 6V here, either.. then, i did all the voltage checks at the test points on the manual, and everything was good.. i then checked the 8V and 6V voltage regulators according to the manual.. and they checked out fine.. does anyone have any hints? i have a feeling this is gonna be like a new radio! thanks! 72 de kb8qpt -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] k1 - no signals - made progress - need help..
In RX mode, you should (I believe) have something less than 6VDC... it starts out as 6VDC from 6R/AUX, but might be lower by the time it gets to the anode of D5. HOW LOW was the voltage on the anode of D5 in RX mode? hi, tom.. just checked the voltage.. on the anode side of D5, i am getting somewhere around -0.1v.. which is really weird to me.. on the cathode side, i get 0v... -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] k1 - frequency range..
when i built my k1, i set it up for the 150khz range.. looking back at my manual, it says that it is strongly advised to use the 80khz range.. is it strongly enough advised for me to mod my machine and put it back to the 80khz range? thanks! -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] k1 - not able to align..
when i ordered my k2, i also ordered the noise generator... i ordered this to help align my k1 that i have been having problems with.. on the k1, i am missing all sorts of signals that my cheapie regen receiver is hitting loud and clear.. i am not sure what i am supposed to hear from the noise generator, but it sorta sounds like loudish static, BUT. even connecting the output to the input of my regen, i don't really hear anything.. anyway.. i had the internal tuner installed, so i took it out, and jumpered the board back to k1.. then, i put jumpred pins 2 and 10 on j2(i think it's j2)... anyway... on all bands but 18mhz, i just can't seem to peak the receiver.. 18mhz peaks really well.. and i am comfortable that it's correct.. the rest are just guesses.. anyone have any ideas? thanks! -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] k1 - changing to 80 khz range..
while i have my k1 opened to the hilt.. i am thinking about making a few more changes. i think i made a few bad judgment calls when first built the radio.. i would like to: change to the 80khz range.. change the edge of 18hmz to 18.1mhz.. i could probably backtrack and make the change, but i would rather find something that is spelled out for me so i don't goof anything up by overlooking something.. is there such a document out there that elecraft puts their seal of approval on? thanks! -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
