Re: [Elecraft] What became of the Elecraft's KPA1500 and KPA 800

2010-02-07 Thread westalto

Frankly, It seems to me that good QRO amps are a glut on the market. (see THP,
etc.)

To be competitive in that market, any Elecraft offering would have to be highly

innovative and I just don't see much more that can be done.

YES!  That is exactly the question I would like to ask. I very much
looked forward to the release a couple of years ago, and now you can't even
get a comment from Elecraft about the situation.

IMO, QRO is much more important than all these trivial little toys
they are building now. I have a much more pressing need for a KPA- than
I do a panadapter (with limited features) and a wattmeter. I have a very
nice panadapter that has rig control from the computer, and it didn't cost
700 bucks, and I can control it with the MOUSE.

Wayne/Eric, how about some comments on this subject. At least tell
us what the future holds for the KPAs. I'm holding off buying a new amp till
the KPAs are released.

What happened to the Elecraft Amps?  Did they get beyond 'proto: gee I want

Re: [Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?

2010-01-11 Thread westalto

Prior to the advent of , first, the K2 and then the K3

I owned my share of huge radios which almost

required two men and a small boy to move.

(well I exaggerate ) and I well remember having to

hand carry a TS-930 through the length of the

St. Louis airport on my way to KP4...not a lot of

fun!

I find the K3 pretty  much the ideal size for my

purposes. The front panel is not cluttered but

comprehensive enough that there is little need

for daily changes to menu items.

I am glad that my K3 doesn't weight in excess of 50 lbs.  I have to

hand for the ladder and one for the K3.  I do this several times a

In VK we have a GST exemption from the US provided the goods value (including
freight) does not exceed $1,000.00 Australian Dollars. If the item(s) exceed
this amount, then a GST of 10 percent is applied.

But the freight charges from the US for say an Ameritron 811H amplifier will be
added to the sell price of around $800.00 (depending on where you shop) will
likely end up at around $1,250.00 or thereabouts.

Dealers in VK regularly advertise these amplifiers for $1,799 plus freight, or
in one case $1,899.00 delivered anywhere in VK.

Even the most liberal thinker would question the difference. Yes the seller
will have a list of reasons ready to offer the customer who dares to ask why
the price is so high.

Customs clearance charges, freight cost's as all this gear comes air freight,
GST and warranty allowance etc. Sounds good, till you need to claim on the
warranty...(:-))

YMMV

Brian, the designer gave me the impression that the
rig isn't really designed for contesting but, more for
 rag chewing and leisurely operating.

The Sienna's front panel is gorgeous, definitely the most attractive and
innovative of any rig. You can order one in any color you'd like for an extra
fee. Quite a bit of work went into that rig's face: the knobs, the display.
Really cool.

Frankly I see no problem with the way it is currently

implemented. I find a really simple way to get back into

the desired band segment is to make sure that the B

Another friend has a TS 2000 which is 'prettier' maybe..but I wouldn't
trade my K3 for three of them. It's  also 'prettier' to move the K3 on the
operating desk or  take to FD than one of the 50-60 lb giants. I couldn't care
less what it  looks like on the outside anyway. I care what  the insides DO.
I'm not a full contester but a DXer.  Just my opinion.

[Elecraft] What do you WANT??

2009-09-19 Thread westalto

I continue to be amazed at the amount of bitching about

the firmware mods / upgrades. If tho se other JA radios

are superior then for heavens sake buy one! Of course

if you should need service, package it up, pay huge

shipping charges (they weigh a ton) and wait 3 months

(my experience with an IC-765) for a radio that STILL

didn't work!

Yes, I too would like to see EQ as a function of mode

and sync AM. Are these show stoppers?
Certainly not and if they were. what radio would I buy

with these features, and the rest of the K3 performance,

at anywhere  near the cost of the K3?? As basically a CW

type, I can't get excited about mods to audio improvments

but, hey, these people bought the radio too!

I can think of no other brand that has the user response

and service that Elecraft provides.

[Elecraft] Fwd: [Elecraft_K3] Filter Confusion

2009-08-11 Thread westalto

Jim... The XTAL filters ARE the roofing filters. Due to the low IF in the K3 it
is

possible to provide very narrow filters rather than the wide filters in the

conventional YaKenIc radios with higher IFs. The ultimate selectivity as

determined by the DSP filtering, which is perfectly adequate. Unless you

live in an environment or operate in high QRM situations (e.g. contests)

you can probably get away with the stock filter for SSB and perhaps the

400 or 500 Hz filter for CW. If you're interested in AM you will need either
the

6 or 16 kHz filters. My filters are 2.7, 6, 1000Hz and 500 Hz. I actually have

the 400 Hz also but find that I prefer the 500.

When you configure the radio you specify which filter is in which slot (up to
5).

You can select which filter you want to use by stepping through the choices

by using the XFIL button. Also, when you select a bandwidth with the DSP

the radio automatically selects the appropriate roofer.

Hope this helps.

As I read in the owners manual the Xtal filters are the roofing filters.. Also
mentioned is the availability of a variable bandwidth filter due to the low IF
Freq.. I guess that is from someone else other than Elecraft ???

I expected to see a button marked roofing filter and then select the predefined
width ie. 3,6  or 16. Guess thats not the way it is.. I am confused over the
roofing filter implementation. Is there a true roofing filter and is there a
variable receive bandwidth adjustment for SSB or is everything governed by the
1st IF xtal filter I purchase ??

Sorry if I am not explaining myself well.  I plan to order later this week and
want to make SURE what I am purchasing. I downloaded and read the assembly and
owners manuals but probably missed info. One other item. It seems one needs a
dummy load to finish xmit setup. Well I sold mine YEARS ago. Is there a way
around my having to purchase one ?

Thanks, Jim K3QYR

Re: [Elecraft] Another K3 on TV

2009-06-30 Thread westalto

A really well done piece. Both the hams and the reporters spoke well

with enthusiasm and accuracy. I'm surprised that they got so much

air time. Very good PR.

Re: [Elecraft] solid state hf amp

2009-06-13 Thread westalto

I've used an Ameritron / MFJ ALS-600 for about 5 years and it works well. Also
have the

Ameritron QSK-5 pin diode switch, a nice combo that gives you full QSK.
However, if

you need customer service, forget it!

BTW, I noticed in the latest QST that Array Solutions has a QSK box that looks
like

a QSK-5 but uses a high speed vacuum relay rather than pin diodes. If the relay
is

quiet I think it should be more robust than the diodes.

Another vote for Tokyo Hy-Power. I have an HL-1.5 KFX and I love it. Works
beautifully with the K3, and awesome support from Tokyo Hy-Power including

Also, isn't an exchange of signal reports traditionally considered a

I remember as a new young licensee in the 1950s we used to work

Hi Don,

You're right: HI SWR is a transitory message. It should probably
switch to a permanent message (ERR SWR), requiring a switch tap to
clear, if the conditions persists long enough to force a drop into QRP
mode.

I do believe that the K3 cut power because the SWR on the antenna port
went too high. No I never saw any error message at any time. And that
 is
my point and basis for the request to have an error message for this
condition. Scanning the list of error messages on page 64 of the user
manual dated January 2009, I do not see any error message that states
that the SWR was detected to be too high.

Please let me know if you do implement such an error message.

Larson..so glad to hear from you again, its been such a long time!

I really thought it unfair that you pulled so much prison time for that

stock you sold in your underground antenna scheme.

Anyway. hope to hear more from you.

Elecraft is working on a firmware update which will enable the K3's 800w or
1500w feature. I believe some minor changes to the DC power input will be
required however, cooling is already adaquate. No external hardware will be
necessary and the update is free. The firmware update for the panadapter
activation has been the hold up. It's been a well guarded secret but
information is leaking about how the K3's current display is capable of
displaying any portion of a given band once the new FW is installed. The
current default display will be minimized to one corner of the screen and
the remaining area will become the scope. One can toggle between display
modes by programing one of the PF keys and shortly thereafter we can expect
the multicolor display firmware update.

 Hi Bill,

I haven't seen any indication that they have decided to end the
amplifier projects. The amps likely would have been out but for the
regulation changes as the RoHS changes.

Yes I know about the almost finished state before FCC regulations
changed and RoHS was introduced. And if this had not happened, they
may well have seen the light of day. To this we can agree.

However based on the last two years of K3 craziness, the panadapter
development work and so on, as well as my reading between the lines
(Aptosology is a bit like Kremlinology back in the 70s) of public and
private mails, I get the gut feeling that the KPA800 KPA1500 amps in
their *current* state won't come to market. I would not be surprised
if Elecraft in the medium to distant future has reworked/redesigned
QRO amplifiers in their product range.

I suppose your guess is as good or as bad as mine.
