Yaesu had the FT-5k on display at the Charlotte fest. I got a
close up look. Ergos are great with huge knobs etc.

The FT-5000 was also on display at Orlando and I can't agree
that ergonomics are good. The three almost identical knobs for
VFO B frequency, and multi-function shift/width/notch for the
main and sub receivers are very confusing. Labels on the
other controls are very hard to read under reduced lighting
conditions. The FT-5000 perpetuates the FT-2000 ergonomic
error of placing the sub RX gain controls to the left of the
main RX gain controls when Sub Rx frequency control (VFO B) is
to the right of the main VFO ... and compounds the error by
returning the RX B shift/width/notch control to the right!

For all the buttons and knobs, control placement and the
multi-function shift/width/notch controls promise to make
the FT-5000 more difficult to operate than the K3.

I agree with Joe. Considering how much front panel real estate was
available, I think they did a poor job with ergonomics. In particular, poor
ergonomics in the compartmentalization of controls/displays and ability to
only read one parameter at a time within those compartmental displays.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] FT-5000 vs. K3

2010-03-23 Thread W6NEK
Hi Steve,
I own a fully loaded K3 with a LP-PAN/PSDR panadapter. I agree, the
LP-PAN/PSDR combo make existing panadapters on most rigs a joke. 192 KHz
bandwidth, sensitivity down to -140 dbm and frequency resolution down to 10
Hz all in real time, at a screen refresh rate of up to 50 fps. Add serial
port through LP_Bridge and you have point-n-click rig control for ultimate
search and pounce operation.

I also purchased the FTdx5000MP. It came with the matching SM-5000 Station
Monitor. After using the K3/LP-PAN/PSDR combo and comparing it to the scope
display on the SM-5000 I too must admit that the SM-5000 is very
disappointing. There are a few restricted bandwidth modes that improve the
displayed sweep speed at the sacrifice of displayed bandwidth but the
overall performance is poor at best. So in the words of Tim Allen (1990's
Tool Time TV Show) I rewired it! With the help of Larry (N8LP) I ordered a
LP-PAN unit with a Xtal that supports the FT5000 9 MHz IF output. Larry
delivered the assembled unit to me within a week. My FT5000 with
LP-PAN/PSDR works FB (same functionality as with my K3/PSDR combo). The
panadapter on my FT5000 is no longer a joke or disappointment.

Since I was the first to get LP-PAN/PSDR working on the FT5000, Larry asked
if I would send him a photo of the station to post on his web site.
http://www.telepostinc.com/LP-PAN.html I also uploaded a PDF file to
Larry's site that shows photos of the SM-5000 display compared to the
LP-PAN/PSDR tuned to the same frequency and both set to 100 KHz bandwidth.
The link is located right below the photo of my station at the link above.

I love my K3 and now that I have LP-PAN/PSDR on the FT5000, I'm acquiring
the same affection for it too. The scope has so much impact on my operating
performance that I'll never again purchase any rig that isn't provisioned
for one. I need my Radio Eyes.

Best 73,
Frank - W6NEK

I hate to be a party-pooper but comparisons like this really don't tell much of

I wasted time listening to five of the recordings, and

was not the same?

I'd like to hear a $6K radio but not through a $3 mic. :-)

[Elecraft] [OT] FT-5000 vs. K3

2010-03-11 Thread K2QI
I'm curious if anyone on the reflector has had the opportunity to have a
hands-on with the new Yaesu FT-5000 now that they're available for sale.
I'm also wondering if there have been any direct performance comparisons
made between these two radios.

The FT5K certainly looks nice from an ergonomics perspective; particularly
if you like full-sized rigs and you have a desk that can support the weight,
hi. Just going by the numbers, the 5K looks like a serious competitor to
the K3. Personally, I don't have the room, nor the money to buy an FT-5000,
but it sure is nice to look at.

I wouldn't put much stock in *any* performance measurements other than ARRL,
RSGB (Radcom), Sherwood or W2VJN (if George still does them).

The 5000's Main RX should be very comparable to the K3 but the Sub RX will
likely be less due to using up-conversion (similar to Orion's Sub RX). It
remains to be seen if they have a frequency offset in diversity which was a
problem with Orion. The 5000 does have some other nice features such as
200W, Class A SSB, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] FT-5000 vs. K3

2010-03-11 Thread Bill Gerth
There is a recent eHam.net review of the FT-DX5000 from K7ERQ who is
also a K3 owner. Somewhat general but a mostly favorable comparison
with the K3. K3UR also has an FT-DX5000 review at the same link and
he is a Flex-5000 user. Most FT-DX5000's have been in user hands for
less than a week so it is a bit early for detailed comparisons. Not
surprising that the K3 is still the standard of comparison.

Check it out at: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/8826

OK,

Let's sell the K3 and buy the FT5k.

It's perfectly clear.

Got one.
The FT5K is back in the box and the K3 is on the desk.
