Re: [Elecraft] K2 - RTTY walk through, connections, and software

2007-12-25 Thread rkayakr

David
The biggest problem with data modes on the K2 is getting the audio signal
in and out. Several people have suggested points in the K2 where you can tap
or inject signals. (see: the PSK section in General Modifications of
LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to Elecraft K2 Modifications
http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html)

I use a MicroHam Microkeyer. This provides isolation, switches the mic input
to Line In (and back to you actual mic for SSB) and audio out of the K2 by a
simple mod. Works well. I defined data mode filters centered at 1500 Hz and
created filters for PSK and RTTY. Also, most digital software can trigger
the K2 to transmit by serial command so you don't need a PTT hardwire line.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - RTTY walk through, connections, and software

2007-12-24 Thread David Wilburn
Just for giggles, I connected the headphone jack of the K2 to the input
of an external soundcard that I picked up yesterday. I have been able
to receive RTTY and PSK.

I was just curious, what all I need to do to transmit? I understand I
need PTT and get audio on the mic connector. If I picked up the
attenuator cable from radio shack, and then run it to mic audio, and
used a switch for PTT, would that get me to where I could transmit? I
have the 5.6k ohm resistor across the mic connections now, and I am
using the Elecraft hand mic.

I don't know if radio shack has audio transformers for isolation, but I
do not have mic connectors (fosters?). I would have to get that first,
not sure there are any around here.

Would this setup get me on the air for now? I will setup a more formal
arraignment once the K3 gets here.

I did hear a guy in Texas, said he was doing his first RTTY on his new
K3, talking to someone else, I think they had a K2. He said he was
sending with paddles. You could tell it was a bit slower than the
computer connection where someone was typing. But it came through fine.

Merry Christmas

Nope, that pretty much covers it.

1. Don't scrimp on the sound card, you get what you pay for.

2. I've read through the RTTY filter setting how to's. Somebody needs to
do a step by step like N0SS does for CW and SSB.

3. MicroHam makes some pretty good stuff. If they'd been around when I
got into the digi side of things I probably would have purchased an
interface from them instead of RigBlaster. Once again don't go cheap,
you get what you pay for. I know there will be folks who say build your
own. There is a world of difference between the home rolled interfaces
and the commercial variety from a quality and feature set point of view.

3A. If you're going to do SSB contesting get a DVK capable software
package or interface. The MkII MicroHam has one built in. I use the
computer and N1MM.

4. Take a look at contesting software like Writelog($$$) or N1MM(free)
which include RTTY capability, either through the MMTTY engine or natively.

[Elecraft] K2 - RTTY walk through, connections, and software

2007-12-17 Thread David Wilburn
I was planning on waiting till next year when the K3 gets here to play
with RTTY, but after seeing all the activity this past weekend I am
getting the itch. So I am trying to understand what I need to do to get
the K2 on RTTY, or if I am better off to wait. Separate from these
questions, I do need to re-visit the K2's alignment and filter settings.
It could use some attention, as I have learned more since I performed
the last ones after the SSB installation.

The long term view is that the K3 will become the primary operating /
contesting rig, and the K2 will be used as a back-up and to search for
other stations / multi's while in the contest. So I need to be
cognizant of how much I spend on a K2 only solution at this time.

I do understand I need the following;
* Computer, soundcard, and software
* K2 needs an alignment, and turn on and setting of the RTTY filters
* Interface between the computer and the K2
* RTTY software

Anything I didn't consider?

Currently my resources are a K2, and a deaf computer. So I know I need
to put a sound card in the computer. On a side note, I plan to use the
K3 for contesting, would I be better off to start looking at the
MicroHam products, and plan on migrating that from the K2 to the K3? I
am getting more and more into contesting, and I do not currently have a
voice keyer, or a way of keying the CW on the K2 from the computer. I
have some very nice responses from my CW K2 keying questions in my
Keepers folder, so I'm covered there. Just starting to think about
larger solutions that solve multiple issues at once.

Filter Setup

I have never done RTTY, so my search through the Elecraft archive was
fruitful, but I didn't quite understand the results. Has anyone done a
walk-through on the RTTY setup like currently exist from N0SS and W3FPR
for SSB and CW? Don's page describes settings for RTTY with a TNC.

I have seen notes in the archive about setting the RTTY mark and space.
Being new to this, not sure what I need to do here, but I got the
impression that I should set the passband for 1000 if possible, and 800
if not. Then use the RIT to try and tune the signal. Am I barking up
the right tree here?

Interface
=
I picked up Don's line out card to get the output for digital modes, but
I am not going to have time to get that together, and revisit the
alignments, between now and the ARRL RTTY activity in January.

There are many quick and easy commercial interfaces, from low cost to
quite expensive, but also with increasing capabilities. Once again,
because of the ability to migrate it to the K3, and I am thinking about
going ahead and investing in the MicroHam, if that meets the needs.

Software

With RTTY, do they do the logging with the RTTY software? Any
recommendations concerning software? I have been using the N3FJP
programs for contesting, and logging, but I am starting to use N1MM for
contest logging.
