Re: [Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
Hi John - the front panel message FP.H b1 A5 really is FP. (means Front Panel Mic Connection) H (means high sensitivity) and the b1 A5 is just an attempt to write the word bias within the limitations of the LCD display! That is b = b, 1 = i, A = a, and 5 = s. You are not the first one to be confused with the b1 A5! This means that you have bias turned on and that is why you are hearing a noise from the mic. Turn bias off - this is done by tapping either the 1 or the 2 (not in front of radio right now) when you are in this menu mode. You might want to consider updating to the latest firmware. Re: [Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
Well, it might go so far back as SN#671. I'm brand new at this, so I have spent the past 12 hours trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. My Heil pro-set plus plugged into a kenwood adapter into the front. With RP.H it works fine, FP.H/L As soon as I plug in the stereo headphone part into the adapter the TX light comes on and stays on until I unplug it. It cant even send my voice, just locks everything up. Plugging it into the phones right above, again, it works fine. Is this the problem with the traces or can I just not RTFM? -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3%3A-R-MH2-mic-problems-tp16917192p16926172.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: Re:[Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
I'm guessing here - but - it sounds like you might have the bias turned on to the K3 mic connector. Heil HC-4 elements do NOT require bias and putting bias on them will usually (have to file the usually caveat here as there may be some strange wiring involved) prevent them from working! Let's try this: 1. Tap - Menu (the display will probably show a number 6 on the upper line and LCD BRT on the lower line - at least mine always seems to come up that way if enough time has gone by since I used it last). Regardless of what the display defaults to, after you have tapped Menu do the following: 2. Rotate VFO B knob to until you see: MIC SEL on the LOWER line. The UPPER line will display the current mic settings: 3. If the UPPER line shows something like: FP.H(or L) followed by a space and then the word bias you have the bias turned on for the mic input selected (either FP for Front or RP for rear). 4. If the word bias shows up, then you do indeed have the bias turned on. 5. If the bias is turned on, then TAP the REV button (it has a red #2 in small print under it) once and the word bias will disappear. NOTE: The REV button alternately turns the bias to the mic connector on and off. 6. If the top line now shows something like FP.H with nothing following it, you have selected the Front panel mic input (the FP) and have selected high gain ( the H). You can change from H to L by tapping the A/B button (it has a small red #1) under it. On my both my HC-4 and HC-5 elements, I use the H setting and adjust the MIC gain accordingly. If the bias is not turned on, then all the above is not going to solve your problem. If this is true, the 8 pin plug on your mic is likely wired in some strange way. Please give it a go and report back. As usual, YMMV. [Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
I've just completed assembly of K3 #688 for a friend. Building it was a joy, aside from a couple of little screw-ups of mine, and having to compress some turns on one torroid. The support guys are OUTSTANDING at answering questions and providing solutions!!! But they are off for the weekend, so I'm here asking for some help. I have hooked up my trusty Kenwood mic that I use occasionally with my K2 and it works fine from the K3 front panel connector. My friend bought the R-MH2 mic, so I thought I'd set it up, but I am having no luck. Its like I'm getting RF feedback somehow. I've got the menu entry MIC SEL set to FP.H BIAS, and the MIC gain setting set to 10 and CMP set to 0. While in TEST mode (no RF), the ALC bumps up to about 5 bars and my voice sounds more-or-less normal (I'm not used to listening to it) over the MON function. When I go out of TEST at 50w, my voice sounds very distorted and the power output indication on the K3 display doesn't follow my voice but seems to either go high (50w) or very low. Again, all of the above works just fine with my Kenwood mic. The clincher is that if I transmit into a dummy load, the MH2 works fine. Got to be RF feedback, right? Why would it effect the MH2 and not my Kenwood mic? Any suggestions? 73, Randy, KS4L ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems
Sure sounds like RF getting into the mic circuit but to prove it check to see if the 'feedback' distortion occurs on 160 meters where, normally, RF is far less intrusive and/or with reduced power output. I use my MH2 with my K3 with Mic Sel set to ' FP.L bias ' because I found that the FP.H setting was providing too much gain in the mic amplifier which caused distortion but that was detectable in the monitor with no RF output. BE SURE TO CHECK TO BE SURE THE SHELL OF THE MIC CONNECTOR is actually grounded. There was a thread recently where some folks were getting RF problems due to excessive paint in the hole which mounted the mic connector which caused an open ground to the shell of the connector. Now that I think about it that sounds like the likliest cause. Don K7FJ The clincher is that if I transmit into a dummy load, the MH2 works fine. Got to be RF feedback, right?
