[Elecraft] K3: switching on click -- One wonders...

2011-09-05 Thread Edward R. Cole
First off, I am not using an amplified speaker; it is a National
Receiver speaker from circa 1950's. I have used it with my FT-847
for years before getting the K3 (#4340) in 2010. Never popped like
the K3. In fact none of the ham radios that I have owned since my
first one in 1958 ever did this (so much for your theory this is common).

Its not a thump on my K3, it is a sharp POP. Sometimes a double
POP-POP. You can duplicate what is sounds like by applying 24vdc,
momentarily, to any common 4 or 8-ohm speaker. If it doesn't destroy
the speaker coil in the process it will give you a very loud sharp
pop! The internal speaker also pops at start up. In the headphones
it is also there but not as loud. Audio gain control has no effect on it.

My home theater 200w receiver does have a low thump in the speaker
when turned on, but not a sharp pop, and not as loud.

I haven't mentioned this until this thread came up, but I was
certainly alarmed the first time I turned on the radio. MY power
supply is a 50amp Astron analog supply - if that matters. Again
neither the FT-847 or FT-817 exhibit any sound when turned on except
radio noise and/or signals.

Some have suggested turning off the speaker. Well, that is kind of
hard since the mini-phone plug has wires directly to the speaker
coil. Again it is a plain speaker - no amplifiers.

The only way for me to mute the radio is to make a 555 timer to
control a relay to disconnect the speaker during start up. But that
will not silence the snap at shut down. I guess if it irritates me
enough I can mount a switch on the speaker to disconnect it
(providing I remember every time I turn on/off the radio).

This is all I am going to say on the subject. I will leave it in
Elecraft hands at this point.

Hi All!

I know we've milked this one quite a bit, but I do have a point to
make that I think will frame this "power-on thump" issue in a little
better light...

First off, I have K3 #3019 and there is a very detectable power-on
AND power-off thump in the built-in speaker and in the cans. I don't
have external speakers so I can't say about that.

BUT, what I wanted to point out is that this behavior, this power-on
and power-off click or thump is widespread and not strictly a K3
problem. While there are others on this list with way more
experience in the field of audio, I can say that in my younger days I
was very much an audiophile. I can tell you with certainty that all
the high end audio equipment I owned (and wished I owned!) thumped
when powering on and powering off.

Outside of my own equipment, I have worked mixing boards and
commercial sound systems which all thumped on power-on/off. Some
loud enough to nearly blow your hair off.

I have even witnessed this in concert halls -- I'm thinking, as one
example, of the Pacific Amphitheater one night in LA which very
clearly had the power-on/off thump. I can think of others probably
if I worked my brain cell really hard.

The point is that this phenomenon seems to be part and parcel of the
powering-on and powering-off of solid state audio amplification. As
this exists in the high quality and commercial equipment I've had the
pleasure of working with, I don't feel it detracts from the K3. I
think the K3 is actually in pretty good company.

I know that being common doesn't make it right...but it probably does
indicate that most in the business don't regard it as particularly important.

IMHO if it costs more than a nickel to fix, I wouldn't
bother. However I understand that others, perhaps with amplified
speakers, are well within their rights to feel differently. :-)

Alrighty then...back to the honey-do list...

Dave AH6TD

I can think of a fair number of power amplifiers and mixing board
monitor amplifiers that include *delay relays* in the speaker lines
that leave the speakers disconnected for two to three seconds after
power is turned on specifically to prevent the thump (and potential
damage to speakers and/or hearing).

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Alan Slusher
K3 Serial 2554: K2 Serial 868.
Very, very soft pops (start-up and shut-off) here on the K3; much softer
than the pops on the K2. The pops on both radios (internal speaker or
headphones) are considerably softer than the sound volume when signal
reception starts. I do not have an external speaker connected to either
radio.
I had not regarded this as a problem, and still do not.

Cheers,

[Elecraft] Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Edward R. Cole
I have K3 #4340 (kit) which I purchased in spring 2010 and it has a
LOUD POP at power up every time. I have it connected to an external
speaker (plain speaker not an amplified one - ten inch diameter and
probably 4-ohm resistance). I also note this in the internal speaker
if not connected to external speaker. I does this even with audio
gain at minimum. There is a shorter snap when I shut down. Guessing
discharge of electrolytics in the audio amp?

The loudness of the pop is about the audio level one hears if the
audio gain is advanced to 3-o'clock (75% full gain). There is an
audible snap in my headphones (plugged into the front jack) at power
on. The speaker is muted when I use headphones so I can hear the
mild click of a relay at power on if I do not have on the
headphones. I do not hear the relay due to the loud POP if speaker is used.

I kind of ignore it but I worry about turning on the radio late at
night as the loudness of the pop is heard in the bedroom across the
hall with both doors closed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: switching on click -- One wonders...

2011-09-04 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I suppose the "click" - or in my case a "thump" - depends on the timing
of the "mute" signal from the controller and the value of the bypass
capacitor on pin 8 of the speaker amplifier. The chip manufacturer
recommends 10 uF for the bypass capacitor but I notice that Elecraft
use 3.3 uF in the K3. The manufacturer's data sheet shows:

  Cb (uF) Ton (Ms)
   1.0 120
   2.2 120
   4.7 200
  10.0 440

The manufacturer's data sheet also calls for the time constant of the
input coupling capacitor and Ri+Rf (input and feedback resistors of
the amplifier) to be less than the turn on time set by Cb. In the
K3, I don't know how critical the ratio of input time constant to
turn on time is but the reference design has an input time constant
less that 5% of the turn on time while in the K3 the input time
constant is about 30% of the turn on time.

In addition, I suspect there may be some variation in early vs. late
production due to the change in the DC resistance of the RF choke in
the DC line feeding the speaker amplifier.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

If you are using amplified speakers, that difference is to be expected.
I use unamplified speakers, and all that is heard is a muffled couple of
pops - it is not in the range of anything annoying to me.

You are hearing the large value capacitor in the AF output charge up
(the capacitor is not as large in the headphone amp in the K3, and the
amp is a different one).

The K2 does the same thing - and at my workbench I do use amplified
speakers - yes, it can be annoying with amplified speakers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Bill K9YEQ
I have external speakers connected through the headphone jack and have zero
snap, crackle or Pop :-) Just for grins, I moved the output to the line
out jack and did create the Pop on turn on. Without the external setup, I
do get an internal speaker pop, but nothing objectionable. With stereo
output to amplified stereo speakers when plugged into the external speakers
or the phones jack on the front panel, I don't get any POP. Therefore, to
remove the pop with the internal speaker, plug into the external speaker
jack or the front phone plug... I guess... ;-)

Agreed: the K3 attracts radio amateurs who are in pursuit of
in that special sense which Pirsig spends half the book explaining.

I thought Elecraft genuinely understood that, but as the K3 has moved
into mainstream production with so many of its initial problems still
unaddressed, I'm becoming far less sure.

"Operation of K3 radio require great peace of mind"... but we're still
not being given that.

Makes no difference and "auto off" is a flaming PITA! It means that
the radio is never in the same state as the user left it - a major
violation of the "no unexpected behavior" rule.

Sam,

I'm guided by 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. The K3 is one
great radio, but the snap crackle and pop (even with the built-in speaker)
put my teeth on edge, it's as simple as that. It's like a loud start-up
rattle on an otherwise fine engine. If you haven't read the book, it's a
fine read, in fact as it says on the cover, it changed my life!

I shan't be selling the K3, in fact I have the KX3 in my sights now, not
to mention the KPA500, and the ATU!

End of thread, unless Wayne or Eric would care to comment ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Stephen Prior
I'm using amplified speakers too, and also plugged into the stereo speaker
jack. I'm hearing far more than just one pop, but about 4 in total, one
before the relays start switching and then the other pops/clicks over the
next second or so, even with the AF gain on the radio turned down
to minimum. Clearly I seem to have a more severe case than some, but I'm not
worried about it, just curious. As Ramiro said, it doesn't match with a
quality radio. If I had a motorbike though, I'd rather it sounded like a
Harley than a Honda!!

Changing the subject completely, I just worked 5B4AIF on 21MHz ssb (very
rare mode for me!) on 100mW output to a doublet. At least the mojo is still
working!!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Sam Morgan
I hear clicks also
but they are directly from the K3
like relays getting themselves set where they should be

then I hear one pop from the
amplified stereo computer speakers
I have plugged into the stereo speaker jack in back

Hi Sam

That does make a difference, but there is still a pronounced series of
clicks over the second or so it takes the K3 to boot up. Thanks for
alerting me to that anyway.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: switching on click

2011-09-04 Thread Stephen Prior
I confess that it never really bothered me until I started to use external
speakers, and when I use head phones the K3 gets turned on before I put the
headphones on.

I bought the K3 a couple of years ago, it's #980. Maybe something in the
hardware has changed since. It's no big deal, I was just curious as to what
others thought.

I near nothing but the soft mechanical click of a relay before the audio
appears at the speakers. Mine was bought and built in June 2011.

turn on click through the loudspeaker. When connected to external speakers,
the click is loud and out of character with the quality feel of the radio.
It would be a good idea in my opinion if the audio output were to be muted
for a fraction of a second after the K3 is turned on.
