[Elecraft] K3 - I wonder

2010-06-03 Thread Jim Miller KG0KP
I wonder if it would be possible..

to capture the settings that are being changed by any button press on the K3
front panel (commands from a control program too?) and save them in a stack 2
or 3 button presses deep..

Then I could have the oops key I need so often to get back to the way it was
before I hit the wrong key again.

This could also be used as quick switch to most anything just to look and
then back again.

Oh, well, just wondering (or wandering, hi).

Hello Jim,

You can save personal settings with K3 utility.

You can restore from there if you have any problem in the future

That has been my wonder as well since I own this wonderful radio,a way to
change quickly from let say dx to ragchewing to see the radio moving
quicker from one set of settings to the other and not trough the Utilities that

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - I wonder

2010-06-03 Thread Phil Hystad
This could very easily be a nice K3 Utility feature. Actually, a good model
for this feature is found in MS Visual Studio 2010 (and, earlier versions).
This allows the setup of the Visual Studio software to be saved in a file so
that it can be restored at a later time or even shared with others. Aspects of
how this might work on the K3 can almost use the Visual Studio feature as a
design pattern -- I am sure that the author of the K3 Utility (on Windows) uses
Visual Studio.

But, one of the nifty features of this settings save and restore thing is that
you can limit the scope of the save and restore to a subset of all of the
settings. Via a selection process that is part of the save or restore, you can
select various options or subsets of options to be affected. Thus, you don't
run into the hassle of overwriting some other setting that you want to keep
when you reclaim some other alternative setting.

I can see it now -- this Elecraft forum will become a great trading ground for
settings files. Sure, there are possibly some arcane settings to achieve
some kind of performance or feature but no bother, there is a file that does
that for you.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - I wonder

2010-06-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Wayne and David and I have made dramatic improvements to the speed of
configuration save and restore in upcoming K3 Utility versions (that depend
on recent MCU versions). It will take on the order of 5 seconds to save and
10 seconds to restore a configuration (once you've selected the
configuration file), and half of that is the MCU reset after restore.

Not every K3 front panel key press is currently available for an undo
stack. In particular, when I enter a menu and change a parameter, nothing is
sent to the PC host to alert it to a configuration change.

Few of us (including me) would be willing to keep a program like the K3
Utility connected to the radio during all radio operation to support an undo
stack.

During contests, my contest logging program controls the radio. At other
times it might be connected to a DX logging program.

Yes, I use Visual Studio. I'm stuck at VS 2005 because that's the last
version that compiles code that will run on Windows 98 SE / ME.

Phil, you should be aware that the Microsoft Visual Studio Program
Management / Development / Test / Customer Support team is a tad larger than
the K3 Utility, P3 Utility, K144XV Utility, W2 Utility, K3 Voice, and K3
Frequency Memory Editor team.

And there are cost/revenue issues. Visual Studio's features must be
whiz-bang to gather developer hearts and minds so that applications will be
written for Windows.

Not too many chose the Elecraft K3 over its competitors because of a
feature-rich K3 Utility. The K3 Utility needs to do a few jobs reliably. If
it were terrible, it could hurt customer satisfaction with the K3. It must
be simple to use so that occasional users can get firmware loaded with a
minimum of fuss.

I use Visual Studio all the time. It's a pretty feature rich environment.
And the learning curve was non-trivial.

Elecraft sells amateur radio equipment. The K3 Utility is offered to
customers without additional charge. It's a necessary adjunct to enable
customers to update the radio's firmware. The K3 Utility is not a revenue
source for Elecraft. Visual Studio (even with free Express editions) is
most certainly a revenue source for Microsoft.
