[Elecraft] K3 Tune power issue on 15M only.

2013-12-28 Thread Randy Diddel
Hello Elecrafters,

I have been spending some quality time tuning my vertical and getting the
bands closer to resonance today. I have gone into the Config Menu and
specified Tune Power to 10 W. All bands, 80-6 obey the setting BUT 15M, no
matter what setting 10, 25, 50, 100W, or NOR, it shows 100W output on the
LCD. I don't have a wattmeter so I cannot verify if this is true or not.
Bug, known issue, or undocumented feature?

Latest and greatest firmware, DSP, etc.

Thanks, HNY, and 73

2013-12-28 Thread Randy Diddel
Hello,

More info. I have checked the decimal point per one suggestion. I also
now noticed that running JT65 on 15M, it claims 100 watts (full power) even
if I set the power of the KPA3 to 15 watts. If I disable the KPA3 and run
the K3 at 10W is shows 10W. Looks like a PA problem of some kind.

Odd.

2013-12-28 Thread Randy Diddel
After re-loading the firmware twice and restoring my factory settings, all
is right with the K3. Still a strange thing. I guess all troubleshooting
starts with a firmware reload (or two) HI.

Thanks Rick Bates for the input.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Tune power issue on 15M only.

2013-12-28 Thread Randy Diddel
It looks like I spoke too soon. As soon as I got all settings redone, it
went back into full power mode no matter what setting I chose from
(13W-100) so I ran the transmitter gain Calibration at both 5W and 50W.
Sure enough, it failed on 15M with the following:
 5 watt calibration succeeded
SWR 2.0-1 is too high for calibration
SWR too high to continue calibration
50 watt calibration failed

So naturally, I checked my dummy load's SWR at it is 1.3:1 across 15M. KAT3
ATU was bypassed as well. Something is definately up with the 15M part of
the KPA3. All other bands are healthy and happy at any power/mode setting.

Anyone got an idea on this one?

Good evening Dick,

Calibration did succeed on 17M and output is FB-no issues.

I have contacted support but thought I would continue to ask for help here.

 I'd contact K3 support.

There are band-specific low pass filters on the RF board that follow the
 KPA3.

How's your 17 meter output? It shares the same filter as 15 meters. Did
 the
calibration succeed on 17 meters? If it did, then it's probably not that
 low
 pass filter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Tune power issue on 15M only.

2013-12-28 Thread David Shoaf
Tx Gain Calibrations must be performed - a pass - at the 5W level before
proceeding to the 50W level. If the Tx Gain Cal failed at the 5W level on
one or more bands, odds are one of the output or the driver devices are
failing.

Re-run the 5W Tx Gain Cal, copy the results to an email and send it off to
Elecraft support for evaluation on Monday.

Cheers,

David
