[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-20 Thread Terry Schieler
Back in 2013, I purchased a custom shipping box from Dave Haller, KA1W, of
www.hamradioboxes.com with which to ship an Acom 1000 amplifier that I was
selling. It was pricy, but so was the amp. I would not have purchased one for
just a half a K3 round trip to Elecraft Service, but if you are doing
DXpeditions and moving your gear around regularly, his custom boxes were
outstanding.

Update: I did a quick Google search for Ham Radio Boxes and the most recent I
can find is from 2014 saying that Dave had taken a "temporary break" from the
box building business. Sad, as Dave was excellent to work with.

See my (and other) eHam review: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9938?page=2

You need to 'float' the item in a single shipping box. Select a box that is
at least 2" wider on each side, top and bottom and 3-4" wider front and
back. Get some solid Styrofoam insulation, preferably 2" thick; 1" thick
will work. Make a template of the rig's front or back for size. Measure the
inside of the box's front and back for height and width. With this
measurement cut two pieces of the Styrofoam board using utility knife.
Center the template from above on the Styrofoam board, mark and cut out the
opening. Slide the two Styrofoam boards onto the rig, say 1", one front and
one back. You may have to partially notch the board to accept the rigs feet.
It should be a firm fit. Place the rig into the box. It should be a firm fit
and the two Styrofoam board supports will 'float' the rig in the box.

The Styrofoam board support boards and rig need to be secured in place. Once
the rig is floating in the box, it will become obvious where additional
blocking needs to take place. Take other pieces of Styrofoam, cut to size to
go between the rigs front (2) and back (2), glued to the box, and resting on
the outside edges of the rig away from any knobs. This will prevent the rig
from sliding forward or rearward. Now take other pieces of Styrofoam, cut to
size and glue inside to the box sides (3 per side) to hold the Styrofoam
board supporting the rig in place. You can add bubble wrap, crumbled paper,
peanuts, foam to fill the openings, front, back, sides, top and bottom. I
also try to place the rig inside a plastic bag to reduce any chances of
scratching.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-18 Thread Brian Hemmis
Hi James, It might be simpler if you are not comfortable packing & shipping
gear to let the UPS or FedEx store pack and ship the radio. If they pack it “in
house” and there is any damage in shipping they will cover it 100% for whatever
you claim its value to be. I normally pack myself but a couple years ago I sold
an Alpha amp to a man half way across the country and let them pack it in 2
boxes as I didn’t have the original boxes. I’m guessing Elecraft will ship the
radio back in a proper K3 factory box.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ron,

With proper packing as I indicated in my post a few minutes ago, there
is not real need for double boxing. The important thing is that the
radio is not able to move in the box if subjected to an impact.

Rarely do I receive a damaged radio, and in all cases of damage
(normally minor), the radio moved within the box. Only rarely do I find
a damaged box, and usually that is normal "wear and tear" from handling.

I have most experience with USPS and UPS although sometimes FedEX.
Those carriers are good with packages, and as I said, only rarely do I
find damage, and in all cases that was caused by movement of the radio
in the box.

I have been shipping and receiving the Elecraft legacy gear since 2004,
and have never had a claim that was worth pursuing. It is easier to
just replace the BNC connector that contacted the packing box than to go
through the process of placing a claim.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

I don't know if you can get the box and spacers that Elecraft uses - you
can give them a call and ask. They use a box and dense foam supports
which fit the K3. After your K3's first trip to Elecraft, you will have
a box like that when it returns.

I ship a lot of radios (K1, KX1, K2 and XV series transverters), so I
have come to know what packing methods will work well and protect your K3.

The requirement for safe shipping (by all carriers I know of) is that
you have 2 inches of protection space on all sides between the radio and
the box.
The very most important aspect is that the radio cannot move in the box
if the box is subjected to a sudden stop at the end of a sorting ramp.

The K2 will meet those requirements by using a 16x16x8 box. Wrap the K3
in bubblewrap (using only a minimum amount of tape, it does not have to
be wrapped as a mummy), then put almost 2 inches of packing peanuts in
the bottom of the box. put the K2 in and fill the rest of the box with
packing peanuts. The bubblewrap is to keep the packing peanuts from
sticking to the K3.

If you do not have packing peanuts, put layers of bubblewrap to 2 inches
thick under the K3 and use crumpled newspaper to fill the rest of the
box. If you use crumpled newspaper, make sure there is enough tightly
packed at each of the K3 corners so the K3 cannot move in the box.

With an object as heavy as the K3, do not use the large air bags. While
they fill a lot of space, when pressure is applied, they can burst
leaving little protection.

You can always take your K3 to a shipping depot and they will package it
for you. But they will usually wrap the radio "like a mummy" with lots
of tape holding the bubblewrap - that gives the technician unwrapping it
fits to get all the wrapping off.
But the shipping depots are responsible for the safe packing of whatever
you are shipping. Yes, they charge for that service.

Suspect both are true to some extent. People (even hams) who CAN
afford to make large purchases are pulling back on doing so out of
fear of an unpredictable economic future, which is exactly what
the economy does NOT need right now. Deflation feeds itself on
fear, inflation feeds itself on greed...

I certainly wish Elecraft the best of luck. According to Eric's
last mention of this a couple months ago, the company has lots of
reserve cash and no debt.

Nope! We're just getting them out the door more efficiently.

We have been working very hard in Aptos these past months to get caught up and
eventually into a stocking situation for K3s (to satisfy the 'I want it now'
syndrome.. ;-)

We run the company very conservatively, which is serving us well in the current
economic environment.

[Elecraft] [K3] Shipping Status of the KDVR3

Hi,

According to http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_shipping_status.htm:

The KDVR3 has been released to production and
should be shipping in the next 4-5 weeks.
 (Mid-Late November.)

Now that we have reached Mid-November, is there any news when and if the
KDVR3 will start shipping?

I would simply love to receive mine in time for the ARRL 10m Contest in
December... ;-) But OTOH Elecraft shouldn't rush things, if the DVR is
not ready for prime time.

important that we get the lead time down to a very short time.

My intuition says you'll get a flurry of orders immediately after
announcing that K3s are shipping from stock. I know I was planning to
order one as soon as they are in stock, and I'm sure others are also.
Amateur radio has taken a back seat to other hobbies for the time being,
but if the bug bites hard again and K3s are in stock I'll order one.

I've not yet seen a unit that was advertised here arrive in 4 months
yet... Maybe they are catching up. I kinda like things remaining
behind a bit... Means that K3's are going out as quickly as possible
and is good news for Elecraft... So long as customers are willing to
wait for a K3 and I think people have spoken that they will.

This delivery time is -forward- looking, and is a direct calculation
based on current and projected production rates.

Looking backwards the time will always be longer as we have been
continually increasing production rates each month. We are now producing
at a rate ahead of current orders.

Very cool. Kinda upsetting that you're now going faster than orders but
it's also a plus. I was liking that units were being sold faster than they
could be made for a while but with the 7600 and what not coming out getting
to a point where one can just be ordered and shipped may not be that bad of
a thing. I can definitely see the wait being something that sways someone
away from the K3.

I must admit that mine was definitely worth the wait.

No reason to be upset :-) The order rate is still -very- good. We're
just doing even better in production.

We've planned on ramping up production to this point from the start and
to be honest, for ongoing business in this market long term, it is
important that we get the lead time down to a very short time.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - shipping size?

2008-07-22 Thread AD6XY

I am not sure I agree. If you leave it in the box as delivered then you can
just put it through like any other piece of baggage. Possibly even put it
inside another bag. It may be that you need to pay the extra $25 for an
extra bag but that will be cheaper than UPS. I doubt the UPS baggage
handlers are much gentler than the airline ones.

I don't have the measurements, but it's probably too big for hand luggage. I
guess it would take up best part of half of a decent sized suitcase.

It is very well packed, with polystyrene chips and bubble wrap. Bear in mind
there are bare PCBs in there that need to be well protected from the normal
rigors of shipping, never mind airport baggage handlers. There are also a
lot of different packages to get mislaid if you open the box and distribute
the bits about a suitcase.

I've heard of laptops and other valuables getting lost in checked baggage,
and the value of the K3 would probably not be compensated by your friend's
travel insurance. Personally, I think it'd be better to pay for shipping by
insured courier, the risk of loss or damage just isn't worth the saving.

I guess whoever coded the website didn't do it to take account of the value

the short answer to your question is probably yes.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Costs to Australia

2008-06-26 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Kevin,

The prices of ham gears in Hong Kong are far lower than that in VK. Therefore,
I often help Aussie hams in sourcing their gears from Hong Kong though I am not
a radio dealer.

To my knowledge, postal service is seldom challenged by VK customs. As long as
you declare the items as amateur radio kits and under A$1,000, you have no need
to pay any GST.

One more point - don't send two parcels together in one go. Otherwise, VK
customs will add up the total value of all the parcels and charge you GST

 Hi Shane and everyone,

This may not be much of a help, but I am an Aussie amateur
 who has
bought a K2 and KAT100, KPA100 and other accessories from
 Elecraft. I
have always specified USPS (the US Postal Service) and so
 far, have not
had a problem, except that in two small parcels a toroid
 has arrived
 broken. Elecraft replaced these promptly

The Australian Customs / Australian Post Office normally do
 not charge
the 10% GST unless the value of the parcel plus postage
 exceeds
AUD1000.00 I can not say for certain that this is their
 absolute policy
 - just my experience so far.

USPS air mail options normally get here within 10 business
 days. This
time includes freight from Aptos, all the security checks
 at this end
 and delivery to my door.

I do not think that the extra charged by the couriers for
 three day
 delivery is worth it.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Costs to Australia

2008-06-25 Thread Shane White

For all you guys in the US, I have listed below the alternative shipping
costs for my K3 order which I'll place soon. I live in South Australia.

US Postal Priority Mail International = $131
US Postal Priority Mail International = $164
UPS Worldwide Expedited = $372
UPS Worldwide Express = $410

How risky is it to use the US Postal service? I'm worried about the delivery
taking a month or two and the package arriving in more bits than when it was
sent.

Thanks,
Shane

I didn't get the option of using the postal service here to the UK because
the maximum insurance was not enough to cover the value of the shipment. I
assume that you just looked at the website, which doesn't understand this,

Correct: anti-clockwise as opposed to counter-clockwise. ;^)

Amazingly, I have yet to have USPS destroy anything I
used to bring a lot of stuff out this way. Can't say the same
about QSLs, though. ;^(

Ask for the manual to be left out (very heavy) if you really
do not trust USPS wish to insure for the full amount, have
something packed separately - such as the KPA.

That seems odd considering I had to enter my country and post code. Wouldn't

Today I got a letter from Parcel Farce demanding the ransom fee. This
includes a GBP 13.50 clearance fee - more than a quarter of the amount of
the VAT. I can pay it online, over the phone or through the post. I paid it
online, and have been given a delivery date of next Tuesday.

I could have gone to the depot to collect it, and had it today, but Parcel
Farce don't use the local Post Office, and the depot is nearly an hour's
drive away. With petrol at over GBP 5 a gallon now (that's 10 USD to the
rest of you) you think twice about getting the car out these days.

I can't remember how much UPS charged for taking the VAT when the K3 came,
but I'm sure it wasn't 13.50, and I was able to pay the driver as well so
delivery wasn't further delayed. I think UPS is probably the best option for
all but the smallest items.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping to UK

2008-05-16 Thread Stephen Prior
I'd be grateful for any feedback from UK amateurs as to their experiences
with the various shipping options.

When I last looked, UPS seems more expensive, but since USPS post goes
through Parcel Farce (intended 'typo'!) I would, in fact consider paying
more for UPS. Does UPS charge the same sort of handling fee that Parcel
Force does I wonder? I know UPS tracking is superb having used it before.

I'd be grateful for information before the imminent (ordered 24th December)
Katiegram!

I'd be grateful for information before the imminent (ordered 24th
 December)
 Katiegram!

If you are ordering a whole K3 then I don't think you have any option other
than UPS, because the maximum insurance available with USPS is not enough to
cover the value of the radio.

However, whatever you are ordering it is probably worth paying the extra for
UPS anyway unless you are willing to be very patient. My eagerly awaited KPA
was despatched from Aptos on 8th May and I am still waiting for it! It took
3 days to reach British customs, the bureaucrats took 4 days to decide how
much money I have to give our useless government to squander, so it left
customs yesterday evening. Now it all depends on whether Parcel Farce
manages to lose it or not.

Incidentally the KK7UQ IMD meter I ordered at the same time as the KPA was
shipped by US Interface in an official USPS cardboard mailer and took only 4
days to arrive. It was delivered by good old Royal Mail and must have
bypassed customs because there was no VAT to pay whatever. Let's hope they
don't read this reflector!

If you originally specified USPS, Katie will be recommending that you
upgrade to UPS, because the postal services don't offer sufficient
insurance cover.

The day after the package had left Aptos, UPS were calling from East
Midlands Airport with the ransom demand for VAT. That can be paid by
plastic over the phone.

Delivery was the following day, with nothing more to pay.

I gave my firm's address, so it came all the way by UPS and what's more they
didn't want the VAT in advance, it just went on the monthly VAT import bill
to my firm, so I got more time to pay and no delay. This is probably a tip

Between now and Friday, April 19th, we should be shipping K3 orders
received through Nov 14th.

Also of interest: We're still on track to ship the first group of
KRX3s on the 25th. We will pause for several weeks after that to make
sure there are no problems in the field with the first units and then
resume shipping in full volume. (We will be building KRX3s during this
period.)

Now I start to wonder if K3 #67 is low enough to be one of the
selected few or if the wait will continue and continue and continue
and continue... ;-)

Lots of good news this morning!

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Status

2008-02-09 Thread Dave Agsten

I'm wondering if anyone has heard of K3 shipping dates
for orders later than May 25th? I received an invoice
number/notice last Sunday but one item was missing
from it. I notified Lisa of the issue immediately and
was told I'd receive a corrected invoice. I've heard
nothing since. The original invoice said the radio
would ship in 5 to 7 daysfrom last Sunday. Even if
that's business days, I would think I should have
heard something by now. Tuesday, the 12th would be 7
business days.

Any updates from anyone?

2007-12-28 Thread AD6XY - Mike

Thanks for this update - I trust you had a merry Christmans and will have a
happy new year.

The thing of most interest to me is what is a realistic last order date for
K3 parts to be collected at Dayton (assuming you are going to Dayton). I am
thinking in particular here of items like the second receiver. Others of
course may be interested in a complete K3.

For non USA buyers, anything due after mid-late April might as well be
collected as posted. Avoiding the shipping is a good excuse to go to
Dayton.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Status Update

2007-12-27 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

We've just updated the K3 shipping Status Page.

Shipping for the weeks of Jan 2-4 and 7-11:

(Orders with deposits):
We have a short shipping week next week, due to the New Year's holiday
on 12/31-1/1, but we are still working over this next weekend (Dec
29-30) to get ahead. We're ramping up our ship rate and we will ship
the few remaining May 3rd orders, and the May 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9th
orders during this period.

We have also added staff (and overtime) in production and test and hope
to beat the above plan. (We're still adding more help over the next 2

[Elecraft] K3: shipping - to the point

2007-12-14 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Hi there K3 owners-in-waiting:

By this time, it must be crystal clear that the boyz in Aptos were
irrationally exuberant in their projections of how fast the K3 would
get out the door. It has recently been stated by the boyz that,
effectively, we don't know. That is the most honest statement and
one which I stated (and urged) here months ago.

But the key phrase above is CRYSTAL CLEAR...which refers to the buyers.

Every time I see a posting about a new shipping update I wince
before I click on the link. But for now, that is all I do. It is
what it is.

I bought (ordered) the K3 because of (a) incredible specs, (b) my own
experience with the K2, (c) personal excitement about getting a new
rig, (d) UNREAL low price for what I would get performance-wise, and
(e) disregard for my own well-established rules about buying a cat
in a bag.

Before I left for Dayton, I told my wife that I was going to buy the
K3 and she said, No you're not. I laughed and said, Why not? And
her reply was word-for-word exactly me. She said, 1. Nobody has one
yet. 2. It hasn't been out one year. 3. It has not been reviewed
by ARRL or RadCom. 4. You haven't played with one yet. 5. Fellow
contesters, based on first hand experience, have not commented on its
performance yet. Yup...I knowingly ignored over 40 years of
rule-building when it comes to buying a new contest radio. I was
psyched.

At this time, I have chosen to sit it out because, quite frankly,
there is nothing else out there that I would buy. It's a K3 or
nothing. AND...for me, contest season is over for 2007 (save the
Stew Perry Top Band) and I know that I won't my radio will not be here
by then either. So further angst is now completely fruitless. So is
getting pissed. I STILL WANT THE RADIO.

I am not suggesting that those who want to comment on delivery stop
doing so. I am suggesting a possible alternative perspective (way of
thinking) while we all squirm in anticipation of the Lisa
communication.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Status Update 11/26/07

2007-11-27 Thread Craig Rairdin
As far as shipping units that had no deposit/full payment
before those that had been partially/fully paidI think
if that has happened in the first batch, it's really shoddy
treatment for those who gave Elecraft financial aid with
 their deposits or prepayments.

Let's clarify what those of us who made a deposit were promised: We were
told if we made a deposit we would be assured of being in the FIRST 200
SERIAL NUMBERS (until those were sold, of course). If only 100 deposits were
made, then Elecraft could ship in order-date order and still be keeping its
promise. If 200 deposits were made and the production run was increased to
300, Elecraft could ship in order-date order but reserve serial numbers
below 220 for deposit-makers and still be keeping its promise.

If more deposits were made than there were units in the first production
run, and if serial numbers 220 are not being reserved for the first 200
deposit-makers, then Elecraft isn't keeping its promise to those who made
deposits.

Consider the possibility that there were 199 deposits made in the first 1000
orders, then the 200th deposit was made. If Elecraft sends serial number 220
to the 1001st customer, they would be fulfilling the promise to
deposit-makers even if the other 1000 radios get shipped first.

Since we don't know the number of deposits made or the size of the first (or
any) product run, we can't say for sure whether or not this promise is being
kept. We can only give them the benefit of the doubt. Note that if you order
today and make a deposit, there's no benefit other than the good feeling
that comes from helping Elecraft improve its cash flow during a time when
cash flow is dependant on shipping radios that are apparently hard to ship
in quantity.
