[Elecraft] K3: Update - Antenna not connecting on change to BC frequencies

2019-07-07 Thread Nigel ZL2DF
Initially posted 6/5/19, now solved. The problem was signal
intermittency with an installed KBPF3 when switch to frequencies below
1.700.

With patient help from Keith WE6R at Elecraft and suggestions from 5 other
list members I was able to confirm the problem was on the KBPF3 board.
Further tests to map the relay switching frequencies from 0.5 to 30Mhz
confirmed that while various relay switching were not consistent they were
all operating when energized. This then suggested faulty U1 and U2,
or corrupt control signals.Three TPIC6C595D from Elecraft were ordered.
These shift registers are daisy chained on their control line so I initially
changed out U1 (first experience at working with this sized IC).
Happily this solved the problem.Along the way I performed an EE INIT
on the radio and did a full calibration so now have a more detailed
understanding of the radio.

Warm thanks to Keith WE6R, Bill NR4C, Ben W4SC, Dave W9PA, Mark WB9CIF and
Mike VP8NO.

73, Nigel ZL2DF

Re: [Elecraft] K3 update?

2012-10-22 Thread Wayne Burdick
We're testing a field-test release of K3 firmware, 4.55. Release notes
below. However, we have a few more changes to make before going to beta.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 4.55 / DSP 2.79, 10-10-2012

* AM TRANSMIT CAN USE THE FM FILTER: The wide (FM) crystal filter can
now be assigned to AM transmit as well as FM. This can potentially
free up a crystal filter slot for customers who were using the 6-kHz
filter only for AM.

* K3EXREF USERS MUST NOW ENABLE THE MODULE IN THE MENU: To do this,
locate the CONFIG:REF CAL menu entry and tap 2 to change the setting;
flashes XREF IN or XREFOUT. If you DO NOT have a K3EXREF module
installed, use the XREFOUT setting (the default). If you use the XREF
IN setting without a K3EXREF module installed, you may hear digital
switching noise on the 6-meter band.

* REMOTE-RIG (K3/0) BUG FIX: The SUB RF GAIN control now works
correctly.

* XVTR BAND DISPLAY FIXED FOR MICROWAVE BAND DISPLAYS: Previously, a
band defined as 3400 MHz in CONFIG:XVn RF would not produce the
correct display when the VFO was tuned below 3400 MHz.

* PSK-D/FSK-D PROSIGN TRANSMIT FIXED: Was sending BB for BT, AA
for AR, etc., always duplicating the characters.

* VOX TRANSMIT TERMINATION VIA REMOTE CONTROL FIXED: The RX; remote
control command will now properly terminate transmit when VOX is in
use. Some customers who use VOX in audio data modes will find this
useful. Previously the K3 would sometimes not exit transmit, requiring
an additional RX; command.

* VFO A/B REV AND SWAP DE-GLITCHED: In rare cases, swapping VFOs would
generate a loud audio artifact.

Mike, this could be a bug. The program does assume that the
~/Elecraft/K3_Firmware directory structure does not exist the first time it is
run. I'll look into it and see if I can find any issues in the code when the
utility is run from ~/Elecraft. In the meantime, you should be good to go with
your current installation.

[Elecraft] K3 update issues on Linux

2009-04-30 Thread Mike Clarke
Hi,

I'm trying to update my K3 using the firmware utility on Linux (Debian Lenny.)

So far, I've

a) Downloaded the tarball
b) Created a directory for the tools:

$ cd ~ ; mkdir Elecraft

c) Unpacked the tarball:

$ tar -zxvf k3utility.tgz -C Elecraft

d) Run the application. It's talking to the rig fine, and detects the
current firmware version. However, when I try to download new
firmware, I get this:

00:12:15 K3 Utility for Linux Version 1.2.3.18
00:12:28 K3 is running MCU version 03.03. RS232 speed is 9600 bps.

a few seconds.

00:12:56 hfpf0100.hex
00:12:56 bash: line 0: cd: /home/clarkema/Elecraft/K3_Firmware: No
such file or directory

As a result, the downloaded files are saved in $HOME/Elecraft, rather
than $HOME/Elecraft/K3_Firmware, and it seems the firmware updater
doesn't detect them. I tried:

$ cd ~ ; rm -rf Elecraft ; mkdir Elecraft

and then tried the update again. This time, the files are downloaded
without complaint, and stored in $HOME/Elecraft/K3_Firmware.

However, when the download is complete, I get an error dialog: An
exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The
application must shut down.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Update utility failure--Help!!

2008-07-24 Thread Jim Wiley

John -

If you have not already done so, you might try getting a fresh
download. It is not unknown for there to be an otherwise undetected
hiccup (an error, to use a non-technical term) in the received file.
Sometimes trying again will fix this sort of thing. If it happens
repeatedly, then it is time to ask questions of the main man.

NASA refers to the highly technical term, hiccup, as an anomaly.
Anything can be an anomaly: Inadvertently having ANT2 selected on 30m
and wondering why the band is dead and the SWR is infinite would be an
anomaly in NASA-speak [fixed when Wayne called and said, Let's start
with the easy stuff ...]. Finding the rocket pointy-end down in the
desert outside Phoenix when it should have been headed for the moon
would also be an anomaly. It's just a matter of degree.

[Elecraft] K3 Update on Firmware

2008-06-27 Thread Gary Scott
About 3 weeks ago I posted a problem with my K3 failing during a firmware
update. I finally got around to finding the problem (yes I'm sloo) It
turned out to be a faulty USB to Serial Cable.Today I picked up a Radio
Shack 6 ft USB-A to Serial Cable (part number 26-949). This cable mates to
the K3 connector (It has the screws ,not nuts) as I was ask by Dick,K6KR to
watch for this. So now my K3 is working again!! I would like to think Dick
Dievendorff K6KR for his prompt help and the many many email he sent me to
find the problem. Now back to playing radio!!

RE: [Elecraft] K3 update problem

2008-01-23 Thread Brian

Hi, Stan!

You bet! I have a laptop with Vista Home Basic and the K3 Utility
program works great.

Remember, a key to the success of updating the K3 is how it is connected
to the computer. If you use an RS232 - USB adapter (ours or anyone
else's) always make sure they have the correct drivers (see the K3
Utility Help file for details).

Also, if you use a USB hub, it should be externally powered with a
wall wort. Hubs that use the host pc for power are usually
underpowered and can cause download failures.

Let us know how well the update process works for you!

[Elecraft] K3 update problem

2008-01-21 Thread Eric

Hi,

After having successfully completed several updates of the firmware
of my K3, it suddenly has stopped working,

my K3 is not responding.

After seeing this I upgraded the K3 update utility to the latest and

delivered USB-serial converter.

Forcing K3 into MCU upload mode doesn't work

Any ideas?

2008-01-21 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The K3 Utility (and the KUSB drivers) work on Windows Vista. I'm using a
Vista laptop as one of my two primary test machines. I use the Elecraft
KUSB and I got the Vista drivers from the Microsoft Update web site when I
first plugged the KUSB in, without using the driver diskette that came with
the KUSB. I just plugged the KUSB in and waited while Microsoft Update did
its work automatically.

The K3 Utility includes a Vista-aware exe manifest so that Vista is
informed directly that the K3 Utility requests no special privileges.

[Elecraft] K3 Update: It keeps getting better...

2007-07-19 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI

Folks keep asking me how the field test is going. I think it's going
very well. Almost all the changes Elecraft has published have been
software. The hardware I have seen is very stable. There were a few
missing pull-up resistors and a ground jumper which we added easily in
the field. The front panel labels are being revised. But the hardware
behind this software-defined radio is proving itself remarkably close
to final detail and quality. So I have been telling those who ask that
the K3 field test is really SMOP, what we call in the software
industry a simple matter of programming. That big job is proceeding
well, with new features, fixes and tuneups coming through every few
days. They are a snap to download and with each download the K3 keeps
getting better and better.

One of the more recent features added to the K3 software was VOX. It
was worth the wait! This is one of the smoothest I've used and the
anti-VOX is perfect. I've yet to have speaker audio trip it. It's easy
to adjust gain to match various microphones so that relaxed, quiet
speech triggers the VOX instantly but normal breathing and ambient
noise very rarely cause false triggers. Pickup is very fast - no need
to prefix a transmission with Uhh... to avoid losing a syllable.
There are no switching transients, either, so I can set the delay very
short. Superb!

[Elecraft] K3 Update: It keeps getting better...

2007-07-19 Thread Don Rasmussen
This is of great interest - thanks!

There are a couple of issues here.

First, if there are any hardware changes at all,
Elecraft either has to fix each one in the first
batch (of maybe 250?) or, accept the lead delay for
ordering a revised PCB group. This is probably my
preference, but I'm okay with it either way.

Also, if they have changed the front panel they may
need to reorder those for the first batch, or at some
expense, resend new panels later for the first group.

The documentation also needs to be changed for that.

I'm assuming that printed documentation comes with the
K3 like it did with the K2. Sure hope so, I REALLY
like the K2 document.

Finally, even with SMOP changes, I'd allow a week or
two from the end date of those changes before units
are being sent out.

This is all my guess work, it's probably more complex
than even this and (a little) more patience could
easily be required of us. I'm greatly encouraged by
Ricks comments.

It's very good for such a small speaker. You can easily discern those
OTA signals with good transmitted audio from those with poor audio.
The AF equalizer lets you adjust the tonal quality. The hiss level is
extremely low, much lower than my FT-1000MP.

and the line outputs?

I haven't used them much for listening. I did check one pair of
headphones and found the output level too low for that set. Line Out
isn't intended for unamplified listening but rather for stuff like
sound card input. For that, it works very well. It gives me audio
levels that make for very easy, clean copy of RTTY and PSK. That's the
purpose.

What kind of power output/duty cycle does the rig get.
(I thought someone reported 125 watts for hours with no problem!)

Dunno. I have only the QRP version so far. The 100W amp has two big
fans with temperature controlled cycling. They want the K3 to be the
best digital mode rig on the market, so RTTY with its continuous duty
cycle is a design point. It will be fun to see how warm it gets in
that application!

What filters do you have and how do they work, notice a big
difference between different filters?

I have the 400 Hz and 2.8 Hz 8-pole filters. They're the same
excellent filters we get from INRAD for after-market upgrade of other
radios. I like to listen to CW at 500-600 Hz. When I do that, the 2.8
KHz roofing filter cuts in (it has to) and I can hear more around my
freq. I have a 1.0 KHz roofer on order with the second receiver and it
may end up in the main receiver. My desire for optimal roofing filters
is for contesting in crowded neighborhoods. For general operating, the
wider filter and DSP are very adequate. This is subjective stuff -
YMMV.

How well does the sync AM detector work?

I don't think it's available to testers yet.

I operate 90% CW. The sidetone sounds great - like a pure sinusoid. So
does the QSK. It has some low level clicks but is very pleasant to
listen to. This is at 15W - I don't have the 100W amp yet. Wayne says
it may get better in the future when they have time to tune the
software a little more. I ran a QSK test with N6TV and he was able to
break a chain of dits at around 30 WPM with as little as one dit on
his end. This isn't easy since his dit would, on average, overlap one
of mine by 50%. A dah was easy to detect at 30+. Real sending should
be detectable at higher speeds than I usually operate (40+). This is
first-class QSK and you can turn it on and off with a button without
disturbing your favorite semi-breakin delay setting.
