Mike,

If the KDSP2 seems to be working properly, I must ask about the
possibility of the LED being reversed.

Shine a light on the top of the KDSP2 and look carefully at the LED - near
the base you will find some reflective metal through the colored lens -
there is a narrow wedge in that metal. If the wedge points toward the
connector, the LED is mounted correctly, but if it points toward the edge
of the board, it is mounted backwards.

[Elecraft] KDSP2 Problem resolved

2006-08-17 Thread Robert Johansen
Last night I looked over the malfunctioning DSPx board and I believe that
I found the problem causing the SSB low pass bandwidth problem that I had
noticed with the board.

There was a solder whisker causing a short between pins 77 (D17) and 78
(D18) I removed the solder using a pick and have tried the board and it
seems to be working ok so far.

Thanks to Don, Gary and Lyle for helpful suggestions

[Elecraft] Kdsp2 problem

2006-08-15 Thread Robert Johansen
Hi Don,

The problem that I am experiencing is that when I completed the DSP board
last night, I noticed that the default setting of the SSB DSP filter 1
(low pass filter) did not sound like its high frequency audio bandwidth
was wide enough. The filter setting 2 default setting of 2.5 KHz had a
higher frequency of noise content.

When I tried to change the upper cut off frequency following the
instuctions on page 26, I noticed that any setting greater than 2.5
through LPF resulted in a narrower noise bandwidth although the display
changes normally according to the instructions.

I have experimented with it further today and am experiencing the same
problem. Also I have noticed that when I advance the low pass filter
cutoff from display S1 00 2.5 to S1 .45 2.5 it sounds like I
have selected a CW filter from the change in the noise bandwidth. S1
.40 2.5 sounds like the correct bandwidth. It is strange that the low
frequency cutoff filter characteristics change very abruptly over 400
Hz.

PeteLooks like Easter weekend is pretty slow for getting help with
your problem. Guess the tekkies are out of pocket. Unfortunately, I have
not gone down the DSP road yet, so I'm not much help. In fact, I ordered
the DSP accessory & the A to B upgrade for my K2/100 (#1411) on Friday.

Looks like you've provided some good trouble-shooting information. The
wrong voltages on the U-1 must be indicating a problem somewhere.

I had a problem with one of my options & I contacted Elecraft Tech help &
they sent me a replacement IC since the problem sounded like a b/o IC.
Sure enough that was the problem.

Another way to ck for bad solder joints would be to use a digital camera &
shoot some shots that you could print out or just look at on computer
screen.

Good luck, I'll be watching to see what the problem is.

  PIN 5 = 5.02 V ( should be 0 )

  Pin 14 = 0 V ( should be 5.0 v )
  Pin 15 - 19 = 5.02 V ( should be 0 V )
  Pin 20 - 24 = OK Voltages
  Pin 25 = 0.2 - 0.4 V (should be 0 V )
  Pin 27 = 5.04 V( should be 0 V )
  Pins 26 + 28 = 0 V OK
K2 does have 2.04P and IOC 1.09 firmware upgrades. K2 was a version A (
pre-3000) and did A to B upgrade).
This could be a Lyle Johnson solution but I'll take suggestions from anyone
who has encountered a similar problem with their KDSP2.

Hello Tony!

I get the same message no matter whether in CW or SSB modes.

Then I suspect you have older DSP firmware. The current version, which
supports the front panel shortcuts, is "Ctl 3.10" Please see the KDSP2
errata sheet on the Elecraft website in the Manuals section.

If you are in CW mode, the notch will not work and you will get "not
inst". In RTTY mode, neither the notch nor the denoiser will work. In
USB or LSB mode, both shortcuts ought to work.

Keep in mind the front panel shortcut with the latest K2 firmware.
AFIL+REC will toggle the denoiser on and off without being in the DSP
menus, and AFIL+SPLIT will similarly toggle the automatic notch filter
on and off.

Enjoy the KDSP2!

If the DSP chip itself is having a problem, there would be no audio.

[Elecraft] KDSP2 problem

2005-06-09 Thread Steven Pituch

Hi all,

OK, I think I have all the upgrade modes working on my K2 #402. It was
a lot more work than I thought it would be; lots of changes. The CW
filters seem significantly better than before. And the SSB filter looks
quite flat.

However, I just installed the KDSP2, and based on the manual the auxbus
isn't communicating with the dsp unit. I seem to be able to use the
default filters, but when I hit "display" I still get the voltage and
current readout. Also I think I was supposed to get a clock setting
routine when I first powered up.

Everything seemed to go together OK, except the width of the socket for
the clock IC is significantly narrower than the IC pins. I had to
actually bend the pins inwards in order to get them into the socket.
That's the first time that has happened.

I am studying the schematic now. Any suggestions?

Also, what happens if I want to do a cal pll or something. Don't I need
the freq counter probe plugged in to do that? Would I need to remove
the DSP unit and then short out the connector where r18 and r19 are shown?

As good as the radio was before the mods, its gonna be a killer once I
get this dsp working. I'm impressed.

Thanks,
Steve, W2MY
