Jeff,

Pro Audio Engineering also has good stock of these cores and better
pricing than Mouser.

I bought the cores from Verical.com --

they had the best deal on them --

I did that for a folding solar panel I purchased that put out 18V. A couple
zeners dropped it to 15.3V. The panel doesn't have the juice for transmission,
but fine for receive (or charging the batteries).

There are other good solutions. Use the panels and charge controller to
charge an outboard battery. Now you DO have enough for TX.

Genasun is the best, no RF noise, very efficient. They make different
products that are designed for each type of battery chemistry, and for
different power ratings. I use the GV-10 in my station.

This SunForce is less efficient, no RF noise, but very inexpensive. $17
at amazon. Designed for lead-acid. I used this unit in my station until
I found the GV-10.

Hello Chip,

I did a lot of testing of KX3 power supplies, and the PAE is the quietest,
next to a linear power supply.

I had a fair amount of EMI problems, too, until I put a big ferrite bead
(Fair-Rite 0431176451) on the DC output wire. I wound 6 turns though the
core, right at the power plug that goes into the KX3. This brought the
noise down to barely audible, totally tolerable.

I bought the cores from Verical.com -- they had the best deal on them -- but
they appear to be out of stock. Mouser's got them for under $8. These are
the same cores that K9YC recommends in his "RF Interference to Audio
Systems" paper.

[Elecraft] KX3 Power Supply

2016-01-19 Thread Keith D Jones

I purchased 5V, 12V, & 15V versions of the Solas power supplies made in
Germany. The SCP30S15DN 15V @ 2A 2 A Amp 100-240V 0.75A are currently
selling on ebay for about $25. I have not done any extensive testing but
have not noticed any power irregularities or hash. They seem to be very
well made units made for an industrial setting.

I found my PAE-Kx33 also put out hash I could hear when operating near

the DC cable near the power supply. That knocked the hash down so it's

Don

Thanks for the reply. I have thought long about it, and decided I would rather
not risk damaging
my KX3 for the sake of a cheap PSU. I live too far away from the factory to
risk damaging
the KX3 - it cost me $ 450.00 just to ship my new KX3 to me in June.

I will leave the cheap eBay PSU for some other project, or the trash. I have
plenty of other
regulated, stable PSU’s that supply the correct voltage, so I will continue
using them.

I would never forgive myself if I damaged my KX3 by using a cheap eBay PSU.

Thanks for all the replies

bought one, this is the one

It terminates in the right plug for the KX3 and is rated at 15 volts at max 5
amps, and only sells for $ 7.79 including free shipping from Hong Kong.
Anyway, it is cheap as chips so I bought one, and it arrived today. I hooked up
to a volt meter and see it is 15.4 volts. I know it is better for TX IMD to
have higher voltage supplied to the
KX3 rather than a voltage too low, but I am concerned that 15.4 volts may be
too much for the KX3. I see in the KX3 manual specs, that recommended supply
voltage is 8 - 15 volts.
I would hate to hurt my KX3 with over voltage anyone know if there would be

2016-01-18 Thread John Kramer
Someone on this reflector suggested a power supply off eBay, that could be used
with the KX3 about 2 months ago. It is intended for Toshiba laptops. So I
bought one,
this is the one…

http://www.ebay.com/itm/15V-5A-AC-Adapter-Charger-Power-Supply-For-Toshiba-Tecra-A6-A7-A8-A9-A10-Laptop-/381356162365?hash=item58ca993d3d:g:Yk0AAOSwMmBVxX22

It terminates in the right plug for the KX3 and is rated at 15 volts at max 5
amps, and only sells
for $ 7.79 including free shipping from Hong Kong.
Anyway, it is cheap as chips so I bought one, and it arrived today. I hooked up
to a volt meter
and see it is 15.4 volts. I know it is better for TX IMD to have higher voltage
supplied to the
KX3 rather than a voltage too low, but I am concerned that 15.4 volts may be
too much
for the KX3. I see in the KX3 manual specs, that recommended supply voltage is
8 - 15 volts.
I would hate to hurt my KX3 with over voltage……anyone know if there would be
any short
or long term problems with running 15.4 volts to the KX3 ? It is just slightly
above the
maximum recommended supply voltage

[Elecraft] KX3 power supply

2016-01-18 Thread Howard Hoyt

John,

I do have a horse in this race (the Kx33), but I will tell you that in
testing many supplies I have seen that many of them have poor
regulation. Some show as much as 25% peak over-voltage which you would
need a scope to see when a load is removed, which is the situation when
the KX3 returns to receive after a full-power transmit cycle. Running
15.4V average could potentially mean 19.25V peak with such a supply.

This reason plus many others is why we designed the Kx33. We like our KX3s!

Cheers & 73,

Howie - WA4PSC

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 power supply

2016-01-18 Thread John Kramer
Thanks for the info Bob, and it’s reassuring to see that the KX3 has protection
for
over voltage.
One caveat with this PSU - I just tried to insert the DC plug from this PSU to
the KX3,
and I see it is too large for the KX3. Not a big deal, I will just cut it off
and fit the correct
size DC plug

And you could always put together a little inline circuit to drop the
voltage down to 13.8-14.1 or so...

I’m not an expert on this, but from what I’ve observed is that some of these DC

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 power supply brick

2015-02-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Lynn,

You really should use 13.8 volts or higher if you can. It will result
in a cleaner signal (lower IMD).
If you are using a supply with less than that voltage, it is wise to
back down on the power a bit.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 power supply brick

2015-02-10 Thread David Ahrendts
Lynn, I have used and was very happy with the PAE-Kx33
https://proaudioeng.com/products/pae-kx33-ac-power-supply/
https://proaudioeng.com/products/pae-kx33-ac-power-supply/
However, I acquired a few more Elecraft devices (PX3, KAT500, W2, and a relay
for a larger amp), so I consolidated all of the 12VDC devices using a Power
Werx 30 amp (more than enough) power supply
http://www.powerwerx.com/power-supplies/
http://www.powerwerx.com/power-supplies/
with Anderson Power Poles and the red/black zip line. Very neat. It was
Elecraft’s recommendation to use a single amp rather than several smaller
bricks. They use Power Werx in the field. Appears the single DC amp is the
quietest and cleanest.

I used 11 5000 mah NIMH's, 13.2v. Then used a Pepsi plastic bottle for a
shrink wrap. But then I had a charger capable of charging the NIMH's.
Make sure the laptop bat is 12v and not something bigger with a regulator
inside the LT. Usually the charging is done by the LT I believe. If it is a
lithium battery you will need a special charger capable of lithium's.

n,

I have a Gamma Research supply, rated 5 amps continuous and 20 amps
intermittent - adequate for a K3 at 100 watts SSB or CW. I had a place for
it in my KX3 travel case; it is quite small and light. It is expensive. I
have no connection to Gamma Reserch.

Monty K2DLJ

Hi,
I am looking for a small/light weight 12v (110/220v) switching power supply
for my KX3, rated for 3amps or more to take with me on the road.

Any recommendations? More concerned with reliability and that it's quiet
than I am cost.

2014-03-03 Thread Ron Bell
Hi,
I am looking for a small/light weight 12v (110/220v) switching power supply
for my KX3, rated for 3amps or more to take with me on the road.

Any recommendations? More concerned with reliability and that it's quiet
than I am cost.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Power Supply Recommendations

2014-03-03 Thread David G4DMP
Ron - If something similar to this is available in the USA, I would
recommend this...

http://www.rapidonline.com/Electrical-Power/36W-Volt-Adjustable-Multi-Output-PSU-85-2908

I used one of these with my KX3 during a recent visit to Florida. It
operates from 100 to 240V input and is supplied with a range of output
connectors. By the use of fixed resistors plugged into its side, output
voltages from 5 to 24V can be obtained. I used it with the 14V resistor
and this provided adequate current to drive the KX3 to full power.
Spurious radiation from the PSU was found to be minimal.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 power supply

2013-01-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bruce,

Be cautious with wall wart supplies with the KX3. Many are not
regulated and also throw out spurious responses that may not bother some
other receivers, but the KX3 with its 'direct to baseband' architecture
is quite susceptible to that kind of power supply interference. You
will be more certain of success using a small (or large) linear supply
rated at 13.8 to 15 volts at 3 amps or greater. My KX3 is connected to
a 35 amp Astron (with a suitable fuse - 5 amps). That supply also
powers the K3 and a number of shack accessories.

Another suggestion is the Gamma Research HPS-1a, which has a very small
footprint and will power a 100 watt radio. So if you get an amp you will be
covered. I have the HPS-1a and it powers my K3 just fine and is easy to
transport for portable operation.

I got a lucky find: searched some old laptop computer power supplies in the
bins at Halted Electronics, a surplus store, and found a 15V power supply that
was a good match. Anything from 12V to 15V should work. It is very small and
fits in well with the KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Power Supply

2012-09-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
Why not use the power supp;y that powers the rest of the shack
equipment Nrmally in the hamshack environment the footprint is not
important - put the power supply under the desk and it does not take up
extra desk space.

Most of the battery/power supply discussions here has been about
portable operation. For Fixed operation, many more possibilities arise
such as the Astron linear supplies. I use a 35 amp to power everything
in the shack, but you might get away with a 20 or 25 amp supply for a
100 watt station. If you are dedicated QRP, then a 6 amp power supply
will be adequate.

[Elecraft] KX3 Power Supply

2012-04-14 Thread Dyarnes
Several posts were recently made regarding the small Radio Shack switcher
power supply (RS 22-507). Most comments seemed pretty favorable about it.
Anyway, one of those came available in a local estate sale for one of my ham
friends who recently passed away. I decided to give it a try, and it does
seem to work well. I scanned all my commonly used ham bands for noise and
found none. It seems to be pretty clean to me. I also hooked up my K1 to
it, and it ran that rig just fine. Next I'll have to try the K2, but I
suspect it will work fine with that rig also.

I don't much care for the list price Radio Shack is asking, but if you find
one of these at a decent discount I think it's a good buy. I have another
similar supply, a Jetstream, but it's a tad bit bigger. This RS model will
be somewhat handier to tote around. It's really quite small. The Jetstream
does work equally well, though, and has voltage and current metering. I
can't remember exactly, but that one is rated quite a bit higher as to
current draw--maybe even 8 or 10 amps or a bit more. Still, it's just
enough bigger to make the RS model seem more convenient for specific use
with the KX3. By the way, no detectable noise on the Jetstream either. I
think several of their models have been given favorable reviews.

[Elecraft] KX3 power supply question

2011-12-29 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ
Does anyone know if the KX3 can be used with an external 12-14 VDC power supply
WITHOUT any batteries installed? I know some devices such as computers require
the
batteries to be inserted even if they are not any good, to complete the circuit.

Leaving the batteries at home when traveling would help keep the weight down...

Yes. And if you have both, whichever has the higher voltage (external
