Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue, USB-Serial, & Serial CW Keying

2006-10-30 Thread Jack Brindle
I think there is another way to look at this. N1MM Logger is the
center point of what you do in the contest. You should make changes
in N1MM Logger, and have it change the radio instead of doing the
same thing on the radio. That way Logger is always under control. The
exception to this is changing frequency within a band, where Logger
simply cannot do the QSY fast enough (for my taste). N1MM _can_ do
the QSY properly, but I find it to be a bit slow.

I don't remember if just clicking in the VFO B window will cause the
radio to select the B VFO, but there is a command to do so which also
changes focus to that window and changes the VFO selection
simultaneously.

More and more, the computer is where the contest is, not the radio!

the K2.

That activated the VFO B bandmap, and I concluded that VFO B was the

playing with the Logger some more, I realize that even though the
VFO B
bandmap is activated by switching to that VFO on the K2, the VFO A
data
entry window still has the focus and consequently the log entry
reflects VFO
A. Apparently one must click on the VFO B data entry window to
make VFO B

"active", no matter which VFO is selected on the K2. This is a little
confusing because the K2 will be transmitting on whatever VFO it
has active,
but maybe this is the desired behaviour for some reason??? My

Hi Mark:

I'm no expert on N1MM logger but I have used it with the K2.
I just tried it using v6.10.10, but I know this has worked
before with earlier versions. When you use both VFO A and VFO
B, you need to have 2 data entry windows open, one for A and
one for B. There are key shortcuts to switch back and forth
between A and B but if you simply click in the bandmap for
VFO B, the focus for everything switches to the VFO B entry
window and anything entered there will be entered correctly
into the log. If you then click on the bandmap for VFO A,
everything shifts back to the entry window for VFO A and the
data will be logged correctly with VFO A data. If you have
ONLY the entry window for VFO A open and use that for data
entry while using VFO B, then only VFO A data will be entered
into the log. This has worked for me using both "real" serial
ports as well as the "USB-to-serial" connections.

I haven't read the help manual/file lately (I must before
next weekend), but it used to be explained fairly well in there.

The only problem I have had with N1MM and using both VFOs is
with operating split and getting the software to send on A
while listening on B and vice versa.

Good luck!

Serial CW Keying

I started this thread with the original question. I specifically
wondered about folks using serial port for communications for band/mode
info with N1MM logging program. I'm using v6.9.6. As long as I use VFO
A only things are okay. If I switch to VFO B I don't see it displayed
on the program window and it doesn't log info from VFO B but continues
to log the info from VFO A, which is the wrong VFO at that point. I
think some of the responses have indicated that this specific problem
has been seen, with multiple versions of software from N1MM. Thanks
everyone for that input and I believe they will be looking into this
problem now as I'm not the only one with that problem.

I also tried EQF logging program and it displays both VFO frequencies
and correctly indicates which VFO is the active one, and I believe it
logs the info correctly as well if it displays it correctly. I really
like the N1MM program, though, so I'm going to stick with that and know
that it has that shortcoming, and hope it gets resolved by the N1MM
programmers soon. I appreciate everyone's comments on this and I hope
I've helped others be alerted of this potential bug so that you don't
have too much to edit in a log when you realize things don't look quite
right.

WRT the USB-Serial converter, I was only using that for the CW Keying
and I had tried radio communications with that as well but it didn't
seem to work at all so I didn't pursue it any further, yet. Could just
be the Belkin model I have or maybe some other setup issue, though. CW
Keying with either the normal serial port or the USB-Serial adapter
didn't seem quite smooth enough and the timing was off a bit. I just
built the parallel port interface using a single 2N and a 1-kohm
resistor and it seems quite a bit smoother. I'm not sure if this is
just wishful thinking or if it really is better, but I guess I'll find
out the next time I run a more serious effort on a CW contest to try it
out. My quick test made me think it was better though. Any experience
or comments from others on the parallel versus serial port CW keying, or
for that matter, how about USB port via some other interface? I think
this will get me by until I figure out which K1EL Keyer to get, probably
the USB version. BTW, the response from the S/W folk at N1MM Log is
that they will not be supporting the "KY" protocol. Just curious if
others who are reading this thread have used another logging program
that supports the "KY" protocol and how they like it? Maybe that should
be a topic for another thread, though.

Some issues with the USB/serial adapter. It may not be stable, or is
dropping
Data. The data rate on the K2 is fairly slow.

I agree - looks like the USB <=> COM port converter does either not receive
enough power from the PC and/or you need a newer driver. This is a common
problem.

I assume the serial cable is OK and conforms to the special Elecraft
specification.

Hi Don, and all other responders,

I guess I'll have to shop around for a better USB to
serial adapter. My desktop computer is far too noisy
to use with any HF equipment running. I was thinking
about replacing it with a Mac but I don't think Mac
desktops have serial ports either.

I remember there was some discussion several months
ago about why Elecraft didn't use USB for their
computer control interface. However, considering how
scarce serial ports are becoming on new computers and
the fact that many ham radio aftermarket manufacturers
are successfully using USB in their products I wonder
how long the argument can hold up (although I'll also
admit I don't know of any transceiver manufacturers
who market transceivers with USB control interfaces).

Some issues with the USB/serial adapter. It may not be stable, or is
dropping
Data. The data rate on the K2 is fairly slow.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue

I updated my copy of N1MM Logger (v6.10.10)in the hope
that I would be able to get into the CQWW this weekend
and noticed that it didn't recognize VFO B either.

On a related note, I downloaded, installed and
configured Ham Radio Deluxe a few evenings ago and
found that it's ability to display the K2's frequency
was very shaky. If the K2 was tuned to 7015.45 kHz
then HRD would display the correct freq for a few
seconds, then it might display something like 701 for
a few seconds, then 545 for a few more secs, then some
other combination of digits from the freq
next...changing every 10 or 15 seconds.

The K2 is connected to my notebook via the cable
provided with the KIO2 and through a serial-to-USB
converter.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Yes, I noticed the same problem (and more) last summer with VFO B. Maybe it
is fixed in a newer edition, dunno.

RE: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue

2006-10-27 Thread Randy Moore
Mark,

I'm new with N1MM, but a quick check just now with my K2 (#337 with most
applicable updates) shows that the N1MM Logger correctly tracks which VFO is
active and with the correct frequencies. By that I mean that the VFO A
display is active when VFO A is selected on the K2, and the VFO B display is
active (has the focus) when VFO B is selected on the K2, and both show the
correct frequency for the respective VFO. However, making a couple of dummy
entries in the log, starting with VFO A then going to VFO B, the VFO A
frequency was incorrectly entered for both. Looks like a problem to me too!

[Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue

2006-10-26 Thread Mark Schreiner
I was wondering if anyone else out there is using their K2 with a
pseudo-serial cable to their compuker to get band/mode info for contest
logging using N1MM logger. I've noticed that it records VFO A info okay
but if I switch to VFO B it continues to record VFO A info into the log
and not display VFO B info. So, when contesting, I make sure to start
each band on VFO A and make an effort to not switch to VFO B while using
N1MM logging software. In the past I didn't do this, the log continued
to record frequency & mode info from VFO A, and it screwed up the log.
It wasn't very easy to go in and edit the log with frequencies and mode
info, if I could figure out which lines needed updating, and then it
still didn't pick up the new multipliers correctly, which was another
exercise to get correct.

As a sanity check I just checked the WIN-EQF program and it seems to
display both VFO frequencies simultaneously and indicated the active
VFO, as well as correctly showing info when I switch to VFO B. So, I
think the rig & serial comm is okay otherwise.

I've filed a bug report with N1MM Contest Logger on this issue as well
as the previous post I just did on the serial port pulsing noise on
40m. I've gotten emails back from Pete, N4ZR, who is providing
technical assistance on the N1MM program bug reports. He's suggested
that I post here to see if anyone else has experienced this as well or
if it functions okay on your situations.
