[Elecraft] New to the list
I had sent this replay yesterday but just realized it only went to K4TO and not back to the list. Thanks to all who responded with your kind welcome messages. Like Kevin I have been inactive for decades but recently decided to jump back in. I am rather limited antenna wise at home but I did construct a well made 6 ft dia copper pipe magloop with vacuum variable over the summer which should be reasonably efficient on 30 and 40m although it will tune down as low as 80m but efficiency will be poor and the Q is about 1450 so it's very narrow down that end. The home QTH is horrible with electrical noise I've discovered after installing a KiwiSDR but using a loop on ground seems to make a huge S/N improvement with the broad band RX situation. The good news is all the Elecraft stuff was nicely packaged into a gator case so I can easily take it out where I can put up a better antenna in the field. I have a couple of 31 ft poles and have constructed a 20m half square which should be a good performer especially as cycle 25 picks up over the next few years. A bunch of extras came along with the gear from W6QR including a nifty book but I 've already started diving into the manuals. I got a helluva good deal on this stuff. Pretty exciting times! Re: [Elecraft] New to the List
Joe, Your best learning tool will be the KX-Line book by Fred Cady. You can order it from Elecraft - look under PRODUCTS -- BOOKS. If you go through all the instructions and exercises in that book, you can be answering questions instead of asking them. The Firmware and Utilities to download the firmware and do other useful things are no cost downloads from the Elecraft website. You will need the KXUSB USB to serial adapter to connect to a computer USB port. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/27/2019 12:01 PM, Joseph Street wrote: I wanted to say hello to the list membership and introduce myself. Hi Joe: Welcome from a fellow Canadian. I’m VE7ZD. You’ll find excellent support and a helpful community on this mailing list. I too have a KX3/PX3 and KXPA100 so I’m working on a similar platform. I was inactive for almost 20 years but became active again just a year ago. What are you using for an antenna? You can make great contacts with a simply antenna like a dipole. All my HF work is dipole-based and I find the antenna successful for making the QSO a high percentage of the time. 73 and welcome to the list, Kevin > On Nov 27, 2019, at 9:01 AM, Joseph Street wrote: > > I wanted to say hello to the list membership and introduce myself. > > > I just purchased a used package of KX3/PX3 and KXPAT100 which I am quite > pleased to get my hands on. > > Now I begin the journey of learning the user interface and getting up to > speed with using the rig for CW which is my main mode of interest. > > > No doubt I will have a few periodic questions as I dive through the many > publications by Elecraft about alerts, enhancements and firmware revisions > and try to determine the history of this gear, what has been done and what I > may need to do. > > > Best regards all > > > Joe ve3vxo > > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to mcqui...@sfu.ca __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] New K4 wish list
I have just a few criteria, and I’m at the age that it isn’t terribly likely I’d replace my K3 (or K3S) anyway unless the “new” thing were absolutely positively spectacular. Whatever the K4 is, as prime criteria, I don’t want to have to depend on someone else's OS, someone else’s glitchy application software, someone else’s general purpose computer hardware, or someone else’s idea of what a computer interface should look like. This is one place where glitzy tech for the sake of glitzy tech and a fancy display isn’t worth the price of admission. I don’t care about touch screens. I couldn’t keep track of 16 receive slices. And I want a knob not a mouse. It’s about the RADIO. The radio would have to be so good in an actual PRACTICAL(!) way that I couldn’t resist. There’s nothing on the market now that meets the criteria … period. That said, I fully expect there to be some kind of follow on radio. Coming from Elecraft, I would expect it to be a great radio that is a significant step up. Otherwise, why bother? > > */My wish is a removable front face like the Kenwood tx2000b > Or a remote face like the Flex Maestro with Blue Tooth and WIFI for remote > operation to the shack K4. > Grant NQ5T K3 #2091, KX3 #8342 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

It may be best to stick with the winner and continue to improve. If a newer K4 is eventually called for may it be small and light retaining as many K3 features as possible. I liked it, the software associated with LP-Pan burns a lot of computer resources, and so does my contest logging software. With both running, there's not much left for the computer to send voice messages, etc. And, I had to reorganize my operating desk to find room for a computer monitor for the display. The existing computer screen (a laptop) was already full to overflowing with my contest logging software. When the P3 was introduced, I immediately ordered two, one for each of my K3s that work in an SO2R (single-operator-two-radio) contesting setup. Why did I do that? For the reasons noted above, and because the combined cost of a computer, LP-Pan, and high quality, broadband audio sound card comes pretty close to the cost of a P3 (in kit form). And I would have two extra computer monitors to find room for on my operating desk, which is already full to overflowing. I received the P3s a week or so ago, and am pleased. Took less than an hour to build each of them. Its also important to note that the P3 explicitly provides an IF output to down-converter boxes like LP-PAN and the softrock board. Re: [Elecraft] NEW TO THE LIST
P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses. You'll need to do some research to see which suits your situation better. I will just briefly mention three clear differences... The most obvious difference is that P3 doesn't require a PC, and is basically plug-and-play. LP-PAN requires knowledge of PCs and sound cards. Some people find it trivial to set up, but some have difficulty. How your PC is configured plays into this. Another obvious difference is the screen size and resolution. I run mine at 1680x1050 (vs. 480x272 for P3), and can fill the display with the pan and/or waterfall if I want. This provides much better resolution for wide spans. To be fair, P3 provides better resolution at narrow spans, but I suspect you would use wider spans most often. Not so obvious is that PowerSDR-IF is not just a display, but a full receiver with all the DSP bells and whistles and very high quality sound through the sound card outputs. It actually provides two receivers, tied to both VFO A and VFO B, so that you can see and listen to both sides of a split QSO simultaneously without the need for a KRX3 as long as the two signals are within the 192kHz maximum display width. It does not provide diversity reception, or QSK capability. For more specifics, feel free to email or call me directly. Larry N8LP Bob Peters wrote: Hi All.. I am considering the purchase of a K3. Another significant difference is that LP-PAN can be used with other third party software like CW Skimmer, or any future application (band activity analysis, propagation studies, etc) that may require an SDR-type front end. There currently is no such capability with the P3, and none has been discussed for the future. 73, Dave AB7E On 8/22/2010 3:53 PM, N8LP wrote: P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses. For completeness' sake, I should mention that there are significant planned hardware and firmware extensions to the P3. I can't go into the details right now, but suffice to say that it will continue to evolve. The P3 can be considered part of the K3 system -- no computer required. 73, Wayne P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] NEW TO THE LIST [P3 vs. LP-Pan]
Hi Bob, The LP-Pan uses a PC for its display. Many operators prefer a stand- alone Panadapter like our new P3, which sits beside the K3 and doesn't require a PC for operation. The P3 is very tightly integrated with the K3 -- basically plug-and- play. It displays the K3's VFO A and B frequencies, VFO bandwidths, and QSY markers so you can jump to a desired signal easily. The P3's firmware is continuing to evolve, and in the future it will provide additional features. There's a daisy-chain IF OUT output so you could connect an LP-Pan in addition to the P3, if you'd like. The kit version of the P3 is very easy to build. No soldering required. Building it yourself will save you $50. I'm probably biased :) You can find customer reviews of the P3 at: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9146 73, Wayne N6KR Bob Peters wrote: I am considering the purchase of a K3. RE: [Elecraft] new to the List
Welcome to the list. What sort of operating are you going to do with the radio? I am surely no expert, but I have a K2, a K3 on order, had an icom 756 pro, and other rigs. The K2 is a kit, is small, and lacks some features the top end rigs have, but its very inexpensive, very portable, very low power drain, and on CW at least, works much better then the other radios on your list. The K3 will be less portable than the k2, but not much less. Its an all mode all band (to 6 meters) rig with lots of features and likely the best performing radio you can buy anywhere. If you operate CW mostly, from a small shack, RV, car, backpack, like operating field day, or on solar power, on a budget, the K2/K2-100 would be the one. (the 15 watt K2 with the built in antenna tuner is one slick package) If you want to do it all, (contest, chase DX, operate on 6 meters, do the digital modes, operate AM, FM, SSB, CW, etc) the K3 is for you. For the price of many other radios, you could get a K3 and a K2! Building the K2 as a kit is very fun, easy, and rewarding. There is nothing like using a radio you built! All the Elecraft rigs allow you to add only what you want, whenever you want it. Many people add features as they want them or get the money.
