Good for you George. I just got my Begali Signature paddles last
week. They are very nice but they are not carved out of a solid
block of stainless steel like your Sculpture paddles. And they weigh
about as much as a 5 ah gel cel battery. So they do not go traveling
with me. But I like the way you think.

[Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

2008-04-28 Thread Phil Debbie Salas
I've had a Palm Paddle for several years. It is part of my portable set-up,
and it is a great key. I bought mine with the magnetic base, and stick it
to a steel conduit cover which is painted black and has that rubbery
non-slip rubber glued to the bottom. I have a short article with photos in
the Articles section of my website at www.ad5x.com.

[Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

2008-04-27 Thread Mike Geddes
Looking for some portable paddles to use with my K2. Do any of you use
the Palm Mini-Paddles? Are they really worth $95, their current selling
price? Also, I wonder how they compare with the Paddlettes at $70
shipped? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Re: [Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

2008-04-27 Thread David A. Belsley

Mike:
I think these paddles are great. But . . .

a. you have to make a good base for them, and
b. you have to look closely to figure out just how they works to get
them adjusted correctly

I affixed them to one end of a piece of plexiglass about 2.5 x
8 (don't know the exact measurements off hand), made big enough to
support one's hand while operating, and with 6 small feet placed to
prevent any flexing. The weight of the resting hand holds things
firmly in place and gives a very secure operation.

As to adjustment, it's a bit of a pain to set them up at first, but
once set these are fantastic paddles. They are much more fun and
sure to use than, say, the standard Bencher, which is a problematic
set of paddles to be sure. The Palm paddles have an early contact
facility that allows the electrical contact to be made before the
paddles reach their physical stop. I personally find this very
disconcerting and so have mine adjusted so the electrical contact is
made at the physical stop. This took a bit of adjusting to achieve,
but it is quite possible.

best wishes,

2008-04-27 Thread Ron Foster
Mike,

I have a set of them for my K2. They are very well made and I like them a
lot. The packaging is excellent for protecting them in transit. The
detachable cord is also very convenient. The feel is a little soft (as
noted by a previous post) because the paddles flex a bit but in my opinion
that's a nit. My CW is neither better nor worse than on my Bencher and I
haven't noticed any fatigue on long runs. I would not hesitate to buy
another set even though they are a bit pricey. For what it's worth

I have a Palm mini paddle and it woprks great and has held up well. Mine
was a lot cheaper than $95! Guess I got it when the Euro hadn't gone up and
the Dollar hadn't plummetted! Seems like it was $65. Use it with the K1
and best tiny key I've used so far.

I forgot to mention. I stick mine down in place with the yellow or
blue sticky clay you get at office supply places. Works great and doesn't
damage the housing of the key. I didn't opt for the magnetic inserts as the
K1 doesn't have anything they will stick to! Didn't want to drill the side
of the K1 to mount the base either.

Re: [Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

2008-04-27 Thread Rick Dettinger
I screwed mine to an aluminum bar with a rubber foot on the front.
The rear of the bar had a hole that mated up with a hole in the K1
mounting bracket. I used the Elecraft supplied thumb screw to attach
the bar to the bracket. It worked well, unless I wanted to carry the
K1 without the bracket. I now use a GHD travel paddle attached to an
aluminum plate. It is not as compact but I can use it with other
radios or without the bracket I just hold the plate in my left
palm. This can be done with other paddles and I find that it works
well for me. An advantage of the Palm Mini paddles is that you can
buy extra snap in mounting bases and attach then to different gear.
Some have even attached them to tiles to use in the shack. The
paddles simply snap into the bases and are ready for use. My only
complaint with the Palm paddles is the slightly soft contacts. Not a
big one for portable use.
