Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-03 Thread
My Yamaha CM500 fell off the desk & broke. I just purchased a pair of
Logitech G335 headphones/mic ($40) to replace the Yamahas. The Logitech
plugged right in to the K3s & seems to be working fine. I have done one
over the air test with a friend & he thought I sounded good. I plan on
using them during sweepstakes, perhaps I will have more to say after that.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-03 Thread Ed Cole

I also bought the Antlion Modmic. Previously, tried the CM500 and they
caused my hearing aids to "howl" in feedback (not even connected to a
radio).

The Modmic uses a tiny earth magnet that attaches to my revered old Sony
stereo headset. The mic boom clicks to the magnet securely. I tested
both normal and cardiod pattern settings with good reports with my K3.

Comes with two lengths extension wires, PTT module, and 1/4 to 3.5mm
stereo adapter, all in a neat zipped carrying case (for when do not want
a boom mic). Mic has wind-blast foam cover for operating outdoors.

I mainly bought it for using with my KX3 operating portable mw shots
with small tripod-mounted dish on SSB. Also, good for SSB Contesting or
running a net when you want hands free for logging.

If I is was not clear - that i the beauty of the ModMic you can add it
to any headphones. And it does not damage the headphones and when you
remove the mic the attachment point is small and does not affect
the headphones in anyway. So I can use my Bose on the airplanes and
then pop the mic on them when I get to the ham staiton. And it easy
to take off when I am not on voice modes.

Yes, but -- they are overkill for use in a ham station, mics are likely

I would never recommend the CM500 for music. I tried that after my Grado
headphones died and quickly switched to Apple earbuds. Then I ordered new,
upgraded Grado headphones.

I’m always surprised at all the ham-specific headsets when there are actual

I got a few direct emails saying the same thing. I know that you can still
purchase the CM500, it just seems to be a lot rarer than it once was. A lot
of places like B&H show the Yamaha CM500 out of stock or no longer
available. Even Yamaha USA shows the item out of stock. One Amazon seller
lists it for $109.95 + $19.95 shipping and they have a poor delivery rating.
Another Amazon seller has only 1 product review and it is not available with
Prime.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread Jim Brown
A well-meaning member of our contest club arranged for the salesman for
Radiosport to speak to a meeting. I tried on a set, and found it to be
an instrument of torture. Several years later, after seeing guys raving
about its comfort and figuring they must have changed something, I again
tried a set at a hamfest. Nothing had changed, it was still an
instrument of torture. BTW -- they're also crazy expensive.

Because everyone's head and ears are different, headsets are a very
personal thing -- what fits someone else may not fit you. I find CM500s
and Sony MDR7506s very comfortable. For years, I wore a Sony set while I
slept, listening to jazz overnight. I've since graduated to top line
Beyer DT880 Pro, even more comfy and sounds better on music, but a LOT
more expensive. Wouldn't think of recommending to hams.

I would recommend this, headset wise.
http://www.vibroplex.com/contents/en-us/d9181.html

Much better construction than the CM-500 and the Heil Pro Set in my
opinion. It does not clamp your head like a RadioSport.

I've tried them all and the W1 is my recommendation.

I'm afraid they are simply too expensive, even if someone else is
paying.  Over 100 bucks for a cable... I don't think so.  I'll adapt the
CM500.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread Fred Jensen
Practically any electret mic element today is going to be good or even
great.  Having come from the era of "cans", with the wire headband,
cloth covered cord, and thin metal diaphram, that you wore forward of
your ears to prevent hearing damage, I've come to the conclusion that
the only headphone thing that really matters today is comfort in long
sessions.  My Yamaha CM-500 pretty much fits that requirement.  Fully
over my ears and very effective at blocking external noises.  It would
be perfect if I didn't have to wear glasses to see the radio and
computer screen.

During the WW SSB, casual monitoring with my K3/P3 showed many [actually
most] of the signals with most of the energy right up next to the
suppressed carrier [low audio freqs] where it contributes almost nothing
to communications clarity, but does contain most of the power.  The
energy falls off rapidly higher in the audio spectrum.

Jim, K9YC, has published an article in the NCJ which you can also find
at http://k9yc.com/ContestAudio.pdf   I don't operate phone very much,
but following his TXEQ recommendations, my TX spectrum is full in the
screen shots others have sent me and I get unsolicited "great audio"
comments on SSB.  The TXEQ profile has a much larger effect on transmit
audio quality than the microphone choice.  Those signals in the contest
that had a full energy spectrum were a LOT easier to understand.

Another K9YC tip for those of us who remember "peak the grid, dip the
plate" and are therefore becoming somewhat long in the tooth -- The
Elecraft RXEQ has a range of +/-16 dB in each of the segments.  16 dB of
high frequency boost is not really enough for me.  But, if I think of
the range as 0-32 dB, I get enough high boost to make SSB
understandable.  I have to run the AF Gain higher, but it has plenty of
range.

That is odd, because the Koss SB40 appears to be a Yamaha CM500 with a dynamic
mic. My first CM500 even said “KOSS” on the microphone connector. They should

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread Lou Laderman via Elecraft
I’ve read a lot of comments about Heil and the Yamaha boomset. Nobody has yet
suggested RadioSport boomsets (Arlan Communications,
http://www.arlancommunications.com/products/amateurradio/radiosport/rs60cf.asp).
I have several pairs. Although definitely on the high end of the market, they
are superbly built and extremely comfortable, with both dynamic and electret
condenser mic options. Some complain they’re too heavy, but I find them to be
great for me.

[Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread Bob McGraw
Likewise, I'm a retired pro audio engineer, studio and live music.  The
CM500 is a very good headset and plugs directly into the rear of the
K3S.  Turn on the bias.   They are available from Sweetwater Sound (no
connection to me) for about $60.  I also use the Koss SB40 ($29 on
Amazon) which has a dynamic mike.  One has to be careful with the
mike-to-mouth placement as it is a dynamic mike (no bias required) and
thus is prone to proximity effects or boosted low end.  Taking a
different approach I use a Shure SM-58 ($100) on a boom.  I did make my
own XLR-3 to Foster 8 pin cable. Very easy to do and connects to the
front panel MIC connector.  No bias required.  I also have used a
Behringer XM8500 ($29) with very similar results as the SM-58.  The
SM-58, or its like in wireless form,  is a very popular stage vocal mike.

One factor I've observed and stressed is "proper microphone technique".
That is proper placement of the microphone with regard to the mouth.  I
find many hams have been taught incorrectly in this regard or perhaps do
not understand the relationship that exists.  One needs to experiment
with a specific mike and their voice in order to attain desired
results.   Many dynamic microphones will have proximity effect which
will make them bottom heavy or bassy.  Simply back the mike away from
the mouth to correct the concern.  Many microphones have extended high
end response.  This produces lots of lip and mouth and breath/nasal
sounds.  Again, correct placement above the mouth, or to the side or
below the mouth usually corrects the concern. And of course, proper
adjustment of microphone gain and any compression is mandatory with each
mike.

Jim, K9YC recommendations for TX EQ is an excellent starting point.  In
my case, I've tweaked the numbers a wee bit to suit my voice and my
microphone choice.

Listen to your signal by recording it and then playing it back from the
various SDR remote receivers around the country.    That way you know
how your station sounds.

I strongly agree with Rick's advice. I'm retired from pro audio, did
lots of live recording, still have some great pro mics, but I've been
using the CM500 since around 2009. I can't think of a better choice. I
find the headphones comfy enough for a long weekend contest, and they
sound great!

2022-11-02 Thread Walter Underwood
I tried the Koss SB45 and hated it. It sat on top of my ears instead of around
them, unlike the CM500. Very uncomfortable. I returned them and got a new CM500
headset. Here is a blog post comparing the two.

https://observer.wunderwood.org/2021/01/27/koss-sb-45-vs-yamaha-cm500/
<https://observer.wunderwood.org/2021/01/27/koss-sb-45-vs-yamaha-cm500/>

On the cheap side, because we are hams, the Koss CS100 looks like it should
work fine for $15 (dual plug model).

Amazon says “dynamic element”, but Koss says it is an electret mic.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread john
I got a few direct emails saying the same thing. I know that you can still
purchase the CM500, it just seems to be a lot rarer than it once was. A lot
of places like B&H show the Yamaha CM500 out of stock or no longer
available. Even Yamaha USA shows the item out of stock. One Amazon seller
lists it for $109.95 + $19.95 shipping and they have a poor delivery rating.
Another Amazon seller has only 1 product review and it is not available with
Prime.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread Bernie and Cheryl

Dear Folks:

I appreciate all of the recommendations.  One of the reasons why I was
considering the Heil mikes is that I already have a pair of nice
headphones on the K3s that are comfortable to wear for hours, though
they don't have a boom mike.  I've got a Heil boom mike (Pro-7) set for
my VHF/UHF radio, and though it works well, it's too heavy for long-term
use (the satellite QSO's I make with it are all short-lived by nature).
Thus, I was looking for something that I could use with the current
headphones that I use for my CW work.

The recommendation that kept coming back multiple times was the Yamaha
CM 500, and what caught my eye is that everyone said that the headphones
are comfortable for hours on end (it's not unusual for me to have a plus
60 minute CW ragchew).

NK7I's link led me to the Amazon link for the CM 500, and with a coupon,
I was able to order it for just under $54.  At that price, it's hard to
not give it a try.  And I will look up K9YC's recommendations for TX EQ
settings.

Thanks to all for your help.  I hope to see you on the bands regardless
of the mode (CW rules!).

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-01 Thread George Fremin III
There is nothing wrong with Heil micophones. I used them for many years. What
I did not like were the headphones so I would mount the HC-4 and HC-5 booms off
of the broken headphones onto headphones that I liked to wear and listen to.
Over the years I tried many different ones. AKG-K240, Sony MDR-700 etc.

A number years ago I started using Bose QC-25 headphones because they have very
good noise cancelling and I have a window unit and amps with fans in them etc.
So I have just the kind of noise they do a very good job getting rid of - and I
would use them in CW contests. But I did not have a good way to mount a mic to
them. K3LR glues a mount onto his Bose headphones.

But I kept looking for a mic - and after some searching I found the perfect
microphone for my use.

It is called a ModMic sold by Antlion Audio - and it has a small, strong magnet
that you stick onto the phones. And then the boom mic attaches to that magnet.
And it works great. After doing a lot of tweaking and listening to recordings
made on another receiver I settled on some TX EQ settings on the K3 that I
think work very well and sound very good on the air.

The model is this one:

https://antlionaudio.com/products/modmic-uni-usb-sound-card

It comes with a usb sound card but you do not need to use that - it has a 3.5
mm plug on it that will connect to the rear mic input on the K3 and the K3 will
power the mic correctly when you turn on the bias voltage in the menu.

The TX EQ settings that I have settled on with this microphone are these:

150 hz+3
2 100 hz +3
3 300 hz 0
4 400 hz 0
5 800 hz +5
6 1600 hz +6
7 2400 hz +4
8 3200 hz +7

I tried settings that rolled off the low end in a few contests but for me this
is not work well - this gives me a fuller sound that I am much happier with and
I often get good audio reports from folks.

YMMV

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-01 Thread David Gilbert

I've never understood the appeal of the Heil microphones.  I've seen
lots of reports that they can be mechanical fragile, and literally ANY
electret microphone can be set up to work very well with a K3 or K3s.  I
used cheap computer headsets for years and always got great audio
reports, and only switched to a Yamaha C500 because I liked the
over-the-ear headphones better.  You can get great audio reports with a
Heil as well, but in my opinion you're paying for the name, not better
quality.

I strongly agree with Rick's advice. I'm retired from pro audio, did
lots of live recording, still have some great pro mics, but I've been
using the CM500 since around 2009. I can't think of a better choice. I
find the headphones comfy enough for a long weekend contest, and they
sound great!

The Yamaha CM500 plugs into the rear (with bias) and the headphones are
comfy for hours, without spending a lot (by comparison, you can get a
few for the cost of one Heil).  They block most of the noise in my
shack.  I keep a couple spares as the foam covers do wear out.

Almost any quality microphone will work with the K3s ...

For a basic dynamic mic take a look at:

For an electret, even an inexpensive "computer mic" like this
will do a credible job:

With the dynamic mic you will need to build an XLR to 3.5mm or
XLR to Foster cable. The electret will plug directly into the
rear panel mic jack.

There is no need to spend 5 to 50 times as much for something
marketed to hams .

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-01 Thread Christian Friess

Hi Folks,

As a CW op I would not care about a microphone or a headset.
But as a lucky OM with an active YL I use an inexpensive gaming headset
The N7 from NUBWO. It is connected to the rear of my K3S and the
comments about the modulation quality of the YL as well as of the OM
is good, perfect etc.

Thanks Elecraft for a wonderful radio. BTW I have never ever used such
things called equalizer.

My Heil GM5 worked FB on my K3s and also on my new K4D. I also have a
Yamaha CM500 headset with electret mic that is permanently plugged into
the read phones and mic jacks for quick switchover for contests. It too

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bernie,

I think Heil microphones are overpriced, but if you like the looks of
them, the perhaps that is an over-riding factor.

You can plug any mic with a Kenwood 8 pin connector into the front mic
jack.  There are many Kenwood compatible mics on the market - but stay
away from the amplified types (or turn the preamp off if it has one).
Most are dynamic mics, so turn bias off.

Take a look at Universal Radio for decent prices.

If you would like a headset mic, I have 2 of the Yamaha CM500s that I
like - you can plug those directly into the rear jacks for headphones
and mic.  Whatever the sales literature says, it has an electret mic, so
it needs bias turned on (unless you use the little battery box that
comes with it.
Look at audio stores to source this headset - Sweetwater Sounds, B&H
Photo are 2 reputable places that I know of.

Actually most any computer type microphone will work fine, and they are
quite inexpensive.  They are all electret type and need bias turned on.

Finally, you can tailor the sound of any mic using the TX EQ built into
the K3 - no need for a specially shaped microphone response. See Jim
Brown K9YC's recommendations (repeated many times on this reflector) for
your initial settings.
Those settings are for communications clarity and not for "broadcast
quality".  If you want "broadcast quality", you should be buying a
broadcast station IMHO, not ham radio communications.

If you need to block of lot of shack noise, there are other options,
most are expensive.
