Re: [Elecraft] Serial to USB adapters

2008-01-20 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
There have been a lot of posts on this - look for USB in the archives.
However, what works well?
KUSB from Elecfrat and Keyspan, of all the adapters on the market, Keyspan
seem to be the most reliable.

On why didn't they - lots on that too, but for one thing, USB is licensed
(adding cost) and you have to pick a particular chip set. Foe another, a lot
of Hams don't have USB and its harder/more expensive to go serial to USB.

 Hello,

Since most newer computers (at least laptops), do not have a serial port just
USB ports. What type of serial to USB adapters work well? I'm waiting for a K3
and want to be sure everything I need will be on hand when it arrives. Ordered
on 27 Dec 07, so I have lots of time. My TR-7 will have to do for now, but it
is really a nice rig in my opinion.

Why didn't they install a USB connector? Would it make too much noise and be
 hard to shield?

Still looking for a good power supply. Decided to go with a linear supply, not
 a switcher.

 Best,

Yeah, USB will probably be obsolete too by the time yours arrives. g

Seriously, the KUSB would seem to be the safe option, though I note that has
the same chipset as the one I had problems communicating with my K2 with
under Linux, and even Elecraft advises that you update to the latest
drivers. I got mine cheap on eBay.

I think the main reason for not including USB in a radio is that Elecraft
would then have to write drivers for every OS anyone would want to use. By
keeping the USB interface separate and making RS-232 the standard, they
avoid that responsibility. Also, some people still use DOS logging software
that doesn't support USB.

A better choice than USB would be ethernet, but the hardware needed to
support that in the K3 would probably add more to the cost of the K3 and be
more RF noisy.

Hi DW,

I have the KDSP USB cable that Elecraft sells for
use with the K3, and it works well.

Like you, I have nothing with a serial port.

Re: [Elecraft] Serial to USB adapters

2008-01-20 Thread Benny Aumala

I have a problem with Elecraft KUSB adapter.
It just do not work here.
My PC is IBM ThinkPad A21M and I informed my problem.
Maybe the question is the PC.
Advice was to get a new driver program or try with another PC.
I tried the new driver, no help. Sorry, I do not have plenty of PCs around.

I was lucky to have still RS232 connector, and straight wire worked.
