[Elecraft] Two K3s as Carry-on Luggage

2009-01-01 Thread J. Edward (Ed) Muns
I had two K3s and three laptops, plus all the cables, trackballs, etc. in my
carry-on luggage. Rose Kopp put some mods on the two K3 cases she made for
me so they could be attached to one another and carried with one strap so
the airline folks count it as one piece. My other carry-on luggage piece
is a roll-about computer bag. I tried running the dual K3 bag through the
security X-ray machine and it overloaded the operator. So, we had to run
each K3 through by itself. But when done individually, I've never had them
ask about it. Most of the X-ray ops ID a K3 as a slide projector, which is
fine with me.

One thoroughly inspected my KX1 and K2 at SFO, then as he was packing it
back up, said, Good DX.

I've taken my K3 as carry-on through numerous airports, without fail,
it always gets looked at, swabbed, and then they let me go...I guess I
have the thug look or something.

2009-01-01 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Heh, heh... Hams are *everywhere*

When packing stuff that will be x-rayed, it's good to consider the image the
screener will see. Years ago, when I was traveling filming documentaries, I
unthinkingly packed a brand new Beaulieu motion picture camera in a carry-on
case. The Beaulieu had a long zoom lens and a small body behind it with a nice
pistol grip underneath.

As it ran through the X-ray, the operator stopped the machine, looked, called
someone else over and, the next I knew two armed security guards escorted me to
a table where I was instructed to open the case.

And this was long before 9/11.

On the Xray, it looked exactly like some sort of automatic weapon.

After we totally disassembled the camera and they peered inside every part, I
was allowed to continue.

On subsequent flights I was careful to ask the people to inspect the contents
visually.
