I've always been happy with the Factory Knob with the Finger Dimple, but
then again I almost never touch the radio, I let Ham Radio Deluxe and DM780
do that.

Speaking of knobs for the K2, does anybody know of alternate knob types for
the knobs other than the tuning knob?

I think that a K2 would look even better with small, white-line-indexed,
fluted, skirted knobs like the ones on the old Hammarlund receivers.

I have seen a few of those from Mouser, et. al., but they seem to be either
too large in diameter, or the wrong shaft size. I would be very interested
in finding that type of knob to replace the stock knobs, even if they are
(relatively) expensive.

Dohn,

You may want to look at the Yaesu FT-847 tuning knob. I have not yet
removed mine from its home on the FT-847, but it is about 1 1/2 inch
diameter and has a finger-dimple hole and a rubber ring. Yaesu considers
the ring a separate part.

The FT-900 knob has been discontinued, and many have used the FT-100 knob
which is a bit smaller. On my K2s, I have the rubber rings from the FT-900
that are stretched a bit and placed over the stock K2 knob - you can add a
finger-dimple if you want, I have little use for them, but that is just my
style.

Why would you want to change?
Being natural has it's own beauty, witness too much makeup on a lovely lady.
And why does the ft-900 knob remind me of Jimmy Durante? :)

I agree with Chuck. I have all the Yaesu knobs because I have all the
Yaesu rigs. The K2 knob with the finger dimple is excellent. I think
you need to be careful about the amount of pressure the knob has on the
felt. At first I had it to tight. After a few tries I got excellent
feel with no backlash. It tunes very smoothly. none of the Yaesu knobs
seemed much better - although they do look nice.

I tired using the Knob from my Ten Tec Argo V, I think the shaft size was
different or poor aesthetics, it was a while ago and I don't remember exactly,
I just know that it did not work.

Then I tried a FT 100 knob for a while and I needed to add extra felt behind
the knob to keep it from being too sensitive. I ordered the knob directly from
Vertex Standard USA Customer service. It worked nice, looked pretty, but it
just kind of messed with my perfect Elecraft Mojo so I sold it.

Finally I went back to my original K2 knob and added the Finger Dimple. The pictures and description on the Elecraft web site do not do justice to this great little inexpensive addition. The Finger Dimple is perfect, if anything it should come as a standard item with every K2.

Agreed, the F-Dimp is all important. And after all the hours spent adjusting
the allen screws to eliminate any eccentricity of the tuning knob it does give
the final touch.

I like the Elecraft knob. Works fine, looks good, and isn't an additional cost
to the kit. Looking at my Yaesu and Icom rigs they would just be wrong.
Without the skirt a Drake C-Line knob might look nice. But that would be so
wrong in so many ways. (Drakes are to some of us what Collins are to others.)

RE: Re : [Elecraft] Tuning knob Alternative

2007-01-24 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
To me, a Ham is someone who can do for a dime what anyone can do for a
dollar (Oh, wait! That's the definition of an engineer! Well, one in the
same to me. That's the definition of ingenuity too.)

So I have my stock knob on my K2. As others pointed out, it's important to
adjust the felt tension correctly but, once that's done, the stock knob
turns smoothly and stays put when you let go. I haven't even bothered with
a finger dimple. It only takes the lightest touch on the face of the knob to
turn it, so I couldn't see the advantage of having to touch a specific spot.

Besides, sometimes I like to run my finger around the outer perimeter
instead to turn it. Now, I'll readily admit that the edge of the stock
knob is a bit sharp there. It should have been a smoothly rounded edge. I
know of at least one op who put his on a lathe to turn off that sharp edge.
In my case I have a nice, soft, wide rubber tire on the knob that provides
a smooth, comfortable edge for my finger to twirl or my fingers to grab the
knob and turn it if I choose.

The tire was free. It came from the green grocer holding a bunch of carrots
together.

Like as said about a dime and a dollarand free is even better, Hi

Moi aussi. I have the FT100 knob on my K2. It is much nicer to use than the
stock knob but I wish it was a bit bigger. There's not much room though for a
bigger knob on the crowded K2 front panel so I'll live with it the way it is.

I bought my knob new from Yaesu parts.

Oh boy... again... ;-))

Take a look at the Yaesu FT-100 knob... I have one on my K2, and one spare for
my next K2.

Take a look at my website at http://web.mac.com/jf.menard/

Click on the K2 MOD tab i the menu look at the last two pics... and click
on it to make it bigger...

A very nice look and feel when working with the knob.
