Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Recommendations for the K3 ATU

2008-07-04 Thread Bob W9RFS

I am using a TW2010 by TW antennas. It is a five band, 10 thru 20 meter,
compact vertical dipole. The antenna easily breaks down and stores in a
three foot long travel bag and has many good reviews on eham. I think it is
a good match with my K3 because it is very well made and very portable.
perfect for some low angle radiation near the sea shore!

RE: [Elecraft] Antenna Recommendations for the K3 ATU

2008-07-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Jim, K9YC and David, G3UNA, offer excellent suggestions: get up a basic
antenna! (I'm an open wire fan myself.)

The two biggest mistakes I see among those trying to put up a basic antenna
are:

1) Trying to use coaxial line at high SWRs. You can throw away most of your
RF easily that way.

2) Using a short (<1/4 wave) antenna with little or no ground.

For your reading enjoyment (and antenna edification) I recommend highly
these two books:

HF Antennas for All Location, Les Moxon, G6XN: An excellent reference with
>300 pages of theory and practical ideas for designing and erecting all
sorts of antennas.

Practical Wire Antennas, John D. Heys, G3BDQ: A slim (<100 page) volume with
little theory but a great many practical ideas for stringing up wire
antennas that work.

Yes, both of these books come from our fellow Hams in the British Isles, but
they are both available here in the "colonies" through the ARRL and other
sources.

There is NOTHING unique in the K3 with respect to how it works with
antennas. It is simply a very excellent radio with a very good
antenna tuner.

I've been licensed for 53 years, but off and on the air for a decade
or so twice during those years. Several years ago, I was in the same
position you are. I bought several books on antennas and studied them
extensively. I suggest that you do the same. They are the ARRL
Antenna Book and "Low Band DXing" by ON4UN.

In my experience, classic dipoles and verticals are awfully hard to
beat until you go to the trouble of a beam. Nearly all verticals need
a radial or counterpoise system of some sort to work well.

Jim Brown K9YC

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Recommendations for the K3 ATU

2008-07-04 Thread David Cutter
This is what I posted yesterday. You might look back in the Elecraft
archives for similar postings from others: I do agree with Simon about
verticals , if you are *close* to the wet, they will perform exceedingly
well. My antenna is very simple, just wire.

It's temporary, but works fine for now.

I drilled 2 holes in the bedroom wall and slid 2 lengths of nylon tube
therein, they stick out a few inches outside. A piece of 450 ladder line
about 3 ft or so goes from the PL in the rig to a connector block on the
inside wall and the 2 wires from outside feed thro to that. Height above
ground is about 15ft at this point. One wire goes to the bottom of the
garden about 3ft up, then thro a rt angle for about 6ft rising to 4ft or so.
The other wire bends at about 80deg and drops to 8ft at the garage barge
board, then thro rt angle down between the houses to a tree at the front,
about 6ft up. Wire is 20swg SnCu used on several projects. BTW no rf or
any other kind of earth on rig. Occasionally hear US 80m ssb early morning.

No balun; after initial tuning the K3 remembers its settings and changes
instantly on band change. I think I asked it to fine tune on a couple of
freqs but can't remember which. I'll try this for the cubscouts with longer
feeder for JOTA and see how it works inverted V style.

Hi
I'm setting up a station after many years absence from Amateur Radio and
hope you may be able to help.
I would appreciate other users experiences of antennas they have connected
to the K3 ATU and any opinions on the best antenna to use with the K3.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
With kind regards to all,
Allen

2008-07-04 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Allen,

1) Port Soderick - lovely location, I know it well. I am most envious.
2) I'm only using dipoles which are pretty resonant anyway, anything you can
put up there should be fine. The K3's ATU matches very well.

Were I at you place (so close to the sea) I would be looking at verticals if
you don't have a tower.

I'll be over on the Island in October some time, just can't face booking a
Fly(may)be ticket at the moment.
