Re: [Elecraft] K-pod

2016-06-15 Thread Bill
Using a keypad and the Pigknob allow me to control my K3 from the near
edge of my desk. Otherwise, I must turn my chair around and reach across
the desk to the rig. Quite frankly, for general operating, I find my
TS480 far more convenient to use. The control head is not attached to
the radio and can be placed at any location on the desk or in my lap. I
had hoped the "mini" would allow a similar operating convenience. Alas,
no - unless I wanted to spend a lot of money on a computer complex
system with wires all over the place and even then I am not sure it
would have done what I wanted.

Oh, years ago I used to play organ and never shoes on the woods. There
were a lot of stops on the bigger organs - some even placed logically
and others not so much.

Re: [Elecraft] K-pod

2016-07-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ron,

No additional programmer's manual should be necessary.
The K-Pod simply calls on the macros already stored in the K3.
The only thing added is how to assign the K-pod buttons (tap or hold) to
the macros that are stored in the K3/K3S.

The latest version of K3Utility allows for the creation and activation
of 16 K3 macros. That is the major piece of "future software", and the
future is now - just download it from the Elecraft website.

+1 on the K-Pod programmer's manual. Good call, Ron.

I assume Ron is looking for a definition of the interface / protocol between
the K-Pod and K3 / K3s.

I believe the K3 / K3s "J3" connector leveraged by the K-Pod was originally
intended to serve as a MPLAB ICD 2 (In-Circuit Debugger),

http://wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/ICD-2%20Schematic.jpg
http://wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/MPLAB%20ICD%202.jpg
http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/devicedoc/51331b.pdf

With respect to future software and interfaces ...

The owner's manual states, "Future firmware for the K-Pod that can be
downloaded from www.elecraft.com will allow you to control your personal
computer from the K-Pod through the USB interface. Your computer will
recognize the K-Pod as a human interface device such as a keyboard or
mouse."

The HID protocol is well-defined.

For now, let's see if we can get Elecraft to share the interface / protocol
between the K-Pod and K3 / K3s.

Maybe I wasn't clear. Or maybe I misunderstood what Ron was asking for.
I'm not asking Elecraft to "open source" the K-Pod firmware. I'm asking
Elecraft to publish the interface / protocol specification (not firmware)

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod

2016-07-13 Thread Dick Green WC1M
I have a couple of theories on this.

One is that a lot of owners will have already filled macros 1-8 for use with
the K3 front panel, so the K-Pod tap keys should begin with macro 9.

The other theory is that the functions you're likely to want to initiate on
the K-Pod should be hold-type to avoid accidentally triggering a macro when
tuning.

My guess is that it was probably the first theory. The second is true for
me, but I'm not sure it's true for others.

I guess my question didn't make it.

Question is:

Is the K-Pod a kit?

Can't seem to find any reference to that on the product sheet or website. If
it's been asked here before, I guess I missed it.

I assumed it is, but...

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod Question

2016-04-20 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hi Jim:

This is the announcement made by Wayne with a link to an image of the K-Pod

Hi all,

We've had many requests for a small control panel (or pod) as an extension to
the K3 and K3S transceivers. We finally got around to it!

Our new K-Pod is a very compact unit, featuring a precision tuning knob, VFO
A/B/offset rocker switch, and 8 programmable tactile-feedback switches. Switch
feedback is provided by activation messages on the radio's LCD, as well as the
pod's own 4 indicator LEDs and audio tone generator. This multi-modal
information can help maximize operating efficiency and reduce fatigue during
extended operating periods.

Typically the K-Pod would be placed next to a computer keyboard, allowing the
operator to quickly QSY, clear RIT, enter diversity mode, change menu settings,
etc., without that long stretch to reach the radio's front panel.

But the K-Pod's flexible interface goes beyond substitution of the radio's
knobs and switches. In effect, you can design your own customized controls for
the radio.

Each of the 8 programmable switches has tap and hold functions. When a switch
function is used, it activates one of up to 16 user-defined command sequences
that are actually stored in the radio itself, as macros. A single macro can
accomplish many tasks at once, such as setting up custom splits, configuring
the receiver or subreceiver for specific situations, sending transmit messages
at differing code speeds, etc. Macros can be easily created or edited using K3
Utility, which runs on PC, Mac, or Linux platforms.

The K-Pod has the following features:

* high-quality weighted, soft-touch tuning knob--same as used on the K3S
* same 400-count, ball-bearing optical encoder used in the K3 and K3S
* adjustable knob friction
* 3-position rocker switch to assign the knob to VFO A, VFO B, or RIT/XIT
* 8 programmable function switches, each with tap/hold functions
* simple switch programming using K3 Utility (many examples in K-Pod manual)
* four user-definable LEDs (three of them show knob assignment by default)
* audio tone generator for switch feedback (can be easily turned off)
* USB port for firmware loading and future equipment/computer control
applications
* simple connection to K3 or K3S--uses the 6-pin RJ-style jack beneath the
front panel
* flexible power source: rear 12-V jack on the radio, DC barrel jack,
USB port, or even through the 6-pin data cable, with minor radio modification
(the latter method results in a single cable to the K-Pod for data and power)
* 3 utility outputs for miscellaneous equipment control applications
(outputs provide a low resistance to ground when turned on, usable with
relays, etc.)

The K-Pod's all-steel enclosure weighs a full pound for excellent stability,
yet measures only about 3.5 x 3 x 1 inches. A highly stable folding tilt stand
is included to angle the panel for optimal access. There's also a 2-hole RAM
mount pattern on the bottom for easy attachment to any surface.

For photos and further information, please visit our K-Pod web page:

Wayne, N6KR

the pod’s own USB port, or any 8-15 V, 50-mA DC power source.*”

The utility RJ-45 jack *can* power the K-Pod, but that requires the
addition of a resistor in the K3/K3S. It is an easy mod to install.

Correct, if your K3 is appropriately configured. IIRC, there is a necessary
mod to provide adequate power that isn't in all earlier K3's. I run my
K*Pod with a single cable. N.B. It's a "special" cable with no connection
between the Pins 1, not a standard 6-conductor RJ45 cable.

Yes, I do it all the time. I'm using a full K3 as the remote control head.
Can't answer for K3/0 or K3/0 Mini.

They're stored on the remote K3. The eight buttons on K*Pod launch 16
macros (Tap vs. Hold) stored on the radio. In your case of operating a
shared station, you might want to coordinate macro definition with the
station owner.

Check out the manual, downloadable from Elecraft.

The KPod can also be run with its own power supply. I found the
modification to my K3 easy, but I also decided to practice SMD
rework and remove the high value resistor and replace it with
the low value resistor instead of just paralleling them. (Yeah,
I know, I was just showing off.)

The bottom line is that you have a bunch of choices how you
connect it and power it. I went for minimum cables.

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD labels

I used the adhesive backed 12mm wide tape from an old Brother P-Touch on
small print which is about 1/8 of an inch. I then cut them down to about
3/16 width by 2-1/2" long. I put one on each side of each row of F keys.
It's the same tape I use for labeling all the cables in the shack.

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD labels

I made my labels on my P-Touch label machine [identical to the Brother
machine] that prints on white adhesive tape.  Each button is an
individual piece of tape.  At the smallest font, there's room for
2-lines of 3 characters, top is TAP, bottom is HOLD.  KPOD has really
changed the way I operate.

I have used the P-touch labels but stick them on a pre-cut magnetic strip
this way you can have add or remove them from the K-pod. The labels are held
in place by the magnet. This way you can have a set for contesting, QSO and

Chuck, this solution is in line with my first opinion. In the past I used on
a home made superkeyer III a transparent adhesive sheet that I printed with
a laser printer, with black characters, with great result. Here the problem
is the black face of KPOD.
It should be a clear and not transaparent sheet printed with laser printer
or better a black sheet printable in white with a color printer.
Great but not easy, sure it is simpler the Brother o Dymo thermal printer
way...

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD labels

2018-08-30 Thread Eric Rosenberg
Brother P-Touch labels fit between the K-POD function buttons.

The best is TZ-211, 6 mm (1/4"). The next larger size, TZ-221, 9mm, (3/8") is
just a hair too tight for me. Both are black print over a white background
(which covers the F Key label on the K-POD. There are lots of choices of both
background and type colors.

Magnets did not work for me for two reasons. The narrowest magnetic tape is
1/2", which requires trimming. More of an issue is that the magnet isn't
strong enough to stay in place in the K-POD.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod Questions

2016-07-12 Thread Bill Frantz
If your K3S is connected to your computer, the FT232R USB UART
is probably the one in the K3S that connects your computer to
the K3S's programming interface. There should also be a USB
AUDIO CODEC.

When I look at my K-Pod which is connected to the computer for
power, I don't see anything. It is probably just looking like a
USB charger.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod Usability

I've been looking at the K-Pod, but since I already have a PigKnob I
decided to wait a bit and see how things shake out. While it worked out OK
in the NAQP this weekend, I can see where Ed has used the K-Pod in areas
that the Pig won't mimic and would be very helpful.

Also, I haven't been able to find any reference as yet, but does the K-Pod
also work with the K3/0 mini in remote operations?

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod utility?

2016-08-16 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Jim,

We already have this implemented. Should have full details later this week.

Short version: there are two new commands you can put in K3 macros that
directly control the K-Pod's LEDs and AUX outputs. This is very flexible,
allowing you to control both the radio and K-Pod at the same time, with
arbitrary LED and AUX assignments to switch functions.

Re: [Elecraft] K-pod question

2016-12-11 Thread Ed Muns
Hopefully, someone from Elecraft will address this question soon, but
meanwhile here is what I've discovered.

I have two K-Pods, each with firmware 1.02. When Mike contacted me off-list
about this "D4 always on" question, I replied no, D4 should not be on. It
has never been on in my units.

Then, I updated to K-Pod Production firmware version 1.09 today and guess
what? Now, my D4 LEDs were on all the time. Moreover, the K-Pod command to
turn them off didn't work. In fact, none of the K-Pod commands worked.

I had the latest Production MCU/FP/DSP firmware installed so it never
occurred to me that maybe the Beta firmware was required. Nonetheless, I
installed the latest Beta firmware and the D4 LED extinguished as soon as
Beta FP 1.26 installed. And, now all the K-Pod commands work again.

So, if (1) you are a recent recipient of a K-Pod with 1.09 firmware, or (2)
have updated your K-Pod to firmware version 1.09, you might need to load the
Beta MCU 5.54/FP 1.26/DPS 2.88 firmware if the issues described here concern
you. As far as I could tell, all other aspects of the K-Pod worked fine
with K-Pod 1.09 and the current Production K3 firmware versions.

Mike VE3WDM asked:

Good afternoon, I just connected the K-pod to my K3 for the first time after
updating the firmware to the latest. I noticed that D4 is always on just
wondering if this is normal?

My D4 is always on too, as I have upgraded to the latest release. Although
I have had my KPod for a while, I just started using mine regularly. I
thought there were a couple of macros that didn't work right, but I
attributed that to my lack of macro experience on the K3. I will take a
closer look now and see if the Beta firmware is the fix.

My K-Pod with the latest firmware release does not show such symptom. So D4 is

This sends VFO A to 20 Mhz:  FA0002000;MD5;FB0001500;BW0300;
But does not send VFO B to 15 Mhz

What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD Macro

2016-12-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Irwin,

My guess is that you do not have VFO IND turned ON in the menu.
You are trying to set the VFOs to two different bands and that requires
VFO INDependent. See page 37 of the K3 manual for full disclosure.

Re: [Elecraft] K-pod question

2016-12-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
For those who do not want to load beta firmware, you will have to
tolerate the problem until 5.54 (or later) is moved to production status.

For those who are cautious about beta firmware, if you want the
function, go ahead and download it (follow the Beta Firmware
Installation instructions), and run it. You can always retract to the
production level.

At Elecraft, Beta firmware is not "flaky" code. It simply implements
the latest upgrades and is out "for test". If problems are discovered
with it (what, if anything, was broken by the changes), then it will be
superseded by another Beta version. When a good Beta version has been
determined, it will be promoted to production status. In other words,
the beta version is not "in development" and will not be changed with
the same release number. It has already gone through initial Alpha testing.

So for those who want the added function(s) more quickly than that Beta
testing process allows, download and install the beta. If you find
problems, report them - that problem seeking/reporting is the intent of
beta firmware.

I have two K-Pods, each with firmware 1.02. When Mike contacted me
 off-list
about this "D4 always on" question, I replied no, D4 should not be on. It
has never been on in my units.

Then, I updated to K-Pod Production firmware version 1.09 today and guess
what? Now, my D4 LEDs were on all the time. Moreover, the K-Pod command
 to
turn them off didn't work. In fact, none of the K-Pod commands worked.

I had the latest Production MCU/FP/DSP firmware installed so it never
occurred to me that maybe the Beta firmware was required. Nonetheless, I
installed the latest Beta firmware and the D4 LED extinguished as soon as

So, if (1) you are a recent recipient of a K-Pod with 1.09 firmware, or (2)
have updated your K-Pod to firmware version 1.09, you might need to load
 the
Beta MCU 5.54/FP 1.26/DPS 2.88 firmware if the issues described here
 concern
you. As far as I could tell, all other aspects of the K-Pod worked fine
with K-Pod 1.09 and the current Production K3 firmware versions.

Subject: [Elecraft] K-Pod question

When the K-Pod was first introduced, there was some indication that a
future enhancement would allow it to control the P3 - specifically, to
adjust the markers and 'tap to QSY'.

Is this feature available yet, or imminent?

I discovered that the P3 is pretty useful for unassisted search and pounce
in last weekend's RTTY contest - While working one station on VFO-A, I'd
move marker A up to the 'mark' tone of the next RTTY signal up the band. As
soon as the QSO was logged, a tap on the P3 knob would jump to the next
station to work. Then move Marker A again and repeat. With a little
practice, and the SPAN set fairly narrow, I could nail the tuning every
time, provided I didn't bump the P3 knob when tapping it.

Although that worked well, it was a lot of reaching to the P3. It would be
a BIG improvement if a K-Pod, right next to the keyboard, could control
those functions.

Can it?

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod question

2017-01-16 Thread Dave Fugleberg
I experimented a bit with the method suggested by Fred, using VFO-B to
'mark' the next signal up the band, and then using A/B to 'jump' to it.
That works, but of course after each 'jump', VFO-B is at the frequency of
the previous QSO. That means a little extra excursion to tune VFO-B past
the current VFO-A frequency to get to the next one up the band. No big
deal, just not quite as nice as using the markers on the P3.
Anyhow, thanks for the tip. In hindsight it's pretty obvious, but I
wouldn't have thought of it without your suggestion.

Hi Dave,

You could make the macro be A/B (SWT11) and then A>B (SWT13) which would align

current VFO-A frequency to get to the next one up the band. No big deal, just
not quite as nice as using the markers on the P3.
Anyhow, thanks for the tip. In hindsight it's pretty obvious, but I wouldn't
have thought of it without your suggestion.

Can it?

The K3 contains CONFIG:FUNCTION VFO B->A by assigning that function to

Unfortunately you can't use that Config menu directly in a macro to execute

holds that key and then have the KPod execute the macro.

You could assign it to a PF key and then make a macro that holds
thatkey and then have the KPod execute the macro.

That's what I said ... assign Function VFO B -> A to one of the PF
keys (e.g. PF1) and use it instead of A/B. It's actually closer
to the VFO B knob than A/B and easier to reach.

I have a keypad - using 47 of 48 keys now - and am looking forward to
the K-pod also. The beauty of macros for these devices is setting up
things "your" way. I even moved the direct keyboard frequency entry to
the keypad. So much handier.

I already have a list of macros for the K-pod. After all, a button is a

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod and Marcos

2016-06-15 Thread Jim McDonald
I use several with DXLab's Commander rig control module. They use standard
K3 commands so could be used with a K-Pod. They are in the Files area of
the Yahoo Group for DXLab. I believe you need to be a member of that Yahoo
Group to access them; they are at http://tinyurl.com/q5lqaa4 .

The ones I use in Commander include, Spot, VOX, Tune (at 15W, then back to
full power), speakers on/off, TX test, one to adjust the tuning rate using
CONFIG:VFO CTS, one to select two different mics, one on the front and one
connected to the back, each with different TX settings, front/rear panel mic
selection, and another to do a "reverse split."

Hi,

As I sit awaiting the K-Pod I'm looking for possible uses of it
beyond the remote tuning knob. . Suddenly 16 possible selections will be
available
with the TAP or HOLD functions of the PB switches .So far I have seven
potential uses with 2 still at the K3 using the PF buttons. A lot of
potential will be sitting unused.

Looking back Fred, KE7X proposed a macro repository and it still
exists
here:

http://www.ke7x.com/home/k3-macro-repository

It is certainly underutilized. Another source is Dave's, NK7Z. keyboard
project:

http://nk7z.net/adding-an-external-keypad-to-the-k3/

A Google search reveals more macro's. But not any central location. The
value
of a central location is not entirely in preventing reinventing the wheel.
There are many clever individuals on this list and the real value of a
repository is in the "Aha" moment of "Why didn't I think of that.".

I'd love to see a central location. It may be Elecraft could host it.
Possibly with 2 areas. Elecraft checked for all models and unchecked user
submitted
macro's. Elecraft hosting surely would be a value added to their product
line. A concept from the new KX2 may be adaptable to a K3/K3S. But sharing
is required.

Yes. Short summary - the mod is simple IF you have the right parts. Solder
a 6.8 ohm resistor across R82 (i.e. in parallel) on the Front Panel Board.
No need to remove any panels but unscrew the 3 top and 2 bottom screws
holding the FPB to the chassis and then use a flat head screw driver in the
2 bottom slots to pry FPB apart from chassis.

Elecraft provides both 1/10 W SMD (0603 size) and leaded 1/8 W resistors in
the kit. 0603 SMD is a bit of a challenge but makes a very neat
installation if you're experienced with soldering SMD, or Elecraft will
install the mod for you if you email k3support at elecraft.com or call
831-763-4211.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod VFO B

2017-02-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ted,

On the K-Pod, with the rocker switch in the VFO B position, it will do
whatever the VFO B knob on the K3 will do.
If you have VFO B Alternate Display up, it will rotate between the
Alternate Display items, just like the VFO B knob would do.

You could create a macro that would switch the display from the
alternate VFO B display to the frequency display and use a K-Pod F
button to activate that macro.

control the VFO. As I thought about it, that does make sense – the VFO B knob
itself controls one or the other depending on how the display is set. I
assume, then, that the K-Pod’s encoder output is superimposed on the K3’s
encoder B rather than having its own entryway into the VFO. It’s not a big
problem, but it would be nice if the time and etc. display could stay visible
yet have the K-Pod control VFO B’s frequency. When using a P3 with the K3 in
split it’s not always necessary to have the VFO B frequency shown in the
display area. Is there some way to have one’s clock and B it too?

Neat idea, Don. Thanks! It wouldn’t create a simultaneous display but it
would allow the display toggle from the same place where the K-Pod’s VFO B knob
is. The macro would be a cinch – I think it would just be SWT08; emulating a
tap on the DISP button, assigned to an unused tap or hold on the K-Pod.
[that’s a semi-colon after SWT08 – they don’t always show up that way in the
reflector message.] I’m not in a place where I can test it tonight. Will try
it tomorrow.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod software 1.09

2017-06-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Art,

Yes, the K-Pod knob moves at 1/2 the rate of the K3 VFO knob. It is
intended to be that way.

The software does not change that relationship. There were counts being
lost between the K-Pod and the K3. That was what the buffer fixed.

The description of the update states ":Changes encoder operation to allow the K-Pod

However, that's not my experience. I have the VFO set to 200 CTS, so the K-Pod
should match it after this update. However, the K-Pod only moves 100
CTS-exactly half of what the main VFO moves. Tried going to 400 CTS on the main
VFO. K-Pod then moves 200 CTS.

Hi Don,

Wasn't the K-Pod tuning rate to match the K3 rate added to the future
firmware list shortly after the K-Pod came out? I don't understand the
design rationale to tune at the 1/2 rate. I would like to see it match the
rate or have a configuration setting.

Mitch,

I recall that the rate difference was discussed and decided to be the
best during Field Test of the K-Pod.
I don't recall any attempts to have the firmware match them. You would
have to search the archives for that information.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod Tuning rate

2017-06-19 Thread NW0M
Don,

Below is a post from Wayne last year stating they plan to make the K-Pod
tuning rate a configuration setting. Not a big deal but maybe we'll get an
update on this. Tnx.

"The K3 and K3S both use all 400 counts of the VFO A and B encoders (100
pulses/track/revolution).

The K-Pod defaults to 200 counts. During our testing we found that this
provided the best compromise between precision and "fussiness" for typical
K-Pod operations.

We plan to add a function to K-Pod Utility (which itself isn't quite ready
yet) that will allow the user to change this to 100/200/400.

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD LED 4

2018-01-03 Thread Tony G6GLP

Hi John,
I would check the s/w versions of each of the rigs and kpods to make
sure they are all the same.
try exchanging one kpod with the other and see if the led on stays with
the rig or the kpod.

My guess is the sw in one of the devices is lower than the other device.

same, in the Elecraft utility, I tried KPLED4ON; and KPLED4OFF; with each
unit and it had no effect so I still have one K-POD with the LED 4 on and
one with LED 4 off. I tried typing this command in the test area and also
I created a temporary macro button and neither had any effect. How can I
turn this light on or off?

I'd use the "Car Talk" method - put a piece of black tape over the LED you
don't want to see.
