Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Compiz is dead

2012-12-29 Thread Alfredo Hernández
I'm very happy to hear this, Compiz is old and most of its code are cool
things to show how cool can the GNU/Linux desktop (e.g., desktop 3D cubes,
fire animation on drop down menus, etc.) - which, in my opinion is useless
-.

It is time to start making beautiful yet useful WM; Gala and Mutter are
excellent exemples.

2012-12-29 Thread David Gomes
I'm not that happy to hear this unlike Alfredo, but I really hope Ubuntu
stops making Unity as a Compiz plugin, it was one of their worst decisions
ever. Unity should be a WM itself. Right now, the whole Ubuntu desktop is a
*dirty hack*, unlike on elementary OS, where our structure is clean and
functional.

Libmutter may be not as great as it sounds because it bears an enormous
legacy of X11 hacks and quirks back from Metacity days. I wish there was
libweston that worked like libmutter for wayland instead of weston being a
collection of completely random features that follow no UX guidelines at
all.

Rip in peace flame-bursting windows. Is it wishful thinking to hope
libmutter will do all the wayland work for us?

It will, but it won't be as optimized/fast/lightweight as Weston is.

Well, maybe happy is not the right word. What I mean is the same as you, I
that Unity, for instance, is not optimal as elementary OS and GNOME Shell
are. As you said, Compiz workarounds feel just like a dirty hack.

I think Mutter (and even Shell) does currently run on Wayland. But I could be
wrong.

Sam gave us a shout out on Reddit for using LibMutter saying that having two
shells (GNOME and Pantheon) on one WM implementation is the way forward.
