RE: Copy of: GROUND COLOR CODE FOR CE MARK (EN60204-1)

Hi Christian.

You asked.

My interpretation of the scene is that ALL wires that are there to provide
a path for fault currents for the purposes of protective grounding, should
be green/yellow, and should be given their own terminal. Any other wires,
whether analogue reference grounds, screening, power returns, anything,
should be the colour most related to their purpose. E.g. if the wire
carries an a.c. control voltage common, then red. If the wire carries a
d.c. control or power return, then blue. If an analogue reference then
black. etc. etc. I do not expect to see different colour wires on one
terminal post.

Just an opinion, and the way I've been doing it for years.

FYI - The address I used about a month ago to register was:
http://www.dodssp.daps.mil it may still get you to the same place as the
other address. It then took about 3-4 days to get my account number/password
(whatever you want to call it). I then downloaded a copy of MIL-STD-461E
with no hassle.
Good Luck!

Trouble is, my copy of UL1950 seems to have pages missing (thanks to

Section 2.5.5 of IEC 60950 specifies the green/yellow or other options for

conductor is one required for the safety reasons defined. Grounding
conductors that are not for safety must NOT be green/yellow.

Christian,

My recollection on subject standard's colors for ground other than primary
safety ground is that they can be any color you choose as long as you are
consistently using the same color chosen for grounds or other signal and they
are labelled as to their function (e.g. GND) or signal designation ( e.g. 5
Vdc, etc.) at each end where they are serviceman accessible.

I invoke the following disclaimer recently suggested by Oscar Overton for the
  above.

The previous is just my opinion (humble or otherwise) and should not be

Subject: GROUND COLOR CODE FOR CE MARK (EN60204-1)

Hello to everybody:

I have a doubt regarding the color code for ground cables according
EN60204-1 (for CE mark):

In the norm is stated that all protective earth wires MUST be yellow green.

Now my question is the following:

What color must be cables that are connected to ground because they need to
be referenced to ground, but are NOT protective earth wires? (ex: secondary
of a transformer,...that

´s what I think is called functional equipotential
conections )

According to the norm seems that they still need to be yellow-green, but
one guy from TUV told me that these wires MUST NOT be yellow-green (they
could be any different color except yellow-green).

I appreciate your comments, and advises of were to find this information.
Thanks.

Peter,

EN 50082 is the generic immunity standard. It applies to all products for
which a product specific immunity standard has not been written.

EN 55024 (based on CISPR 24 with certain modifications) is the product
specific immunity standard for Information Technology Equipment (ITE). It
replaces EN 50082 for those products.

RE: copper properties & MIL-STD 461 & 462

1999-12-14 Thread Price, Ed

Jose:

The best source of information about MIL-STD-461 is the standard itself. All
of the requirements are defined very thoroughly (well, maybe not so thorough
for Methods CS103, CS104 & CS105) within the document, and an Appendix A is
provided which gives you a discussion of the purposes, problems and
rationale behind each of the Test Methods.

Remember that the "D" revision has now been superseded by the "E" version.
What used to be MIL-STD-461D and the separate MIL-STD-462D have now been
combined into a single document, which is MIL-STD-461E. New equipment should
be qualified to the "E" version, but existing equipment may still be tested
under the version in effect at the time of the original qualification. So,
don't throw away your "B", "C" or "D" versions.

UL 1950 Labelling

1999-12-14 Thread Paul Smith

Is anybody aware of any requirements in UL1950 that limits the size of
allowable text for the rating plate/rear panel I/O identifications?
Obviously it must be legible!
Trouble is, my copy of UL1950 seems to have pages missing (thanks to the BSI
PLUS update system), so I can't find anything about it.

RE: IEC801-4 (1998) & EN61000-4-4

1999-12-14 Thread Mike Hopkins

IEC 801-4 is now obsolete and has been replaced by IEC 61000-4-4. They are
essentially the same, and most simulators designed to test IAW 801-4 can
also be used with 61000-4-4.

I can help with specific questions about 61000-4-4, but don't remember
enough about 801-4 to make detailed comparisons.

I'm currently convenor of IEC TC 77B WG11, which is responsible for
61000-4-4 and we plan to start a revision of this document, as well as
61000-4-5, in April. If there are areas of these document that anyone feels
need to be clarified or changed, I'd like to get that information for the
Working Group. Thanks

Re: GROUND COLOR CODE FOR CE MARK (EN60204-1)

1999-12-14 Thread Paul J Smith

I invoke the following disclaimer recently suggested by Oscar Overton for the
  above.

The previous is just my opinion (humble or otherwise) and should not be
construed as the opinion of my employers (past, present, and future) ; spouse,
offspring, or blood relatives; local, state, federal, international, galactic,
or universal law, nor any entity of creation - living, dead, or resurrected.

If questions, please contact me ASAP.

Thanks.

Re: copper properties & MIL-STD 461 & 462

1999-12-14 Thread Ken Javor
Answer to question #1:For all practical purposes, the shielding
effectiveness (SE) of Cu sheet is infinite. Whatever enclosure you build,
its SE will be limited not by the conductivity of Cu, but by the seams and
apertures inherent in any useful structure. unless you are looking for SE
at dc, Cu or Al is more than sufficient. If you need a dc magnetic
field-free zone, then and only then do you have to start looking at
ferromagnetic materials.

Answer to question #2:I assume you have the standards themselves (by the
way, MIL-STD-461E is the present revision, which combines -461D/-462D, plus
minor changes). So you are looking for additional supporting material.
There are lots of people doing seminars. R&B comes to mind. I used to do a
one week -461/-462 testing seminar. I have all the slides and sample test
procedures. I don't know they would be worth much without the accompanying
spiel and hands-on test experience, but if you have specific questions, I do
have the answers.

1999-12-14 Thread Edward Fitzgerald

Peter,

In brief, EN 50 082 is the generic standard and
EN 50 024 is a product standard that takes precedence over the generic
standard.

I hope this helps a little, let me know if you need a more in depth
answer.

RE: IEC801-4 (1998) & EN61000-4-4

1999-12-14 Thread Hougaard, Niels

Hello Leslie,

The EN 61000-4-4 (1995) standard says in the endorsement notice:
"The text of the International Standard IEC 1000-4-4 (1995) was approved by
CENELEC as a European Standard without any modification."

In the foreword to the IEC 1000-4-4 (1995) it says that this standard is
based on IEC 801-4 (1988), but the scope of the IEC 1000-4-4 (1995) has been
extended to all kinds of electrical and electronic equipment. For this
purpose it has bbeen decided to transfer the 801 series of publications to
the IEC 1000, part 4 series.
It too says:
"No technical changes, only editorial amendments have been made with this
transfer and reference to IEC 801-4 (1988) or IEC 1000-4-4 is equivalent."

As EN 61000-4-4 (1995) is the same as IEC 1000-4-4 (1995) there is no
difference between IEC 801-4 (1998) and EN 61000-4-4, in terms of test
method, procedures, limit, etc..
