There is significant evidence that some young people are damaging their hearing. But this is much more likely to be due to clubbing than to portable audio products. Orchestral players wear ear-plugs these days. It seems to me that the only way to reliably limit the sound pressure applied to eardrums is to require a physical limit on the amount of air an *earphone* can move. Without knowing the acoustic efficiency of whatever transducer a user has, it is difficult, and perhaps impossible, to do so at the electronics end. Yes, that's what EN 55032-2 simply doesn't work, since that is what it tries to do. EN 55032-1 applies to players sold with their headphones, limits the sound pressure level from the headphones when fed from the player, and the test conditions are with everything 'set to maximum'. This isn't realistic even for heavy-metal material, and pretty disastrous for classical music. -- OOO - Own Opinions Only. RE: France Decree - Public Health Code on personal stereo equipment
Dear Alain, Thanks. Your reply increases the confidence for believing this Decree is officially published and enacted. You may like to see the following link where translates the Article L. 5232-1 into English. http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en u=http://www.admi.net/jo/20051228/SANP0524596A.html http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en sl=fru=http://www.admi.net/jo/20051228/ Considering another comment from Mr. John Woodgate, I think John hit the good points. That's why we are still hesitant to proceed necessary steps. Taking acoustic performance, customer/user expectations, and many other aspects into account, it's hard to decide in order to just meet the France Decree. It would be much appreciate if any other comment from the group. It's going to limit SPL (Sound Pressure Level) from personal stereo equipment to 100 dB. If this decree has been enacted, then the enforced date will be from 1 May 2006. UK objected very strongly in CENELEC about the underlying standard EN 50332-1. The French Decree initiative exists because they had no success in persuading the Commission that a Directive should be enacted. UK position, endorsed by organizations concerned with hearing loss, is that the way to stop people damaging their hearing is public education. The reason is that there are MANY ways to damage your hearing and playing a CD player too loud is just one. Also, we don't have any evidence that a significant number of people DO play them too loud. The one item on the site below that mentions players mentions exposure time but says nothing about sound level. Otherwise it's very sensible: http://www.dontlosethemusic.com/home/ I am not sure if this France Decree is still a proposed draft or has been officially published and enacted?
