Re: Software and Safety
Jim Folks Possibly not a lot of use to you guys in the US etc, but my company, ERA Technology Ltd, runs courses on software safety in the UK - see www.era.co.uk. I have been on several and they are not too bad! Therefore I say this not to promote the company as such but to bring them to the attention of anyone who is interest. RE: Software and Safety
While I have not read this book, a colleague that read it commented that there was poor math use in this publication (not certain what he meant). Anyway, some references (that I have used) for mission-critical/safety-critical s/w development: Code Complete by Steve McConnell Any book by Jack Ganssle (www.ganssle.com) MISRA C UL 1998 (have not actually read it, but used a checklist based on this standard) DO-178B EN 50128 IEC 60880 IEC 61508 UK Defense Standard 00-56 (have not actually read it, but used a checklist based on this standard) luck, Brian -Original Message- From: oover...@lexmark.com [ mailto:oover...@lexmark.com] Sent: Friday, August 22, 2003 4:18 AM To: peter merguerian Cc: emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org Subject: Re: Software and Safety Peter, This isn't an article but it is an excellent book in the scope of your question. Peter Peter, Take a look at the IEC 61508 series of functional safety standards. While CPU cooling in computers could rely on software, I would have thought that the purely thermal aspect would be a reliability consideration rather than safety, since CPUs are usually kept well away from accidental finger contact for functional reasons?
