I'm not aware of anything specifically like this. The Mesa folks (and
others) use the parallel port in EPP mode and get something like what
you're talking about. I've considered taking the AVR and using it as
a "poor-man's" Mesa, but I'm not sure it's going to be worth the hassle.

It would provide a fairly easy way to expand the I/O, and get full
support for multiple analog channels via the A/D.

It seems perfectly reasonable. I am planning on just using something
like a 555 timer to convert the thermistor resistance into a frequency
that can be sampled by the HAL parallel port or (if I need more
resolution) using the analog audio input and something like aubiopitch.

I think I'm heading down pretty much exactly the same path you are,
although I've been recently side-tracked actually trying to assemble
my MendelMax 3D printer.

I picked up some proto-shield boards cheap off eBay (see item
280871493314), which I plan on using to replace the Arduino by tying
directly to the parallel port.

...but first I have to finish the 3D printer, which is *ALMOST* done.

*wanders off to work on the wiring harness*

[Emc-users] RepRap RAMPS stepper controller board with LinuxCNC?

2012-06-13 Thread Scott Hasse
All-

I am starting in with some experiments using the RepRap RAMPS board (
http://reprap.org/wiki/Arduino_Mega_Pololu_Shield) (basically a 3-5 axis
small stepper driver board with additional heater outputs and temperature
inputs), but instead of using an Arduino with firmware like sprinter for
controlling it, I plan to use LinuxCNC with a parallel port. To that end
I've acquired an Intel 525MW board and am so far very pleased with it. To
adapt a parallel port to drive the RAMPS board, I plan to make a small
circuit board with the same footprint as the Arduino shield that would
normally drive the RAMPS board, but route the parallel port pins instead to
the shield headers.

I am expecting this will generally be fairly straightforward, and there is
just barely enough parallel I/O to be workable, but I have a few questions
that I thought I would run by you all:

1) Many of the output pins are step/dir which of course will require real
time control, but others things like heater outputs, etc, that would not
suffer too much from increased latency. Has anyone used a latching shift
register for extending parallel port output for cases where latency is less
of a concern?

2) I've gotten some basic encoder-based frequency-based analog input
working in other scenarios (
http://code.google.com/p/sector67-sandbox/wiki/FrequencyBasedAnalogInput)
and plan to use that for the analog temperature inputs on the parallel port
if feasible. Does that seem reasonable?

3) Has anyone else done anything similar to this? I've followed the
http://reprap.org/wiki/EMCRepRap effort, but that doesn't use the RAMPS
board. I expect the user interface and gcode translation tools from that
project to be quite useful.

Thanks,

Scott

I got that impression very clearly several years ago when I bought a length
of 1/2x10 Acme bolt, and 2 bronze nuts. They were damned proud of those
nuts too, just under $40 each in bronze. Shipped the screw in a round
cardboard tube that wasn't much stronger than newsprint, so of course the
screw was bent about 1/2" in the middle by the time it got to WV. I
straightened something less than half of it for my first pass at a Z drive
but found that with the screw in the OEM position behind the post, that no
amount of torque on the screw would put more than 5 lbs of downforce on a
drill bit, even more worthless than those famous tits on a boar hog.

So I turned the head housing 90 degrees on the spindle sleeve, making room
for the screw to come down the front of the post about 2" away from it,
sank it into the top of the sled casting with a nut on the inside, then
moved the nuts to a sleeve with a ball thrust bearing top & bottom, put a
toothed belt pulley between them, and the bronze nuts threaded into the
sleeve above & below the bearings and the motor on a plate off the bottom
of the top bearing block. The same motor that was slipping cogs at 5 lbs
on a bathroom scale now puts 155 lbs on the bathroom scale. All in the
geometry.

I've seen this reported before and always followed by a big chorus
of "works for me!" I think something really must be going on.

If I had to guess (and I do, as I have no data) I'd suspect that
something different happens when the installer finds an internet
connection vs. when it doesn't. Perhaps apt is nuking linuxcnc
because a dependency is not met. You should have a dpkg/apt log
available after the install, and it may contain the smoking gun.

Please let us know what you find.

IIRC You have D525. Any particular reason not to boot/instal from usb
drive instead of using more and more cd/dvd matrices? Usb has always
worked like a charm for me with all my D510/D525 installs. But I have
had issues with booting from CD, although the same iso image has been

You can buy balls crews from Amazon:

And I have argued several times that we are almost always going to be
happy with the inaccurate stuff. Especially over the length of a lathe
cross-slide. (and where you are probably touching off anyway, so only
really care that 50 thou is very nearly exactly 50 thou.

So I got the stopwatch out:

8 sec to the main screen(about time to turn on the air, check

not too shabby, but not near 3 sec.

I still don't know about getting down to 3 seconds, but in addition to what
that article says, you can also try:

1> Set BIOS to quick boot, bypass POST, etc.
2> In BIOS set boot drive as first device in boot order.
3> Use a SATA SSD.
4> Use as much memory as the mother board will accommodate.
5> Use Xubuntu instead of ubuntu (Use Linuxcnc install script).
6> Play with grub boot parameters (i.e. remove "quiet splash").
7> Map log files to null or RAM (see:
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Install_To_CompactFlash)
8> Uninstall any unnecessary applications.
9> Use "bum" (boot-up manager) to remove unnecessary services.

Eric

Have a look at post 15 onwards here:
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/mini_lathe/63621-mini_lathe_cross_slide_ballscrew-2.html

That's a description and pictures of how I fitted that size of screw
to my lathe.

The salient points are that the drive is in one place, but the thrust
bearings are moved outboard to be out of the way.
And that it took a bit of surgery.

usr/share/gtksourceview-2.0/language-specs/ngc.lang AFAIK if you just
delete it you will get normal black and white which is less annoying
than rainbow random colors from the current one. Anyway deleting it
worked for me.

It just worked, no problems and a working LinuxCNC install.

The difference might be that I have always been installing to a new blank drive
(real or VM)

I can't see the blues very well on the monitor I use on the lathe, so I've
been using vim in straight black and white. But for GCode, I would also
like to use Gedit. I'll give this one a shot later today.

I just tried to install the LiveCD again after last night leaving me at
the maroon screen of death and the only thing that got installed from
LinuxCNC was the docs in english and truetypetracer...

2012-06-13 Thread John Thornton
Andy,

Thanks for the link, I can't wait to try Nick's highlighting out as soon
as I can get LinuxCNC to install... what was the result of your tests
last night? I know Tom_itx had the same problem that I did and gave up
and used the install script.

No clue on the LiveCD issue, but I found that this highlighting file was better:

[Emc-users] LiveCD Fails to install LinuxCNC

2012-06-13 Thread John Thornton
So while trying to fix the eye killing psychedelic highlighting in gedit
for a ngc file I somehow broke LinuxCNC and it would not execute a named
or numbered subroutine from the mdi anymore and would give me a "File
not open" error when I tried to execute a subroutine so I gave up and
grabbed what I thought was the last LiveCD that I had burned and iirc
the one that I used on the BP to install LinuxCNC. After installing
there was no CNC menu and LinuxCNC was not installed so I assumed I had
the wrong disk and went and found another disk and got the same result.
One of the two was ubuntu only for sure... so I said screw this and I'll
just download the LiveCD again and burn a new disk on my winblows
desktop. Next install still no CNC. So I downloaded it again on the
ubuntu machine and burned another LiveCD. When I selected just try it or
what ever it is the CNC menu showed up so I assumed all was well so I
installed it and bam no LinuxCNC.

MB 525, was running 2.5 from buildbot...

Any clues?

John
