Then there's the power supply or supplies and a
controller to buy. Also, those are used parts. Could last
forever, could last just until the point where the seller
 won't replace them.

Used parts so well tested :-)
Those drives are mains-input so there is no need for a separate power supply.

I don't have 3 phase power in my shop, if a converter would run them I'd need a
separate one just for those. Still something to keep on the maybe list. It
depends on how much I can get out of the lathes I have for sale.

I looked up the specs on the HC-KFS43B. They're wee little things. Smaller than
the DC brush motors on it. For the Z axis I can't go any larger diameter than
the Baldor that's on it.

Rated torque of those AC motors is 1.3 NM, peak torque 3.9 NM.

I don't know the rated torque of the current motors, their peak/stall is 3 NM.
I didn't see any torque numbers other than the peak/stall when looking for
specs on the vintage ones. Dunno if 1.3 NM would be enough to move that large
table around, though it has ball screws and cogged belt reduction drives.

The MR-J2S-40B1 looks like it would suit me better since the label only shows 1
phase power input.

[Emc-users] slow speed stepping - am I missing something?

2013-08-04 Thread John Alexander Stewart
I have a stepper based mill that I have reconfigured to use a Gecko G540.

Stepper motors rated 3A, with the G540 resistor setup, I'm using a 2.2k
resistor, giving 2.2A. Power supply is 43v. (48 v switcher, tuned down to
43v because that's the voltage the G540 docs say to use with the inductance
of these motors)

It can run all day back and forth, always hitting 0, at speeds like up to
1,000 MM/min, and faster.

When I try 5mm/min, the machine is fine. 2mm/min and it's fine, too, but at
about 1mm/min, the machine misses steps. Or, will not step at all.

I have the system apart, and have the ability to tweak the G540 trim pots,
and no matter what I do, I can't get the machine to step at about 2mm/min
or slower.

Should I be able to? I assume so - otherwise arcs and other slight angles
would not be CNC machinable.

Help/comments/guidance requested.

John A. Stewart.

Have a look at the timing requirements for the G540. As far as I recall
it needs some longer pulses. You have to set the step pulse length as
well as some other settings. There is some wiki stuff about this.

[Emc-users] running a DOS cam program in linux

2013-08-04 Thread Chris Morley
I have a cam program - SMARTCAM turning V7.5- that runs in dos.
Currently on a very old laptop under win 95

The floppy drive is hooped and there is no network port or USB.

I would like to run it under linux. Is there any suggestions on what to use
to try this?
Should I run win95 in a VM or something like DOSbox?

It uses a parallel port dongle for copy protection.

Does anyone else have any smartcam products of about this era?
Like advanced turning or milling?

I would try DOSbox first. I used it for a program that had to
communicate via serial port and it worked great. It's nice because it's
small and you don't need a VM.
