They haven't got around to updating their site? Crazy. Until this recent
study, the "salt is bad" baloney was based on some quite bad "science",
mainly a test using rodents fed massive amounts of salt for their body
weight.

There was (still is) a lot of such "science" done then bogusly
extrapolated to humans. Salt is bad, if you eat it by the pound.

The simplest, but probably worst performing, would be
ssh -X name@beaglebone

A quick way to test the network connection and Xwindows autorization is
with xclock, which will put an analog clock on your Xwindows server,
if all the permissions are allowing it. WAY faster than trying to start
LinuxCNC.

The downside of the ssh -X is that it is an encrypted session, which is
probably
just a waste of CPU time on a local network. But, it should get around most
of the X authority problems. X forwarding with export DISPLAY=
is that it needs the Xserver to allow it. A MAJOR problem is that most
Linux installs FORBID remote access to the X server by default!
I'm guessing this is what you are running into. It varies a bit from
system to system, but you need to remove the nolisten option from the
line that starts the X server.
Here's one mention of it :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/72812/how-to-disable-nolisten
But, it seems on Ubuntu 10.04 it is in/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc

Also, for ssh -X to work, //etc/ssh/sshd_config /must have the
forwarding enabled, with /
/

X11Forwarding yes

I hope some of this helps, it seems to be a very obscure
problem, and it shouldn't be that obscure. I guess ssh -X
works for most users.

[Emc-users] OT: Insurance debacle Re: Perceived issues with LinuxCNC

Well, one party's proposal to allow sale of health insurance across
state lines and imposing some limits on the massive settlements for
malpractice claims were the two items which could actually reduce costs,
and were next thing to violently opposed by the other party.

Any other kind of insurance can be sold across state lines, but with
health insurance a company is required to have a physical presence with
offices and people in every state in which they wand to do business.

Can't be an e-surance style outfit selling health insurance, but there
can for home, vehicle, etc.

Being forced to have offices and personnel everywhere drives up costs,
which like taxes on business get dumped directly into the retail prices.

Lawsuits for 5 and 7 figure sums for just about everything has forced
doctors and hospitals to pay big bucks for big insurance, and the
insurance companies "spread the wealth around" to you, me and all their
other customers.

Another problem with the medical industry in the USA is pills that cost
pennies to dollars each in other countries cost dollars to tens of
dollars each here. The way our regulations etc. are allows (the drug
companies claim forces) them to fund the majority of the R&D costs off
the Americans.

Many people say "Why can't it be like in Canada?". For starters, Canada
has about the same population as California. Much smaller population,
far fewer poor folks simply because of that.

[Emc-users] OT: Old knees Re: Perceived issues with LinuxCNC

2013-10-18 Thread Gregg Eshelman
Anyone with knee problems from damaged or worn cartilage, ask your doc
about hyaluronic acid injections. Once a week for six weeks, right into
the joint.

Works on most people as long as things aren't so far gone there's no
cartilage and it's down to bone on bone.

Hyaluronic acid is what's naturally in the fluid in the joints and the
body's production of it decreases over time. It's used to maintain the
condition of cartilage.

Taking it orally doesn't work, gets broken down by stomach acid, has to
be shot in direct just like greasing a car's suspension. ;)

My 69 year old mother had it done to both her knees, help a huge amount
with pain and it keeps getting better. Officially the improvement keeps
going up to six months as the cartilage repairs and rebuilds. Your
mileage may vary.

Amazingly, Medicare/Medicaid suffered a fit of sanity and this far
cheaper than joint replacement procedure is covered, at least for now.
Dunno how the "affordable" care act will change it.

BTW: Do a Google on CDC salt study. You'll likely be surprised or
perhaps "Ha! Knew that was wrong all along!".

I think I was faintly aware of that, the 'faint' because I am the only user
on my network & never switch users although there are other users defined
and used, for web access control and backup purposes on this machine. All
flavors of *buntu, so I am also the first user, and in the sudoers file on

the other users accessible should I need to.

I may have seen one or 2 back in the day, where day is 48-50.

We had a movie theater, and I was a projectionist 2 or 3 nights a week at
13yo, but that whole 1/4 block burned to the ground thanksgiving day in 48.
Next, we had a movie tent that came to town for a summer in 49, one night a
week, setting it up in the vacant lot next to the bank and funeral parlor.

But his gear was dangerous as it wasn't well grounded, and the NEA hadn't
yet published their first book, I learned to pull the connections when
changing the carbons, and to touch only the bakelite adjusting knobs on the
projectors, and to wear rubber soled tennies. But that was only a 1 nite a
week thing, and disney was still in the Mickey phase. So I was not well
exposed to that, and by the time I was fixing tv's for a living, I was
paying way more attention to the girl in the suicide seat of my 40 ford
than to what was on the screen at the drive-in. So I probably missed some
of the classic intermission stuff.

That was assuming a normally geared car. Those two trips I made across AZ
were in a 52 Chrysler with a 331 hemi wearing a recalibrated big buick carb
& paper air cleaner, and a stick shift OD tranny in front of its 3.52 rear
end. With 8.20x15 rubber on it, that was 30 mph per thousand revs. Wide
open on flat ground in OD was 3300 rpms, effectively a 2.42/1 rear end and
it got 19 mpg doing it. Hard on tires though as not much of the rubber in
the 50's was rated for more than 75 or 80 mph. 99 got them hot, too damned
hot for rayon cordage. Neither the tranny, nor the clutch disks (I tore
the hubs out of them) I could get for the stick shifts dry clutch were
quite up for the torque the 331 made, so today there is a marked shortage
of tranny gearsets in Iowa or So-cal for that basic gearbox that was
designed for the flathead 6's the Plymouth had in the era from 33-56.
Never broke it dragging though, always just creeping along in 5 o-clock
traffic. Never did figure that out. But any chevy of the era that didn't
have the Duntov engine in it was fair game.

Re: [Emc-users] Another Mill Conversion.

2013-10-18 Thread Dave Cole
With all of this cartoon talk, I decided to load the flash viewer into
my office LinuxCNC setup that is running on a Intel 330 dual core board
(older and slower than a D525MW) and see if I can watch cartoons, while
RUNNING the control program for my engraver (also in the office) which
uses a LPT interface to stepper drives.

Heck ya!

http://picpaste.com/Screenshot-8-X5U3qx4m.png

Notice that is a Samsung 27" screen running in full HD.Gotta love
hardware acceleration!! :-)

I don't know what you guys did to screw up your D525MW setups but I CAN
watch cartoons now while running the engraver..

Someone try this with an Intel Cedarview 2500, 2700, or 2800 board and
tell us if it works or not...

Remember, this is a full HD screen.

Not that this is a good idea ... but it is possible!

If you are the same user (and usernum) on both machines, I have found that
the usual ssh -Y machine.name Just Works(TM) here. It will ask for your
users password of course. That also, if it fails, should give you a
meaningful error on your remote terminal.

Please post the error.

A few years ago my wife was in the ICU for 10 days and then a regular
room for about another 10 days, almost lost her. Since then she has
recovered nicely. :-)

About a month later, we got a big envelope with from the hospital with
an itemized bill in it. The total cost was close to $300K. Fortunately
we had insurance that was "ok" but we still spent a lot of money, about
$15K on medical bills. We hit every out of pocket maximum that was
possible and we argued with the hospital and the insurance company for
the next 6+ months over the bills.

There are literally millions of people in the US without any health
insurance. That hospital bill would have bankrupted us if we did not
have health insurance..

Re: [Emc-users] Remote display LinuxCNC Machine Kit + BBB

2013-10-18 Thread Charles Buckley
Are you using "ssh -X"? Or "ssh -x"? Is /etc/ssh/sshd_config on the
linuxcnc server set to allow X11Forwarding?

You should not need to manually set DISPLAY= if ssh forwarding is enabled.

If you have a torch, Mapp or Acetylene/Air at least, you can silver
solder Stainless.Which is probably the way to go if it is thin tube.

[Emc-users] Remote display LinuxCNC Machine Kit + BBB

2013-10-18 Thread Walter Cigana
Hi all,

I am using a setup with LinuxCNC/MachineKit running on a beagleBone Black.

I have been trying for a week or so to get to ssh into the BBB and start
linuxcnc with the display showing up on my remote computer.

I know this is possible since many people refer to this working for them
and I've seen videos of people having it in their setup.
I have tried the usual "export DISPLAY=...:0" and "xhost +myIP" commands,
but I still get a "cannot open display" error when trying to launch and app
remotely.

I have looked around and tried many things that people suggest: X11
forwarding and the like, but want to stay away from VNC if possible.

thanks,
Walter

Looks like, for 12 or 17 pounds S., not too shabby for a Sunday. But I
don't have anything to weld it with, limited to MIG, with steel or alu wire
& have never tried the alu wire. IIRC that SS needs a TIG?

And obviously you have learned to work with that which you can get, or
already have. And while we have no local IKEA (nearest I'm aware of is
west of Pittsburgh PA on US 60 headed toward the PIT airport, 2.75+ hours

Not wanting to start a discussion of this subject (which seems
incredibly emotive) on this inappropriate forum, but I do think I like
the way things work here.
My dad is 73. He got a new knee last year. He went to the doctor with
knee trouble, the doctor said "you need a new knee", he got a new knee
a few months later. That was it, no bills to pay, no having to argue a
case with anyone.
My (possibly erroneous) understanding is that we actually pay less for
our health service, on average, than do folk in the US.

;-) WTH is the Roadrunner? I thought it was one of those birds that
occasionally tries to outrun you when toddling across AZ at 4500 rpms in
5th.

That said, its gfx ain't up to the job, never was, never will, but 1/10th
second behind the machine is about as fast as any install I've done, and
the D525MW might get 1/2 sec behind, its a balance between thread speeds
and video, always was, always will be I suspect.

[Emc-users] OT - Re: Perceived issues with LinuxCNC

Yes, the US healthcare system has become incredibly "corrupt", in
collusion with the Government policies.
Something had to be done to change the system... Time will tell if this
is a move forward or not. I do know that for a few people I know, this
will improve their current situation (which has been really bad..-
working poor ) Both work 50+ hours per week and they scrape by and have
huge insurance payments to keep their chronically sick kid well (a
pre-existing condition).

Time will tell.

Re: [Emc-users] Perceived issues with LinuxCNC

2013-10-18 Thread jrmitchellj .
It just bothers me to no end that Insurance companies have managed
(finagled) themselves into the position of "gate keeper" to health care.
In doing so have pushed the cost of said health care to the moon.
I wish I could negotiate similar rates to what the insurance companies have
done, and not have to buy insurance. I would be money way ahead!

And now the government mandate.

I feel s sorry for the next three to four generations!

Gene, that is really good news ...
I'll tell my friends in Warsaw that they will have to cancel their new
Yacht purchase since your knee will be ok! ;-)

Apparently... you are not as old as you feel. :-)

Well, TBT I haven't checked into it, primarily because you have to give
them way too much info to even get an estimate. From some other horror
stories, just the 2 notations on the present conditions chart for HPT and
DM-II would likely be well above $2000/month with a $5000 deductible.
There is nothing affordable about that. And its unreal considering that
the scripts for that are under $30/month, somebody

ATM, the supplemental policy is under $200/month, and the deductible is
$250. If they don't force me to, I am NOT opening that for renegotiation.

$30k-35k is about the going price for a replacement, out of my reach w/o
using quite a bit of the wifes 403b's. That isn't on MY agenda.

But, he took quite a few pix yesterday & when he came back from looking at
the pix, asked if I was as old as it said on the chart, I was in great
shape, for a 50yo. He seems to think I did something to the an interior
ligament, that that it would in due time stretch back out for full
extension motion. So basically nothing but stretching exercises & made
another appointment for late November to check progress.

In the meantime, I'm suitably miserable. Sigh. But it is getting better,
just at speeds typical for the DM-II on the chart. Eg, slow.

Cheers, Gene

Looks like you have a ready market for your "slightly used" D525MW boards
right here on this list... ;-)

Gene,
having read about all this fuss with US health insurance, in your case
it seems to me having one would be helpful...
