I should keep that in mind, Marlin has always treated me well. In my
first life as a broadcast engineer, Marlin bailed me out of $4,000
problems on several occasions by having at a reasonable price, the big
cement block sized PSU's for a digital effects unit, and for a Grass
Valley Group production video switcher. I needed a 200 amp 5 volter,
and he sold me a Pioneer plenty big enough for $750. Another time a
year later I needed a triple output in the same form factor, and got it
from him at the same price.

If I never see another of those big HP power supplies, it will be too
soon. The high eficiency ferrites used in their transformers have a
curie temperature well below the boiling point of water, cool enough
there is no paint discoloration when they have gone austenitic forever.
Damnedably hard to troubleshoot such an unusual failure.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

Hi All;

I still have a minute to say good morning. :)
That order from amazon I was expecting today? I just got a cancel
notice, product unavailable.

But when I go back to look for a substitute, the same guy has them listed
twice yet, 3 on one listing and 4 on another, for slightly different
prices.

That will also cancel my amazon prime but all I wanted was the free
shipping, and I'd bet a case of suds that is the real reason.

So I go to fleabay, and their search engine sends me 4 damned pages of 12
volt supplies for a search term of "24 volt switching power supply".
All at 2-5x the amazon prices.

So, since I do have a F-F db25 gender changer although its 3 inches long
and a connector destroyer if it gets bumped, I guess I demolish a box of
braking stuff I built for the lathe & only used a couple months before I
discovered Jon's pwm servo amp, which simplicates the heck out of that
project. I'm pretty sure there's a transformer in it that will do the
job with a cap input filter...

Damn I hate being lied to by amazon. But the box I have started to make
does have room for a linear home-made supply if the transformer is the
one I think it is.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

For small power supplies, MP Jones used to be the best.
They are still quite good. You can also check Jameco.

Did you put quotation marks around the "24 volt"? If it is entered as just
words with no quotes you also get everything with "24" in the description.
That includes "24 watt", "240 volt", etc. I just did it ebay.ca with the
quotes and got 25 hits all of which are appropriate.

I changed 5vdc power from the cable/5i25 to an external wall wart
measuring 5.13Vdc. I also tried another wall wart measuring 4.9Vdc.
The 5.13Vdc power supply worked better and longer, but ultimately it
still failed with communication errors and extra characters. The
4.9Vdc PS didn't work any better than 5v supplied from the 5i25.

I also reflashed everything, just to try it, no difference.

Then, I found a thread on the LinuxCNC forum about checking pins 3 &4
on TB5. I turned off the PC, pulled out the field wiring (both 24vdc
tb2, and I/O on tb8), and pulled out the TB5 connectors and measure
0.01Vdc across 3 and 4. I left the external 5vdc on.

I did notice that the jumper W2 for Encoder 2 Z channel was set to the
right (differential) and should have been to the left (single ended),
so I must have moved that or had it in the wrong position. Maybe I
did that accidentally when trying to update the 7i77.

Wondering if I have a bad board and what to try next?

Usually sserial errors like that are related to power issues on the 7I77.
Make sure that the 7I77 and 5I25 are jumpered for external 7I77 5V power (not
cable power) and that the external 5V suppled to the 7I77 is within 5% margins

[Emc-users] Upgrade to 2.7 Mesa 5i25/7i77 firmware

2015-10-04 Thread Mark Johnsen
Hi,

My upgrade to 2.7 is "still in process." I have a communication error
from the 5i25 to the sserial 7i77 (see below for error from dmesg). I
can start linuxcnc 2.7, make a jog, and after about 5-10 seconds I get
a slew of communication errors and the sserial card is shut down.

I had 5i25 firmware 33 (1.33) and needed to update that to 34 or
higher. I bought the 5i25/7i77 combo and wasn't quite sure which bit
file to use. I chose mesaflash --device 5I25 --write
5i25_7i77x2.bit. In the dmesg output it shows this:
[ 63.88] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart Serial Firmware Version 43

So that seems to be at least at the correct version now. Correct
bitfile, not so sure?

Also, I think I updated the firmware for the 7i77 okay, here's the
command line response:
mill@dlinux:~/linuxcnc/MESA/Update_7i77_FIRMWARE/utils/linuxcnc$ ./update7i77
move 7I77 W4 and W12 to right hand positions
cycle 7I77 field power and 5V power and hit return

updating 7I77 field I/O
.
updating 7i77 analog out
.
now move 7I77 W4 and W12 to the left hand positiona
and cycle field power and 5V power
mill@dlinux:~/linuxcnc/MESA/Update_7i77_FIRMWARE/utils/linuxcnc$
Broadcast message from root@dlinux (Sun Oct 4 00:29:04 2015):

The first time I did that, I hadn't recycled field power and it didn't work.

The full dmesg file can be found here:
http://www.ijohnsen.com/dmesg_errors_20151004.txt

Here's the tail end of the dmesg file w/ the communication errors:

HAL FILE Modifications
I don't think there would be an issue w/ the Hal file mods, I
commented out the lines per the instructions here:
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-started/updating-linuxcnc.html
I had originally used pncconf to get the base Hal files and then
edited them. I commented out the pet_watchdog line and loadrt
probe_parport. I didn't add anything else (there's no loading of a
parport function) and also checked and didn't find anything for
parport_pc in /etc/modprobe.d/linuxcnc.conf.

Not really sure what I did wrong:-(
